  • the engine and vehicle get old. most will not get the recommended oil change service and some may never get oil change, instead the oil is just top-up to maintain engine oil level and engine operation. heavily contaminated engine and sludge build-up is a detrimental thing to engine moving parts and oil passage ways. most high mileage engine will experience hydraulic lifter tap, rattle, knock noise. a sound that is not normal or helpful to engine performance. once the oil passage way have become restrictive, parts will begin to knock and rattle. this is what's happening with most high mileage hydraulic lifters.

Thank you for the videos! We (the Xterra fans on the forums) have found them very useful, especially the ones you did some time ago on the timing belt/water pump/crank pulley replacement - I used it to do my own belts with some help from a local mobile tech.
Can you help me as a new DIYer understand why it is important to keep the lifters upright once lubricated? I see it mentioned in the FSM (factory service manual) but am not clear on the reasoning.

The lifter must be compress to remove all oil for propper installation. Only a lightly lube is allow in the lifter before installation.
