    Any tips for increasing stamina and better tone for the higher register?

    • @PaulTheTrombonist
      @PaulTheTrombonist  6 років тому +77

      long tones , long tones long tones. In all registers. Stamina comes in time. You have to rest and build your embouchure muscle endurance in the same way a weight lifter does. So what I would do is play more and more each day little by little and over time that will give you more stamina

      Make sure you only work until you're very tired at most! If you become exhausted, or heaven forbid, hurt yourself, then you're not going to improve. Stay comfortable. Don't push yourself too hard. Best of luck!

    This man looks like Marty McFly playing trombone lol...something that works for me trying to improve my tone aside from long tones is to not force the sound out. Have a relaxed embouchure. Try playing scales slowly in time and with a tuner. Make sure to play every note consistently the same: Same tone, same length, same volume. Do this slowly and any other exercise to help with improving your tone. One of my professors said to be obsessed with tone improvement and do daily practice routines every. single. day. Do fundamentals, lip slurs, long tones, etc. The act of practicing these aspects will help to gradually improve your tone if you COMMIT to a practice routine. You can't skip a day, because then your muscle memory will go away and you will have to re-do it.

    Thanks for making these videos. Sharing your knowledge is by far one of the most noble things a human can do. I bought your book. I'm an old French horn player who was always unhappy with that instrument (my parents forced me into it) so I'm switching to trombone, the instrument I always wanted to play since childhood - and I'm already pretty happy with what I've got going on tone-wise after only a few weeks of playing, although I have to get used to the slides and reading bass clef, and adjusting my embochure for the new mouthpiece. Don't care if I ruin my embochure for horn because I'm never going back to it. Even though I hated the horn, I always liked the sound I got out of it. My favorite player by far is Tommy Dorsey and a few family friends who are truly great players.
    Do you think it is ok for me to annotate on all the sheet music the slide positions and note names as I start out?... never did that for valve instruments but I can't seem to remember in the moment. haha forgive me I'm a beginner in some aspects and a sort of expert in others!
