Thank you Paul for the tips on getting a mouthpiece. My band teacher told me to get a Shilke 51d trigger trombone mouthpeice because I can do major scales three octaves, but thank you for the tips. Your one of my favorite trombone youtubers, when you play trombone I always smile because you are so good.

Kaleb Malec My band said that was the recommended mouthpiece(for us) and it works better then my old 6 1/2 (before my trigger)

But what I’d one feels really comfortable, but sounds muddy when you play? I have a Rudy Much that feels good but the tone is terrible compared to when I play with my Schilky . However, the Schilky takes a lot of lung power compared to the Rudy Muck. Ive not played very much in the past several years and my lungs are weak, plus, I have some respiratory problems, so it’s kinda a trade off.

There are as many great mouthpieces in the world as there are people and as he said everyone is different but if you want to try a wick mouthpiece call DF Music they do mouthpiece trials, and the owner is a pretty cool dude and can help you find a fit.

You are providing good advice. I M H O your process should work for pretty much any brass wind player. Currently using a Bach 6 1/2 AL. Sometimes I can get my Schilke 51D to work for me. It has beautiful deep tone. Range is sometimes an issue for my playing on the 51D and high notes tend to be a bit under the
center pitch. Don't seem to have that issue with the 6 1/2 AL. It does have a brighter tone though.

A couple weeks ago I had a chance to try a bunch of different mouthpieces all at the same time. I never had the opportunity before. And you are right, Paul; when you find the right one you know.
I ended up with another Equa-Tru. Though I did get a different one for my back up trombone.

the mouthpiece I feel are the best for me in all ranges and articulations is the Parduba #2 double cup on trumpet I also use the Parduba 5 1/2 double cup and they feel and sound great! very efficient mouthpieces on the air because of the cup design and throat I find myself playing more freely and longer passage with these than with the Vincent bach mp's I began playing with.

I found a Getzen 1 1/2 G was great with my CONN 88H, but did not work so well when I picked up a Strad 42BO. Been using a Bach 3G. Has a much better tone and ease of range with this heavier instrument.

I recently picked up a replacement 12c no name MP from amazon and also a 6 1/2 al having never played anything but the 12c that came with my old horn. So I did a comparison today of the two 12c's and they are not created equal...oddly enough the Yamaha 45c2-12c plays better than the no name 12c...whodathunkit? So the Yamaha MP is a bit beat up (hate to spend the bucks for the OEM MP) as the original owner was a bit rough on it so I find I have better upper register with the Yamaha MP but better tone in the middle registers with the 6 1/2 al. Also the 6 1/2 al is quite a bit harder to control on the upper end and the upper range just isnt there. Is that something I might eventually grow into? Or is it likely a permanent condition?

I play with the 12c and I find it difficult to hit that high range . I know if a mouthpiece feels comfortable is important , maybe i should choose a slightly larger one im sort of baffled and in a rut . Any ideas would be appreciated ?

I played through HS and recently got our my old horn. I have 2 mouthpieces in the case and I was trying to remember what I used. 12C and 6 1/2AL. The AL feels better to me so after watching your video I must have used 12C when I started in elementary school and moved to AL.
I have an Olds Recording trombone, and love it.

Okay, but-but-but what about the tweens just starting out in band who can't tell whats comfortable, or what if they can't put their mouths on several different ones? We worry about buying a mouthpiece kiddo will grow out of fast. We got her a used beginner Yamaha, and told her if she stuck with it, we'd try to find a nicer one, but I kinda think the mouthpiece should be one that could last her a couple years. Thoughts? Suggestions?...
