  • How to skate on rough ground // inline skating tip
    Skating can be difficult enough to learn, but when you've grasped the basics and want to take yourself out on to real-life surfaces, things can feel impossible!
    This little is something I use all the time while skating. It's good for any surface, but it's particularly useful for keeping yourself moving when skating rough terrain.
    Give it a try.

    The decisions on how to switch transitions from surface to surface in seconds must make the mind workout just as intense as the physical workout.

      Yeah, I find multi-surface sessions much more taxing than rolling on a long smooth road. So much more for the mind and body to adjust to and way more fun! 😁

    Excellent. I've been struggling with this . It's tricky to go from smooth to rough surfaces. I've been learning at an outdoor skate arena but it's not always desirable to go out if my way to get there. I'd like to just rip out of my house onto the street. This is helpful. Thanks Rich! #Flowskate

    Interesting technique haven't tried that one before I'll be sure to give it a go at it. I usually just raise my forward skate toe upwards before hitting the small speed bumps or irregular raise surfaces.

      I did some roller skating as a kid but I got serious about blading near the end of 2018, so about 3 years.
      Back then I really struggled with regular streets and roads, but the goal was always to roll anywhere without having to travel to a smooth spot.
      It does take practice, and the process can be frustrating, but having the freedom to roll wherever is the outcome if you’re willing to put in the work! 👍

      How long did it take you to be as good as that? I just started skating this week and it’s my first time. I managed how to balance my self already but it’s frustrating coz I can’t be as fast and as smooth possible. I guess it will take me some time before I can roll smoothly

    • @RichHayterSkater
      @RichHayterSkater  3 місяці тому +1

      @kimiealcantara5893 Yeah, it is going to take some time until you are confident on your skates, but the reward is so worth the effort.
      Practice often, and try to learn the basics such as parallel turns, the drag stop, and work on developing a good stride.
      Time on your skates is what matters, so even short sessions will offer benefits.
      Take your time, if you stick with it you will be hooked for life! 😁👍

    Very helpful to me, i live in Taipei and pretty certain the government is married to tile manufacturers because there is tile everywhere. Even the kitchens are made of bathroom tile. Fortunately the underground car park where I live is very flat, smooth, and empty.

    • @RichHayterSkater
      @RichHayterSkater  9 місяців тому +1

    • @ev026
      @ev026 9 місяців тому

      @@RichHayterSkater it really is! The only tiles that don't become dangerously slippery when wet are the ones that are quite uneven and bumpy when dry, and the ones that are nice and flat are on the sidewalks, where foot-high drops in stairs or onto the streets are commonplace and it's just sudden, fairly steep inclines galore.
      I call them ankle sprainers because even walking normally on then you can trip and really injure yourself. I guess I can see those as a way to challenge myself when I get good enough to traverse rougher terrain on tiny wheels.
      Fell flat on my ass yesterday running to catch a bus to class in light rain. Fortunately once I get to campus it's a wonderful place to practice skating.

    Do different wheels/boots absorb the vibrations differently or is that just something you get used to? Skating on roads feels like an earthquake sometimes to me 😅

    • @RichHayterSkater
      @RichHayterSkater  Рік тому +7

      Yes, generally speaking, a larger wheel and longer frame will give you more comfort and stability with less agility and movement. Notice I say, ‘generally’.
      Your boot and liner will also help to give you some dampening from the surfaces you’re on. Look out for a decent shock absorber or even an insole.

    Is it ok to skate on the street with the wheels that come on the skates or do i have to buy special wheels for street skating i use inline skates and idk if the wheels will wear down fast but if u have any recommendations on wheels to use on the street id love to hear them

    • @RichHayterSkater
      @RichHayterSkater  9 місяців тому

      Wheels are a personal preference. So you should sample a few different types to see what suits your style of skating.
      A softer wheel will provide better traction and comfort, but will wear quicker. I favour a slightly harder wheel, because they last longer over rougher surfaces, and are better to slide with.
      Use the wheels that came with your skates, then decide if you want to go harder or softer. 👍

    • @RichHayterSkater
      @RichHayterSkater  2 роки тому +7

      Maintaining momentum is important but it can be difficult to do on rough ground as you lose speed quickly, which is why there is a need to continuously propel yourself. This is challenging on the rough because the surface is uneven.
      I like the game of ‘Finding the smoothest line.’ This is where you actively traverse the surface you are on, moving across it to find the smoothest like through it. It always feels like you’re battling you’re way through, moving with strategic intention across the terrain. You won’t be moving as quickly, and it can be quite energy consuming, but it’s very satisfying, and way more fun than stumbling your way through. It takes focus and time but it’s well worth it! 👍
