Thanks so much for doing this and expanding the community. I've been a proud MiSTer owner for over 4 years now. I had watched the project grow since about 2017 and when the pandemic hit I was finally able to build a MiSTer stack, and before the DE10-nano prices really skyrocketed. The project has only gotten more amazing over time, and it is number one in devices I've bought that just keep on giving. Personally I'm looking forward to your upcoming systems, as I'd love to have one MiSTer paired with a CRT just for computer cores, and a more consolized version in my game room with the TVs. (Truth be told: A portable with dock with HDMI and VGA would be THE device for me).
I'm pretty much the exact target user. Old school gamer, all about early arcade/console generations. I play a lot of shmups and everyone who does knows accuracy is super important and very difficult with traditional emulation in order to capture very sensitive conditions like slowdown. And of course latency is huge. But I held off for years mainly due to the price issues. I dipped back in now that I got a CRT and everyone told me to just get a MiSTer Pi as a no-brainer. Though it appeared it was selling out very fast. I managed to swoop in at just the right time to get one from the 2nd batch. It's clear this is going to be the default and will open up to a much broader market. I love whenever someone can figure out inefficiencies and solve a glaring market problem. Very grateful and eagerly anticipating my MiSTer Pi. Well done!
@GeminiNight Plugged in an amplifier in the same area which used the same sized AC connection but very different current. Moved the amp, not the cable, and one day the wrong AC cable was plugged in. USB hub had a capacitor spark up, the current damaged DE10 on the way through, although it does have some signs of life. Very sad, wasteful and expensive lesson
I've been wanting a mister for several years now, but couldn't stomach paying $400+. Thank you for your hard work, I hope it gives you great success!!! I managed to place an order for the 2nd batch, not sure when it ships but I'm excited
Not sure if I should cry or not that I just built a Nano MiSTer fully loaded. I knew about your setup with the MiSTer Pi but I was impatient. That impatience led me to spending well over $400. I almost bought the whole setup on your pre-order two days ago just to have it lol. I am not sure why I felt I needed it. Almost like mental reverse psychology lmao. This was a great video btw. I never knew all the differences until now. I get it. Well done!
FYI: a SNES SNAC adapter along with a SNAC level shifter are exclusive to the 2nd batch, which has already sold out. The 3rd batch (available for preorder) has a NFC reader and four NFC cards as its exlusives.
The fact that you used pokemon CC as the example is about the main reason I would want this. I do want a console that I can take my CC file to the big screen thank you for giving me another option.
I am so hyped into this. I went back and forth for a few years now but seeing the Price of the DE10 Nano or All In One Packs sold here i never give it a try. Now with your offer it was a no brainer for me. Cant wait to hold this in my hands. =)
From what I understand Robert's PS1, N64, and GBA FPGA cores are not exactly "cycle accurate" because of issues with the RAM somehow, but they are still much more accurate than basically any software emulator out there.
Yes, because of Mister hardware limitations, mostly RAM latency if I understand correctly. I have used both the N64 core side to side with my real PAL N64. They are identical in feel with the only noticeable difference being that the N64 core had slightly less and shorter duration slowdowns in busy sections.
GBA is something he wants to go back and rewrite one day, it isn't related to the RAM. It is cycle accurate, but cycle accurate =/= 100% accuracy. Cycle accuracy is not the whole story for accuracy. The PS1 and N64 are not 1:1 either. Personally when talking about FPGA cores saying the words "cycle accurate" is less relevant than with software emulators where it is more difficult to achieve cycle accuracy.
Amazing. Good work, mate. I definitely will buy one of these to play PS1 games. Not now. I currently play on original HW so no urgency for me. Later, once everyone that need one urgently have one then I will buy one. I can wait, but I still greatly look forward to getting one in the future. Bravo. Simply incredible. I think this might completely transform the retro scene. I also expect it to be sold out super quickly and ... then we'll see if the Retro Make company can keep up with demand!
Don't know where we normal people can put a review of the mister pi, but i just wanted to say, I was in the batch 2 of the mister pi and I got the turbo pack. It's great. So far I am enjoying setting it up and playing some games and testing it. My minor complaint is that the acrylic case is a little tight and I couldn't just pop out the sd card. I had to take it apart. And once I took it apart it was really hard to get the case back together. I am leaving the sides off so that it's easy to take the sd card out.
Obligatory nerd out -- ACKSHUALLY ... the PS1 core is 98-99% cycle accurate. I don't know where Robert's original posts are (prob his Patreon which is inaccessible), but he did extensive testing of the CPU timings vs. original hardware for basically all (?) operations. On the flip side, some RAM access may be slower iirc and triangle drawing may be too fast... I believe there is a missed cycle counter in the core that balances out RAM slowness by speeding up other operations so that it is imperceptible, and the triangle drawing speed only impacts a handful of games that are not using framebuffer. And thank you for creating MiSTER Pi and growing the community!
Great video Taki! Just ordered the full kit batch 3! Been watching you for years and wish I’d checked out your second channel sooner as I just found out about your console from LTT. Can’t wait to be able to play arcade and console games perfectly, from a single unit. 2-3 months seems so far away at this point lol.
I'm not sure if I'll ever get a MisterPi, but do like knowing that if my DE-10 ever bites the dust i'll have a much more economical backup solution, so keep up the great work! One thing I'd like to see though, if it's even possible, would be a change in the overall form factor. I think a mini-itx style carrier board would be great, and shifting the FPGA onto a card like the raspberry pi computer modules would be pretty fantastic. I'd be curious to see how that might affect upgrading in the future to newer more capable FPGAs. Being able to buy a new module and just pop it on the carrier board would be pretty fantastic imho.
Wow, it’s been about 8 hours since I was lucky enough to get my preorder in. I’m glad I managed to because I completely forgot, and now it’s sold out. I guess there’s no turning back now, but I’m really looking forward to this new device!
I recently got a DE-10 setup but I'm really glad this exists at a lower price point for those playing on HDMI. I would definitely consider this for a second setup if it had a more comprehensive analog output board.
Hi @TakiUdon, how did you do that at 2:33? Are the controller and screen connected to the Mister via cable, is that some sort of lan streaming service?
Nicely done. I remember getting an import PS1 along with Tekken, bringing it with me to a shop to test out the TVs (needed SCART). I played the heck out of the Tekken series. I liked the Saturn too, and have a Japanese console somewhere just to play Baku Baku animal (great 2 player game) - I was disappointed that the light guns for Virtua Cop wouldn't work on LCD screens!
Very cool that you have it on a CRT! How did you connect it? External HDMI to SVideo/Component/Composite converter box? Does your TV have VGA? Or some other way?
I never had an FPGA board and the last time i played on PS1 and older consoles was 20 years ago, for people like me, it would be great id there are side by side comparison between hardware and software emulation so we can see the difference
I'd love to be proven wrong but I think any differences would be few and far between. Software emulators are building off of decades of iterative work at this point - Years of development, users playing each and every game and reporting back when something goes wrong with the emulation, competing projects copying each others notes, etc. The famous examples a lot of videos about FPGAs cite as the reason software emulators are some sort of problem are edge cases in SNES games that haven't been in any of the popular emulators for over a decade. I wouldn't expect many visually obvious differences on any of the famous PS1 games, but the PS1 had a _lot_ of games.
A lot of people will disagree with what I am about to type. This is just what I have discovered. I think FPGA is overhyped for some reasons and underhyped for others. I also think the same could be said of software emulation. Each has its use cases and what I would recommend mostly comes down to how well each would fit your lifestyle, and what you are trying to accomplish. If you are emulating on a sufficiently powerful machine with a mature emulator the only advantage really of FPGA is efficiency. But it destroys in that category and the small box makes for a great living room item. Running Software versus my original hardware with latency hacks and overclocking options I can make an emulator perform "better" than original hardware. Without all that, there is going be some added latency with input. I never could dial in the input of most emulators with original hardware. I either was a little behind or a little ahead. Weaker hardware will have emulators for them that are not as feature rich and may be less accurate. Have stutter, slowdown, sound pops/distortion, missing effects, etc. FPGAs are lower powered than even these weaker software emulator's machines and far more accurate at this level and often way more responsive. I think handheld/hybrid FPGAs are probably one of the best use cases.
Great work. Looking forward to hearing about the consumer version you've mentioned before in the future =) Didn't know about the DOS game support, that's pretty neat ^_^
I bought one, it arrived today (10 December). Even if I JUST use it as a DE10 Nano, to learn about FPGA, it was cheaper than buying the original dev kit. Cool !
I just pre-ordered the third batch. I noticed in the video where it was mentioned that a second RAM stick would help the Sega Saturn core, but where would that second stick fit? I would have ordered the second stick, but I didn't know if it fit on the board with all of the other add-ons.
Definitely awesome to see it actually working and in people's hands, and I'm excited to hopefully be getting into it someday. I'm personally waiting on the consolized versions, since I'll mainly be playing on a composite only CRT, direct composite out is pretty important to me. Though I still gotta decide on whether or not I'd get the more standard one or wait for the flagship, I guess it just depends on what the flagship offers. If it offers a NFC card slot for TapTo (or whatever it's called now) then I'll gladly go for it and make a ton of cards for it, cause that physical representation of games is pretty awesome, even if it technically isn't physical lol
Grats on the release, this looks amazing! Glad that you are making things so much more affordable for everyone. Question: I assume that all the coupons that you hid have been used already? (the ones I found said the limit had been reached 😥)
It should be stated. The de10 nano is a developer board. When Intel released it, they were supplementing the cost to make developing on it, affordable for developers. The de10 nano was specifically chosen by the mister programmers because of this. It was a match made in heaven.
It depends which games you are wanting. A lot of arcade games have been added but no mortal komba, killer instinct or street fighter iii series Using a pc , network connection and running groovy mister on this mister pi allows you to play the full name catalog without the lag and delays inherent with pc emulation
The FPGA craze started when I wanted to buy a DE10 board for educational purposes, just to find out it had gone up in price. Had to get the DE10-STD instead of the Nano because the price gap was narrow enough that I said I'd rather have the extra connections the STD offers, as buying them afterwards is both expensive and troublesome. I've never tried running MiSTER on my DE10, but I know a port for the DE10 exists. I always thought the Chinese would make profit off MiSTER (Aliexpress \ TaoBao etc), since there are tons of 3rd party boards with Cyclone chips floating around, but maybe these are olders Cyclones \ not of the SoC variety that comes with an ARM core, so who knows.
I need to start doing projects that don't take an entire year to finish 😅
Might be able to help with that.

Fantastic project, definitely going to buy a kit soon.
Me: "FPGA gaming is really interesting, but I'm fine with emulators. I don't need one."
Taki:
Me: "Goddammit."
just...download the filter ? 🤔
I’ve bought it right away!! can’t wait to receive it \0/
Great work. Looking forward to hearing about the consumer version you've mentioned before in the future =)
Didn't know about the DOS game support, that's pretty neat ^_^
I bought one, it arrived today (10 December). Even if I JUST use it as a DE10 Nano, to learn about FPGA, it was cheaper than buying the original dev kit. Cool !
Mine arrived a few days ago. I have much to learn now about how to use it!
Amazing, I was just talking about how great fpga would be once it becomes affordable. I'm holding out for handhelds though.
This actually looks really incredible!
Bought one! I can't wait. I hope one day you will be able to somehow create a MiSTER that has 4K output capability built in.
I believe there is an fpga project in development called the Replay 2
Grats on the release, this looks amazing! Glad that you are making things so much more affordable for everyone.
Question: I assume that all the coupons that you hid have been used already?
(the ones I found said the limit had been reached 😥)
yep all three that I found were used up
Got first banch MISTer PI - and I'm loving itl!
I'm looking forward to the delivery of my board here in Brazil.
This deserves much success 👍
It should be stated. The de10 nano is a developer board. When Intel released it, they were supplementing the cost to make developing on it, affordable for developers. The de10 nano was specifically chosen by the mister programmers because of this. It was a match made in heaven.
I already have one MiSTer, but when I get a second, it will be yours!
Thank you sir, you're so kind!
Do you have a link to the gb flash gameboy dumper your using?
Batch 3 already sold out? When or how can we queue up for next batch order?
Never probably, it's just a lie, I don't understand why do they make videos of products you will never be able to find in stock, specially FPGAs.
Hey taki are the oleds still going to ship out this month?
Will you have an install video ready to go for the full kit with hdmi mod ready by then?
Is it possible to run arcade games on this? I'd like to make a small cabinet to play various fighting games.
It depends which games you are wanting. A lot of arcade games have been added but no mortal komba, killer instinct or street fighter iii series
Using a pc , network connection and running groovy mister on this mister pi allows you to play the full name catalog without the lag and delays inherent with pc emulation
Is there an analogue out option to output to a crt?
When can we expect the switch lite oled screen if we placed an order on the pre order?
It depends on the SKU. The screens are already shipping.
@ sounds great I can’t wait to get mine
Nice! I got the ultimate bundle. Can't wait!
@@TakiUdonhow is the quality of the mega kit's eXtremeRate buttons? Are they as good or better than the official ones?
Any chance you guys are providing mister pi's with case cover pre-installed? 🍻
CPS3 is also kind of at the edge of what can be done, it might not be possible on the platform without some accuracy tradeoffs, if even that.
I hope someday a MiSTer successor comes out than can handle Naomi. That'd be the dream... 🍥
I really want one, but I’m waiting for the handheld
07:33 Why did you decide to change the ram modules from ISSI to the Micron ram modules?
How's Golden Sun doing on this? Usually emulation botchers the sounds during fights.
Looks awesome, can this do pc engine & pc engine cd?
It can. There is a core on MiSTer that can do both, it's labeled "Turbo Duo"
