MY EXPENSES AS A JUNIOR DOCTOR | How Much I Spend As 26 Year Old Doctor (In The UK)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 чер 2024
- Hey guys, I recently made a video where I broke down my payslip and how much I earn as a junior doctor in the UK - from this I had lots of questions asking about my expenses as a doctor. In this video, I break down how much I spend as a UK doctor, I detail most of my big expenses and talk about how much I could be saving monthly.
These expenses include rent, car related costs, professional medical expenses, bills and my social expenses. Towards the end of the video I look at how much I could save by comparing my spending to my take home monthly pay.

⚡️About Another Indian Doctor
My name is Kiran and I'm a junior doctor (GP trainee) and comedian. Finding information about your health can be overwhelming, boring and unreliable as you scroll through pages of sites trying to sell you essential oils to cure that pain in your elbow. I'm hoping to empower people to understand more about their health, but also to make it easy and fun to watch. I hope you enjoy my videos and that they can help you achieve a different outlook on your health and I'd love to hear from you on Instagram (@anotherindiandoctor).

It's not often that you find videos like these which are very transparent when it comes to monthly expenses and savings per month. Thank you for making it, it's quite informative. Cheers!
Thanks Hridhay, it was also interesting for me to make so I’m glad you find it useful! Let me know if there is anything else you’d be interested in seeing

You know I just finished watching an Ali Abdaal video and I'm getting that same feeling of 'honesty' and 'being upfront'. I really enjoyed watching this video and it taught me something for my own UA-cam channel. Keep up the great work, Im sure this channel will blow up soon!
Thanks man, I really appreciate this comment. I spend a lot of time making these videos so these comments are so great to read! Stay safe

Thanks for this Kiran. I have really enjoyed it. I will be moving to Manchester end of the year from overseas. This video was very informative as my take home pay is exactly as yours. I now have a rough idea on how my expenses would look like. Thanks
Randomly popped on my watch page, doctors don't really earn a lot in the UK or anywhere in general. But I still are definitely considering the NHS & UK, because of the quality of life medics have there. Great video and very transparent.
Thanks Lwazi! Which country are you from?
@@Kiran.Morjaria South Africa.
Lol
This video was much needed for all Indian doctors planning to go to UK later

When i was 25 i made roughly around usd 35k per month, and it was 6 years ago. Never been good in formal education, my grade is always low but im very grateful to be where im at rn. I'm entrepreneur got no other choice except to do whatever u can lol if u're in my shoes. But thanks for the information my gf is a junior doctor in CA its pretty similar with yours in UK
Appreciate you sharing!
Hi Kiran thank you for making such an informative video.
I have got a question. If after my internship at my country,I get GMC registration via MRCProute instead of PLAB then which training rank will I fall into like FY,CT,ST(1-8)?
I’m actually not sure - sorry I can’t help with this! Thanks for watching
I have been watching your videos recently, and as you are staying in Manchester could you please guide as regarding air B and B Costs.i am planning to come to Manchester from India for 2 weeks, for my daughter’s treatment at OT Manchester as she has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
It would be very helpful.
Lovely video
Thank you!
Wow your doing brilliantly, only 26 look how much you have achieved in your young life. Well done and keep happy
Thanks Lesley 😁😁
I am not a doctor but really enjoyed this video.
Thanks.
Thanks dude
Nice video Dr Kiran.
Thanks!
Thank you for the informative video. I wanted to ask if there is any fees for the training program? For example pg in India is quite costly, is there any fees for such in UK?
No fees for training but you have to pay to sit exams and an annual fee for GMC registration (but this is not expensive)
i actually took notes bc GK of life right there.
Nice
Now that I have seen the other side of the equation - your expenses - I realise that your pay isn’t as low as I have thought after watching your last video.
Renting a 2-bedroom flat for £1,040, and a car parking space for £60? I’m paying HK$24,000 (roughly £2,400) for my 2-bedroom flat and HK$4,000/£400 for a car parking space every month!
Thanks again for your sharing!
Thanks to you for sharing too, that's interesting! In London prices are similar to what you're paying, in the north of England things are cheaper for sure
Thank u for inspiring me to become a doctor 😊 😃 😀 😄 😁
Awesome 👏
How old are you and which country?
Hi Thank you so much for your video. I am currently applying to work as an FY1 in 2023.
May I ask how much did the work VISA costs when you applied for it?
And in your take home pay, was it after income tax and national insurance?
Hey I’ve got no idea sorry, and yes take home pay is after income tax/NI
as someone living in london this makes me want to move to manchester haha
so cheap!!!
Come and move here, the centre has actually changed into a mini affordable London
are the courses for residents always paid by the hospitals or is it special for your deanery? thanks for the detailed video! helped me a lot!
Not always, my deanery has unlimited study budget for doctors in training so all the courses are free, but it varies!
what did you do after a levels and what age did u start n how long did it take u to be a doctor
Where did you buy the lamp in the back? It’s sick
Cheers Ven, I'm actually not sure we've had it for ages!
Nice video - but just wondering why you have not included your Royal College fees in your monthly payments? As that’s often a significant amount of money.
Good point, should have included this as it's hella expensive
Hi 👋 could you please make an updated video for 2024 ? As after the cost of living crisis the expenses might have increased drastically and this is before that time
My expenses would be through the roof now

Eyyy thank you
Hey Kiren throw in your IG handle if you dont mind😂
Sir please make a video about how to be a doctor in UK...I mean after MBBS what one has to do to get a job in UK
It's already on UA-cam if you want you can watch it
Hello, is this calculation from total salary of month or after monthly tax deduction?
What camera do you use pls? And how do you get such good quality? :)
I use a canon G7X mkii - thank you 😁
I'm imagining how much you could save if you had a bike instead. Is cycling viable where you live?
That’s actually a great idea, for sure it would be. But the convenience of having a car, to be able to visit friends and family and generally leave later is so good. Also I enjoy driving (although agreed it’s a massive expense).
Do you have a more recent update? It's one thing for so many junior docs to moan about their wages, but they just at the start of a career path that will lead multiplies of their current income.
High salaries come with more experience and knowledge, no matter what field you work in or how highly qualified you may be. You still need to put in the work in the actual workplace.
Hi Kiran,
May I ask how much your groceries expenses increased in the past months ? 100 pounds per person seems very little to me. I live in Glasgow.
Cheers
It's probably still pretty similar to this?
Love your channel, just matter of fact information, not the usual 'oh look at me I'm a doctor, I'm so amazing BS'.
Man this is quite insightful. Though by comparison, London is somehow nearly twice as expensive 😓
Rent is nearly twice even in moderately priced suburbs, food (takeaway/delivery/eating out) is generally considerably more expensive too.
Issue with housing in my case is that the cheaper stuff is usually 45 min- 1 hr away from work. That is back breaking to do twice a day. Either that, or you end up staying in dodgy parts of town, which isn’t the safest thing to do.
Yeah I’ve heard this, that even with paying the higher rent in London it’s so big that there’s still a commute!
Thanks for sharing dude
After you graduated how many years did of training did you do to start working
5 years at med school and then start working. I’ve worked for 4 years post graduation
Can you make more gp vidoeos in training thanks
What specifically ?
Good vid bro can u tell me if doctors coming to uk can have a good house and car and life comfortably by atleast 35yrs of age?
Hey man, thanks for the comment and definitely. As a doctor in the UK you have a really good quality of life, and should have decent savings by age 35!
Thank u😊
I will be in Manchester soon but I dont want to live in CBD which places do you recommend
Didsbury!
Manz taking £1.3K and bagged 1K subs that’s my doc right there💯💯💯💯
Thanks man!
Hey there i am a junior doc here in india, i have a family , want guidance for uk
your car expenses missed off the depreciation and service costs, road tax etc.
kinda curious why do u need a car if u live in the city centre or near it?
To get to the hospital it’s much easier, also for going home, going shopping and travelling to comedy gigs
Hi kiran good video!
I have a question regarding psychiatry training in the UK, if possible please give me a response..
I have a question regarding psychiatry training, pls give me a response if possible.
Is it true that during core training or Speciality training , trainees are required to move from one region to another every 6 months ? Or can we just choose a town/city and get the three years of training in the same place itself but maybe in different medical centres every 6 mnths?
Also does ur MSRA score decide where u get placed? Like for eg. if i have a higher M SRA score, can i choose where i want to get trained?
There’s confusion regarding this. Please throw some light🥹
How have u managed to stay in Manchester throughout ur core training? Weren’t u asked to move regions/cities?
So sorry it's taken so long, but
- a higher MSRA score will give you priority over where you have ranked, so better score = more likely to get an area that you want
- for psychiatry you will move around a region, some regions are big and you need to move, some are smaller and you can commute
For GP training (which is what I did) you're in one place for the whole three years! So no moving thankfully
@@Kiran.Morjaria Thanks for the response 😊
We all need a piggy bank for a car. Around 8000 every 4 years (assuming not a really expensive car?), that's 2000 a year, or 166 a month... or 5 pound a day.😂 It's so expensive having a car.
After mbbs from India. After clearing plab nd all exams can I only study as a core trainee and then return to India? Is that degree from UK valid in India?
Yes. When you finish your core training you usually also finish your MRCP/MRCS or which ever you are enrolled in that's equivalent to getting apg in India
How was ur experience of residency in UK ?
@badusha thahir... So core training consists of 3-4 yrs right?
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
At age of 26 ,u earning working so early, then when u get in medicine at age of 16?
Hi dear. I am planning to work in the UK after my MRCP. So what kind of salary can i expect ( after deducting taxes) if i join there after MRCP? What post will i be eligible for?
SHO, and around £50k
Before tax
What is the fee for fy1 student for international students
no fee
What wud an SHO earn just after plab 2 .
Around £40,000 per year
Did you enter gp training or in fy2 ??
Foundation and then GPST
50 30 20, works for me
How much a doctor would be earning during
1. FY2
2. CT
3. ST
??
Hey Bhaargav, approximately:
FY2 - £40,000-45,000 (I was on £44k)
CT/GPST - £45-55,000 (I’m on £49,700)
ST - up to around £70,000 (slowly increases from ST3-7)
@@Kiran.Morjaria Thank you for the reply doc😇
Take home money would be just 70% of it right??
@@bhaargavanand7928 No worries man, make sure you’re subscribed and notifications on as I’ve got a good one coming out tomorrow! After Tax, NI, Loans, Pension it’s usually around 60%

Yes!
What do you think about the future of doctors in 2050? Many studies tells that robots will replace doctors . What's your opinion sir ? Please answer the question.
There are so many things Doctor may be able to do, but many they won’t be able to do (mostly communication based which is a huge part of the job), so I think they’ll help but not replace
Kiran do you pay council tax?
Yes! It's in the video under 'Bills', about £160 per month
