    The Mister Ed that I mention in this video is Jeff Horchoff, another beekeeper on UA-cam.
    There's nothing quite like a full Saturday of fun beekeeping and visiting with good folks. We had a visit from a future beekeeper and fan of the channel and his family. They got to do their first bit of beekeeping, bottle some honey and shoot a video intro. Then they went over to Mr. Ed's and got to help him catch a swarm. I think his video with them will be out in the next week or two. I hope we made the stops worth it. :)
    Did you ever wonder what banked queens are? I'll bet that most of the newer beekeepers or hobbyists have never heard of banked or banking queens. After Akiva and his family left I went through a row of colonies real quick to check that they were queen right. I ended up having to pull two banked queens and place them in queenless colonies.
    To bank queens means to store them in a cage for later use. Banked queens are typically kept in a queenless hive next to open brood where there are a lot of nurse bees that will take care of them. If they are kept in the wrong conditions the workers will just ignore them and they will starve to death in short order. Queens can be banked pretty much for as long as need be. Of course they aren't being productive for you in a cage and you have to constantly care for them by keeping open brood frames next to them so it's best to find a place for them as quickly as possible.
    Later in the day I worked on some hives at my house and then caught a little nap before heading out to get a late start on a hive removal. The colony turned out to either be queenless or have a virgin after a recent swarm. I didn't find a queen. I ended up introducing a queen to them the next day. It had plenty of honey though which I was running low on so after sharing with the home owner and a friend I ended up with almost a gallon.
    I have a video from last year titled "Why Don't You Just Poison The Bees?" in which I make a statement about the amount of roach feces I find in the location of a hive that was previously poisoned and then was eaten by other insects and probably mice too. The feces I found is mainly from wax moths but since some, probably five to ten percent, is from roaches and that's what you see in the video I just called it roach poo. Most people wouldn't know the difference and it really doesn't matter in making my point but that one misspoken statement seems to have rubbed a small population of people the wrong way really really hard. Well watch this, toward the end of this video I give you a good look at the size and amount of roaches that come after an unguarded hive even before I'm out of the way. I'd hate to know the amount of pests living in the cracks and crevices of a house where a hive full of dead brood, pollen, good wax and all that honey was left unattended. I bet on a quiet night you can hear them partying in your soffits.

    "Because lesser wax moths eat unoccupied honey bee combs, they are considered pests to bees and beekeepers. However, unoccupied combs can harbor harmful pathogens that inflict damage to neighboring insects. By eating the combs, the moths can reduce the harm to insects of that region and provide a clean space for other organisms to inhabit."
    Ineresting.

    THANK YOU for finally mentioning "the itch" that goes with stings! I'd never been stung(at all, ever) got the brilliant idea that bees might be a good thing to add to the farm..and off we went. 2 double hives(promptly split) later, I'm out there, decide to clean up the long grass in front of the hives (in BLACK track pants no less)and get my first sting. Bulls eye! Found out very quickly, I'm not allergic, but have a strong immune response. Two days later, I realized the ouch wasn't the worst part and am going bananas trying not to scratch what is now very tender skin. If I'd known then what I know now, I'd have popped two benadryl first off. Live and learn.

You handle swarms well, while you're being punished you put out lot of information that is very helpful. You got me very interested in bee keeping. just ordered my first start up kit. I know you have a lot on your hand, but I would be very happy to see you put out an educational videos about life cycle of bees, maintenance, trouble shooting issues with diseases and wintering bees...etc. Love you man.

    • @drhank33y
      @drhank33y 5 років тому +4

      Smoke canister will override their pheromones, they use pheromones to send warnings to the colony if they feel they are under attack. Without pheromones (because the smoke pretty much stops it), everyone stays calm. Since he also works calmly the bees don't feel threatened. Also honey bees are generally not aggressive at all. The only times I see him get stung if he's handling the things and by accident grabs a bee between his fingers or something.

      these are normal honey bees not killer bees. Provided they aren't irritated you can actually pet honey bees. As a child I would pick them up and pet them all the time without getting stung.

    I wanted to say your videos are pretty awesome though, you're always so positive about it and you're so nice to the bees, it's rarely their fault when they sting you and when you put the hives together you're always so careful not to squish any of them, you seem to care a lot for you're bees.

    Love this channel. Have a few colonies myself. Looks like your bees have some Carniolan in them. Of my 3 colonies this year I lost my Italian colony, but my two Carniolan colonies are doing gang busters. Had a nice warm spell for a few days in Ohio last week so I let the Carnis rob out what was left of the Italian's honey, which was a lot. Not sure why they died, they had plenty of resources and I had a round rapid feeder on top with 2:1 sugar to water syrup. Its been a rather mild winter wet winter, but all my Italians were in the bottom board dead. They had a light mite load going into fall too. Treated in October with Formic Pro. I may do Oxalic acid vapor this spring. I think the formic acid killed a lot of brood.
    Next time I get down South I would love to do some beekeeping with you.

    I saw a house where the owner/investor sealed a large hive in a two story wall and killed the bees with poison. The smell was horrid. They ended up ripping the inside wall out to try and clean it up, but the rot had sunk in and the roaches had moved in. I never realized how bad dead bees could smell. They were trying to get someone to quote replacing the inside walls, a window and all the trim (along with the outside lap boards). The carpenters I know wouldn't do it for what they were offering. The owner ended up paying many times more to repair the damage he caused versus getting the bees moved correctly to start.

Thank you , again for that. 😀
    P.S. After that cutout you had performed in this video, you mentioned how you will need to sit on towels because you were all sticky which makes total sense. What I propose is that you invest in a roll of disposable seat covers, kinda like the ones that you receive in your vehicle when you take it to be serviced at the dealerships. Better yet, I’ll bet there is a subscriber out there in UA-cam-land who has access to disposable seat covers. Only this time, they need to say 628 Dirt Rooster on them. Lol

      You’re not wrong at all, but so many insects and other creatures that people view as pests are super important to their respective food chains and don’t get the same “publicity” (for lack of a better word). It’s just important to view everything around us in the context of their natural environment. But us naturalists thank you for recognizing the importance and necessity of bees!

    Roaches! Yuck! Though I'd still rather deal worth them instead of attorneys. Don't know what it is about them roaches, but mice, moths, ants do not instill the level of nastiness that roaches do.
    The whole queen thing is fascinating to me, but very much a mystery, and maybe the topic of a future video? I remember your dad did a grafting video a while back, but I don't recall seeing how you go from a bunch of raised queens to getting them mated and locked back up to prevent them from killing each other.
    Glad to see you back making videos. Please tell me you took time to take a big old bite out of that nice, fat comb. I think my mouth was dripping as much as the honey was. ;-)

      Agreed, roaches freak me out to an irrational degree. I know rationally that they're not much worse than any other bug, but i can't help it, just seeing them makes my skin crawl. I'll take a room full of spiders or snakes before i deal with even one roach lol

    • @mikeries8549
      @mikeries8549 6 років тому

      Pamela the reason there aren't a lot of queen rearing videos is because there are umpteen ways to do it. In general a queen cell is vertical instead of horizontal. The egg is laid. When it hatches it is fed royal jelly which has something in it that activates the sexuality of the larva and makes it into a queen larva which is extremely well-fed. When it's 8 days old the cell with the larva gets capped. On day 16 the queen emerges. Within days she is ready to mate. She mates with many drones. 15-40 is what I've read. She starts laying eggs a few days or a week after mating. She has to practice but gets the hang of it quickly. It takes about three weeks to a month to get a laying queen from when you say GO.

    • @richbooth8948
      @richbooth8948 6 років тому +3

      Mike Ries Thanks for the explanation. You left out one part. After she mates with 15-40 drones, she smokes a cigarette and drinks a beer. ;-)

    • @mikeries8549
      @mikeries8549 6 років тому

      Yeah wait til you see a queen come back with "mating sign" where she's basically carrying the ripped out genitals of a drone in her tail. If you think that's funny try a product called "peter rooter". Cures the drips.

    You should take that long (non-serrated) knife and heat the tip real good about two inches down and then bend it over. Maybe check with a blacksmith to ensure it won't break. This would give you an angled edge of about 75 to 80 degrees to work that comb on a tight ceiling cutout.

    Id happily do a cut out with you. Always wanted to do cut outs and learn about bees n stuff. I watch lots of videos but dont personally know any local beekeepers here in Picayune, MS lol. I convinced my friend to call a bee keeper rather than an exterminator a few weeks ago for some bees that started making home under their house.

    What I learned after 1 year doing bees is . If you work them without protection, you move slow and there may be times that you have to stop what you are doing for a minute or two.
    If you get stung benedryl does wonders.
    I am not so sure if I would lick/eat that honey after knowing that there where roaches feasting on it.

    Brother, I do not envy you on an overhead job like that one was with honey dripping down on everything! But I guess it goes with the territory, eh? Those first few combs you brought out sure did look delicious, though.
    This is off topic but I've been meaning to ask you how your dad is doing? I hope you don't mind me asking? But I recently watched a video you did from a couple years back and you had mentioned that he was having a bit of a rough go of it at the time. Being that I'm an old dog myself, us old guys kind of try to watch out for each other, ya know. I hope he's doing better and feeling well. Please send him my regards, if you would.

    This is such an AMAZING intro to honeybees! I have so many questions and the first one is why don't they swarm on you and sting you as soon as you start moving stuff around in their hive? And why do they let you cut the honeycomb without stinging you? What is the can of smoke for? The topic of "banked queens" is fascinating!! Where do you live? Looks like maybe some place where it is hot and humid.

  • @kat2641

    I got a question.... For removing comb up overhead like that? Why could you not make a specific special knife with?? Say the first inch bent to a 90 degree like ( 7 ) with a handle being on the bottom of the 7?? Yea I know it would probably take a lot of wrist strength.... But for jobs like that of course the first comb you would have to rip out but after that you could slice between the wood an comb. Wouldn't it make a lot less sticky mess? It was just an idea that struck me watching this video...just curious if something like that would work and make it easier for you making the job faster to remove...or wouldn't it work? But was a nice size ... Thanks

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  4 роки тому

      I've asked two different knife makers to build that exact thing and neither has come through. It has to be a specific angle and I guess it sounds simple but apparently it's not that easy to make or maybe they just aren't interested in getting paid. One quoted sixty bucks and I said OK. Never heard from him again.

    • @kat2641
      @kat2641 4 роки тому

      @@628DirtRooster well the only known problem I would know, is after you heat it up to bend it, you have to re temper to steel an that I know from experience. Too hot and you crystallize the steel making the blade break off.. too cold of a temper will make the blade soft and bend and not holding its shape.. but this much I know the old forge guys could do it in a heartbeat.. sadly most of the old boys are long gone and with them went the art... Guess I just found a government project for my nephew ;-) he's been practicing for a year he wants to go on that TV show forged in fire.. yep I'll be getting back to you.. coz I'm an old goat but I know it can be done .. laughing we might go through to three knives blades till he perfect The re temper...edit you lefty or right handed? That will be a determining factor on which way to bend blade an I don't think 90 deg is right I would guess about an 80° angle..
