Part 5. DIY Internal Combustion Engine Made from Old Compressor - First Run and Copper Head Gasket

  • Part 5 is finally here! First we measured the compression ratio using a syringe and water. Then we made a new head gasket out of annealed 12AWG(0.0808 in)(2.05 mm) copper house wire. Then we soldered the ends together to make a continuous loop that would make a good seal. We then drilled a third hole in the cylinder which is the intake port(the carburetor will eventually be mounted on this hole). Then the most exciting part, I squirted some fuel into the intake after hooking the spark plug up to an neon sign transformer and used a piece of rope to start it. It sounds like an angry weed eater!!!
    BTW sorry for the long delay in posting this video. I have been very busy. I was helping out a lot at my local makerspace, HackPGH. I was helping build a flying machine for the Red Bull Flutag. I was the pilot. Good thing I didn't die! If you noticed the scratch on my head in the closing that was from my craft.
    Why? Because it will be a challenge and I like a little challenge. The main constraints that I have put on this project are limited power tools. I will only use a battery drill, hacksaw, and other common hand tools and materials. Working with constraints are what real world engineers basically do and I find it challenging and fun working in this way. There are three reason for trying to do this with minimal tools: 1. so anyone, even someone in a third world country can replicate. 2. to show what you might be able to do in an apocalyptic situation. 3. creative thinking. I hope you enjoy. Please leave ideas and suggestions in the comments below!
    Instagram and Facebook for project updates, and pictures of casting, making, hacking, building, and more!

    Holy cow. I have to admit, I was sceptical. Especially when drilling the hole for the piston-gated intake port, it seemed your drill alignment was pretty far off your mark.
    That combined with the "I guess it would go here" placement if the transfer port and the exhaust port, I thought it didn't have much chance of actually running.
    I stand corrected, you are a genius.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому +2

      Haha I was winging it pretty hard, eh? Yeah I noticed how far off the drill was when I was editing the video! I never noticed that when I was actually drilling it. I'm surprised that didn't mess it up. Thank you for your kind words!

      Yeah me too! It's pretty well balanced and being such a small engine it kinda has to be a fast runner. I'd guess it was easily going 6-8k RPM. Small nitro engines go like 12K RPM

    This is great! With a proper 2 stroke exhaust and a good carburetor, this little engine can get very fuel efficient! With some old automotive parts, a simple ignition system shouldn't be too hard to fabricate. When you're going to use premixed gas, i recommend to use synthetic oil for this type of engine.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому +1

      Hmm well in theory you could because you are getting twice as many explosions. However you would also be loosing a lot of benefits of a 4 stroke.

    • @ExperimentalFun
      @ExperimentalFun 7 років тому +2

      Yeah it would be a cool experiment though, I was thinking of using one of those 212cc predator engines from harbor fright, maybe put it on a gokart and do a top speed run before and after, would make for a interesting video at least.

    • @sswolf7208

      Sorry but it would be cheaper to buy a two stroke engine

    • @ExperimentalFun
      @ExperimentalFun 7 років тому +1

      well you can get one of those engines new with coupon for like $100, you cant find a 2 stroke engine that big for that cheap, but anyway that's not the point of doing it, mostly i want to do it because those engines are often used for racing go-karts and they sell many mods for them, but I could pretty much turn it into a 2 stroke for almost nothing and It would just be fun to see how good it works. (For entertainment purposes only)

I love your videos, and have been watching them a long time. Only one note; on the JB weld it tends to get brittle after a while, I am not sure how well it will wear, but the crank case isn't high pressure, so it should be ok for a while. For future reference, copper actually hardens when you let it air harden. It only softens when you quench it, best in water. Only carbon steel really hardens in a quench. I'm a hobbyist metalworker and knife maker, and I have messed up air cooling copper before and then cracking it when I bend it. It's a common misconception that copper anneals in the air. It hardens the crystal structure.

    Soldering on a gas cooker? Now I've seen everything xD
    I'm so glad it runs dude! Like you said, you definitely need a carburetor so you don't accidentally flood the engine (again haha). It might also be worth your time to design a proper exhaust pipe for this, since 2 strokes work best with a tuned exhaust; more power and much better efficiency due to backpressure. Pullstart is fine for now, I'd worry about making it work as efficiently as possible first before slapping a genny on it :)

      Although a normal 2 stroke has ball bearings. This has bush bearings so will 2 stroke style lubrication be sufficient or will the bearings fail. Time will tell I guess. Running it on LPG/propane wouldn't dilute the oil like petrol would therefore maintaining the viscosity that those bearings were designed for.

    For part 7 you might look up MSD spark boxes which is basically what your neon transformer is doing. MSD = Multiple Spark Duration, iirc. Great project!

    IT'S ALIVE!!!!!! Congrats on the first run. Glad to see you read my comment and fixed the compression ratio xD. Try to make a bracket to mount a small weedeater carb on, or just make one of your old jar carbs. If going jar use different tube diameters to adjust air/fuel mixture. Add smokeless 2 stroke oil to your fuel to keep it alive >_

    That engine is just awesome man!
    And at the end when your dad was there i just couldnt help but laugh a bit, that moment when your engine is finally running and you excitedly shout at your parents to come and look xD
