When I worked on a fishing boat, I was told by the captain, that the "golden" color you mentioned was from fish rubbing up against rust from wrecks. And if you look at the color, it's more rusty then golden.
Love how skinner has aluminum dingy with a trolling motor that cost more then the boat.... Let the friends spend the big money on the ocean rigs hahaha
The “rust” (orange coloring ) on the tog is caused by the orange colored algae that forms on the rocks down there. U will see it in clearer water , it’s like orange soft coral , but not coral. Pretty cool to see tog that have the orange on them , they use it to blend in
Another great vid! Just ordered that tsunami slimwave rod. Should make the filming much. Enter. Those black rods hard to see the action but you’ve nailed it with this one! Thx for sharing.
I think the golden coloration has something to do with their environment. Fish will often change color to blend in better with their surroundings, so with the blackfish it could be that there’s rusty structure or rust-colored plants or something
Ever fish off pribble beach? Many good to large boulders!! Right where the old monestary is!! Do some research of where the old monestary Ruins are!! Good luck!
Nice video John as always. I use a 1.5oz aTog jig with 50lb power pro and 50lb flouro leader on a 9ft ugly stick with local small crabs , yesterday topped 1 off at 27 inches 14 pounds from shore it's on fire right now.
I enjoyed your video. That golden color on the Blackfish, I've seen that on fish caught on Elias's channel could they be from the South and found their way up here. Also how well do the batteries stand up with the trolling motor running allot.
Very soft bite for us yesterday In that neck of the woods some nice fish though albies every where had a albie rod rigged would catch them In between the togs spot lock got me jealous thanks for sharing 👌
larrysheetmetal li sound doesn’t usually have cod or haddock and the oceanic waters on the south shore don’t get cold enough for them until December or January, even then you need to go offshore for a slim chance of finding a wreck holding them
John, curious to know the tackle setup when fishing deeper waters. Are you still using spinning gear or switching over to conventional gear with lead weights and hook rigs?
John, great video as usual. I did not see the link to the rod but I saw your comment to someone else that states I guess that the slim wave is a 6’4”. I have a 7’ slim wave which I bought used but I too think it’s too soft in the tip. Can I ask how far you cut it back and do you like it after you cut it for Blackfishing with a jig. Thanks much
tannic acid in the water most likely ...the fish probably move to waters more inland, more laden with leaf fall and other detritus decomposing releasing tannic acid.... maybe during certain parts of the season maybe for mating in estuaries .. it is interesting,....
I love that rod. I have 5 Slimwaves - I use the spinning Slimwaves on the kayak for Striped bass and the conventional setup for jigging on a boat and for fluke. Deceptively strong.
Hi John. I just purchased this exact slimwave rod and I’m pairing it with a Stradic 4000 that I plan to use on my inshore setup as well. Would 20lb test braid be ok with a 20-25lb fluro leader?
John, which rod would you prefer for jetty Tog fishing, the tsunami slow pitch or the tsunami slimwave. Any other insights on the rod would be appreciated.
Hey john nice video. Thank you for all the detail when the black fish biting . And it is the nice rod for showing how black fish bite on the hook really nice . Is that northore or southore and can you tell me what kind boat is it I really like your boat
I have been told by several captains that the yellowish/brownish color is due to them rubbing up un rusted steel. Not sure if its true or not but it's what i have heard.
I would be very surprised, since there are very few metal wrecks in the area I fish. Plus the color is in their skin, not on it. I don't recall seeing any large golden blackfish. If it came from wrecks, I'd expect the color to be spread across all sizes.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing makes perfect sense, only mentioned it because i asked the same question when i fished out of Montauk on charity trips we do every year.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing on a separate note, I love your videos. Very educational, you have without a doubt, made me a better and more successful fisherman. Most of the methods i use are based on your videos. thank you and keep up the great work.
Someone dug it out between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning! Had my front wheels on cement launching and retrieving! Big relief. It will get buried again on Thursday.
Are you using a leader with the jig or tying directly to braid? If you’re using a leader, what test and how are you connecting to main line - swivel like you do for fluke?
Always use a fluorocarbon or mono leader as braid is not very resistant abrasion. Lowest I’d go personally would be 20, but I usually use 30-40lb line. You may use a swivel or a connection knot such as an Alberto or FG knot.
Are the Crab peeler or soft backs or maybe just Hard backs?? ?! Im curiouse as over here in the UK we only use peeler 🤔 not many species eat Hard backs over here 👍
IN Fairhaven Massachusetts the Asian Crabs are insanely populated in certain rocky shores. I have caught 4 gallons at a time But sadly,.green crab and orange guts rule buzzards bay. I have garbage results with the Asian crabs i use. There smaller than yours

Glad to see that the warm water temperatures have not impeded the black fishing season
Love how skinner has aluminum dingy with a trolling motor that cost more then the boat.... Let the friends spend the big money on the ocean rigs hahaha
I wouldn’t call it a dingy but it’s definitely a fishing boat. Nice to see people in affordable boats also like the TA fishing channel for that reason
3/4 oz!...had to use 12 oz to hold bottom up here in Nantucket sound. Nice video as always .
Amazing video, thanks for the information on the rod and motor.
This is the best video I have ever seen.

That's the best explanation I've read yet.
Wow, looks like I'm buying a trolling motor with that anchor lock. That thing is pretty sweet
It’s like a million bucks
Love the blackfish rod tip dance. Those sea bass caught a lucky break!
Another great vid! Just ordered that tsunami slimwave rod. Should make the filming much. Enter. Those black rods hard to see the action but you’ve nailed it with this one! Thx for sharing.
Thank you for the Blackish video. Never seen those before. Then living in the Midwest only see the 'normal' inland fish types here. Take care Spin
I always enjoy watching your videos John!
Thanks! :))

14lb tog from shore. I want to see a picture.
I believe it. My best is over 15# from the beach, weighed at Rocky Point Fishing Stop. My second best from the beach is 13#.
You dont count John, youre some kind of demi god fish whisperer. Thats awesome though ive never gotten one from boat or shore over 8lbs.
I enjoyed your video. That golden color on the Blackfish, I've seen that on fish caught on Elias's channel could they be from the South and found their way up here. Also how well do the batteries stand up with the trolling motor running allot.
Great tasting fish they really are.

Pretty cool technology!! It is a pain to anchor especially for blackfishing.
Dumb Question ? Why no Cod or Haddock fishing ? How far out would have go to catch them ?
larrysheetmetal li sound doesn’t usually have cod or haddock and the oceanic waters on the south shore don’t get cold enough for them until December or January, even then you need to go offshore for a slim chance of finding a wreck holding them
John, I used a slimwave conventional this weekend myself. Said the same thing you did. Awesome action and very strong
Whats the prefered length
Tog fishing is so much fun
John, curious to know the tackle setup when fishing deeper waters. Are you still using spinning gear or switching over to conventional gear with lead weights and hook rigs?
Depends on current, but I typically am not interested in fishing the heavy stuff so seek out places conducive to jigging.
I purchased one of your 2oz jigs , do you recommend lighter ? I'm fishing from shore.
Go as light as you can for the water conditions. For me that's 1 or 1 1/2 ounces from shore.
John, great video as usual. I did not see the link to the rod but I saw your comment to someone else that states I guess that the slim wave is a 6’4”. I agree on the 7-footer. I cut that too. This one I like as-is. The link to the "white rod" is in the video description.

Do you recommend bleeding them out as well? Great Vid!
Definitely!
you are the best... Love watching your hook set. How often do you rotate spots as to not over fish a pile?
I see that you're using a swivel versus tying your fluorocarbon to the braid
I love that rod. I have 5 Slimwaves - I use the spinning Slimwaves on the kayak for Striped bass and the conventional setup for jigging on a boat and for fluke. Deceptively strong.
What length is good
another great post John
Hey John your slime wave is the 6/4 medium Heavy right ?
I got that rod this summer, wasn't paying attention and broke the tip off. i guess it will be a 6ft rod now
Hi John. I just purchased this exact slimwave rod and I’m pairing it with a Stradic 4000 that I plan to use on my inshore setup as well. Would 20lb test braid be ok with a 20-25lb fluro leader?

Neither. I'd go with this one. Less money too. bit.ly/2nTWbSX
Thanks, looks like it could be used for fluke as well. Cheers
Absolutely the Best Fish Ever thanks for the Vid
Hey John quick question with the anchor lock, does that work separately (having its own gps) or does that use the gps off your fishfinder?
separately
John, where are you finding the Asian crab? All I have seen in bait stores is green crab so far.
Was going to ask same q. John? Thx
FWIW, the fish have that same golden coloring up here in southern MA

hey john or anyone whats the reason for not using the bait casters while blackfishing??
the color comes from the wrecks they are on, the iron red
What rod are you using very nice
That's a Tsunami slimwave. There's a link in the video description.
Are those Asian crabs on the north shore or south or both? Thanks.
Both.
Mr Skinner what kind of boat is that?
I have the same question John ???? What kind of boat ???
45-year-old starcraft 16'

@Robert Phillips talking about the boat or the skipper?
Hay john is that the slimwave 6'4 mh
Yes.
John do you catch your own bait- crabs- ?... or from tackle place
Hello John, what model trolling motor do you recommend ? I have the same boat as you.
80# thrust, 60-inch shaft.
John Skinner Fishing , thanks Mr. Skinner.
Any preference on tide ? rising, falling also how do you bleed them ?
I cut them in the gills and then head first into a bucket with some water.
Do you think sand fleas would work as good ? Great video thanks 🐡
Definitely!
Will the depths you’re fishing in this video still hold blackfish as it gets later in the season?
a couple of more weeks
How did you do on that boat ramp Sunday afternoon?
Someone dug it out between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning! Had my front wheels on cement launching and retrieving! Big relief. It will get buried again on Thursday.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Good to hear! Ill probably be kayaking out that way this Sunday as the weather is looking good
Forgot to ask, how well does that trolling motor hold in a lot of current?
Fine in just about any current you're looking to bottom fish in. Certainly OK for 2 knot current, likely OK for near 3.
Thanks John

John can you send me the model number for the rod and reel can't open the link for some reason

Would you recommend this setup for DD blackfish
I've seen it done twice this past season.
Thanks bro you've been a great help and I really like and appreciate what you doing so keep up the good work
John, just wondering if you've tried the Gulp fiddler crabs when black fishing. I know you're a big fan of Gulp products for fluke. Just curious.
I've caught them on Gulp, but wouldn't go out without real crabs.
Whats the proper way to bait the crab?
Are the Crab peeler or soft backs or maybe just Hard backs??
?! Im curiouse as over here in the UK we only use peeler 🤔 not many species eat Hard backs over here 👍
Just regular hard shell crab works fine, blackfish are experts at eating them. Commonly found in stomachs of cod and sea bass as well.
Do you bleed out these tog/blackfish?
Yes. I bleed everything I'm going to eat.
I just wish I could afford that trolling motor they have to come down in price but it looks like it's worth it
does anyone know any where you can surf fish for these guy never caught one and i would love to
LongIslandLunkers basically any rocky jetty or inlet in the northeast.
Whats the difference between tuatog and bergall??
Tautog are fatter and usually bigger, blackfish have a 16 inch minimum in ny and Bergall have no limit.
Theyre two different fish google it
What length is the rod
6' 4'', there's a link in the video description.

Are there any advances to have the 6’4” rod vs the 7”? If they’re both related MH?
I didn't care for the 7, and cut it back. That tip was way to soft for my liking. The 6'4'' is awesome as-is.
Arm tired?
Do you suspend the bait just off the bottom?
I sit it on the bottom.
