I currently work at a tech company and we also have an open space office plan. I would love to have a closed office space, but not per person, but per team. So each team (of around 6 people) have their own little office space. You can still intensily work with your team, but you are not interrupted by other people.
I used to work at a tech company but over time things felt so dull. I missed the human interaction, aside from some calls and meetings, you mostly spend your day staring at a monitor. Every day just felt like a grind. I started consuming more and more coffee, just to keep my dopamine levels up I guess. After 6 years I left the field and became a teacher. The pay is worse, I’m a hell of a lot more busy, but man, I’m so glad I took the leap. Never regretted it one moment.
It’s amazing that you have your own office honestly. Does everyone have an office or just the more experienced engineers ,while everyone else has a cube?
@@triplefreeerror They also have open plans on the Puget Sound Campus in about half of the buildings. It all depends on the team and their requirements.
My own office is my bedroom since I work from home these days, thank you for your genuine insight into what it's like to work at Microsoft. I'd love to be a developer there one day
I love how all of these GAFAM employees spending their working days. Walking around, eating, drinking millions cups of coffee and looking at the python code for 3 minutes. My only goal now is to be hired in such company and enjoy life.
So refreshing to have decent humour in these styles of video, great work. You don’t need to turn the monitors on you can just press any key to wake the machine. But then again you work at Microsoft so there’s probably a reason you’re turning the screens on manually.
I absolutely hate my workplace's open planned offices. It's just rows of desks and is very busy. A stark contrast to my nice office at home where I tend to be my most productive.
Hey Jason, thanks for your great videos and taking your time to put them out to us. The wife and I lived a little down south of you in Lacey, WA for 3.5yrs but just moved to FL for a tech job a month ago. The weather was really depressing most of the year for her, but if we lived in Seattle I think she would have loved everything being so close and being able to go on walks. Microsoft looks dope by the way! Currently working as a sysadmin labeled as Linux CST, mostly doing in person customer support with windows laptops and printers, some network handling and basic Linux engineering 😆 but I’m not 100% sure where I’d like to take my career in the future. Programming… sysadmin… network admin? 🤷♂️ I always wanted to learn programming as a kid. Played a little with sourcepawn, html, batch, sql, now shell while configuring Windows, editing DLLs for game hacking (rip), game severs (lawl) or setting up forum software… but I never dove deep into it, just tutorial script kiddie kind of stuff 😄 Truly, I am a noob. I always told myself I need to pickup a C++ book but never did 😬 I definitely need to learn Python now though! Anyways, hope you are doing well and your time at MS going great 👍🏼 Keep up the good work!
Amazing video. This is exactly how a day as a software engineer should look like. I would enjoy that very much, though I want to become a game developer(indie game team)
We are a smaller IT company which has one space we all sit in (with 3 people at the moment and the rest works from home) I would also love my own office space but I also work a lot from home, so when I feel like having privacy I just stay at home.
This is exactly the life I want. Next year I’m going into computer science at university and I’m very anxious that I might not perform well and that im not smart enough.
You will do well, I’m in my last year at my university for information technology. I had two computer science courses on my curriculum guide. Python is much easier and I’m still learning as well. Java was complicated… you will do fine! Just study hard and believe in yourself. Work on independent projects outside of school and network with others. You got this bro!
@@JasonGoodison expense wise and time wise yes but I wish to have at least a hybrid setup so I can mingle with people every now and then unfortunately my new job which I'm about to start on Monday is also full remote since the bosses are in another country. 🤦♂️😂
Agreed with the open spaces part. I personally prefer my own office space where I can work and think all alone. Might just be because I like being alone but I'm able to work this way much better
Thanks for an awesome walk through of your work day! Pretty awesome to see! I work in tech but on the opposite site of the fence as an SRE. Any advice to stay motivated?

Holy shit I'd love my own office. I hate WFH and my permanent desk is open plan, so noise travels and it always feels like I'm being watched. No real privacy.
For those who are interested in studying about open office spaces vs closed office spaces, you might want to look into the concept of introverts and extroverts explored in the book titled "Quiet" by Susan Cain.
Great video! Interesting about the closed offices. Do you get much interaction with your coworkers? It seems like you could go all day without seeing anyone. I think I’d miss the socialising aspect and solving problems collaboratively.
