  • This week’s video sees us continue from where we left you last week. We cruise our NARROWBOAT floating home from Marsworth Junction through to Leighton Buzzard. The weather is mega WINDY so I try out my microphone again, but it made the sound go ‘wonky’! The mic blocked out the wind ok, but it also blocked out the ambient sound too 🤦‍♀️ so no water, no boat engine, no birds, no rustling trees etc. Please bear with it though, as it doesn’t last for the whole vlog, only a short while, then back to usual sound. We eventually moor up and try again the next day….again in high winds, but we needed to get to Leighton Buzzard before Storm Babet arrived. Please leave us a comment below, we love to get feedback!
    Hope you enjoy this vlog! xx 😃

    Hi, we’re Mikey & Andrew, we’re great fans of your channel and have seen all your vlogs from the start and look forward to your news each week. We feel we’ve learned a great deal from your content along with a couple of other vloggers and this has helped us plan for our own change in lifestyle.
    We plan to make the move to a nb within the next year or at least commit to a build slot. Obviously questions arise from time to time which we would love to be able to ask people with real experience; hence our message!
    We have heard a lot about the big increases in the boat license over the coming few years and we’d love to know what you think about it. Can you share any thoughts please? Do you think it will push a lot of people to look for a “home mooring” to keep things cheaper?
    Thank you so much and keep doing what you do! ☺️☺️

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  9 місяців тому

      Hi Mikey & Andrew, thank you so much for watching our videos, so lovely to have you with us! Exciting times ahead, bet you can’t wait! 😃 Yes, unfortunately C&RT are targeting continuous cruisers with a hike in licence fees, however it would still be more expensive to live in a marina, or have a home mooring. Marina fees vary considerably, with lots of factors determining rates such as electric hook up, water, post service etc, but are from £2000 up to £6000 per year. But cost aside, we chose this life to live on the water and travel the country, we only go into a marina if we were going to leave the boat for a night or two. We love being out on the cut as do many boaters and, in the winter months especially, cc’ers keep the network open, by using locks and travelling down the ‘not so used’ canals. The theory that cc’ers use more of the network and facilities is bonkers, we meander slowly, stopping at places for longer, as we don’t have a deadline and don’t have to be back to a marina, that’s all. We have a pump out loo, so use marinas for that, for which we have to pay for, so we don’t use the Elsan points either. We have some friends from the marina that we left in April ‘22, who were out on the cut for 6 months and did exactly the same route we did, covered the same miles, only they did it in 6 months and we did it in 12 months. We don’t think this will push people into marinas, it may force some cc’ers to have to give up this life altogether, as it becomes more and more unaffordable, and some they have lived this life for years and have nothing else, it’s very sad. It is also creating an awful divide in the boating community, moorers versus cc’ers, which is terrible, as the boating community is a lovely community where everyone looks out for each other, it’s like going back in time when people were nice to each other. Boaters look out for each other and it would be awful if this changed, it was one of the things that drew us to this life. C&RT have had their funding greatly reduced by the government, so we appreciate there needs to be a rise, but targeting a small section with such a huge rise in fees surely isn’t the answer, 25% is a quarter of the yearly fee, a huge additional amount for people to find, yet a 1%, or 2% rise across everyone would actually bring in 3-4 times the revenue, so the maths just don’t add up. Whatever they decide, we will continue to cc, it’ll be a bit harder, we’ll have to be a bit more frugal with our pennies, but this is our way of life now, we truly are ‘home’ living on the water! ….. crikey, I have waffled on a bit haven’t I, bet you wish you hadn’t asked lol 😂🫠 Speak soon, and hopefully we’ll meet up out on the cut one day soon! xx

    Hey guys, mind if I ask what you do while you're moored up for several days? I know there's the shopping and such but, I assume you don't shop every day so was just wondering what you do to pass the time on a typical day to keep from going stir crazy in such a small home.
    Oh, and at the @5:55 mark, was Martin sure that was a thumbs up.... 😂 Just kidding... lol
    Thanks.

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  9 місяців тому +1

      Hi Roger, thank you so much for watching and sending us your question, and lol re thumbs up 😜🤣
      When we’re moored up we generally do similar thing as you would do in a regular home, we do the usual housework chores, shopping, washing, cleaning, cooking etc and we relax the same too, such as TV, browsing the internet and social media etc. we also go for walks and see a bit of the area we’re in. It’s amazing some of the little places we’ve found that we never would have had we lived in a house and just passed through in a car. There’s always something to be done on a boat too, ie maintenance, and not just the usual engine checks and servicing, things like putting another shelf up, re-varnishing wood, rotating things in cupboards to make sure they stay free of condensation build up etc. I (Julie) often sit editing, it takes 2-3 days to complete one video, and Martin is often pottering around either outside the boat keeping the outside clean, paint touched up where needed and the roof free of leaves, or inside at the back in the engine bay as he loves nothing more than tinkering with the engine lol. We certainly couldn’t go stir crazy, there’s always something to do, but we can also sit, relax and do nothing too if we want. When we started this vlog, we kept it to our cruising journeys mostly, as we didn’t think people would want to see us going for walks and our general day to day activities, but we are slowly integrating some of this into the videos now, as we can see that people are interested in what we do. Hope this helps and thanks again Roger! xx

      @@JulieandMartinonRIB Thanks Julie. Yeah, some folks are really nosey....you know, like asking questions about what you do day to day...lol. Seriously though, I'd bet it would make an interesting video, or at least part of one, of what you guys do day to day, kind of a behind the scenes thing. Thanks again Julie.

    Anything is better than listening to wind noise on a video (my pet hate) it just makes some vids unwatchable.. Why are you going back north instead of heading to London? Love the ant .

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  10 місяців тому

      Hi, lol I suppose there is that, wind noise is awful, but no ambient sound is like watching a silent movie and then my voice booming out lol 🤦‍♀️ We always intended to winter on the Leicester Line, but went as far down the GU as we could, we didn’t want to get stuck the wrong side of winter closures. We do intend to work around London and the river Thames, but will do that another year from Spring onwards. We’re hoping to go far north for next year 2024, then perhaps the Thames for 2025. Thank you so much for your comment xx
