  • I document the process I take to get my cheap, used $100 Gammon Percussion drum set to sound less like a collection of airtight paint buckets and more like the monster rhythm machine that it was destined to be.

    For the snare drum, new heads and snares go a long way, so it’s a really good idea to get replace those to really get a better sound out of it. The same really goes for any drum.

      Hi Zak. You're absolutely right. I'm just a cheapskate ;-) New heads would probably go a LONG way in making the drums sound even better.

      @@CJHazard no, do not change your drum kit, I made this error a while ago, If you think your drum sucks just put on some new heads, change the cymbals, the hihat also I recommend Zildjian as your new cymbals, it could cost you approximately 2 to 4 hundred bucks

    I bought the same kit for my kid. I over did it a bit. Superkick II on the bass drum and ec2s on the Toms, genera dry on the snare. After much work, it sounds like a 900 drum kit.

    Nice video man! Like several others here id recommend changing heads.
    Id also recommend looking into some audio production techniques man. Some eq, compression, stereo panning are super helpful in getting a great drum sound. Its also crucial to have overheads in phase distanced equally from the snare and panned left and right. Just some thoughts of mine, great video... keep it up brother.

    I traded a bad guitar for a bad drumkit once. It was a borg kit from Sam's Club or something like that. I converted all the toms to single-headed, and the bass was already single-headed. I put a whole bunch of old pillows in the drum. I bought really heavy heads for the toms. Then I did the same for the snare, as well as some new wires. The cymbals I sourced some old marching cymbals, which you can basically use for crashes, rides or hats. Sounds ok. I'd record with it, but I don't think I would tour with it.

    A head replacement is definitely recommended to get a better sound. For the snare & toms, I recommend Remo Coated Pinstripes on the batters. For the bottom heads , I recommend Remo Clear Ambassadors. On the snare bottom, a Remo Snare Ambassador is recommended. For the bass drum, Coated Remo Powerstroke 3s are recommended.

    Gotysed zbt cymbal and a used Yamaha gigmaker drum set with hardware for $300 recently. A pretty good deal. These drumset take quite a bit of work to fix and to get a way better significance sound you have to change out the drum heads. Which can cost about $80 for new heads so I get why some wouldn’t see it worth it to do it.

    • @CJHazard
      @CJHazard  2 роки тому

      For sure, sometimes these drums just need a little bit of TLC and energy to get them sounding good. Other times, it's not even worth it haha.

  • @Medievalfan94

    Snare wires propably not straight, fix that and then bring the snare wure tension up, even out the tension in the head, propably more tension on the snare head, but thats a wild guess since you didnt tap the bottom head again after you mentioned you tightened it. Try to hit an intervall between top and bottom head, that reduces unwanted overtones by alot.
    Toms alot of the same, even out the tension in the heads, tune top and bottom to the same pitch for the most resonance, hit intervalls between the heads to reduce resonance. Give the drumset calculator from TuneBot a try to get some suggestions on what note to hit. Their values are not set in stone, but good starting points though.
    You did not have the heads in tune on multiple drums. This is important!

    You muffled the kick drum maybe a little bit too much cause you can hear the hinges of the pedal squeak and you want some kind of tone with the bass drum. Great job though!

    Besides Karate I play drums. I feel like an old white privileged spoiled kid. I enjoyed your video. You did a great job with the Gammon drum kit. My main kit is an 90's Ludwig rocker kit. I have three other kits one being a Gammon kit. The thing I like about the Gammon kit is the ride Toms are the same size as vintage kits. If your a 70's listener most the recordings are using the 8 by 12 and 9x13 such as you have with your Gammon's. Newer KIts (even my Ludwig Rockers) are deeper Ride Toms. One good thing to do with these cheaper kits is put Evans heads on them preferably Evans hydraulics.

    You should, get a drum tuner, or just tighten them enough to get any rinkles out,, you can use tape in the inside,, to take the ringing out, a pillow in the kick drum, remember the bottom head, is tuned different than the top the secret to making a cheap drum set sound good, is Remo heads, and tuning, each drum is tuned to a specific note. Learn how to tune correctly. Right bro.
