    I'm a high performance race engine builder, so when I came across this 'from scratch build', I was intrigued. So I've watched each and every post about this project, thinking to myself, why didn't he do this...why didn't he do that? But, as this engineering task became more mature, I became more impressed. You've got a good handle on how things work and how, in conjunction, things should work. That's the difference between a good build/project and a great one. Its great to see this start from a idea and raw materials, to a petty sweet piece of function and art. Keep on keeping on! OK...that all being said.....please do a 4 stroke version. I know you can do it, and it would be great to see what you can come up with. 👍👍 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

    With your internal combustion engine and the mention of a MOSFET and coil, I thought you would have alot of fun with a Megasquirt or Microsquirt. These are automotive ECUs you can assemble your self, tune, log, and monitor sensors on an engine. This is right up your alley....

    My wife can never understand why I buy large amounts of cool little tid bits and start working on like 3 projects at a time. She see's it as all junk until it is in a working form. I see the potential of certain parts albeit from a computer, car, gun or anything else. Right now I am working on a gun myself while working to mod a L36 to sport a supercharger and just finishing up my 2 stroke engine project to use to power something (haven't decided yet)
    It is good to see other people are like me in that sense because I was starting to feel like a hoarder.

    dude! you where right about the extension tubes, i need to get my hands on one of those! much cheaper solution to a macro lens. great to see another vid, loving the look of that engine, some fine work you do, its like a piece of art. Keep it up man!

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  8 років тому

      +Corbonzo Yeah the extension tubes work really well! I can even get closer shots but for video it's inconvenient. The way to get closer shots is by zooming in the telephoto lens all the way but the draw back is you have to be about 4 feet away from the subject to be in focus. It's kinda odd really. But they are pretty nice and cheap. They also do not effect the quality of the image at all unlike those magnifier filters things. These are the ones I bought: smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BXZ9ALQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 They are all plastic but a pretty good quality plastic. Thank you! Will do!

    • @spidermann5000
      @spidermann5000 8 років тому +1

      +Makerj101 You could also use something like the Hama Nah Close-up. You just screw it on your lens like an ordinary filter and it allows you to focus really close. It does not change the focal leght but instead the minimal focus distance.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  8 років тому

      +spidermann5000 How does it make it minimum focal length smaller? How much will it decrease the minimum focal length? Thank you!

    • @spidermann5000
      @spidermann5000 8 років тому

      Its like if you put a magnifying glass in front of the lens, its really simple. A teleconverter does deliver better IQ tho but I think for the kind of video you are doing it would be al right + you would not neet to film from one corner to the other.

  • @rkirke1
    @rkirke1 8 років тому

    Nice work on the engine! I've been following the build from part 1. Well impressed that even the water pump was made entirely from scratch :O
    If you've still got access to a lathe, have you thought about casting and machining an aluminium piston for it? You might be able to improve compression by having more than one piston ring groove, like in commercial engines and maybe use lead, tin or another soft metal to form the rings..?
    Also, I've built a few ignition driver circuits before and while I've made MOSFETs work, they die incredibly easily if they see HV transients on any of the pins.. I found darlington NPN transistors to be almost indestructible during testing (MJ10012, using a second transistor to drive it with a logic level signal from an arduino). The coils I tried needed a fairly fixed 1-2mS pulse IIRC, too short and the spark is weak, too long and the coil saturates and draws excessive current.
    Finally, those HP LED modules are awesome! They look like they might be some of the first commercial LED matrix modules, what with the ceramic bases, gold plated and so on, no expense spared! Might be worth messaging Fran Blanche (of the same UA-cam channel name) and asking about them - a fair few of her videos are on extreme cool vintage electronics, and might she might be able to shed some light on them or point you in the right direction?

    Hey, you featured your tektronix tm504 in an earlier video about 5 months ago. I was wondering how you like it/how it's holding up. I need some equipment, and the tm504 seems like a reliable and relatively cheap option. I don't really have to money to get all new equipment.
    ICE looks great, very impressive. Makes me want to build one! Merry Christmas.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  8 років тому +1

      +Henry Love I love it! I mostly use the power supply. I almost always have the volt meter in parallel with the power supply. I use the signal generator a lot too. The signal generator has a really nice out put so you don't need any amplification to run small speaker and such. I have not done much with the pulse generator yet. I highly recommend it. Make sure you get one that has one of the good variable power supplies that can supply 1.5 amps. I believe there is also a power supply model that will only do 500ma. Be warned though, the thing is HUGE. This would also not be the biggest bang for your buck if you are looking for just a power supply and volt meter. If what you need is a power supply and a volt meter, your basic cheapo meter will probably do more than this meter and one of these power supplies can probably do more amps and is possibly cheaper: smile.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_14?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=variable+power+supply&sprefix=variable+power+supply%2Caps%2C241
      If your looking for signal generator you might be better off getting a signal gen like this: smile.amazon.com/Sinometer-Function-Generator-stability-accuracy/dp/B000JD0BVG/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1451222707&sr=8-11&keywords=signal+generator
      The modules are fairly expensive for this unit as are most old Tektronix equipment. They will run you about $70 a module on eBay if you get a good deal. I was looking to buy another power supply module and volt meter for mine but I didn't want to pay that much. Could get a decent auto ranging meter for a similar price and it's a ton more portable.

      Makerj101 Just a question, with what circuit do I control a universal motor? (Vacuum cleaner)
      I need to control the speeds for a lathe.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  8 років тому

      +Joep Stuyfzand You're going to need to change the voltage. Frequency does not matter for a universal motor. They will even work great on DC. So there are tons of ways you can very the speed. You could rectify mains and then use PWM, you could use a variac... I'd say the cheapest thing would be a light dimmer(I'm not sure it would be able to handle the current) or a ceiling fan speed control.

      very interesting article. So yeah cheap filters probably don't do much. I'll see if I notice any difference in quality when using the filter or not. If I don't notice any difference than I will probably keep using the filter on the stock lens. That is because I have found the stock lens harder to clean. But yeah seems like they are not going to protect the lens at all.

      not really. I have so many strings of dead LED christmas lights I have an over stockpile of LEDs. This year alone my neighbors gave me all their dead strings and I have well over 5000 LEDs of various types and colors. Add that to previous donations and collections and the numbers soar on up there.. I even re-purposed some of the cold white version as usable light sources that are totally solar powered.

      +ElfNet Gaming Wow! It's gotta be a ton of work pulling all the bulbs out and then threading the LEDs into the holders. I'm surprised that the number of bulbs is the right amount for LEDs too.

    Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, MakerJ!! I totally love your new flywheel, what an awesome job. I've been looking around for one for my new steam engine ua-cam.com/video/YA6pC296v0o/v-deo.html or otherwise, something that I can use as a flywheel. I need to start collecting more scrap than I already have, lol. I am also contemplating casting one, maybe reproduce the flywheel from my Wilesco D16 steam engine. Right now I'm thinking of using lead (as much as I hate lead) cast into a plaster mold... Not sure if it will work... I don't have a mill, let alone a CNC but I do have a nice drill press that I've sometimes used as a lathe. I hope you can keep up the videos with your school schedule. Cheers!

      +ch300fnqi Thank you! I could cast you a mini version of this flywheel and send you it if you are interested. I love casting things and I always need more things to cast! I would love to promote your channel because your steam engines are truly awesome! -Makerj101

      +Makerj101 Hey thank you so much for your comments and offer!! I started to make a styrofoam pattern and intend to cast it in lead sometime later this week. I really like an antique look much like yours in fact and made a CAD drawing of it. If you are willing to cast it for me, that would be totally awesome! My diameter is 6 cm and width is 12 mm. Shaft size is 3/16". But anyway, only if you have time (I know you're busy)! Send me an email at pierre12 at gmail and we can chat. I will also get you some specs on the bushings that I'm using. All the best!

      @makerj101  8 років тому +1

      +ch300fnqi Cool! Lead would be a very good material for a flywheel since it's so heavy. Just not that healthy. Wash your hands that all. You could consider making it out of pewter or lead free solder. Lead free solder is fairly pricey. Pewter dishes and things can be found for a good deal at garage sales and such. Melts at a really low temperature and is heavy. I sent you an email too! Best wishes!

Its amazing to see this start from a idea and raw materials, to a petty sweet piece of function and art. Keep on keeping on! OK...that all being said.....please do a 4 stroke version. I know you can do it, and it would be great to see what you can come up with. 👍👍 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
    Great work, awesome job, you should be proud of yourself my friend!
