Ever since the US Air merger/takeover of American, it’s become an entirely different airline. They needed to use the American Airlines branding to escape from the reputation they had. Things were very, very different when Bob Crandall was running American. That’s at least 30 years ago.
@@N464AT this isn't AMR anymore, that died when the America West/US Airways take over was done. Its now called the American 'Airlines Group. This management was supposed to make this new merged company better according to what they promised the unions who they wanted to have their support for the take over to occur. When i used to work for American back in the 00s the service was not perfect, yes there were a few indifferent employees amongst the good ones but I do remember the onboard service being better than what I saw in this trip report and this clearly shows that management at that company has gotten worse and not better as they promised when the merger happened.
Yep US Air merger tanked American. Any merger results in the poorer company changing the culture of the better company. Another example was United and Continental. Continental was great!
Can confirm. As someone who used (had) to fly US quite about out of DCA and CLT, I saw the sour attitude spread across AA post merger. How they've been able to survive this long with their attitude is a feat. I fly UA and B6 now if possible. Both Polaris and Mint have had much, much better soft product. With exception of one FA on UA IAD-LHR.
I flew first class on AA PHL-DFW and the FAs and service were perfection. I got a handwritten postcard from a FA at the end of the flight, thanking me for being a customer - have never had that happen before! Must be the DFW effect.
I agree. I fly almost every week, and have many miles on the 3 major airlines here in the U.S. I’ve been burned by all 3 of them, with many stories to tell. I’ve also had great service from all 3. I have most of my miles with American, and have been treated very well by the staff. I think it’s unfair to judge any airline by a couple staff members, really bad weather, or the food they give you. At the end of the day, I want to get to my destination safely and as comfortably as possible.
I am based in Charlotte so American is my default for most travel. American's operations infrastructure is usually good...meaning on time flights, quick and easy to fix issues, good boarding cadence once you are experienced. It makes it predictable and easy for frequent domestic business travel. The service product is awful. Like reaaaaally awful.
That’s the issue right there. The American staff act like it’s beneath them to even speak with you. There service is always terrible now. Look, domestic US flying is a bus in the air business now. No carrier is great. The difference with AA is, if i fly with them i’m guaranteed to be pissed off when i leave the plane.
Now unfortunately to AA most international flights are not business trips unlike domestic so people don’t really give a shit to being on time (obviously not hours of delays but 30 minutes or an hour is perfectly acceptable). On the other hand catering is one of if not the most important part of these fligths.
I live in Charlotte and AA handles over 90% of the flights here with many non-stop routes. AA is the only one with non-stops to LHR and the airfare reflects their monopoly. Why should they provide superior service if they hold such a large share? I have flown to ORD, BWI, JFK, or MIA so that I can fly British Airways and get so much better service and food. The contentious labor dispute between Flight Attendants and AA could be the cause of service erosion and indifference to customers. Honestly, they’ve become a flying credit card company. Take an application from a FA and you’ll see him/her smile and light-up.
They obviously don't have a "Sam Chui" policy haha. I.e. when a known flight reviewer is on board make sure they get the best service. Though some have a "Josh Cahill" policy where if Josh is spotted on a flight immediately kick him off the flight and threaten legal action against him.
@@NonstopDan it's so difficult trying to explain how this attitude can be endearing and infuriating at the same time. New Yorkers will walk past an armed robbery but will help you pick up your groceries after your bag rips. Weird place
The main advantage of US airlines (or United at least, being the only one I have experience with) is their apps and constant updates & communication about flight status. After a flight cancellation nightmare that resulted in two almost-missed connections and lost luggage with SQ of all airlines, I've flipped my priorities around to being OK with so-so soft product and even hard product so long as the ground experience is top notch. United absolutely babies you with text and app updates every 30 minutes about where your plane is, when boarding starts, gates changes, etc etc, which is the best when you're exhausted and discombobulated from 20+ hours of long haul travel
Yeah, I agree. United does an excellent job of keeping you updated on gates, time changes, etc...but what is even nicer is the peace of mind being able to know where your luggage is. I really like these characteristics about United.
sorry, but I expect more from an airline for 10 000 $, and have never not made a connection for lack of information. Travel is sh..t these days, it is that simple.
The worst part is their "customer service". AA will routinely lie to passengers about delays, cancellations, etc and when caught, refuse to even apologize. All we expect is that you be honest when you're giving bad news, stop trying to pass the blame.
AA, since the merger with US, changed their model to a low frills/quasi-budget model airline. Because of that, they shouldn't be charging luxury level prices. All they care about is maximizing profits, pleasing their shareholders, and eliminating features to generate more revenue; the customer comes last. That merger should have NEVER went through
We recently flew AA business class from London to LA and had similar viewpoints. I was in row 2 thinking I would get to select lunch options early on. Unfortunately they started at the rear of 2nd so ran out of my 1st choice. The flight attendants could not be found again once meal was over. No 2nd glass of wine for me. Additionally, even though we were flying during daytime they told everyone to close their windows, shut off the lights and basically seemed to expect we’d all sleep the 11 hours returning to LA. We will not go back….other US and Euro airlines do a much better job. The lack of service was appalling.
On AA, meal selection starts in the back on odd number flights, front on even number flights. At least that's the way it used to be. 2.5 million miles (in a seat!) on AA here. Lifetime Platinum. The US Airways merger diluted my status substantially. I fly only for pleasure now and had the best ever Biz Class flight on a 787 from Rome to DFW last year. I usually get some decent service on AA, but I agree it can be spotty.
Hold on, you got threats from AA flight attendants because you complained about the deadheading crew members being serve first? WTF? This is another level of bad hospitality.
I have found that the New York and Philly based American Airlines crews, in particular, are the worst at customer service. They are very standoffish and can be shouty with passengers with no provocation. Not good.
Add Miami (American), Atlanta (Delta) and Houston (United) to that worst list. Seattle (Alaska and Delta both) is also pretty lousy anymore. Miserable crews usually. By contrast, Delta crews from California and the Midwest are still good usually.
We flew American yesterday from Barcelona to Miami Business Class…you’re right about the boarding of Priority 1-4…makes no sense….in one line. Then the announce that Group 1 could board first…..so you had to push through all the people. The food was not great and we were rushed the entire time on a 9 hour flight……
I usually board as late as possible especially when I have checked bags in Europe…. Once so late BA missed their slot and it cost them $$$$ - my little get back to them!
To the AA SVP who said food doesn't matter, people just want to be one time...I have a revolutionary suggestion...how about be on time with great food? I'm confident one of the world's largest airlines can achieve it, considering all the Asian airlines do it really well.
I recently flew AA in Premium Economy from CDG to JFK on a 777.200. Just two rows. The meal choice ran out at row 1. No apologies... u get pasta. We did have more legroom. The very seasoned JFK based f/a, when I sympathized with her over their product, went in to a trade. "I have been flying for 35 years and I can't hold Rome' . This means there are even more senior AA f/a's who can bid for and fly to Rome. Lesson is, unless u like f/a's who have been flying more that 35 years and hate their job, then don't fly transatlantic on AA to Europe. It was horrific and just a union based product. This woman had NO clue. I went back on AF and what a pleasant experience. Similarly mature f/a's but they delivered 100% . The AA gang just need to be pentioned off as they do the carrier absolutely no good.
To sum things up, paying a big price for business class on a US carrier isn't worth it if you get a free upgrade take it but if you don't just stick with economy or fly another airline.
Completly agree! The ONLY US airline “first class” product that I feel is worth the price (or even service in general), is JetBlue Mint. Not only is levels ahead of all other US carriers combined, but also a fraction of the cost as well. I do occasionally like Delta as well, but they barely make the cut. US airlines in general seriously lack even a decent product and are way behind in comparison to other world airlines.
@@StallionFX1 makes me wish the glory days of aviation would come back when we had a wider choice of airlines and some of them actually made your flight a fun and enjoyable experience.

Depends if Dan was blocking other paxs from boarding before his group was called. He could have been asked more politely to move, or Dan wanted the reaction for his video so he knew where to stand to get it.
Right there is the answer as to why American Airlines isn't anywhere near the standard of Singapore, Emirates, Qatar or Qantas, etc, etc. When the airline staff believe they are there to be served not paying customers, it illustrates the culture that no doubt controls the company.
Yeah, AA is slacking if they missed Sam Chui on a flight. Most airlines have a "Sam Chui" policy where if he (or several other well known flight reviewers like Dan) are spotted on a flight they are to get the absolute best service. And the reverse is true if Josh Cahill is spotted on a flight, carriers that haven't banned him yet have policies to kick him off the flight if spotted.
@@mrvwbug4423 This is why watching his reviews is pointless. They see him board and they kiss his rear end. It's not authentic. Apparently AA didn't though. Interesting.
I flown AA business class from New York to London on the B777-300 and I can say that my flight was great! The food was good and the cabin crew was amazing. Is a shame that this doesn’t happen on all flights.
As an Atlantan, I'm a Delta fan and hope their product exceeds expectations but as an American, I'm rather ashamed that we can't seem to offer world class service from an airline named 'American.' Part of the problem is, I think, the fact that profit trumps all other considerations in our country.
The AA crew on a flight to Paris laughed as they put the noise cancelling headphones in their bags and stole them. They also put a whole bunch of mini champagne bottles in their bags. Honestly they just hire anyone
I highly doubt they got champagne, AFAIK AA doesn't serve proper champagne on their flights, just cheap sparkling things. Though knowing who they hire, they would still believe it is champagne.
Ironically, I just finished watching an old commercial from the 70's where they sing the jingle, "we're American Airlines, doing what we do best". They're the best at doing the worst .
@redademe Most Americans think all sparkling wines are champagne, and the USDA allows domestic sparkling wine to be labeled "champagne," if produced using Methode Champenois. Frankly, I'm satisfied with Korbel Brut. It's not like American is serving Cook's which is a horrible sparking wine from New York State.
And that's before the reverse merger where America West assumed AAs identity like they did with US Air. Remember AA as we currently know it is actually America West.
American is competing with United for the worst food award. Had a friend bring a "small pantry" with him on an AA business class flight knowing how disappointing the food would be.
You are so right, Dan. AA's soft product is HIDEOUS. I was flying down to DCA a couple weeks ago, from SYR, to visit my sister and vacation on Chincoteague Island.(so beautiful! You and Oskar should go there) The only reason I flew American was the had a nonstop flight from SYR- DCA. I flew down on an RJ900 in domestic first class. The flight attendants were incredibly rude and you only got a cup of soda, with no snacks, The flight attendants served ECONOMY first!!!(that was wicked rude!) Contrast this with my Delta flight from ORF back to SYR, with a layover at LGA. Again, I flew domestic first class. The flight attendants were super nice. They let you have as much as you wanted to drink; they also had pre departure beverages, which American most decidedly did NOT. Delta also gave us the premium snacks, and we could have as many as we wanted. I flew an E175 from ORF to LGA, then an RJ900 from LGA to SYR. Even though I had to connect(there are no nonstop flights from ORF-SYR) it was a way better flight on Delta than American. I wish I didn't have to fly AA at all but they are the only ones that have nonstop service to National. It really sucks!
1000000% agree the Collins seats are SO much better. My main complaint on the Safran is the laughably bad storage. There isn't even space for the things they give you for the flight.
Fly American Airlines Flagship First Class on a 777-300ER from Los Angeles to Sydney. It is top notch, "A Number One". The food, the accommodations, the comfort is second to none.
I’m captive to AA in the PHL market for European flights. AA can be mediocre on food, but it is usually a lot better than your JFK to LHR service. As you noted, wine selection is very good. If they actually roll out espresso, I’ll be sold. I’d say westbound food on AA out of Europe is better because catering standards are higher there for a given price point. Philly has great food, but at PHL itself, the demand for quality isn’t there from AA. My recommendation unrelated to AA is never to eat over the overnight flight; it only delays the adjustment process. I find FAs to be generally of high quality out of PHL in business class. Check-in in PHL for business class can seem harried, and the Admiral lounge is out of date. In LHR and ZUR, two recent airports I flew out of on AA, it is exactly the opposite. And no, I couldn’t imagine a PHL based crew serving crew ahead of clients.
BIg D - you’re so right. The day soft product became most important to me, my days of being a stubborn AApologist ended. Really disappointing. Best to you and Big O.
Please continue to shine a light on all U.S. carriers with the hopes that your videos and others along with the comments will change things for the better!
I once flew American between Tokyo and LA, and remember two things: the captain telling us that the cabin crew were there 'prim-ar-il-y for your safety' and the cabin crew actually spent most of their time in the galley, playing cards. This review doesn't surprise me.
As an airline employee, I totally agree with your criticism. One of the biggest problems is management. With the many mergers throughout the years, and with US Airways management running the new airline, their is no clear identity to what the airline is. Is it a low budget? Or is ot premium?.. different cultures, norms and standards. Until they resolve this, it will continue to be a disaster.
I flew AA for the first time on the way back from Chicago to Manchester. Easily the worst long haul service I've ever had. FAs were disinterested and unfriendly, food was passable at best (I'd flown Aer Lingus out and they were great in all areas), and generally just a bit crap all round. But hey, they got me home in one piece so that's what counts I guess.
Have to say, I flew AA Business just last week on the 777-300ER MIA-LHR and I couldn’t complain… hard and soft products all great and the crew were absolutely fantastic!
Dessert on AA business class looks so sick man, I mean vistara airlines in India serve cheesecakes for dessert in economy class to all its passengers and that too on a domestic flight.
I flew AA once in short haul First Class. The crew had us pass around a Snack Basket (like from one passenger to another and back to the front where she picked it up). First Class had no Biscoff in the basket so I went and got some from Coach and the First class flight attendant started lecturing me that I shouldn't be moving between cabins and 'stealing' snacks from coach.
The best thing about AA, is they are the biggest airline in the world, and go literally everywhere; more importantly, the Advantage FF program is far more generous than United, and especially Delta.
@@nazlannazarudin5090actually google says the opposite. Not "Many airlines" fly to more destinations than AA, since United is the only one that flies to more destinations than AA.

This was so comical! Well done!! Unfortunately I fly AA as it is my hub but when I use points to fly business for the first time I'll most likely be flying another airline
At this point AA only engages in two lines of business: 1. running flights on monopoly routes where they're able to overcharge their customers that are actually paying for their flights with cash 2. Selling miles to credit card companies that end up only being usable used on flights where they have to compete with other airlines anyway In either of these cases, customer experience does not matter one bit because they realize that they're either the only direct flight available or they've already made their money from the credit card company on the back end at which point it doesn't matter how late or crappy their customer experience is

I like AA's later transatlantic departure times going east (even on the day-tripper from JFK apparently!) but they're just too mean. I'll stick to BA across the pond, and thank god Alaska have joined oneworld for US internal
Alaska is probably worse for it, their service has deteriorated since joining One World. My biggest Alaska pet peeve is having the damn cleaning crew on the plane before the passengers are off, it's like I don't want to dodge a cleaning person while I'm trying to get my carry on and get off the plane.
Dan, listen; if you want to bash an airline, fine. The people who work there, fair game. But if you attack my precious cranberry juice in a can, there's gonna be words had, sir
😅😅😂😂
I couldn’t BELIEVE the grams of sugar in that! That’s almost double what’s in a can of Coke, yikes!

Diabetes in a can. 😅
juice? you mean syrup?
I've never been on an AA flight. I hope to continue this for the rest of my life.
They used to be good years ago, before the merger with US
Wait a minute. You paid for a premium ticket and AA wanted another $29 for Wifi? Spirit Airlines would be proud of the grift!
Yes, even passengers in premium cabins pay for WiFi on AA
Nah, even Spirit airline would be APPALLED at that grift...
@@rawrberrys Spirit now has complimentary wifi with their premium economy ("go big") tickets. (Can't really call it business class but with 2x2 seating, it's pretty good for premium economy)
What is it about bad service here? Ground crew barking at PAYING PREMIUM PASSENGERS, cabin crew ignoring the calls from PAYING PREMIUM PASSENGERS, and then the guy even "challenged" a PAYING PREMIUM PASSENGER for the broken headphone, as if he doesn't know what he's talking about
AA ground agents, at both check in and gates, can easily be amongst the worst I've experienced. Lounge staff though seem to get it right.
I applaud you for blurring out people in business class and giving them the privacy they paid for 👏 🙌
Most recently, I've been called a "puta" by an AA agent over the phone, in addition to being told "ok, and what do you expect me to do about it?" after informing an FA about the fact that I'd ordered a special meal that wasn't loaded. AA is the pits.
Ever since the US Air merger/takeover of American, it’s become an entirely different airline. They needed to use the American Airlines branding to escape from the reputation they had. Things were very, very different when Bob Crandall was running American. That’s at least 30 years ago.
AMR has been treating their employees like shit for decades and it’s become their culture to treat their customers with such indifference.
The Leonardo Di Caprio reference 😂
I squeaked. It was great!
There's a massive contrast between the FA crews based out of JFK and DFW. Flew J class LHR-DFW on the 773ER, the FA's were all warm and friendly
@@Mark_McCAlaska is pretty good idk
I love that they gave zero fucks that they're clearly being reviewed.
True New Yorkers😭😂
They obviously don't have a "Sam Chui" policy haha. I.e. when a known flight reviewer is on board make sure they get the best service. Though some have a "Josh Cahill" policy where if Josh is spotted on a flight immediately kick him off the flight and threaten legal action against him.
@@NonstopDanAll I can say is F New York.
@@NonstopDan Lol. Clown.
You can get that on other airlines, AF or KLM for example
@@nico_pendisagree AF app is awful.
American Airlines is a bus line in the sky, not a "luxury" product....
Couldn't agree more
Then they shouldn’t charge luxury prices on their products
AA, since the merger with US, changed their model to a low frills/quasi-budget model airline. Because of that, they shouldn't be charging luxury level prices. All they care about is maximizing profits, pleasing their shareholders, and eliminating features to generate more revenue; the customer comes last. That merger should have NEVER went through
Actually, they are the largest Commuter Airline in the world. The number of seats on the plane is irrelevant.
Sometimes it's an actual bus!
Not good.
100% agree
As Crew myself we are very strictly told full fare passengers must be offered a choice first then staff
Told that but who actually controls it? The staff
This makes BA club world look good and that’s an achievement. So well done AA !
The worst thing about AA domestically is right after you get to cruise altitude, they come on the PA and start dumping their credit card spill on you.

Right there is the answer as to why American Airlines isn't anywhere near the standard of Singapore, Emirates, Qatar or Qantas, etc, etc. When the airline staff believe they are there to be served not paying customers, it illustrates the culture that no doubt controls the company.

GAGGING! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Sam Chui’s review of a couple of weeks ago he had the same experience as you: terrible service!
$10,000 and you have to pay for WI-FI, WTF??
@@redademe they do serve champagne on some international flights but nothing memorable. On Domestic flight just prosecco.
Yeah they do. For instance when they hired my ex-gf, the biggest cheater in the business.
Went to heck in 1998, spiraled into bankruptsy, ruined TWA, and never recovered.
And that's before the reverse merger where America West assumed AAs identity like they did with US Air. Remember AA as we currently know it is actually America West.
After 12 years, first time I haven't had AA status. Switched to Delta out of PHX.
In the 80s and 90s I flew very regularly TA with AA in business class. Boy, do they seem to have deteriorated!
The use of that “everyone is so creative” clip was perfection. 😂
American is competing with United for the worst food award. Had a friend bring a "small pantry" with him on an AA business class flight knowing how disappointing the food would be.
I now do this every time after a long domestic flight with nothing but "golden chicken" on the menu 🤢

The Leo bit was CRAZY 😂😂😂😂

Not surprised. If I go to Asia or the Middle East I always pick those area airlines instead of any airline in the states.
Hahaha oh my god! Dan I loved all the sarcastic jokes in this one haha! Keep them coming
Great honest review, Daniel. I’d be so disappointed with an experience like that in business class.
Business class on AA is an extremely mediocre product. In the few remaining flights offering First, service is shameful.
It’s run by Americans. What do you expect? It’s like Peasant Airlines lol

Absolutely horrifying experience for ANY business class product. If this was in any other continent they’d be bankrupt in a few days.

This was so comical! Well done!! Unfortunately I fly AA as it is my hub but when I use points to fly business for the first time I'll most likely be flying another airline
At this point AA only engages in two lines of business:
1. running flights on monopoly routes where they're able to overcharge their customers that are actually paying for their flights with cash
2. Selling miles to credit card companies that end up only being usable used on flights where they have to compete with other airlines anyway
In either of these cases, customer experience does not matter one bit because they realize that they're either the only direct flight available or they've already made their money from the credit card company on the back end at which point it doesn't matter how late or crappy their customer experience is
