I've found my bees actually winter very well on sugar syrup as long as the syrup has been dosed with the hive alive additive. In Maine, and haven't lost a " sugar syrup fed" colony over winter in years.
Doug, I found Dr. Leo through you 4 years ago. I have 6 colonies of bees as of 4/27/24. My equipment is homemade from Dr. Leo’s plans. Never buy bees. Start early. Thanks you so much.
I think it is wonderful that you, along with Dr. Leo, are teaching natural beekeeping methods that have stood the test of time. I am certain, like myself, many people did not have this knowledge, as it has been replaced over time. Catching swarms of local bees is the correct path. Why buy bees when you can go out and catch some already acclimated to our own area. It makes perfect sense. Please keep the beekeeping videos with Dr. Leo coming! Thank you so very much!
Bro. I've caught 5 wild swarms this spring. Many thanks to you and Dr. Leo. It's awesome. note:I've had huge success with swarm commander. I use shelving brackets as supports. works great. Blessings. Shalom

Where I live I never saw honeybees but I tried swarm traps anyway... no luck. I think because I'm so far from a town and I'm surrounded for miles and miles by a fir forest (for lumber production). I finally bought bees last year and they're doing good in the insulated layens hive. Thank you Dr Leo!
Well, if you never saw any bees or swarms it might mean that you're in luck and may actually exploit it for your benefit (and even some nice profit if it goes well). Due to your isolation, you'll be the only source of drones in the area, which means you can choose who your new queens mate with, and that would enable you to do some good selective breeding. Isolated places are naturally valued among beekeepers for that purpose.
Buying bees is not a scam but free bees are always great! Overwintering successfully has more to do with the management practices and health of the bees than it does with bought vs caught honey bees. There are so many ways to manage bees and this is just one.
I’ve had 2 swarms move into a vacant hive box. Both were very dangerous colonies. Must have been Africanize. No fun at all. My German Shepherd would not even want to go outside to the back yard. I’d be working in my garden 30’ away and would be getting stung for no reason. I had to work the garden in my bee suit.
successful beekeepers never have to buy bees u see all the packages David Burns has in his vids but said he doesn't lose bees the lies come from all of the UA-camrs and they sell bees!!!
I’ve rescued 2 colonies last week. I feed mine a lot of sugar syrup when I catch a new swarm to build them up. They need it to build comb for the Queen to lay eggs and build up strong before winter hits. They do better in a big cluster. The second year I don’t feed them sugar. I’m in hot, dry Texas and once summer hits there’s very little food available for them.
Swarm relocation tip: I have done this to every swarm i catch and it works. Take down the trap at night with a screen taped over it. Put the trap right next to the hive they will be transferred to. Put branches with leaves on them right in front of the trap totally covering the trap entrance, then remove the screen from the entrance. This will force the bees to realize they have been moved and they will reorient themselves to that specific location. This method allows you to move a trap any distance close by. It always works for me except for maybe a dozen stragglers at the old location. I learned it on UA-cam as well while i was researching this problem of relocation. Leo, you’re the best! I started keeping bees following your advice since 2020. Everything is going so well! And no chemicals or expenses. Thank you for everything!!!!
I’m trying to understand what you’re saying here. Do they move into the hive on their own or does this just help them transition? Do you have a link for this?
Now this is the kind of videos I love from y'all! Very informative and y'all went over everything so good. Thank you for sharing, I'm excited about my bees! 🙌🐝

I started keeping Bees' about 20 yrs ago. I was taught how to catch a swarm by a 90 yr old neighbor who took me under his wing, showing me the way he was taught. All you need is a couple used frames that smell like bees to put inside the box and sugar water with a drop of lemongrass oil in a clean spray bottle. Spray the box twice a day inside with the mix, starting in March. No feeders needed.. Never have I had to buy bees, but I do give them away, when they swarm out.
@@chrisgartenn Normally I mix 1 to 1 or less if its being used as bait. Only one drop of grass oil to a 20 ounce bottle seems to be plenty...Gives them a lil snack while checking out the box.

Thank you for this. We where just given a hive. They are local, but knowing nothing about bees and not wanting to feed sugar water had me a little concerned.
Great information! Thank you!
DR LEO IS A GREAT TEACHER..I never knew the things he went over in this session..I have never had bees but I have been thinking of ways to do a few beehives..the commercial stuff seems so expensive..his method is SO common sense..I feel confident I could succeed..I ALWAYS leave my yard full of dandelions for the early arrival of the pollinators..I don't think the neighbors who treat their yards were happy with me..I've noticed they gave up keeping their yards dandelion free😊..thank you both..as always prayers and blessings
