    When I was sailing I probably fixed 100+ vessels that had a variety of problems. Many of the problems were in desperate need of a spare, but the owners didn’t have one. If you’re going off shore on the high seas, be sure that you have spares for all vital parts and systems, necessary manuals, and the knowledge and ability to make everything work.

    Much love and respect.

    Perhaps on your next drone you might consider a floating one or strapping some lightweight foam under the frame so you can recover it if needed. Talulah is such a firecracker and so cute and beautiful too; she is steeling the show from you, what are you going to do? Good job on the starter, now you're on your way.

    You can usually bypass a starter solenoid with exposed terminals by shorting them with a big old screwdriver. It might slightly damage the screwdriver when it arcs

    Dude, engine failure is when a piston comes through the block, not a solenoid that only needs to be cleaned up. Fair winds and following seas on your way across the Indian ( mother fooking) Ocean. I spent 10 months on Diego Garcia in 1971. A wooden ketch with 3 Aussies on board stopped there and gave me the sailing bug.

    I always get a bit nostalgic when I watch your videos in that part of the world. It used to be "my" world, too, born in Medan but also knowing Padang well because I used to live there in my teens. My sister was born in Padang although we eventually moved to Jakarta. Decades later I found myself in Indonesia again, as well as Brunei/Sarawak, Singapore and Manila. Now I am 83 years old, live in North Queensland and I will never see any of it again. I find myself watching some of your videos two or three times! I find myself being nervous about your Indian Ocean crossing but at the time of writing I believe you're already well on your way to Mauritius. Vaya con Dios!

    I could completely feel the pain of that starter being in the absolute worst engine position, 4 hours later, with two cans of wd40 and a pile of tools laying about. It just always ends up that way doesn't it? Great work on getting it fixed! Loved seeing the slower sailing life in this video, y'all are such an inspiration!

  • @mgunning7362
    @mgunning7362 25 днів тому

    you said it yourself, only 10v at the starter. Even tho you fixed the solenoid yoy gotta find where youe losing the 2.8volts.
    Use your voltmeter to read the voltage drop along the positive cable, select a manual voltage range (not auto) on the meter (smallest range higher than 12V). put red probe on batt positive, black probe on starter positive stud. It will read zero before you start cranking, when cranking it will read the voltage loss along the cable.
    Do same for negative cable.
    After you find and fix the voltage drop your starter will crank much faster.
    PS think a bit dodgy charging starter batt from DCDC, too many points of possible failure and also inefficient. it should be charged direct from altenator.
    Mark

    Boy that is a crappy way to start for sure Could see the misery on both of ya. Yosh since you have a new starter coming might be worth seeing if a kit is available for the old one to replace the brushes etc and at least have all that stuff on board for down the road. Hauling spares is a pain, but it beats the heck outta not having them. Loos like the solenoid is a sperate deal, maybe one of them too... I know you can make things work if ya have the parts...having the parts is the trick right?

    Question : why don't you get a floating waterproof drone ? Not throwing shade , I assume there is a reason like battery life or range and am curious as I contemplate getting one for my boat .
