Don't know if you noticed but the band did get a new member in this video. New bassist Ace from The Gangreen Gang from Powerpuff Girls. Murdoc was serving hard time during this album
Fun fact: At the basketball court that is Ace, a villain from The Powerpuff Girls. He temporarily joined as the bands bassist while Murdoc was in jail.
I've always been aware of Gorillaz but never actually got into them until I saw Craig McCracken tweet a picture of some art he contributed to the art book and I learned about this crossover. Now I listen to Gorillaz on probably a daily basis lol
This album doesn’t have Murdoc on it, that’s why it’s brighter and more pop-y Also, react to Fire Flies from the same album! I love the syncopated beat; I think the switch is from 3/4 to 5/4, within the same phrase, and it’s amazing!
It also gets pretty brooding and mellow on top of brighter. It feels like more 2D's album than any other since it's heavily suggested Murdoc has a major impact on the albums' style. It's interesting to see that side of 2D, off the heels of drug addiction and self reflecting on the past, the future, and obviously the now.
Gorillaz is all about collabs with other artists in every music. I recommend Pac-Man, Desolé, Aries, Pink Phantom (You already reacted to most of my favs :P)
Desole, Pacman, the Lost Chord, and Soux Eye from them is fire and I would highly suggest since I got into this band literally a year ago and went into the wiki page to see what lore people were talking about...it is honestly so cool
I still love that the first time Murdock is gone, 2-Ds first instinct is to "want him in the picture" while acknowledging that he is mentally better off if he didn't.
This song was really great....But when I first saw this (years ago) I was so confused as where Murdoc was, and why 2D had white eyes instead of black. I had to go on a deep dive of lore to figure out where the new guy came from, what happened, why Russel seemed to hate 2D, and everything. That was a trip. But I got to listen to a lot of music, because I had forgotten about Gorillaz for a few years, and this was the first song I had listened to in a while.....Since Plastic Beach.
@@taftkuykendall1887 That's awesome. I never watched Power Puff Girls. I had a few friends who liked it, but my son preferred Samurai Jack. And Magic School Bus. I can remember SO much of MSB.
You nailed it at the end, there is a bit of speculation about many gorillaz videos and lyrics, and this is no exception. The key factor here is the white eyes. People claim it's 2D's emotions, but the white eyes have been a sign of people who are possessed or were possessed. Murdoc and Noodle have normal eyes, Russel has white eyes because he was possessed, and 2D has black eyes because of his accident in this younger years. Now, Jack Black is not seen and acknowledged by anybody in the video. Nobody sees him, and actually, only a few people recognize 2D. We can safely assume that 2D is existing. But my Belief is that indeed, Jack Black is a demon of some sorts, Demons and Devils are a big thing in the Gorillaz lore, see the boogeyman for example, and the riders of the apocalypse, the Del the Demon, and so on. We can assume that Jack is a Demon as well, and has possessed 2D, and gives him a good time. This is the first time that he is FREE of Murdoc who bullies him, and this makes 2D too self-assured, over confident. We see him acting reckless in the Video. Too happy for his own good, maybe, too open, too wild. Jack Black mimics the lyrics 2D sings while skating. This is a giveaway that he is actually possessing him. When Jack Black falls in the end, we see 2D trip because of Russel. Russel in turn trips 2D, to "get rid of his Demon". Jack Black emphasizes this with his last gesture, he uses his guitar, with the neck upwards and "nods" it towards 2D. This is a gesture "and down on the ground you go!", its body language to emphasize "you belong on the ground like that". Jack Black then walks off, as 2D's eyes become black again. Another proof of this is, the song stops, as does Jack Black and 2D's singing, and thus the "possession" is at an end - and 2D immediately forgets how to rollerskate!!! He immediately struggles and can't skate anymore. This is another proof that the Demon Jack gave him all this "happyness power" so to say. The lyrics kind of reflect that as well. "I don't want this isolation See the state I'm in now?" is a homage to Murdoc. Inside he knows that he is not the same anymore, he is not his true self. "I'm the lonely twin, the left hand Reset myself and get back on track" points this out directly. Murdoc is the other twin, the other hand, he wants to reset himself and get back on the track he was. This is hidden behind all the happyness that 2D radiates. "If I pick it up when I know that it's broken Do I put it back? Or do I head out on to the lonesome track and let you go?" is a bit harder to decypher, but in essence, it is himself asking if he should go on, broken and without his "Murdoc", without his old self and his "friend/enemy", do we try to fix things and find a solution, or do we let the old past go, and stay on our track that makes us broken? A certain social media platform speculated this is all about "drugs", but not really, no, not really. You can interpret as that, surely. But even if the lyrics were confirmed by Gorillaz themselves to be around drugs, you would have in combination of the Music video, a whole different picture, an actual storyline. And that is definitely not about drugs, or maybe drugs are a metaphor, it is most surely about the state of affairs of Gorillaz, and the state of 2D. The Jack Black Demon is the key figure in the clip, in contrast to Russel, who trips 2D, in an effort to ground him back to reality, to the harsh facts that things are as they are. They are short one Murdoc, and even though things go "well", Murdoc was the founder and the Boss Boss, using 2D as a wannabe Frontman for the group. But Murdoc is the star after all. The song is very interesting to say the least, and to be honest. There are songs that are debated even more, and make absolutely no sense in the eyes of even the hardest fans, because of the strange lyrics, or strange lyrics/music video combination, when there even is an official video.
Hearing Gorillaz is for me like a deep music meditation. Empire Ants (2010) from the Album Plastic Beach. It's a very interesting beautiful song. Greetings from the Baltic Sea!
I was really hoping you would get to this one, it became one of my favorite songs period during quarantine, really helped me to cope with everything going on. Another one I would absolutely love to see you cover is Strobelite
Not sure if you're aware, but Jack Black has his own band named Tenacious D. They're hilarious. So it's not totally weird that he'd know a lot of musicians & pop up in their videos.
This is a bit of a homage to George Benson's video for Give Me the Night. In the video George is roller skating while playing the guitar. Jack Black I think is replacing George Benson in a sense as I think he is retired, but he is credited as Gorillaz is using a sample of his
Fun fact the guy who popped up basketball is the leader of the gang green gang of the Powerpuff Girls they have some form of crossover and you can find some characters of Gorillaz in some episode of the Powerpuff Girls before the reboot
Man, I wish someone had told him before that the Gorillaz videos are in a story order. Also, he didn't notice that Murdoc wasn't in this, but Ace from the Powerpuff Girls was "Filling in" on bass for him because at the time, Murdoc was in a jail I believe in Mexico? but he did end up escaping\
It's funny you say this looks like gta, one of their music videos for their most recent project, Song Machine, is actually recorded in gta 5. I believe the song is Valley of the Pagans, featuring Beck
This song in the lore of gorillaz murdoc is in jail and 2-D is kinda happy about it and they have Ace from the gang green gang from the power puff girls as there bass player
This song happens to be off the album called [The Now Now] and is one of their more recent releases. Certainly topical on purpose. Also the guy that stabbed the basketball is indeed one of the Gangreen Gang (from the Power Puff Girls) making a cameo. Gorillaz works with all sorts of artists.
" I don't think we needed to see them from that low angle, at least I know I don't" *Proceeds to watch it again, with that, particular look on his face.*
3:20 fun fact. That is Ace from the power puff girls, legit. Gorillaz exists within the power puff girls universe and ace became the bassist of the band after Murdoc got sent to prison
Jack Black isn't the only guest in this video. Since in the lore Murdoc has arrested by US Customs, they got Ace, one of the villains fron the Powerpuff Girl cartoon, to be the temporary bassist
In case anyone wanted to know that was Ace from Power Puffs Girl. Murdock was in jail during this particular time. It's part of the somewhat story. LoL
Fun fact, the green character in this video is actually not 'Murdoc' the character you are used to seeing in Gorillaz videos. Thanks to an old friendship this is actually Ace from the Green Gang in the Powerpuff girls, he is replacing murdoc in the band while murdoc is in prison or something... i forget the whole story.

Doh. Didn't see your post there. Didn't mean to step on it. Sorry.!
Also the reason why 2d's eyes are healed, Murdoc being in jail.
🤷🏿♀️ When he gets out 🤦🏿♀️ they'll still let him drive... 🤪
Fun fact: At the basketball court that is Ace, a villain from The Powerpuff Girls. He temporarily joined as the bands bassist while Murdoc was in jail.
Supposedly Gorillaz and Powerpuff Girls live in the same universe as each entity has reference the other in their movies / videos.
Gangreen Gang represent.

Desole is so fire bro
That Peter Hook bass line in Aries 🎶🕺🎶
Everyone leaves out Momentary Bliss, so damn good.
Pink Phantom is a great song.
every?
I wanna see him react to pacman or Lost chord next :D
Yes! Pacman is my fav song
or maybe the pink phantom good song and elton john is there
Just react to the whole song machine project every song is a banger.
Friday the 13th is a shadow fave
Ooh, lost chord.
Desole, Pacman, the Lost Chord, and Soux Eye from them is fire and I would highly suggest since I got into this band literally a year ago and went into the wiki page to see what lore people were talking about...it is honestly so cool

Each Album has a theme and tells a story. Specially with the characters. Plus their a snook that explains alot
Rhinestone Eyes is amazing by them.

One of my favorite Gorillaz songs is Submission ft Danny Brown and Kelela. It's one of the best Danny Brown verses.

His eyes turn black because of internal hemorrhaging.

"This looks like GTA" that didn't exactly work out for them last time...
Pretty sure this was filmed in Venice beach or Santa Monica, California hence the GTA V vibes as Vespucci beach is based on both.

This one features the great jazz guitarist George Benson
For a nice lil dance-soul-bop of a song, check out Strobelite from the Gorillaz (ft Peven Everett).

🥰 Noodle said "Get the cool. Get the cool Shoe shine..." 🤷🏿♀️ But you have to watch '19-2000' Gorillaz video to understand. 😁🐰
the best way to explain Gorillaz's albums is like MCU phases and most videos connect throughout

Jack Black may be miming the guitar :) but it's the legendary George Benson actually playing it!
Just incase ua didn't know the green dude is popping the ball is the gane green gang leader from Powerpuff girls just a Easter egg for who didn't know
