Congratulations on a very fine pen, and to you for reaching the magic age of retirement, as seen from a swedish perspective - a very good cause for celebration! I am a happy owner of a blue-black-silver M805 - with a two tone nib that I more or less snatched first opportunity, as I found one for sale second hand! It is used and wears its marks proudly. It makes me happy and less afraid to use it in my every day life - I can't spoil the perfect finish, since that job was already performed by the first owner. I've drooled over all reviews I could find of these Pelikan pens for a few years, but I must say that your video here really caught the essence of what this pen is about. I was first a bit underwhelmed by the not supersmooth and somewhat stiff nib. But after using it just a bit, the nib just performs! The grip of the paper just gives that control over the lines when writing and it starts without hesitation. Not even a small tendency to baby's bottom that haunts some other smooth nibs I have used. No pressure needed, and it can handle some pressure if that's part of one's handwriting. Thanks for a very good exposé of this marvel!
My other pens are being neglected because I keep reaching for the Pelikan M800! The "control" you mention is a wonderful thing. Just that touch of feedback to guide the nib on the paper. Awesome pen!
Happy Birthday!! You certainly treated yourself to a fine luxury writing instrument! I have a West German (1970s-80s) made M200. That pen holds a lot of ink, is silky smooth & never hard starts. Even though it’s a cheaper Pelikan, it’s extremely well made. The only thing I don’t like about it, is it’s too damn short! I see an 800 in my future. Great review & birthday grail purchase!
🎊Happy birthday Doug 🎂😊 Glad to see you finally get the ✒️ONE 🏆. An as you said, the thing with grails is that the first one is just the beginning, especially in the fountainpen realm 😂. Thank you for sharing the experience 👍.
Happy birthday! (You don't look a day older than 70 :) When I first got the fountain pen addiction a few years ago, I read up a lot on the web. I purchased a vintage Pelikan from on eBay from a seller in Serbia with a good track record with a fairly long history. It was the classic green celluloid strip. I was thrilled. I inked it up, absolutely loved it. Until it leaked all over my pen pouch and carrying case. Turned out the celluloid barrel had a hairline crack. The pen was worthless. I don't have fountain pen karma like you do. I was burned by Leonardo, too. But I am hanging in nonetheless, and love your embellished reviews.
Awww, Happy Birthday Doug!! Beautiful pen! I have Waterman Serenity Blue in my Pelikan M600 Black Blue. Love the ink, and I find it behaves well in my pen!!
Yea, a couple years late, but Happy Birthday Doug. I have been desiring a M800 as I don't have one. The M600 is less, but is missing some "features" I think would be nice. Brass piston material, slightly larger size, the 18K nib vice the 14k nib. Is the current prices (518.00 ish at Cult pens for M800 seems to be the best I've seen so far). Of course, eBay may have something, but unless I'm looking for a nib I'm not interested in size wise, and/or color I not sure I want, prices on eBay seem elevated or at least the same level the retailers are selling for. Great review, and thank for that. I'm not dead yet, and so I have some more time to keep looking. Taxes are due also, so I can wait... .
My very favourite pen is a Pelikan M600 in the special edition lilac. It's the perfect size for me and the nib is perfectly smooth. I use it with Sailor Manyo Nekoyanagi, which I adore, but its very hard to get hold of at the moment. An excellent choice of grail pen!
Happy birthday and well wear with the M800. I have a M805 Ocean Swirl and it's a beautiful pen to write with and the Ocean Swirl is just mesmerising to look at especially in sunlight. Thanks for a great review and enjoy all your further writings.
I purchased mu first Pelican in the late 80’s, an M800 which I still use. I have added several more such as M600, M815 and M1005. They are all made very well and function flawlessly. Congratulations on your acquisition. Enjoy it for many years to come.
Cult Pens is a great resource. I also bought my long-desired M805 at a great price with free shipping to the USA. I got the Blue Dunes with a broad nib. I have mostly used Edelstein Topaz, as that is the color match recommended by Pelikan. I do like it, but I am still trying a variety of medium to dark blues, and I do have a lot! Congratulations on your birthday and special gift.
Happy Birthday! I own Pelikan M805 blue with rhodium plated trim for 10 months and it is also my Holy Grail pen. I like the design, quality of materials and engineering. The way it writes still surprises me as well as consistent ink flow and how pen communicates when running low on ink. I like ink stained nib too. I usually ink it with Montblanc Petrol Blue or Pelikan Edelstein Sapphire inks.
NICE. Congrats on acquiring your grail pen! Pelikans are always amazing pens. I have yet to see a more detailed review of this pen, your excitement for the pen just makes this more entertaining 👌👌👌
Congratulations on your first Pelikan and Happy Birthday ! You know better than anyone else that ‘the search never ends’ ! I’m pretty sure we’ll get to watch more videos on yet another perfect pen ! How coincidental is that you live in Calgary - I’ve been binge watching ‘Heartland’ here in India !
@@InkquiringMinds Great ! To be honest, I hadn’t heard of Calgary before I started watching Heartland even though I’ve lived in the US for a few years ( mostly in Southern and Northern California).. I know that there’re quite a few places around Vancouver in which most of the Hallmark movies and Series that I’ve watched are filmed ! Calgary Or Vancouver, Canada is quite scenic ! You’re blessed !
Hello Doug. I'm in a quandary. I've wanted a Pelikan for many years and can now afford an M800, moreover after watching the Holy Grail Pen edition you utterly dispelled any doubts about worthiness. Flawless is not a word you use lightly and you did so at least 3 times. My quandary came when I read Joshua's Pelikan's perch article about the firm has stopped making translucent barrel stripes, a very clever, subtle and iconic solution to ink level amount. I wanted to buy my new Pelikan from The Writing Desk here in England as they are the only ones offering a cursive italic broad nib suiting my favourite style; calligraphic handwriting. This is what they published on the matter, raising a question: The Pelikan Souverän series represents the highest quality in writing instrument manufacture using only the best materials available. All models feature Pelikan's unique differential piston filling system to ensure a large ink capacity with the barrel's hallmark striped celluloid overlay that has been associated with Pelikan fountain pens for half a century. Note that Pelikan M800 blue striped fountain pens no longer feature a transparent ink window (as of 2022). The question I have is just how much of the beloved celluloid is left on the new pens. I feel like the tablecloth has been yanked away along with my lovely meal. I want a new Pelikan so much, but feel lost and confused and know not what to do now. What are your thoughts Doug, what would you do? Please keep making your objective, helpful and entertaining channel. Yours sadly, Jason North.
You can search shops for an M800 that is NOS (new old stock) and ask specifically if it has a transparent barrel. There still may be stock out there. Next thing would be to buy used.
I too have never held a Pelikan Fountain pen. I’ve always been interested but, being completely out of my price range l, I didn’t put too much effort into diving into it. Now, because of your video, it is now back on my radar. Maybe it will be my Grail pen too! I can’t see anything wrong with it either! I just would love to hold it, and write with it. That would be the clincher. I’m glad you are enjoying your Grail pen immensely! Cheers
Happy belated birthday and it's a worthy one! This is my grail pen too....for my 65th end of the year. I did splash out last year with the m600 because I was a bit worried the 800 will be too big for my small hands, but I since changed my mind because I like heavier pens. I had the same great experience with my 600, absolutely love it and can't wait to get the 800. My 600 is also blue and filled with aso gao...perfect match! Enjoy your pen.
Many happy returns Doug on reaching your 65th, beautiful looking pen & intrested in your glowing overall experience of the pen.I have liked the look of the M805 for many years, who knows now i made my last mortgage payment last month it could become a reallity. The medium nib looks to write like a broad.Enjoy your birthday👍
Great review and a beautiful pen collection. That blue body is stunning. I just got my M800 but I purchased it in green with a B nib. I have been using it with the Pelikan Koningsblau. I had read this nib was wet. However, when I compare it to my Montblancs 146 and 149 with their respective Montblanc royal blue ink , I feel they are smoother and wetter. Will try a wetter ink on my Pelikan. I still wonder if an M1000 would have been a better choice for me due to its springy nib. Anyway, thanks for sharing
Congrats on your Grail pen Doug, and have a great Birthday . All the best people are born on April 21st prime examples are yourself, the Queen, and me ! Today I hot footed to our local tool emporium and purchased my Grail angle grinder, bought for me by Daniel, our youngest son. I Vaguely remember being 65 but I've had a few sleeps since then, and six years have passed in the blink of an eye. 😱 Peace and love be with you and yours ✌❤ Rob.
2:49 I was just reminiscing the other day about Romancing the Stone to my sister. Haven’t seen this movie in so long. And I need to find my copy of the Holy Grail. I may have to buy it again in fact. I love watching all the clips of the movies that I have watched throughout the years in your videos. Cheers
Store discount, no hassle shipping and a beautiful pen that writes well? The birthday elves blessed you for your earnestness, Mr. Doug! I'm glad you like it. I'd like to have the Pelikan experience one of these days. Now you don't need a Sailor King of Pen because you've got yourself a King pen! Happy birthday and many more, friend 🎂❤️
Happy Birthday! I don't have anything as fancy as a Pelikan M800, but a blue ink I have been really favoring lately is the 3 Oysters Sea of Notions Doming Blue. It has a diluting agent that comes in a separate bottle where it can get to the color of the ink you used, but I have lately been enjoying it in its non-diluted form. I have a video on the ink on my channel (2 if you include the postcard video I made recently with the ink undiluted), and Figboot on Pens also did a great video on it. The deeper, undiluted color sort of reminded me of the blue finish on your grail pen.
Happy Birthday Doug. Nice pen well described. New to the hobby but wanted a grail pen for my 60th birthday. This one was a little too dear but I took your advice on the Platinum President. This M800 is still on the "to do" list.
Happy Birthday! What a wonderful grail pen birthday gift! 🎉 I love my Pelikan m205 and my grail is the m400 White Tortoiseshell. Maybe this summer after teaching a year through this pandemic! 😅 Enjoy your milestone birthday and pen!
Belated wishes on your 65th birthday, Doug! I wish I had seen this video sooner and been able to wish you on time. This was a bitter-sweet video for me. Happy for you that you got your grail pen. You ought to rejoice! It’s also a sad reminder to me that I’ve still quite inexplicably, inexcusably yet to own a Pelikan pen myself. For somebody who loves broad, wet, juicy gold nibs best, I should have been the first to get a Pelikan, with their seemingly universal reputation for producing nibs of that caliber and ones that also reputedly write a wider (and wetter) line than their designated nib size would suggest. I was on the brink of buying a M605 during the Christmas holidays, but I bought yet another Aurora 88, which is my own grail pen. But I now have eight of them. Time to aspire to a new grail pen, then. Kudos for your acquisition. And thanks for the fine and necessary review of the same.
Hope you had a great birthday! Great looking pen! Really stunning! I completely understand having to sell pens to get another one you like more. I'm trying to get several together and try to do just that, myself. Thanks for sharing this beautiful pen, and information on the Pelikan brand in general!
I bought the Pelikan M800 brown stripe with a medium nib last November and it's a real beauty, and writes like a dream. After seeing yours I'm lusting for the blue stripe, lol.

When I first got the fountain pen addiction a few years ago, I read up a lot on the web.
Thank you, William!
Awww, Happy Birthday Doug!! Beautiful pen! I have Waterman Serenity Blue in my Pelikan M600 Black Blue. Love the ink, and I find it behaves well in my pen!!
Thanks, Sandy! My pen store was out of Serenity and I got some Mysterious instead. I'm not that impressed by it.
Well, UGH to that Doug! SBREBrown uses Serenity Blue so I thought I’d pick up a bottle at one point. I can send you a sample if you’d like! 😁
Not a problem Sandy thanks. It is back in stock again and way less expensive than Edelstein!
Happy birthday, Doug!🥰OMG I just ordered a Pelikan M800 in green from Cult pen last week as well🙂 I am excited
Good choice! Let me know when you get it! So exciting! :)
Great choice, and with Topaz, my all time favourite ink colour.
Happy birthday Mr.Douglas! And Happy birthday ... me also! 😆 cheers!
Happy birthday! Yayyy! You me and the Queen.
Belated Happy Birthday! Good health and much joy!
Thank you, Mihai!
Many more happy returns of day Doug! Stunning pen!
Thank you so much 😀
Yea, a couple years late, but Happy Birthday Doug. Taxes are due also, so I can wait... .
I just brought one using your 10% link. Can't wait to receive it!
Excellent!
Professor Doug, Happy Birthday sir let the OAS begin. A truly beautiful pen well chosen as a grail.
Hey Coach! Thank you kindly!
Thanks for sharing! Sailor inks are hard to get out here too.
Happy Birthday!! Great choice of a birthday gift.
Yes it was! Thanks GLC!
Happy birthday Doug!
Thank you, Nick!
Happy birthday and well wear with the M800. I have a M805 Ocean Swirl and it's a beautiful pen to write with and the Ocean Swirl is just mesmerising to look at especially in sunlight.
Thanks for a great review and enjoy all your further writings.
Thanks Paddy!
Happy birthday Douglas and beautiful grail pen. Enjoy your day and your pen!
Thank you kindly, Andrea!
Happy birthday, birthday buddy!
Thanks!
I purchased mu first Pelican in the late 80’s, an M800 which I still use. I have added several more such as M600, M815 and M1005. They are all made very well and function flawlessly. Congratulations on your acquisition. Enjoy it for many years to come.
Thanks for sharing
Love the M800 - I bought my partner an M805 Ocean Swirl and myself an M815 Metal Stripes, they really do feel special.
Totally agree! That Ocean Swirl is killer!
Blessings on a new year! And congratulations on finding the Grail. The M800 is my Impossible Dream pen.
Thank you, Rob!
Thank you, Michael!
Great way to celebrate a birthday, indeed! Enjoy it in good health! What's Up Tiger Lily?!!! Nice treat, thanks...Spartan dog. Cheers!
Spanish Fly!
Thanks for sharing! Some nibs look awful when they capture ink on the top, but the exquisite scrollwork on the Pelikan just makes it look awesome!
NICE. Congrats on acquiring your grail pen! Pelikans are always amazing pens. I have yet to see a more detailed review of this pen, your excitement for the pen just makes this more entertaining 👌👌👌
Thanks a bunch!
Thanks so much! 😊 There is a lot of great film production in and around Calgary. Fargo was shot here too.
@@InkquiringMinds Oh ! Good to know.. Which season(s) ? I’ve watched all except Season 4..
@@sathishrao7926 The first three seasons were all filmed in Calgary. Season four is filmed in Chicago.
Best review of Pelikan fountain pen thank you for kindly showing it’s great side splendid indeed
If I could ever afford my holy grail it would be the pilot falcon. Or a MB 149. Happy Birthday!!
This is what they published on the matter, raising a question:
The Pelikan Souverän series represents the highest quality in writing instrument manufacture using only the best materials available.
Yours sadly,
Jason North.
You can search shops for an M800 that is NOS (new old stock) and ask specifically if it has a transparent barrel. There still may be stock out there. Next thing would be to buy used.
Hertzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag!
Ich danke dir sehr!
happy Belated Birthday! Another great review of a great looking pen! Thanks for the links for the additional information.
My pleasure!
Happy birthday, Doug. May you enjoy that grial pen for many many years.
Thank you, I will
Happy birthday to you, Doug. And what a splendid wand you chose to mark your day!
Thank you kindly!
Happy Birthday Mr Indi 🎊🎂🎉🎉🎊🎊💐. God bless you with good health and happiness
Thank you, K. Manikantan Tirumulpad!
Cheers
I wish I could afford another. My new grail Pelikan is an M1000 Stresemann.
@@InkquiringMinds oh, well! I’m not familiar with that pen. I’m off to look into it now. Lol
Very cool!
Happy Birthday and thank you for all you do!
Thank you too!
Thanks, will do!
Happy B Day.
An excelent pen...bravo!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you, Rob!
Happy Birthday Doug. Enjoy that grail!
My grail is actually the 805 (I'm more of a silver person).
Thank you, Craig! Whatever floats your Pelikan! :)
Happy Birthday Doug! And congratulations on the grail acquisition, hope you enjoy it for years to come.
Thanks a bunch!
Cheers
Thank you so much!
Wow, thank you, Amy! I never had a KOP in my sights but definitely a Sailor 1911L with a Zoom or Music nib!
You never know until you get them into your hands....How Big they are how Beautiful....🤔🤔🤔......Happy Birthday....
Yes! Thank you!
Happy birthday, Doug! Enjoy the M800. That is one of my Grail pens as well.
Thanks! Will do!
Thanks so much! I'll check it out!
Happy Birthday from Germany, stay safe.
Thank you very much!
Congratulations Doug, and Happy Birthday !
Thank you, John!
Happy birthday Doug! Congratulations on the new pen and best wishes for the future!
Thank you very much!
Happy Birthday Doug. Nice pen well described. New to the hobby but wanted a grail pen for my 60th birthday. This one was a little too dear but I took your advice on the Platinum President. This M800 is still on the "to do" list.
Right on! My Platinum President is in my EDC case and has a very unique and very pleasant feedback.
Happy Birthday! What a wonderful grail pen birthday gift! 🎉 I love my Pelikan m205 and my grail is the m400 White Tortoiseshell. Maybe this summer after teaching a year through this pandemic! 😅 Enjoy your milestone birthday and pen!
Thank you, Anita!
Beautiful choice. The truly great pen.
Thanks!
Many more Doug! So true...there's always another on the horizon!
LOL! True! Thanks, Wendy.
Thank you for your best wishes and for sharing Sajjad! :)
Stunning grail pen , congrats. and happy b-day
Thank you so much Luc! 😀
Happy Birthday!!!!
Thank you, William!
Happy birthday, and congrats on achieving grail status!
Thank you so much 😀
Congrats on getting your grail pen! That's awesome.
I love it!
Happy Birthday! Thank you for your time and efforts in preparing these videos.
Thank you very much!
Hope you had a great birthday! Great looking pen! Really stunning!
I completely understand having to sell pens to get another one you like more. I'm trying to get several together and try to do just that, myself.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful pen, and information on the Pelikan brand in general!
Thanks so much! 😊
Happy birthday! I really enjoy and appreciate your pen reviews and your humor.
Thank you so much!
I bought the Pelikan M800 brown stripe with a medium nib last November and it's a real beauty, and writes like a dream. After seeing yours I'm lusting for the blue stripe, lol.
It is such a magnificent pen!
