It's amazing because it's Gorillaz with Elton John in it. Neither sacrifice any semblance of their style and the song doesn't suffer for it. That's what's amazing about it to me.
The Phantom 5 was a reference to Elton’s percussionist Ray Cooper who is friends with Damon’s family, who picked Damon up in the pink Phantom 5 when he was young and the memory stuck with him. He believed at the time that it was owned by Elton but it turned out that it was Ray’s. whether Elton bought it for Ray or not is not known. Damon asked Elton about it and Elton said he never owned a pink one.

elton went on tour with his band in the soviet union that year, he wasnt able to pay his musicians in money so he paid them in coal, logs, and gifts. Ray Cooper received the Phantom V

Elton is a gem. Will collaborate with anyone. Released an album last year of colabs. Done song with 2pac, ozzy osbourne, miley cyrus to name a few

i think a lot of if not all of the songs in the song machine music video series (labeled as episodes, the album itself is also good of course) are worth watching, especially because each song is very unique. seeing those songs release during the pandemic every 1-2 months in 2020 was one of the things that really carried me through the early pandemic.
specifically this song even got to my mom without my knowledge since she likes elton john. my favorite part of the song are actually the background vocals and the fact that the different styles just mix so well.
actually looked up the meaning of the song and found this out...
"A childhood ride in Elton John's Rolls Royce Phantom V that thrilled the young Damon Albarn inspired the song. Albarn recalled to Mojo magazine: "When I was about 7 or 8 - and this initially sounds very weird - I got picked up from school in Elton John's pink Phantom by his percussionist Ray Cooper, who was a friend of my parents. I was going to his nephew's party, who was my friend. It was very, very, very exciting."
Absolutely beautiful composition in this one. Three different vocal lines, going in and out verse, bridge and chorus and melt together in a wonderful grand finale. And Elton hasn´t sung that great in a while imho.
First time listening I couldn't figure why 6LACK's verse was on this song. After the third time I freaking love what he adds to it.
Late, but I was appalled to see people claim that 6LACK's verses ruined this song. I can't imagine this song without them.

I read a comment on the music video that this song represents youthful happiness that we held on dearly but forget when we get older, and almost bittersweet when we think about it.

Now that you've taken the deep dive into Gorillaz music, you absolutely have to listen to Ascension. Although it doesn't have a music video, it's absolutely an amazing song with great lyrics. Empire Ants, Kansas and Strobelite are also amazing. Aries, Friday 13th, 19-2000, Slow Country. So many great ones

I think the one album from Gorillaz that feels the most consistent from beginning to end is The Now Now.
Magic City, Fireflies, and Kansas are all such "hypnotic" grooves with only 2-D singing (a min guest vocals throughout), making it for some, a boring album, but it's been my fav since they first started, and I've been following them since the beginning lol. Sadly, no music videos for those songs, but hope you check them out later.

@@esteban280889 Lore wise, I can see that as reasoning with some songs giving off either "I'm free" vibes but also some "it's not the same" vibes. Cause The Fall was a more personal album for 2-D as well, however it was a side project off am iPad while still having Murdoc around.
The Now Now is definitely one of my favorite albums, though if you're not as into the chill vibes Gorillaz does I can see why someone else may not like the album as much. I can see why some people would think it's boring. It's definitely not my roommate's favorite for example. I think he's really into Plastic Beach (probably my #4 album) for how experimental the tracks could get. I enjoy a lot of the songs, but some of the features were a bit much for me.
I like a nice blend of features in my Gorillaz albums so while one of my friends is really into Humanz, that album just doesn't do much for me aside from a few standout tracks like Andromeda or Saturnz Barz. It felt way too feature heavy with less of a focus on the Gorillaz members or Damon's voicework to sort of recenter the album.
I definitely think Song Machine has taken my #1 spot though, which is hard to believe since Demon Days was in that spot for the longest time. I think while I have a lot of nostalgic love for Demon Days, some of the songs make me think too much about the ongoing conflicts that were happening at the time due to the political nature of the album. It can be a bit hard for me to separate myself from that time when hearing the music.

I believe the back story on this one is that one of the musicians in the Gorillaz his uncle was a roadie for Elton John and because of some contract or taxing issues he didn’t pay them cash but in goods and the guys uncle received Elton’s pink phantom.

There is no umbrella big enough to cover the entirety of the Gorrilaz, unless, big IF. It simply said "Art" on the umbrella. I would argue for the word "Good", but that is purely an opinion and subjective.
The song is following the band story, canon. As 2d pleasantly reminisces on his summer... Time free to express himself as spike was in jail. Note the new bass player in rhe last few clips. Yet still that phantom is there.... albeit literally jow as spike has escaped.

I like the Hand of Glory burning on the piano. Not sure what that was suppose to symbolize. Care to speculate ?
In old folklore the hand of glory is supposed to do two things: open locked/barred doors and immobilize anyone who sees it other than the wielder. A macabre tool most useful for thieves, and it could be a subtle nod to the thief "The Phantom" from "The Pink Panther", given the song title and the animation style. There also may be some potential metaphor there in relation to the themes of hazy memories of a dead relationship and nostalgia for a surreal ride in a celebrity's pink Phantom, but I'm not sure exactly what they were going for if that's the case.
