Casio has refreshed their lineup of watches with a new version of their classic calculator watch. This new model, the CA-53WF, features all the functionality from the original including dual time, a stopwatch, a daily alarm with hourly chime, automatic calendar, 12/24 timekeeping, 5 year battery, and of course an 8-digit calculator function with constants and power calculations.
But the defining feature of this new lineup, the negative display, is a total let down and almost makes this watch unusable unless you're in the perfect reflective angle of sunlight. Does it make this watch completely useless? Let's check it out and get the final verdict!

My parents got me the CA-53W model for my birthday and I absolutely love it. It was designed to be like this so no complaints
I used to own of these a child. It was my favorite watch. Made me feel cool. Probably why I still love watches to this day. It’s how they make you feel.
I always wanted one of these watches as a kid. I thought they were the coolest thing ever, but we could not afford it or my parents did not trust me with a watch, not sure lol but like you this is the watch that has me now obsessed with watches ... I guess Im making up for lost time.
Agreed. Fashion accessory. When they produce a watch that actually appeals to watch enthusiasts it's completely random and unintended. That goes for the entire industry.

I completely agree on the disappointment of the lack of backlight and a negative display. It was so bad that I had to cut out the factory polarizing film over the display, and reinsert a new film in a different orientation to get the normal non negative display. It's a little better now, but still wish they had back light.
Some have said that I ruined the look, but I guess I can always turn it back if I change my mind.
I totally love the negative display! It blends so good with your overall design (especially in white). I don't know who cares about the time, with fashion peace like this.

didn't even knew these existed until my mom found them on amazon when i asked her to get me a new CA-53 after the one i got three years ago decided to not have working buttons anymore. They looked cool, but without a backlight (which i'm still wondering when they'll ever make one with a backlight), it's going to make the already hard to read watch even harder to read. Maybe if another three years pass, I'll get the white one, or maybe the red one, but for now, I'll just stick with the iconic and classic design
Seriously man. I LOVE the green calc watch. I own the original Marty McFly edition already, but wanted that green bad boy. But within 1 hr of wearing it on an overcast day and figuring out that I could not read it 3 of 4 times I looked, I decided it was going back to walmart with a heavy heart. I mean, I couldn't even read it in the middle of the afternoon while driving. And I just don't have the patience atm to take it apart, order polarized film and reverse the display myself. And with the money I get back from the return I can buy the dbc611 I have had my eyes on for awhile.
I've been wanting this watch to use during my big food shop 🤣 I get fed up carrying my phone to use as a calculator and thought it would be better than carrying around an actual calculator

@@WatchingCasio yeah, I couldn't read it foe shi*. It had to be directly in the light to be readable. I aslso have a w800 with the negative display and I can almost always read that one just fine, and when I can't it at least has lume. Kinda sucks because I love the green color. I nearly kept it just to put the green bands on my original resin calc watch.
Just swap internals with a regular and bingo.
This colour way is impossibly cool imo.
I have the original 53w , love it to bits but the band snaped (allready replaced it) and i cant read it in the dark , but i still love it
Got this watch a while ago.. you're right about the display , it's really hard to read . Pity as it looks pretty cool.
I swapped out the negative display with a positive one from an old black watch with a busted band. Took 5 minutes and didn't have to remove the battery. Do it. Worth it if you have a sand watch.

Love this watch, but agreed, the negative display although looking good is very difficult to read. I would go for the original, actually I did in the 80s but would love another. If it had better water resistance and a count down timer (oh and a back light ffs) I would have bought one by now. As such I'm a sucker for Casio's.....give me a couple of weeks!

I just got mine yesterday, everything is fine with it except the price (42dollars on Amazon) and the biggest reason is no backlight
Majority of the people i know hates negative display, Its never practical. And I also agree with you on the stainless steel releases, such a missed opportunity.. Only if they had kept it simple.
Hope they release this one with the normal display, it ll be a hit.
The gshock gd350 is actually pretty good for a negative display.
Im good with my black normal display ca 53. Not wearing it much nowadays, lume has become an important thing when you work mostly after dark.

the negative display looks really cool however, my 57 year old eyes simply cannot read the time! I´ typing this with my mint all metal 1989 Tri Graph. The display is large. I can read it even without my glasses and the case feels really great quality and there is something about knowing its made in Japan that gives me more confidence in the watch. My version is the gold and steel case with blue dial. I think it looks fantastic on the tan leather strap I have on it! I don´t see too many Casio´s these days with such clear displays.
I have the AE-20W (588). Do you know how to reset it after changing the battery? There's no difference in how it look now than with a dead battery. Thanks
I have the blue one from several months. Visibility is not that bad. Advantage is that no one else can see the time from my wrist - it is a black hole entertainment!

i have mine where i applied lume on the down side of the crystal so when it glows it illuminates the display
@@monkelover2056 Hey, can you tell something more about this? I was thinking today about dissasembling the watch and then applying plain luminescent tape from store on the edges of the screen, under the 'glass'. Could you send me some photos of your Casio?
@@km1549 I would probably use luminescent tape... but the lume was too thick and shattered the lcd

well, what should I say. I got this few days ago. I got back to 80s immediately as a teenager I had it. Well it is nice exactly what I wanted, lot of memories from the school time, but I can't read it! I made a mistake with this stuff.

At least the lug points have holes all the way through so there's no fishing for the lug in between the strap and the case.

Even with the backlight on the gold or silver stainless steel calc watches they sell, the backlight is dim and only partially lights up the display. When they gonna learn????

How is the visibility with the negative display?
I tried to mod my ca-53w to add luminescent layer behind the LCD but ended up breaking it. Has anyone else tried this, if so, have they had any luck?
Huh, very interesting. Is it a lume layer? Or electroluminescent?
Watching Casio lume layer, after I replaced the reflective layer with the lume the LCD was very dim and only visible from certain angles. I would prefer to add an electroluminescent layer, but I have no idea how I would fit anything in there.
@@legendarysideburns2213 pretty cool that you're experimenting. I tried to add some tritium tubes in an old F91W but wasn't able to fit then in the case correctly. I wonder if this case is bigger hmm.

I have the watch and there is no light mentioned in the manual. Pressing the 1 and 9 does not seem to trigger a light either.

Casio seems to be way over top heavy with their negative display line up with positive display hardly getting a look in.
Personally I like to tell the time which is why I like to see it.
If Casio likes to revisit their back catalogue at least do it right and give us the option of a positive display which I reckon would out sell the negative version.

Data bank and calculator watches are very different. But I agree with you, it's a useless watch without a backlight. Btw, what are those two all black watches in the background? One I can tell is the F-91W but what model is the other one next to it? Pretty cool catalogue from the 80s containing way more great watches than the CA-53W.

And thanks for the note on Data Bank. I could have sworn I read some Casio literature somewhere that said the calc watches were part of the Data Bank lineup.
@@WatchingCasio some Data Bank watches have functions in addition to calculator watches. Some models don't even have that like the DBA-800 shown in the catalogue.

Yes definitely. You can peel off the film on the LCD and replace it with a new, rotated film. Not a bad idea!

I would never buy a Casio negative display watch. It would drive me nuts not being able to read it.

People hating on this watch is the same as complaining a summer day being too hot. Dont like it? --Dont buy it. I am pretty much getting them all as I do not have a sight problem & can clearly see the display. I dont need a light since I am not outdoors very often.
