  • how to inline skate. How to build the confidence to skate anywhere! Plan your skating route.
    So, you want the confidence and the freedom to skate anywhere - and why would you not? But you're finding it's not as simple as it looks.
    The answer is all in the planning.
    Planning your routes will help you to feel safe. From there, you can begin to expand your boundaries and test your wheels on those sketchy surfaces.
    It won't be easy at first, but the more you repeat this, the more confidence and freedom you'll gain.

    Yes! Nice one Rich. I totally underestimate the challenge of new streets compared to familiar streets even though the terrain is similar. I like the breaking it up in parts, exploring. Sometimes I get in my head that it should be easy, but actually your video is a reminder that it's tricky and hard! Traversing the streets on skates is full on! Cheers.

    Nice neighborhood. And nice skating. Frantic, on off sidewalks, on the road, on bicycle lanes, jumping, stepping over obstacles. Freedom indeed.

    Great advice 👍👍. I've not been able to learn any new tricks or nameable skills for a couple of years now, but just getting about on skates in different environments with more confidence is the one area of my skating that did improve over the past year. If you want to skate here in the UK, learning to skate a variety of surfaces is a must!😬😅

      You’re absolutely right! Personally, as an urban skater in the UK, confidence on a variety of surfaces is way more useful than tricks. They just look cooler! 😎

    On one of my first outings, i had to go from road, to grass, to path and back again. It was a great feeling when i got through it with no issue, and then nearly fell over 5 meters down the road. Sucks that it's so wet here right now, especially after those two storms we just had. Really want to get out again.

      Yes, I will defo do a progress video on the future, I have plenty of older footage. The difference between then and now is pretty dramatic.
      Keep progressing! 👍

    2 things stopping me is probably not being able to stop in a dime confidently(ok with t stop but that takes forever and I’m only able to do hockey stops at low speeds) and two, not able to go over obstacles

    • @RichHayterSkater
      @RichHayterSkater  2 роки тому +1

      Use that T-stop to slow you enough to use the hockey stop, I use this regularly. Find obstacles that you can practice with in a controlled way, like curbs, small steps, pot holes, etc. Mess about with these every single time you head out to skate. It’ll feel awkward and difficult at first, but these will eventually start to become the norm, and suddenly they won’t feel so impassable. 👍

    i bought inline skates for the first time a couple of weeks ago. but i bought speed skates. 125mm sized wheels. 3 wheels. i fell on my ass 3 times when i first went out to practice. i haven't practiced since. i should have bought smaller wheels first, like 85mm like you said. it's alright though. i just ordered inline skates with four 85mm wheels. i am going to practice on those and work my way up to the speed skates. i need to get over the fact that i will look like bambi in public. and that i might fall in public.

      Yeah, I always recommend new skaters learn on a 4x80 setup, it just makes sense to me. Keep those 125s until you get confident with the basics.
      It will be challenging, but if you stay consistent, I promise you won’t regret it! Good luck!👍

    I am really new on skating , and I fell on my right hip twice and now I am resting , how people manage when they fell down to the though surface, I am resting now but after second fall to the same area, it thinks it will take time to heal.

    I'm having a hard time learning balance whilst I slow down or get knackered. How do I get better and confidence at just believing I'm not going to fall? I have SEBA High Light 80s. Decent skates. But I still struggle. Any tips on leaning balance and confidence on skates?

      Hey! Those are some nice skates and you should defo be enjoying them! Let’s see if I can help make that happen!
      A few things you might try:
      Practice standing and balancing on grass until you feel more comfortable on your skates.
      Take it slow and only skate on level, smooth surfaces in the beginning.
      Make sure your weight is never over your heels. Bend your knees considerably and force your shins in to the tongues of your skates; this will help you adopt a safe and supported skating position.
      Ensure your skates are fastened correctly; play around with this to see what suits you best as tighter isn’t always better.
      Use the scissor stance, where you roll with one skate slightly ahead of the other instead of side by side, as this helps improve stability.
      Good luck! I hope some of these tips are useful to you. The scissor technique is particularly useful for balance. 👍

      @@RichHayterSkater Thanks Rich, yes i am practicing every day even when it rains i have put them on in my flat. I get strange pain or some reason on the front of my foot soles and arches. They fit perfect but is it just that they are new? My feet are weak and need to get used to using those new muscles? Also lower back pain. I a 195 lbs . Tryng to lose wight through diet and exercise (skating). After about 20 mins the pain starts. Will that eventually get better?

    • @RichHayterSkater
      @RichHayterSkater  2 роки тому +1

      Yes it will. You need to give yourself time and rest between sessions to let your body adapt. Things will settle down. It’s surprising how much core work is involved when skating.

    Curious how you go about down hills? Do you do them on the sidewalk?
    Or on the road with cars?
    I find it kinda scare on sidewalk where there are bricks as sometimes a wheel slide in between bricks and I almost falling from it😢

    • @RichHayterSkater
      @RichHayterSkater  2 роки тому +1

      It’s worth watching the tutorial I made for hills. 👍
      If the sidewalk is too narrow I’ll hop onto the road if it’s not too busy, otherwise you can keep your speed down using a combination of drag stops and slalom turns.
      Hills can be scary so it’s best to get confident with them asap.
      Find a small wide hill and practice slalom turns all the way down controlling your speed. It’s helpful if the hill has a grass run off to allow you to bail. Increase the hill size, and reduce the time between each turn as would be needed on a narrower sidewalk.
      You need to practice and then put yourself in the situation where it’s needed. It’s very liberating once you get to grips with it. 👍

      Yeah I also wondered. I saw a guy who had ´rubber sleeves´ for his skate wheels. So he would slip them over the wheels and walk into the store. I looked all over the internet but couldn´t find any. Seems that manufacturer went bust over 20 years ago.
