      Both of my bikes have combinations of Shimano and SRAM components. Don't believe the hype about needing the full groupset to get proper performance -- as long as they use standard sprocket spacing and chain width, the rest of the drivetrain parts are almost entirely interchangeable.

    Hello, what's the logic behind using bigger jockey wheels to reduce friction, and then placing a 10 tooth sprocket on the cassette?

    • @gmbntech
      @gmbntech  6 років тому +11

      A 10t sprocket increases the gear range quite significantly, but in reality will be the sprocket which is used least, so the gains from the larger jockey wheels should still be in effect.

    • @bNaVSK
      @bNaVSK 6 років тому +1

      GMBN Tech thanks for the answer. I agree with you on the overall efficiency gain, specially on a single ring system, where chainline is always an issue.

    • @travischapman6763
      @travischapman6763 6 років тому +5

      I feel like this is still counter intuitive. Larger wheels for less friction in a spot in the drivetrain which sees very little power with tiny cogs at an area which sees tons of power. This has always been a reason to stay 2x for me as the top 3 gears always feel awful to pedal. I'd rather run a 14-whatever giant gear with two chainrings to keep the same 500+% range. If your even lightly sprinting to 500 watts, I can't imagine that top gear distributing power any better than 100 watts per tooth.

    • @travischapman6763
      @travischapman6763 6 років тому +8

      I've used the ceramicspeed pulley argument on other threads as well. Same page. I remember racing 6 or 7 years ago when xc was just starting to convert their bikes to 10 speed 1x. I had an xt tripple up front and always beat them to the top. My chain wasn't dropping, either, and thats on rocky mountain trails.
      I still hold that the ubiquity of 1x has a lot more to do with SRAM noticing a trend, already not able to make a decent front mech, and dumping money into 1x PR instead of derailleur R&D.

    • @bNaVSK
      @bNaVSK 6 років тому +2

      Couldn't agree more! I just regred it became a norm a not an option. As for me, 26" and double ring will always make it easier on the climb, and more playful on the descents.

  • @AdamQueen
    @AdamQueen 6 років тому +2

    The rotor looks like a shuriken!! Although it also looks like an enhanced rotor design trickled down from road rotors.
    One important thing missing about the cassette is, it's not one piece unlike SRAM one. The smallest 4 cogs can be removed.
    It would be much better if the largest 3 cogs can also be disassembled for better repairability. (Maybe possible for next year XT?)
    The hub must be the highlight, slient ratchet design is super nice. Just want to know will Shimano trickle this hub tech to road hubs.

    • @parajuanjo

      Grease is for the hubs, either to slide in cartridge bearings or for cup and cone with ball bearings. I'd be shocked if that was specified for the freehub, maybe a touch on the pawls. Typically you don't want hub grease anywhere in the freehub. Your freehub is probably expensive so it's good to keep it oiled

    • @texstars1
      @texstars1 6 років тому +1

      Maybe I am wrong, but I always make a little noise when alone in the forest and mountains to warn animals that I am approaching. It can be a good thing.
      Animals do not want any contact with us natural born killers of everything and will be quickly gone if they hear us. They may attack if surprised or startled. My neighbour was attacked like this by a bear she stumbled across as she silently searched the forest for mushrooms.
      I unexpectedly came across a lone grey wolf once before it spotted me, and shooting off into the undergrowth. The mountain was covered in a cloud of dense, thick wet, cold fog cutting down on noise and my scent. It was, however, the cold and the wet that was my greatest danger. Foolishly I had not brought a warm waterproof jacket. It was night and I was lost.

    • @rickybonn
      @rickybonn 6 років тому +1

      It's funny. Chris King was working on silent hubs or a way to quiet a standard pawl system until customers became enamored by the angry bee sound. Since then, they have simply catered to the want. I have to admit, there is something primal about the noise and I like it. Kind of like a thrumming V8 engine..... is there really a point to the noise? No, but the irrational love still exists.

      I like Shimano cassettes, shifters & rear mechs...but will never use Shimano chains again - was using them in the late nineties but always broke them when I put any torque through them. I found SRAM chains to be stronger and always liked the power links, but the strongest chain I found was Rohloff (that thing was indestructible). Nowadays I use KMC, they're as strong as SRAM imo & the slotted ones with hollow pins are much lighter so a win/win for me (they come in pretty colours too). Nothing shifts like a Shimano cassette though, & I don't like any other shifters on the market so it'll be Shimano 'til I die for those parts.

    My question is: are all Centerlock rotors compatible with other brands?
    Can I mount Shimano xtr ice rotors with a magura 4 piston caliper/ DT Swiss system.

    An awesome piece of engineering!!!.... . I'm at the moment using an XTR groupset Di2 2x11 so I'm not sure if I would return to the mechanical system because the Di2 system is really flawless but I must admit I'm drooling at the great engineering put on this groupset!.

    14:38 Nice Hex bolts, this makes it easier, if you already got a Hex set,but it would be nice if they were the same size.

    I need to take my old hard tail apart so I can state the model, but I have had a silent, small increment freewheel since 1994 on my old Haro Vector V3. It is the original hub. SILENT is beautiful because like you said, tire grip and nature is all you here. If I need to be noisy I add a bell to my bike.

    Beautifully engineered now I just have to mortgage my house and to get the groupset.

    It seems that they went back from direct mount to traditional mount in the rear derailleur.

    Recently got a bike with the XTR groupset. Does anyone have issues with the chain coming off the chain ring when back peddling in 1st gear? And how do you fix it? I'm told it's normal but it can't be. A flagship groupset with a major flaw.

    Any info on wether they will make this electric?
    The 2x Di2 with one shifter seems really appealing.
    Also why didn’t they just launch this electronic from the get go? Are Shimano maybe working on wireless shifting?

    If I could run it?
    My monthly payment is about enough for the rear derailleur.
    But amm 2x11 I guess.
    I like those hubs tho.

    Hi Doddy, Does the free-stroke adjustment do anything now, or does it still have no effect? I don't think I've seen this addressed in any of the first-look reviews. Thanks for the great content.

      Frank Castle so why does it happen on every shimano crank

    • @parajuanjo
      @parajuanjo 6 років тому +1

      because nobody cares and their shoes rub on the cranks? seriously, I have 4 bikes with clipless pedals, and all cranks are in pristine condition. just pay atention to install the cleats properly so you don't rub the cranks with the inner side of the shoes and you will not wear off the cranks. other tip is to increase the release bolt tension of the pedals, so you will have less play on the cleat/free angle of the shoes.

    Id have to imagine the 3 largest gears being aluminum are for cost savings. It does get much stiffer and lighter than titanium.
