It was cool to see the portion of the ICW that we missed by taking the Dismal Swamp. I didn't realize there was a lock on the ICW in that section. There were two on the swamp. Hope you guys are hunkering down somewhere protected today. It is the windiest day we've seen in Florida since we got here.
Excellent video; loving watching your adventure! The fact that you had to overcome major adversity to get where you are at only makes the accomplishment that much greater. Well done guys!
This video was bought to you by the word 'thankful', and the letter 'eh?'. :) I don't think I've seen another sailing video so profuse with gratitude. Nice to hear.
I don't know if anyone else would find it interesting but I'd love if you guys showed your route through the ICW once you get to Florida. I'm excited to see what you two get up to once you reach the Bahamas.
Did you stay in the ditch the whole way, or take a few shortcuts outside to make better time? With a Catalina 30 you definitely didn't need to go outside for any of the bridges. We air draft just under 50' so we didn't have any issues either, or with shoaling either as we only draft 4'3" in the water. We only bumped bottom a couple of times getting in and out of a few sketchy anchorages at low tide.
You folks are so brave. I think you two are modern day adventures. I love Norfolk. What a trip Huh? Thank you for your videos. Totally cool sailors. Stay dry.
Wes & Kate...it's so great to have your videos rolling again...we sure missed you !!!! Take us back to the Bahamas !!! We're looking fwd to meeting you in person one day...as we're planning to cast off in Aug 2020 to head south from Lake St Clair. Cheers, Paul, Mary & Lexy (the miniature schnauzer) SV Winpipe.
Really enjoy your videos and I admire your perseverance and willingness to achieve your goals. Having said that, if you two don't get your butts to some Bahama-blue water and bright sunshine soon, I'm going to lose my mind! I have plenty of gloomy winter here in Chicago for crying out loud, lol. Safe travels team.
I like the way you edit your videos. You show just a glimpse of the surrounding area and scenery, with 90% the video showing your face. Keep up the good work.
Took the AICW in winter 2017 in January - February. Dismal Swamp was closed for dredging due to erosion from hurricanes so we continued down the Virginia Cut. Weather was warm leaving Hampton, VA but we caught a blizzard once we arrived in Coinjock VA. See photos.app.goo.gl/gWqxy9NsJrgFSD1T9
Those hovercraft are called LCAC's (Landing Craft, Air Cushioned). I rode them a few times getting on and off ship in 2006/7 from the beach at Camp Lejeune. If you think they're loud now, you should hear them from the well deck of a ship when they come in lol. Kinda fun really. Great vid, sail safe!
Next time you're in Great Bridge, there's a great grocery and small town within walking distance just to the right over the bridge (if you're heading southbound) I used to live in that there years ago when there was nothing there at all. Also, in Pongo there used to be a really great restaurant named Captain Georges right on the water on the left side at a bridge. There's a place to dock there or dinghy in and the seafood buffet is simply amazing just anything you could want seafood wise plus they have regular food too! And don't forget to leave room for desserts because they're to die for!!! I really miss living down there. I lived there in Great Bridge while serving in the Navy.
Been following you both since the first trip. The first sail. The engine troubles if I recall right? Wasn't there a bit of a sunburn too? Enjoying them still. Looking forward to your adventure ahead. Thanks for the work putting yourselves out there. Way to show grit!
I know it's way too late, but next time the better free dock in Portsmouth is about a quarter mile south of the one you saw. It's in a small square basin, room for 5 boats maybe.
Hey wes , at the time of my watching this it is 25 degrees at night. Tomorrow night we are going to get a little snow, then on sunday we are in for a Major Storm Snow ICE, and freezing rain, then on monday it slated to be around 10 to 15 degrees as a high. TAKE ME WITH YOU !!!!
I live close to the water way and cross it 2 times daily. Wish I knew when you guys were coming through, I would at least cheer you on, Or better yet buy you a drink at Captain Archie's. Right by the swing bridge in North Myrtle Beach SC
Great vid as always. You have the right attitude. It doesnt matter whether you are sailing or powering, you are on the water and exploring. What could be better. The ICW is an unbelievable resource. Enjoy!
I see Kate wearing a Salus PFD. I think it is the coastal version, which is what I use. I love mine and find it even more comfortable than my son’s Mustang deluxe inflatable. It is really well made. What do you’all think of yours?
We both enjoyed them, Kate still does. However I found that just having the zipper as the closing point is prone to failure which could be bad. My Salus zipper has failed and I have not used it since, also would not want that zipper to fail when needed.
With our boat ashore in NC, it is a pleasure to see the familiar scenery go by as you head into the ICW, almost like we were there. Taking the Dismal route? How long ago was this passage?
We went great bridge toward coinjock, but if we are ever back I would be inclined to do dismal swamp. It was just a long cold journey down, went with the easier lock and less distance easier stops, familiar route, we weren't messing around!
You should never refill you fuel tanks on the cockpit floor! Fumes can travel down and explode next time you start the stove! I've worked with people who has told me real horror stories about boats exploding because of this. Please, be careful!
I'm glad you both are back to sailing! I know that y'all had some bumps along the way but I love how y'all never gave up on your dreams of sailing it is very inspiring to see how determined you both are... I can't wait to watch your vlogs and your adventures! Be safe and live each day like its the last on Earth.
I like your new boat and it is very good that you can have a bimini and stand right up like that.

Haven’t seen Norfolk in a bunch of years! Cool to see these old stomping grounds again!
You should be doing it for you, not for us. Im thankful for you are sharing this with us.
Enjoy the video as always. One of these days, I’ll see the ICW!! Greetings from Maine!⛄️
Excellent video; loving watching your adventure! The fact that you had to overcome major adversity to get where you are at only makes the accomplishment that much greater. Well done guys!

Those things are crazy!
A nice video, keep pumping them out now that you have some footage.
I am an old fart. Will be retiring soon. Watch Wicked Salty from the beginning. Dude, you should do a Catalina 30 review within 2 years. Thanks.

You guys are motivating me to put down the art projects and get to work on the boat 😁

how far behind are these videos? Does not matter that much but helps to know date of video. Thanks for sharing.
Still leaves on the trees.
They were in Cape May NJ November 10th. I don't know how long they stayed before moving on, so probably mid-late November.
They were in St. Augustine last Thursday.
I think we arrived in Norfolk in December
