      As a mechanic, i hope this is where it stops.
      Most customers do not need 12 gears nor do they know how to use it effectively. On top of that, the amount of standards is kinda getting out of hand. There are 3 different I-Spec systems now, 3 different free wheels, I've lost count of all the different bottom brackets there are, 10, 11 and 12 speed systems are sold concurrently and so on. And that's just Shimano.
      I'm all for innovation, but its getting to much as of late. It really reminds me of the late 90ier/ early 2000s when manufacturers released new and revolutionary designs every year. Shimano Airlines! Inverted shifting! Dual Control! Oversized Centerlock! Axle mounted derailleurs!
      Five years later you couldn't get any spare parts anymore and everything thankfully became standardized again. I hope 12-spd is the end for now, because it's getting harder and harder to keep up with all these changes on a daily basis, never mind keeping all the frequently needed parts in store.
      Again I'm happier with my 11-spd Setup than any previous setup and I'll probably get the 12-spd once it has been established, but the industry really needs time to let it customers breathe for a bit.
      But what annoys me the most about these step by step "innovations" is the way they pretend they have changed everything. The 10-spd rear derailleur is basically the same as the 11-spd and I'll bet its the same with the 12-Spd one as the XTR can be used with 11 or 12 spd. You can use a 11-Spd rear derailleur with 10 by systems and vice versa (depending on the cassette size you can't use older 10-Spd models) but they still sell them separately. Same with most front derailleurs, if anybody still uses those ;) Just admit you only changed the width of the chain and sprockets and streamline your product variety. Offer one XT rear derailleur for 12 to 10-Spd (assuming the 12-Spd still uses the 10 spd ratio, which is very likely) and be done with it. Shimano did it with 9-Spd before, why not own up to it and do it again.
      Also FYI 9-Spd MTB rear derailleurs are basically the same a 10-Spd rear derailleurs for road bikes. Shimano has been doing this for years now and it's kinda annoying, that you have to stock multiple products, that are mostly redundant because they refuse to admit they are compatible.

      Just looks like they’ve just redesigned / reconfigured the old m8000 stuff and haven’t really improved the build quality. It still looks cheap and poorly built compared to SRAM’s stuff with cheap rattly plastic thumb shifters and the new brakes look exactly the same as my m8000 just with an extra clamp for lever flex. No mention of doing anything about the random bite point issues or what they’ve done to sort that. I’m keen to give it a try but I’ve been so disappointed with anything shimano I’ve bought over the last three or four years that I’m reluctant to give them any more money especially after being so impressed with SRAM’s gear since moving over. I’ll sit it out for a while see who ends up with the better product and see how well it holds up on my friends bikes.

      After I saw the news of the new XTR M9100 I was eagerly waiting for the XT release. Super stoked. However, I am probably not going to upgrade from my M8000 setup: it is just too much hassle for this kind of improvement.
      Also, I am pretty sold on SRAM's AXS system. I hope Shimano is going to roll out something similar: wireless, reliable and dependable on.

    I'd rather go with an Onyx rear hub for durability, instant engagement and true silence.

    Can you do a brake test.? Like stopping power from control speed? A proper brake test and not "trail" brake test. It would be good to see. I haven't seen any videos of actual brake comparison. Test it like how journalists test car brakes. Controlled test. Cheers

    • @aljowen
      @aljowen 5 років тому +2

      For a single braking run they will all stop you just fine providing they are set up and installed correctly. The limiting factor is your tyres, and potentially suspension depending on the terrain. There are benefits to more expensive brakes (more adjustable, better feel, easier maintenance, less fade etc), but the technology is mature enough that even entry level hydraulic brakes should be able to lock up on most surfaces.
      If you do need more power, getting bigger rotors is generally a good option, and can have a bigger effect on stopping power than upgrading the brakes themselves.

    • @robivlahov
      @robivlahov 4 роки тому

      It's all in the tires ,suspension aaand brake feel and modulation. All brakes can lock the wheel ,but with some it's easier to control than with others . I love my slx m675s , love friends 4 pot zees even more, people say sram has better modulation , but I found most sram brakes have a "click" where they engage strongly , maybe I'm retarded but shimanos seem easier to control to me ...

    • @hobmarg
      @hobmarg 5 років тому +6

      @@henryfreund_ I have. NX Eagle cassette is ridiculously heavy to the point you can actually feel the impact on rear wheel acceleration and suspension performance. GX Eagle is acceptable for the price (but still $$) however chainline and cable tension is finnicky. Guide brakes, especially Guide R and RS issues are well documented. Codes are OK but Guides are trash compared to XT especially for the price. The only reason SRAM is so prevalent is because of their OEM build kit packaging that includes RockShox suspension and the also terribad Reverb dropper. It's easy and cost efficient for product managers for bike companies to spec all SRAM/RockShox so they do even when Shimano (and arguably Fox) are superior price/performance products.

      usual sponsored mechanic bullshit trotted out about how wonderful cup and cone are - yes if you have nothing to do all day except shoot a couple of videos and maintain your bikes but a pain in the butt for the general public. I would say it was because he has to follow the shimano marketing bollocks for this video but he regularly trots out crap like this - Henry is a much more real world mechanic thinking about people who actually buy and own this stuff rather than living in the rarefied world where everything is a marketing 'test' freebie and you can move on before you actually wear the stuff out

    • @gmbntech
      @gmbntech  5 років тому +1

      Both cup and cone and sealed cartridge have their benefits. If a cup and cone system is taken care of properly it can last a very long time. There are cup and cone hubs still running on bikes from over 100 years ago. Sealed cartridge bearings are also good as they can be easily replaced and or upgraded from the factory specification, however you can only do this so many times before the hub shell and or axle has been compromised.

    • @drewbarrow5670
      @drewbarrow5670 5 років тому +1

      @@gmbntech why spend time and money on taking care of cup and cones while you can use sealed cartridge bearings without any tinkering and fuss? I had hubs with cartridge beatings which I used 20 000 + kilometres without any service or care. Sold to a new owner and now have a new bike with DT Swiss 240s and I'm sure they will last much more than 20 000 kilometres and I don't have to bother about any service and fixing, I will ride and shred not "take care of hubs" or spend time and money on fixing.

    • @benasquith26
      @benasquith26 5 років тому

      They make chains thinner and say that it's better because it's lighter. The reason why they actually make it thinner is because it's more likely going to snap so the consumer has to buy another chain, making Shimano more money.

    • @RunThatRC
      @RunThatRC 5 років тому +1

      They actually have to make the chains that way so they can space and fit the 12 gears properly for smooth engagement. More gears with less space in between equals thinner diameter chain. Unfortunately thinner means less durable but thats the tradeoff for more gears.

    At around 5:15 you state that hyperglide+ now allows powering through when upshifting. But according to what I've read, it's exactly the opposite, as this was already the case with hyperglide. It's the plus version that now allows you to do the same when downshifting (from small to big cog).
    Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds more logical, as it seems to be the more difficult technical feat to achieve.

Then the mail pivot of my slx rear mech corroded and the pulley cage no longer moved. Also, 3 xt 12spd shifters fail on me. On all three, one on the small springs that drives the shifts to easier gear/bigger cog breaks, then they can only shift to harder gears. Shimano has warrantied every I have listed, no questions asked. I do ride way more than most(endurance mtb racing is my thing) but this has been shocking to me, have had 11spd xt everything for years with zero issues. Think in the next year or two we'll start seeing massive recalls on all the 12spd parts as the average riders catch up with the mileage I put on my stuff.

    When fitting a 1x M9100 XTR chainring to a 1x M8100 XT or M7100 SLX crankarm, which chainring lockring nut should be used?
    According to Shimano documents, the XTR crankset uses a different lockring than the XT/SLX. Is this specific to variances in the crankarms or the chainring?
    XTR lockring part number Y1X098050
    XT/SLX lockring part number Y0J698060
    The XTR lockring is specified as being compatible with the XT/SLX components, yet it specifically states in the manual (and on the lockring itself) that the XT/SLX lock ring included with the XT crankarm is "XT/SLX ONLY"... XT/SLX crankarm only or XT/SLX chainring only?
    Do I need an XTR lockring to run an XTR chainring on an XT crank?

    I went with the full groupset and the hub is terrible. Sounds like 3 completely different hubs depending on the terrain/speed. Ranges from ridiculously loud to quiet and everything in between but never consistent. The constantly changing pitch takes your attention off of the trail. Took it back multiple times, had it replaced with no improvement....Eventually I was told ‘officially’ that Shimano realizes it has noise issues but it doesn’t affect the performance of the hub. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".
