  • Turning is a very important skill to learn when inline skating; after all, you don’t just want to be skating straight the entire time, and need to be able to skate around or avoid objects if necessary.
    In this video I show you how to do a proper tight turn, what both your upper- and lower body need to be doing to make the turn effective, and also go over the most common mistakes beginners make when turning.
    Have fun watching and then get out and hit the streets!

    tutorials like these really help me out at the age of 29 lol. Did roller blades a couple of times like 20 years ago, now we back practicing and developing basic skills. And its hella fun. Its been 2 days since i started practicing after 20 years, and Im picking up fairly quickly i think thanks to videos like these, but I really struggle with stopping at the moment hehe. But we'll get there hopefully. Thanks!

    Thanks! 43 year old newbie here (started rolling 4 days ago). That upper body explanation was gold for me. I could turn but wasn't aware that it was due to an instinctual upper body twist. After seeing your video and becoming conscious of my upper body twist, I can now turn much sharper and I can also power stop at lower speeds, which I couldn't do before.

    HOLY CATS! FINALLY!! I've been focusing so hard on the "stagger step" and I just. couldn't. get. it. One look at you and the visualization (or actually trying to) touch the ground during the turn and I FINALLY got it. And the additional help of seeing you turn just by turning your upper body. Great tutorial, Marcel! You have the best (ice/inline/hockey) skating tutorials! I've been skiing a lot for a decade now, and now started learning ice skating over the winter and it's awesome. Now with the summer season I also started inline skating, and turning I found to be essential and slightly different than on ice due to the friction. May I ask what brand of inline skates are use using in this video?

    • @MarcelsHockeySchool
      @MarcelsHockeySchool  Рік тому +2

      Hi Balint, thanks a lot! Yes skiing will help you a lot with ice and inline skating, but like you said, turning is different and I find more difficult on inline skates.
      I am actually using my Bauer Hyperlite ice skates with and inline chassis put on them. I haven’t bought inline skates in about 20 years- I just always take a pair of my ice skates that I’m not using anymore and get wheels put on them!

    Sounds like you're using hard wheels from the noise. Can you do those turns on soft and super grippy 80A wheels? I'm on stock 80A wheels atm and the only way I can turn tightly is ironically with crossovers or putting my outside foot ahead of the inside foot. I found it easier to pivot both feet in that setup with the super grippy wheels. I've been trying your technique but it's really hard with super grippy wheels. I did try it over slippier surfaces like super dusty smooth concrete or glass tiled surface and it was easier, I can even do that "semi hockey stop" but not on regular pavement with my 80A wheels and also found it harder on my knees as well. Thanks

    • @MarcelsHockeySchool
      @MarcelsHockeySchool  6 днів тому +1

      Yes I can do the turn with soft wheels outside, even with super soft 74As. What doesn’t work is the semi-hockey stop on the street with super soft wheels- they just grip too much. I think I was using 84A in this vid but I’m not sure 😃

    • @marksIItimewarps
      @marksIItimewarps 2 дні тому

      @@MarcelsHockeySchool Thanks. It seems you're right. Just needed some practice. I used to turn in a similar technique, however, the outside foot is ahead of the inner foot. I sometimes almost fall on my butt with your turning style. The technique seems to cause heavy amount of wear on the wheels esp on the rearmost wheel, inner edge without doing a semi-hockey stop. The least wear turn is still the crossover. Problem with crossover is when you want to slow down during a turn, you speed up instead!
