I have two trombones. They're both Olds, one is an ambassador and one is a studio. They're bot from the early fifties so around 70 years old. The interesting thing is the ambassador is a dual bore while the professional studio is a single bore. The ambassador is worth probably only $150 or so second hand yet it plays so well. Much better than a P bone or that cheap Amazon bone you've just showcased. Both the bones I own have beautiful slides yet neither have been serviced in the 50 years I've owned them. So my point is don't buy a new piece of crap but get a great second hand one.

I am not a trombone player, played trumpet/coronet and baritone/euphonium in school. Recently found an Olds trombone in case at Valu-Village for about $35. 60's or more likely 70's vintage, with a nice silver mouthpiece. I haven't played for 45 years, but what the hell!

I've found that on new student trombones most of the time the slide should be washed clean and brushed with a snake or similar tool because most of the factory lubricants tend to be rough and have a bit of debris. The quality improves, not by a long shot but just enough for it to be tempered with time.

(former) Trombonist and soundman here. I have to say, the overall tone quality of that cheap trombone is pretty good. Don't get me wrong, your William trombone has much better hamonics to it, a very sweet instrument indeed. Of course, a bad slide will tire you sooooo fast, I know what it is. Since we can't feel that over youtube, we judge what we can. Soundwise, that 189$ thing aint' too bad! Much better sound than those crappy plastic P-Bone we had to endure a while ago.

I believe it is great that people can start playing trombone with less than 200$! Other instruments are simply too expensive for someone who only wants to try to play. When I was a trombonist I was interested in learning how to play the tuba, but the cheapest ones was too expensive (min 1500€) for someone who doesn't want to become a professional musician. In my mind, this type of low cost trombones allows to a lot of people to get in touch with music and with our great instrument, and this is why I really appreciate them

Too good. Yes, I had the same experience with a Shires custom I had made like a King 3B. It was the Cadillac of Trombones. But, it was so precise that I cracked notes with it. Very unforgiving. So many things can affect a trombone. I have 6 Pan American Trombones from way back. 5 are total dogs. One plays like a $2k trombone. I have found that the lead pipe was the difference. One out of six was great.

However, all the rentals had horrible slides from prior student abuse so we returned it and bought him a $200 Amazon Trombone. The slide seems pretty good and his teacher was satisfied w it. Excellent demo. Unbelievable price for a trombone and case. To my untrained ear there seemed to be a better sound from your Williams. It sounds like you record with a bit of a concert hall setting on your equipment. It’s a gorgeous sound but it confuses me a bit. I’m sure it’s the gloves.

I'm only an amateur so my view probably means nothing.
However, 100% preferred the Budget trombone to the pro bone. Just sounded a fraction clearer.
Both sounded great mind, just personal choice for sound would be the Amazon.
Obviously, in terns of quality, you get what you pay for so would expect a pro horn to be built far better than a cheap one.

I bought an Amazon trombone for a 12 year old boy for $93 plus tax. The slide was the same as in your video. However, I cleaned it very well and the slide was much better. The young man I bought this for (his birthday) because he wanted to learn to play after hearing me play, and obviously I knew this horn wasn’t going to compare with a higher quality horn, but for a kid starting out, it was fine, especially if, as was in this case, the student loses interest after a year or two. Not much of a loss in this case. Loved your Williams!

As soon as I saw the “band now” sticker on the counterweight I knew what was gonna happen. My first customer repair over 11 years ago was on an Earl Williams. Talk about nerve wracking.

Fun comparison. I would have done the Bill Watrous cleaning on the slide and used a little more lube and a shot of water. The bigger the gob the better the job. A good slide makes a world of difference. I have a 1937 Blessing dual bore that my dad carried aboard ship in the south Pacific in WWII. In college, h never been serviced H
e lost the outer slide at the top of Keezar bleachers. He found it at the bottom no dents. My other horn is a King 3B I found languishing on a pawn shop. The slides on both of these are a 10.

By the same token a pro does not necessarily want their horn to slot too well to the extent that they loose flexibility. The Yamaha YSL354 comes to mind. Good instrument and the deep notch slotting is great for student confidence, but it sits in the partials so deep it makes it a bit cumbersome to slur or trill.

  • @brassplyer
    @brassplyer 9 місяців тому +1

I dunno - based on the sound coming over UA-cam through some decent speakers and not being influenced by confirmation bias of having to justify spending 5 grand there isn't a significant difference in the quality of the sound between them. The quality control on dirt cheap (Chinese?) instruments can vary - the slide on another one might be fine. I'll bet doing some tweaking on it could smooth it out. Making sure the tubes are completely straight and aligned, polishing both tubes. If the tubes are off and **can't** be made parallel without a major reworking that would cost more than the instrument is worth that's another story.
I have an approximately $300 Chinese C trumpet that plays great, has fast, buttery smooth valves. I doubt anyone would bet significant money in a blind test that they would choose a Bach Strad C over the Chinese cheapie.

i have played the instrument from 3rd grade summer school, 1970, when i thought i would be a drummer. i have followed Paul from the jump, he seems like a lovely bloke. and this is totes on me but, it's nails on a chalkboard when it's pronounced /trəmˈbōn/ , sounding like the 'u' in 'fun' or 'bump' instead of properly, /trämˈbōn/ , with the 'o' sounding like 'romp' or 'stomp'.
it is a trombone, not a trumbone.

Concerning the slide...I couldn't help but notice that you did not clean the slide before playing the instrument. I'm sure it had some grinding powder in it that you should have washed out. When you applied lubricant you added just a tab at the top of the slide and not on the stockings. I kept thinking, "No wonder the slide grinds." Tone quality was fair. It is probably a Chinese trombone. I rented one for practice in Germany while my wife and I were there in 2015/16. The quality of the one I rented seemed to be pretty fair to me. In high school I played a King 2-B Liberty which I still have. My present trombone is a Gerhard Baier large bore trigger trombone made in Germany. I don't know how it would compare to a Shires model but it plays pretty well for me.

I'll say just one thing. Obviously, the Williams is better overall. Gorgeous, gorgeous, horn. Hands down. But that cheap Chinese bone has a massively open and resonant high C in first and high Db in second. Like, scrub out that scratchy slide with some brass polish and you could almost make a career on that high C and Db. The Williams is obviously a masterpiece in general and slots much better in every other partial, but it sounds comparatively below the pitch and chokey on that high C in first. And apart from that, yay for Williams! Lol

Obviously you are a great player and could probably get a great sound playing a hosepipe connected to a carboard box but the intonation on your pro horn was awful. I took the tones when you did octave leaps so not due to slide position and your custom bone was sharp on the upper register. Just saying. I often find that emperor's new clothes comes to mind with custom built instruments.

You're killing me with those gloves. I hate those damn gloves. Every year when a kid comes in with white gloves and a POS from China, I die a little inside. This year, first year ever, not a single white glove at any of my six schools. Yes!!!!!
As for your recording, I hear more warmth and resonance on your Williams, but it sounds like the biggest difference is that the slide on the Amazon doesn't move well. You can hear the bumps in your tone after the attacks, and you can see it in your face. Your embouchure is locked in and immovable on your Williams, but on your Amazon horn it looks like you're doing calisthenics and lifting weights with your face.

Its better to buy a used American or European -made horn, or Yamaha or even Jupiter. Quality used professional or reputable student models, from someone you know, a local store, or ebay, will get you a better horn than these Indian and Chinese models.

@@PaulTheTrombonist I started on a very used '57 6H and could not blame any mistakes on the horn. I also picked up a 1970's King Cleveland 605-F on Ebay and it sounds just like a 2B but with an F-attachment (I'll bet they used the same bells with different engraving). Kids with short arms, kids who can't reach past 5th position, would really benefit from something like that - small bores (.485-.500) with F. A 3B-F is great, but a LOT more expensive.

And by the way I'm sure slide on your trombone can be fixed probably is wrongly alignment but I guess good instrument repair tech would take another 200 for fixing it. Great videos and amazing skills. Good luck.

@@tuniox8914 Nice news, good stuff to read at 04.20 hrs before going back to sleep with a smile..
Starting kids playing is vital by hook or by crook. In the UK the system that worked since 1845 onwards is broken and being the Arts it doesn't matter and been in decline for 40 years.
A Philistine prime minister who had zero interest in the arts, working class culture, she had no awareness that culture existed outside the Westminster Bubble in central London.
Politicians closing heavy industry, coal, steel,, shipbuilding, vehicle production and destroying the millions of jobs that were the supply chain, everything lost forever. In particular the tradition of brass bands associated with heavy industry. The rundown of the army, navy, air force, marines and so many bands, the country is so empty of music and zero money for teachers.
Recession for two years and no money for the arts, gyms, youth clubs since 2010 after twelve years of deliberate Fake. Austerity to break everything good and uplifting in favour of Nothingness.
The UK never went for marching bands which is such a great culture and demanding discipline to make the music live, cheerleaders, parents, teachers, I take my hat off to the US and Canada plus other countries who absorbed the tradition.
Best wishes Paul, share your great talent and inspire others as you do beautifully. My second instrument was the trombone, an inspiring teacher Peter Davis, one of the best amateur trombone players from the fifties in the UK. Pete sadly died at the age oof 48 far to young but the gift of three years of teaching, age 13 to 16 lives on with me.
Brass bands in the UK are a section of three trombones, two tenors and a bass which complies with the rules controlling player numbers for the other great tradition of band contests.
My start in brass bands was the Salvation Army who didn't contest and unlimited player numbers which often topped out with five trombones. Four tenors and a bass making it a choir within each band, a brighter sound and composer's could split the 1st doubled, 2nd doubled, bass into a five part choir. More than symphony orchestras and contesting band's but wind bands can have bigger trombone sections.
Just to give some unique UK brass band history that changed in 1965. Bands pitch was A equals 452 Hz giving cornet's and trombones in particular a brighter. sound but that included the rest of the band, the horns, baritones (unique to British brass bands from 1850) euphoniums and tubas. The revised pitch in 1965 was concert pitch A = 440Hz to comply with the rest world.
I still have my Great Grandfather, George Wright's Bb tenor trombone from 1890. George was a miner who lived and worked in South Shields, County Durham, the north east of GB. Great Granddad must have had excellent taste in trombones as you have mentioned your Cousins Paul. Georges tenor was a Joseph Highams, a Manchester instrument maker and award
winner from various exhibitions around the world. Highams trombones were the choice of professional orchestras in the era of Edward Elgar.
Dennis Wick did ask to borrow the Highams which is a small bore trombone and to test a range of sackbut mouthpieces. I wasn't happy allowing the trombone which is my families only link with my Great Grandparents, seven great uncles which includes my Granddad, and seven half great uncles from Georges second marriage.
      Best wishes all.
