  • Today I review the Pelikan M800 Fountain Pen. A very well respected pen, and to some people the 'Perfect Pen'. No pen is 'perfect' and I see a few things with this pen that would make me hold off buying one.
    Writing sample included.

Finally a decent review. I’ve spent a couple hours looking for a run through of this model. Great work, thank you for sharing

Thanks for a great review. I just purchased an m805 in blue with an EF nib. I was nervous about paying so much for a pen (though I got a fantastic deal, about 50% off retail), but I am extremely pleased. The attention to detail, excellent balance, quality build and feel, and most of all, writing experience, are top notch. I have several very nice pens a tier or two down in price that I love (e.g., Pilot Custom Heritage 92, Lamy 2000, Platinum 3776), and I can justify this at a cost 2x - 3x of theirs. Any more than that would be tough for me.

I enjoy your reviews very much. Cannot disagree with anything you have said about the Pelikan M800. It is one of my favorite pens. The more I use my M800, the more I like it. My pen has a fine nib. It writes very wet by my standards as I lean toward Sailor fine and medium-fine. My M800 "fine" hits a sweet spot just shy of a Euro medium, with a touch of bounce, and perfect weight/balance. But, Pelikan is definitely a "try before you buy" brand. We need a similar loaner program here in the States.

I love mine. I found one online for $185 a few years ago and bought it (medium nib). For me, it's how it writes. With decent ink (I use the Aurora blue) it is just creamy smooth with no blobbing. I like the M800 better than the M1000 - it doesn't write any better and it's way too big.

I have a question about how broad it is in M nib in comparison to the Parker Duofold M?

Great review. For me, I’m not into status. I like a beautiful pen that writes well, and one that feels good in my hand. Using that criteria, and one you advocate, there are other pens I would prefer first. The ones I would prefer are just as nice, for a lot less. The Platinum President comes to mind, as well as the Pilot Custom Heritage 92 and their 823. Thanks for this review and your philosophy.

TJ Zidaroff the 823 is a pen I have not regretted buying for a second!

In your opinion, which pen brands can be considered to be ‘gushers’ ? Parker Duofold is one, if I am not mistaken but that has issues with fast writing.

My pen is identical and I can say it is the smoothest ,most reliable writer in my whole collection . Yes I have Maki E and all the other good stuff. If anything I would say my Pelikan is a little bit too buttery smooth if that is possible . No feedback nothing . I love this pen.

I wish there were shops in America with a loaner program. You are lucky. That said, I love my m800.

What nib you have on your m800? :)
I would have to choose between medium or bold i think.

Hey! Nice review .. I have to politely, Mildly disagree about your take on this particular Pelikan.
I’ve got an M805 with a Medium nib, and I personally think it an absolute Gusher. Now either you’ve gotten a lemon as a loaner, or I’ve been lucky with my purchase .
As far as nib width is concerned, I’d say the Pelikan M I have, is a hair or fraction lesser than an MB “B”.
I’d urge you to try again, this time with an Edelstein ink, or a J.Herbin ink, ** and perhaps another piece, borrowed from a friend or Niche pens or one of the other authorised sellers..
    cheers mate! 😃
**(Btw, Iroshizuku is a wet ink, but not an awfully smooth one. Pelikan Edelstein inks are smooth and flowy (unlike the regular Pelikan inks), Diamine inks are a good balance of wetness and smoothness too. J. Herbin inks are smooth. Lamy inks are dry. MB makes smooth dry inks (not too flowy)
Of course YMMV, but these are just some of my personal observations .. )

I can only review the pen put in front of me, and while I know it's not going to be the case with all M800s (my own personal one I got after doing this review is much wetter... but still definitely not a gusher... and I have had many inks in it from many different brands) I think we can agree that the pen I had here is not a wet one by any stretch.

Scale from 1 to 10, where is this on your holy grail list?

It's pretty high. I prefer the m800 to the m1000 model. I would love to have one... I just don't know yet if I could justify paying full retail. If 1 was dont want it, and 10 was I need it now! - I'd put an m800 somewhere around an 8.

Although... I would have to make sure the nib was tuned better than this one.

    M400 Lot Keeper's priority
    .
That means long use require suitable pen. - 18542019106
    TWSBI 支支都大大支其實好抵用,M400得580 1/2 咁大,攞出去自然更能說服人。 - 19412019107..

Most of my cheaper pens eventually end up in the garbage. My expensive pens are always worth keeping ( Mont Blanc 149 and Pelikan M1000 ). Don’t buy cheap pens. They always disappoint and are waste of time.
