  • Is my medicine causing dementia? Which medications cause dementia??
We take medication expecting it to make us better or make us feel better. The last thing we want is to take a medication for one thing and have it make something get worse.
(See below for the full list)
If you are taking any of the Anti-Cholinergics as a long-term medication, then that is exactly what might be happening. You might be taking something to help you sleep or to lessen muscle spasms, and what it might be doing in the background is increasing your risk of developing dementia. Do you take any of the medications I discuss?

Thank you so much for the warning, Dr. Berry. It’s very thoughtful for you to spend your time and expertise to warn us. I’m 73 and my memory is just really starting to suffer and I’ve been on lots of these meds for a very long time. I have an excellent doctor and he stays right on top of my health problems but I will still check this out. Thanks again, sir.

They used to be god, now some still think they are. I have noticed that many have very limited medical knowledge, and those that do, have it only in a narrow speciality. That is quite understandable, as a Chemist, I don't know everything about chemistry, only a general knowledge, and only expertise in my speciality.

      @organichuman 4 роки тому +4

@@grancito2 That's great thing to be honest about though. It is just a shame some doctors are arrogant and rude enough to always think they know best or more than the patient does about everything and ignore what they say. The least they could do is listen and if necessary do more research into what is brought up.

I’m SO blessed to have a great doctor! He knows I was in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury 1967-70. He happens to play the guitar. Once we were talking about music and he broke into an old ROLLING STONES song and I chimed in. We take 5 or so minutes talking about my health and the rest of time we visit. He has a super sense of humor I told him that he’s like a “ beautiful mind”. Genius/but wonderfully weird. He said that’s what his kids tell him 😂. GOD bless him! I really love him

My mother was put on 25mg of Seroquel for dementia. The first time she took it she completely flipped out. Extreme delusions, paranoia, agitation, anger. It was a disaster. I didn’t give her any more after that first dose. I researched and it stays in your system for about 48 hrs. She returned to her baseline after a day and a half. Since then I have given her Sativa gummies. Night and day. She’s not agitated, she’s in good spirits, no paranoia or delusions.

My Dad suffered from Parkinson's, and towards the end he lost the ability to feed or clothe himself. He'd lost so much weight, and because his mind was still sharp but he was completely unable to communicate, he became frustrated then apathetic. Finally us kids suggested he try a Sativa-type med and Mom was willing to try anything if it would help him. We got him some chocolates (he had trouble swallowing and choked often, and the chocolates just melt in your mouth, plus he LOVED chocolate!) and within 24 hours he was hungry again! And slept better. Mom kind of laughed, said she never imagined that us grown kids (in our late 50's at that point) would know of this, but I give the credit to my sons for this--the youngest especially as he's done extensive research because the VA is now allowing this with veterans and he's a veteran's advocate. Anyway, sorry for the short-story, just wanted to say kudos for mentioning this type of treatment--it's been very successful for so many!

It (and many other institutions) have been captured by the industries they are suppose to be regulating/guarding against (such as the American Dietetic Association being "sponsored" by snack food and soft drink manufacturers). Boot the corruption out of these institutions so they can return to their intended purpose: Protecting people.

My mother's story: After she broke her nose from a fall on a tennis court about 45 years ago, she was prescribed strong pain meds that she became addicted to until 2.5 years ago. In addition, for about 20 years she was prescribed several other strong meds for a variety of things. So, 2.5 years ago I took my mom to her doctor for a check-up. He pulled up her chart to review her meds, and I asked him why she was on so many meds. He said because she needs them. Hmm. She began showing signs of dementia right around the time of that doctor's visit. I was able to wean her off the pain meds, and then I eventually weaned her off all other meds. She has been completely drug free for 2 years, and is completely healthy, except for her mind!!! Also, she has no pain anywhere in her body. Unfortunately, her dementia is getting noticeably worse by the week. Whether her dementia is caused by the DECADES of prescription drug use, I don't know, but it sure seems like it could be a significant contributing factor.

I began paying attention to my general level of health and make correlations between it and what I was eating. Now, if I even indulge in a sugary dessert a few nights in a row, I feel it! Dr Berry is correct, it’s a tough decision. My wife suffered an 18mm aneurysm on her internal carotid artery 17 years ago. The coils used to treat the aneurysm push against her trigeminal nerve and caused paralysis of the muscles that control eye movement. Trigeminal neuralgia is know as the suicide disease, it is that painful. High doses of gabapentin is the only treatment that works to control the pain. The trade off is short term memory loss. A difficult, difficult decision to make, extreme pain or memory loss.

I started taking a diuretic that’s included in the second list in October 2018 for HBP. I told the doctor that my plan was not to be taking this very long. In early May 2019 I started Keto and lost 13 pounds. I ran out of the prescription a few days before seeing my doctor the first week in June. My pressure was normal each time I took it. After not taking it for two weeks, he officially removed the diuretic from my prescription list. I’m taking no meds thanks to Keto along with a little mineral supplementation.

It is my firm belief that the massive rise in Dementia coincides with the increase in carbohydate intake due to totally erroneous dietary advice mandated by negligent Governments and that adopting a ketogenic diet will prevent dementia and probably reverse many of its effects. Some serious research should be undertaken into this as it is a looming disaster.

I think it's due to all the immunizations we get that have aluminum in the aluminum is the thing that activates the immune system to whatever they want us to be immune to. I'm not getting any more immunizations I want to pay $300 for a shot to keep from getting shingles when it can give you shingles! I had shingles and it's no fun and they wanted me to get the shot I said I'm not risking that again plus I'm not paying $300 for it! After suffering through for a few weeks with the shingles with the terrible burn terrible itch I said if I had terrible sunburn like this I'd be putting vitamin E on it so I got a thousand IU tablets prick the capsule and spread it on the rash which was half my back and it was instant pain relief. The rash healed I could wear regular clothes again no scar showed up and no nerve damage. My doctor was truly amazed at how fast it healed I have no side effects from that shingles. So if you ever get shingles or know someone tell him to get the vitamin E out and start spreading it on no more itch and no more burning

As a colorectal cancer survivor, one of the parting gifts of the treatments that saved my life, was some loss of bowel control. When the urge came, I needed to find a bathroom quickly. I was told I would never regain control, because the muscles had been damaged by the radiation treatments. There were several close calls, so my physician put me on a lifetime regiment of Loperamide (Imodium). I was told it was safe, but I still had concerns about taking any drug forever. I slowly weened myself off of it, and after watching your video, I'm really glad I did. Over time and with the addition of Intermittent Fasting, I now have completely normal and predictable bathroom habits.

This is such vital information for many patients. Often chronic pain is lost along the way and think Dr' find it easier to just allow the same meds to be taken "forever" if the patient does not complain of any worse pain or less pain. They just feel "If it is working, that is gret" Hopefully many tests were done to find out why the pain is there to be with.
I do thank you for you posting this and do think more will talk with their own Primary Physician or other specialist and see if it is right for them to continue any of the above medications, at least. Sometimes changes can be good.

When I was 12 years old I had a bleeding ulcer and almost died. My doctor put me on tagament, a very high dosage. My mom questioned the doctor after 2 1/2 years. He literally said, "oops, I forgot to stop that." I didn't know if I had gone to school, I would ask what was for dinner an hour after we ate. I wouldn't know if I had said hello to someone right after we talked. Thank God my mom and friends knew I didn't do drugs.
I still have some memory loss but not nearly as bad as then. It's sad that I'm better with my memory at 50 than 12-14 years old.

Thank you Dr. Berry, your videos have literally changed my health for the better. I wanted to add DOXYLAMINE SUCCINATE to this list. It’s an anticholinergic too and is sold under brand names such as Unisom. Unisom is sold under TWO DIFFERENT FORMULAS: Unisom Sleep Gels which are Disphenhydramine (and are on Dr. Berry’s list here) , and Unisom Tabs, which are Doxylamine Succinate (and not on the list here). I know this list wasn’t intended to list every single medication, but I thought I’d mention Doxylamine because it’s commonly sold via Unisom over the counter sleep aids.

2:50 - Doctors need to plan and monitor when to stop prescribing meds, that burden should not fall on the patient. As patients we need question every prescription and refill because our doctors may be negligent about reviewing our pharmaceutical history with each visit. This goes for the NDs as well as the MDs.

I made a complaint today, on Metoprolol. Its been given to my sister for years now, causing short term memory loss and confusion. Otherwise she is a super great historian! I notice a difference the moment she is given this! I call it a knock out drug and the next morning she does not remember anything from the night before! But, I am her memory care and if I start her recall and visit with her, tell her to search her memory, all comes back! Her blood pressure is so low and then she is given this drug at her nursing home, just to get her to go to sleep, I believe. Its not needed at all.
No one will address the issue or remove my sister from this drug she is given; although she has 2 other medications! I researched it, and it should not be given to seniors over age 65, or for longer than 3 years! Its going on 5-6 years!

Fell asleep and woke up pain free. I cannot say enough. I was in Hawaii with my mother and her epidural injection did not work. I suggested CBD oil and she consented. I found a shop and walked to it and purchased some. The rest is history. CBD really helped my mom where the epidural failed! I did not get a root canal like my dentist suggested either!!!!!! I was prescribed losarten for HB for about eighteen years. After about 5 yrs of taking this I was diagnosed as having diabetic retinopathy even tho my A1C# remained under 60. For ten years I suffered through painful shots in the eyes. My feet turned red. Puzzled I finally read that broken blood vessels can be caused by long term use of Losarten. I stopped immediately. After getting those painful and frightening shots for years I never again needed another shot. This is after years of getting these shots monthly. Two years have gone by. My feet are clearing and as I said, I never needed another shot in the eyes. YES check ALL your meds. It is not a joke. Excellent advice. Do not just trust your doctor. I feel that medicine these days is aimed around making big pharma rich NOT providing the best patient care. I find it frightening. Protect yourself and your family!

Very important information with great support for people to take responsibility for their health and have real, often health saving conversations with their doctors. So many people don't question their doctors - they follow blindly what has been given to them in forms of diet and prescriptions - however this is not the way to go, especially these days when so many doctors do not have time to read their medical journals with the latest studies, to research and search out non-pharmaceutical supports and/or alternatives for medications - Thank you for this informative video, Dr. Berry

Only a real doctor would put a whole website of listed medications just in a UA-cam video description. Thanks Dr. Berry! We know there's probably another whole list to mention. People do need to work with there doctors, and mind those side effects. Forntunely for me and my sensitive system, meds either work super well or nearly kill me, so I'm in constant negotiations with my doctor's. Falling back on lifestyle adjustments and physical therapies, or in my case relaxation therapies and mental health excersizes, can certainly help keep you from "over" using medication to begin with.

I wonder if any of these drugs can cause canine dementia. Some of my dogs have been given Claritin for their allergies and our deceased German Shepherd suffered from dementia and severe anxiety probably due to the dementia. I would think it's not out of the question for our furry family members to suffer some of the same side effects from these drugs as we do. Going to have to be more careful with our current dog as she also suffers from seasonal allergies and she has been given Benydryl and Claritin.

The people posting that they just want a list and don't want to listen to the video are the people he is talking about in the 9 minutes he is speaking. People who blindly take (or stop taking) medication instead of understanding what it is they are putting into their bodies are the ones who end up with conditions like dementia because they are not questioning anything or even bringing up to their doctors that they have been on a medication for a long time that really should be a short-term solution. The risks are worse than the benefits in a lot of situations, so doctors will use anticholinergic medications for short-term use, but unless the benefits outweigh the risk of potential dementia with long-term use, anticholinergics should not be taken for long periods of time. If you don't know what that word means, do what he is suggesting and talk to your doctor and/or Google it. His entire message is to use our brains and talk to our doctors instead of making decisions based off a list from some random doctor on UA-cam. He is actually sharing really important information and is a good doctor for doing this instead of giving people a list they don't understand and will blindly jump to conclusions about. Listen, think about what he is saying, and talk to a medical professional.

The trouble with such "helpful " videos is they need to cut to the chase, not let us wait so long for info that is promised.

Be smart enough to click the more info next to title of video. That's the problem today everyone wants it now, right now, I don't want to wait even 1 second longer. Grow up! I remember when U actually had to go to a library and spend hours or even days of doing your own research. If you remember that as well, then you should really be ashamed!

Good to have information. I must say, though, that the more “open communication” between dr./patient is quite new. You can say it’s also the patient’s responsibility, but people grew up trusting their doctors and respected their profession. Generations were never given info that would ever have made them question their doctor, people had faith. Going forward this will change, but millions went through life without information.

Diphenhydramine, commonly known as antihistamine Benadryl. Is my longest medicine ever. Until now. I have five stars in IU's of vitamin D3. I would prefer to talk to a pharmacist instead of a doctor.

I’ve only just started Keto and I feel great. My father started paleo/primal years ago. He lost allot of weight, he avoided type2, gout, and a slew of other heath problems. But over the last few years he started having major problems with memory loss and early onset of dementia. He also has thyroid problems, that he blames for his memory loss no matter what doctors tell him. He self medicated with all kinds of supplements that I’ve said could be the problem. This happened so suddenly and like I said he has been doing low carb/paleo/primal for years. His health for his age (mid60’s) was unbelievable. Now his brain deterioration seems to have accelerated and we don’t know what to do. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Started taking Amitriptyline 15 years ago for restless legs, 25mg a night. Been trying to get off slowly and I am at 10mgs currently. This med is physically addictive. If I drop more than 10% a month I get withdrawals: chills, fatigue, aches. I wish I never swallowed the first pill!

Considering the medical studies that have come out suggesting the cause of depression might very well be gut-related, I think it's extremely important that anyone, myself included, look into ways to combat this. I'm guessing the probiotic route, but I'm new to this, so I'll certainly continue to research & would suggest others do the same. It would appear proper gut health is essential for the body's health in so many ways.

I just looked up the cholinergic wiki to understand why these drugs increase risk of these diseases. "Neurologically, cholinergic is the abbreviated term referring to acetylcholine, (the suffix -ergic means stimulating). The parasympathetic nervous system, which uses acetylcholine almost exclusively to send its messages, is said to be almost entirely cholinergic. Neuromuscular junctions, preganglionic neurons of the sympathetic nervous system, the basal forebrain, and brain stem complexes are also cholinergic." So these drugs stop the "stimulation", correct? Reading further, it makes me wonder if supplementing with choline would be of benefit to reducing the risk of Alzheimer's. It also is supposed to prevent fat deposits in the liver and "facilitates the movement of fats into the cells" (meaning it helps with insulin resistance?).

GraeMatterz I am on one of these drugs, so I take choline twice a day. However, not all cholines cross the blood brain barrier. Alpha GPC pharmaceutical grade does. It is sold on Amazon. Also - exercise!

I was on cyclobenzaprine for many years, and then I have a TIA and I was starting to lose my words & forgetfulness and my neurologist instantly told me to stop taking it & I was hospitalized because he felt it was a contributing factor and I did stop it because I felt I was getting early onset dementia because my father Had that with Alzheimer’s and died so there’s so much truth to what you just said
