Another thing he forgot to mention. After installing the timing chain, when cranking the engine by hand to check if everything is aligned just note that the two DOTS at the top of the cam gears will no longer align with the black links on the chain. Just make sure the LINES on the cam gears line up and the crank sprocket dot lines up with the arrow.
Nice video. Remember it will take a bit longer if the engine is in the car. Your brilliant crankshaft bolt remover tool hack saved me from having to buy a bigger impact wrench.
I have pairs of black links on my chain. I'm assuming that the dots on the cam sprockets go between the black links and I end up with with six links between the pairs of black links. It works out the same as your set up but I thought it worth mentioning.
How long did it take to pull the motor from the car? I have an 07 si with higher mileage i want to change out my timing components outside the engine bay i feel it would be a much easier job with the motor out of the car
Got an oil leak, think it is the timing chain inspection cover,is this a common problem, already changed VTEC solenoid gasket and the oil pressure sensor.
you can lock both camshafts by inserting a pin in the rear of both cams. there are holes in the ends of the cams, when lined up correctly , the pin will lock into a recess in the head.
alex ngo the black links will never land back on the dots on the cam and crank, just make sure the cam marks and crank marks all line up. 2 rotations of the cam and one full rotation of the crank should do it
The dots eventually would line up. I just did a Ford timing chain and if you rotated the crank 66 times the links would line up. To check your marks its 2 rotation of the crank not 1. This is because the the cams rotate ounce every times the crank rotates twice.
Great video. I did this on my accord but now I have a p0339 code and wont rev passed 3k. It drives great and starts fine besides that. Any suggestions? Thanks
Just look around the edge of there are any flanges not on the mating surface and maybe try prying on those? Ive never done it with the motor in the car
I am doing the chain replacement while the engine is in the car. Make sure you don't leave bolts that are in there. I said the same, but I figured that there was a bolt left out alone. there are 2 bolts by the VVT or VTC spot.
hey for a DC5 Jdm K20A type R engine is it the same location water coolant hose that runs across to the other side for the water pump is it the same as your video shows.. or there is no water coolant hose like that on a DC5 Jdm K20A type R ?
interestingly enough the jdm k20a is so much more advanced it does not even use coolant, they are air cooled engines that even use the added air during vtec to cool the trans oil!
Yeah, thank you very much for this great video sharing your experience with us all. Inspiring and very, very helpful for me thanks. I have to change the timing chain in two months on my ITR Civic FD2. 🔰🇯🇵❤️✌️FEEL Yoself Subscripted, man.
I did everything exactly but when I rotate it 2 full turns everything lines up except the dark links on the chain don’t line up anymore. Is that normal?
JDMods, I have a 2004 Honda CRV with 130K miles and I am going to do the timing chain while the engine is still in the car. I see timing chain kits that sell the oil pump chain/tensioner as well. Can I change the oil pump chain/ tensioner while it is still in the car without having to remove the oil pan? it is hard to tell if that is an option. Since I am going to do the timing chain, I might as well do the oil pump chain if I can. please let me know it that it possible.
I dropped one of the chain guide bolts and i can't find it. I'm not %100 sure it didnt go in the oil pan. If it did, is there anyway for that bolt to end up at the bottom of the oil pan ? In other words, is there enough space between the side of the oil pan (below crankshaft) and the rest of oil pan for a bolt to fit thru ?
Has anyone done just a timing cover reseal on a K series? Haven’t found a video on one yet. Can it be done in car without removing the pan? will the cover seal ok with the oil pan if the cover is the only thing removed? Or would the oil pan also need resealed to ensure a proper seal? Anyone know?
just 3 bolts holding the cover onto the sump ,can be done in a couple of hours if you overcome the tight pulley bolt . it will seal just fine . don't put as much sealant as this guy did , a 3 mm bead is maximum too much and it falls off over time and clogs the oil pick up . lower the cover in carefully as not to ruin the nice continuous bead you made . put the bolts in fast before it dries in the holes and makes life difficult . to make it easier use well seal , its sticky and runny , horrible stuff but more forgiving if you brush against things as you fit it .
Any symptoms leading to this? My k20z one won't go past 3000 RPM right now also idles real low and dies when I come to a stop. Can't quite figure it out
Not sure if you solved this issue, but experienced this with my accord about a year ago. The same symptoms, too. Turns out that the VTEC solenoid needed to be replaced.
I literally just watched a video before this one where he changed the tensioner on his 2006 TYPE-S....only removing the tensioner plate. But it seems as if that tensioner falls after removing the three (3) bolts, it's going INSIDE the oil pan, and the RSX (or at least the TYPE-S) will require the engine to be pulled because of the subframe bar, doesn't give enough clearance to remove the pan from the bottom of the engine. So when removing the tensioner, you need to place something at the bottom of the tensioner to, I guess (grab it) from falling
joe sno You can but it’s tuff to pull the timing cover out and hard to put it in without smearing your new silicone and possibly having an oil leak when done
this engine is just so beautifully made. look how strong the chain and gears etc are. the engineering from honda on the k20 is incredible
Agreed
Agreed
One of the best 4 bangers ever made
Unlike the tsi engines
Only video that shows the timing cover process .you get a sub. Thanks
Probably the best video for k20 timing chain. Short simple
Another thing he forgot to mention. Just make sure the LINES on the cam gears line up and the crank sprocket dot lines up with the arrow.
Very helpful. Its a 1 1/2 X 1 bolt at home depot paid $5 bucks works great.
Was this for removing the pulley? if so, happen to have a link or item number please? :)
Thanks!
direct and to the point, explanations made sense, not a whole lot of filler and other stuff, great video man!
Nice video. Remember it will take a bit longer if the engine is in the car. Your brilliant crankshaft bolt remover tool hack saved me from having to buy a bigger impact wrench.
Harbor freight has the 1/2" Bauer Impact, works like a charm, just get the 19mm harmonic balancer socket
Working on a car engine outside of the vehicle compared to working on it while it’s inside the vehicle is such a huge difference in difficulty level
Yeah, just remember to also apply silicone gasket in between the chain cover and the oil pan
Great video man. Looking to do my timing chain, guides and tensioner before I go turbo.
Great video! I was wondering since you have the timing chain off! Should we replace the chain for the oil pump as well!? Or is it necessary!?
Great procedures of how to align the timing marks, thanks
Thank you to the poster of this repair video, what a help!!!!!
Thank you so much for the diy video!!!!
Great video man. It was clear and very helpful.
What pipe fitting size did you used to remove the harmonic balancer?
Do you recommend replacing all components? Like the chain guides? I’m thinking just the chain and tensioner...what do you think?
I'd recommend changing it all.
Buy a impact easier for crack bolt great DIY video though A+ :)
Clear and concise video
Great video! Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.
Extremely helpful and thanks so very much.
I have pairs of black links on my chain. I'm assuming that the dots on the cam sprockets go between the black links and I end up with with six links between the pairs of black links. It works out the same as your set up but I thought it worth mentioning.
Your video saved my life bro, thank you.
Nice job buddy 😆 Thanks Stevie 😎🇬🇧
Great video! Very clear!
Thanks mate that was useful for me👍

Got an oil leak, think it is the timing chain inspection cover,is this a common problem, already changed VTEC solenoid gasket and the oil pressure sensor.
So how often is it necessary to change a timing chain on one of these engines?
Great video man. Hey how can I set the dual cams shafts DTC without using the chain. You did it at 4:43 , but you skip that part. How did you do it?
you can lock both camshafts by inserting a pin in the rear of both cams. there are holes in the ends of the cams, when lined up correctly , the pin will lock into a recess in the head.
Awesome and very detailed how to. Thank you much!
great video!!! if i have to replace the head gasket, do I have to remove the 2 camshafts?
No just the chain
What's about camshafts position sensor for Acura RDX 2.3L year 2007, where is located?
Hey let’s say I did everything correctly right, but when I test it by doing a full rotation does it have to land back on the dots???
alex ngo the black links will never land back on the dots on the cam and crank, just make sure the cam marks and crank marks all line up. 2 rotations of the cam and one full rotation of the crank should do it

awesome video
Great video. I did this on my accord but now I have a p0339 code and wont rev passed 3k. It drives great and starts fine besides that. Any suggestions? Thanks
Matthew Thornton cheack compression and make sure it has no bent valves
Thats a crank sensor code, check voltage at the crank sensors and replace if necescary, also make sure you plug everything back in til it clicks
If i have to replace oil pump chain do i need to remove oil pan?
How does it differ from a K24 engine?
Thank u sir.
Good job
How hard is doing this with the motor in the vehicle?
We've never done it in the car. I'd imagine its do-able, but probably quite difficult.
Any tips for getting the timing cover off while in the car? Its hondabonded on like crazy. Need good pry points to not damage anything
Just look around the edge of there are any flanges not on the mating surface and maybe try prying on those? Ive never done it with the motor in the car

Where can I get all the torque specs for this job?
Very helpful video :)

Am i able to get off the timing cover without taking out the whole engine?
Yes you can, but get ready for more "got damn it"....... allot more. Doesn't mean you can't do it tho
Yeah, thank you very much for this great video sharing your experience with us all. Inspiring and very, very helpful for me thanks. I have to change the timing chain in two months on my ITR Civic FD2.
🔰🇯🇵❤️✌️FEEL Yoself Subscripted, man.
Thanks for you help.
That Honda tool you can find on amazon for 30$
Thanks man.
What would happen if I put my timing gear backwards by accident and didn't notice
I did everything exactly but when I rotate it 2 full turns everything lines up except the dark links on the chain don’t line up anymore. Is that normal?
Yes thats normal!
When you remove the timing cover is it going to leak oil if the engine is full with oil?
Doesn't leak. Oil is settled inside the oil pan.
JDMods, I have a 2004 Honda CRV with 130K miles and I am going to do the timing chain while the engine is still in the car. I see timing chain kits that sell the oil pump chain/tensioner as well. To be honest, we have never done the oil pump chain but id imagine it would be tought but not impossible to do in the car
You need to drop the oil pan. Oil pump chain has marks just like the timing chain.
Good video. A bolt with a 14mm head isn't a 14mm bolt though.
Yes there is an enough space to drop almost a head bolts.
How do I install a Turbo on the k20?
Sweet video. Is that the sir motor?
What do you do if the chain is off and the dots aren't in the specific spots they need to be in?
Always line up your timing marks before you pull the belt or chain
@@tommys2979 I ended up getting it all dialed in :)
@@Lastsight100 noice!
Do u know the size of the crank lock tool bolt needed?
19mm....

Any CELs? It could be in limp mode because if your timing chain has stretched or skipped it's likely that it will throw misfire codes
Yes it does have a cell I'll probably switch ECU with a K Pro and run all the sensors from there and see what happens.
Not sure if you solved this issue, but experienced this with my accord about a year ago. The same symptoms, too. Turns out that the VTEC solenoid needed to be replaced.
Looks like the tensioner can be replaced without removing the chain cover.

looking at my 04 crv it seems almost impossible to do complete job while engine is in the car !

K20 suzuki engine?
Is Honda
4:30 timing set-up
I did this exactly and when I started my Honda when I let go of the clutch I hear metal clanking I don’t know what I did wrong
Is this engine interference?
Yes
I can rent a pulley crank tool here for free at Canadian tire.
Needs more silicone
You said belt haha
I bought the tool and it was $45
whats the name? i am currently looking for one on amazon. Thanks
Great video
