HOW TO EARN £100,000 AS A NEW DOCTOR (AND HOW TO FIND WORK AS A LOCUM DOCTOR)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 чер 2024
- Hey team, in today's video we're looking at how NEW doctors can earn £100,000. It might sound too good to be true, but it is possible to earn up to £100,000 as a new doctor by working as a locum in the role of an SHO.
In this video I'm explaining what locum doctors are, how to become a locum doctor and some of the disadvantages of this lucrative role.
I've found that this is a cryptic topic that lots of medics don't talk about, and when I started work as a locum this lucrative, flexible path was not easily accesible. I thought I would make a video for aspiring doctors about how to practically work as a locum and to earn more.
So why isn't evey new doctor doing this? The truth is there are some disadvantages too. These include the fact that there is less job security and no career progression, although flexible and with good immediate earning potential.

The intro cracked me😂
Aha thanks Dr Gil, did you fall for it? 😂
I just thought... cover blown, sneak away sneakily.
@@Kiran.Morjaria I actually did, I felt attacked😂😂😂
Same here😂😂😂
@@Kiran.Morjaria can you mention some locum agencies please that'll be helpful.
This was great.
It's so frustrating that I can spend months applying directly for trust grade non-training positions in hospitals that dont really pay you much and keep getting knocked back. Then as soon as I sign up for an agency I'm snapped up, got a place and paid twice as much. Please, pay me less!
It really doesn't make sense at all, you would have thought that they would be willing to pay more people directly but for some reason work always seems to go to the agency. Thanks for the comment!
The information you gave that you can work as an agency doctor is incredible.Work according to your availability and earn loads.Great video!👍👍
Thanks Kanchan, it’s something that isn’t often explained so I thought I would make it easier to understand!
Thank you for making this so clear! I had no clue about Locum til now, but this video is super informative!
Thanks Varija, glad you thought so. It’s such a cryptic thing that people don’t really talk about so I thought I would make it clearer !
@@Kiran.Morjaria Definitely helps! Great video :)
Great video, Doc! Keep 'em comin! 🥳
Thanks Padayon ✌🏽
Thanks for that video! Incredibly useful, from what I've watched from other youtubers I was thinking that it is hard to be a locum doctor, I had no clue there was such shortage. And those figures!! Absolutely crazy! In a week you were approximately earning the money you earned for a whole month as an FY1. Now I understand why a lot of people do an FY3, this is really lucrative as you say. That's one of the pros of working in the UK, that huge flexibility!
For sure it’s so flexible and it seems to be the thing that everyone is doing at the moment - thank you for the comment
Are you working in the UK?
Fab video, you’re going to go far on UA-cam! X
Thanks Tilly, that really means a lot!
I have just recently left the idea of doing computer science and will be doing an access course to go into medicine, this video was very helpful and informative and most importantly very digestible many of these videos dont get to the point and start talking about too many things at once I also really like your presentation, you speak very clearly and concisely you just got a new subscriber :)

Hey doc!! Thanks for all ur videos!! Please more posts on gp training!! So if you have a full time training job then u have time in weekends and from after days shift from 5 pm to tge next morning?
Yeah that’s right!
Great video Dr, do you think as a GP locum in the next 15 years i will find shifts to work?
Keep up the good work!
Yes
Iove your video
Hey. First of all, very nice video! Your editing is nice and crisp and I like how you present the information. This video reminded me of another video I saw which talked about this same topic.... Am I correct in assuming that there will be a collab soon with That Medic? ;)
Well I wanted to ask something. You told about locum junior docs and how they are necessary due to the immense amount of work that is there. But if there are less junior doctors, then wont there be less consultants as well? Do consultants also do locum work like this with increased per hour pay? ( Of course depending on their specialty's availability). Surely there must be lot of shifts like that since consultants are the one who generally decide course of treatment in hospitals :I
I’d love to but I think he’s a different league at the moment!
I’m referring to locum ‘SHO’ doctors although I should have clarified this. Consultants can do locum shifts, paid at an even higher rate than normal consultant shifts (can get £100/hr as a locum consultant)
@@Kiran.Morjaria I think you are also up in the game! Your subs will definitely improve :).
By the way, are these locum shifts for consultants available in equal volumes as compared to SHO locum shifts? Like I wonder if they are as 'easy' to find as SHO jobs. After all, there are more junior doctors than consultants in any hospital.
You're the Cutiest doc on UA-cam❤
Aha that’s very kind!
Great video Koran! Can you get into Locum job positions after finishing the 1st foundation year?
Yes you can!
Great vid, could you do a video on locum/partner/salaried salaries for GPs? As well as private potential for medical/surgical consultants? Would be very interesting.
I can look into this for sure but would have to do some research as I’m not yet at that stage of my career! Thanks for the comment
Thanks for the video it was fab! How do you go about finding out the locum agencies that have the best connections to hospitals
The best way is by speaking to people who work in those hospitals tbh, but it’s not always easy. Second best is to speak to agencies and see where they have connections
Thanks Teresa
Can you make a video about the complete training in UK from a Junior Doctor up to a consultant
Hey London, for sure I can do this! I have a video that explains some of this called ‘The FY3 Year’ so check that one out !
I now know how you could afford that Chanel coffee table book!😂 Great vid again!🔥
Great spot, it’s my fiancé’s book - I’m eternally scared I’m going to spill my coffee on it
What does the “Primary Medical Qualification “ means?
Does it means “Alevels”?
Hi Kiran really liked your video. Just a question can we work as both a SHO and locum on off days?
So you work as locum at the level of an SHO
Hi! Thanks for a very informative video!
I’m an IMG and I’m joining the NHS at a CT1 level pay, for a non-training job. I just had one question. If I leave the NHS at some point to join a locum agency, let’s say for a year, will I have any problems getting back into the NHS for a training program in the future?
Thanks
No I don't think you will!
They had us in the first half( intro)
Got you!
Hi, this was a great video. Quick question, what are your thoughts on Locuming and using that as investment source for properties/ getting on the property ladder?. Locum like 3 days a week 12 hour shifts and then spend the rest of the day working on your houses and renting them out?
This is a really good idea for a long term investment plan!
Consider though that you’d be earning over £50k so taxed 40% on rental income
Can you work as a locum doctor while your in a training program? Is it allowed?
Matter of fact, that’s why I’m here 🙂
Haha appreciate the honesty
Great video!!Are locum doctor and non training doctors the same?
Hey, locum doctors are not the same as non-training doctors. Most junior non training doctors are employed as ‘clinical fellows’ so more security, but pay similar to FY2 level
Hi , I was just wondering , can you easily get back into training after a year of locus work? eg. you do FY1-2 and the "FY3" as a locus doctor would it be easy to return to training to become a surgeon ? many thanks
Yes for sure, but the more years out you take the more difficult it can become - but one or two years out is no problem at all
It would be of great help If you could kindly explain how do you adjust to new surroundings while doing a locum shift??
Hey Shreeya, generally you should have an induction where you meet people first before working there and get explained safety procedures (that's the way it should be)
@@Kiran.Morjaria ohk thanks ✌🏻 keep up the good work👍

Hey man! Great work and great video, But I need an advice what would you suggest me as an international IMG -USMLE or UK PLAB. Where do you think its better to work not just in money aspect but everything.
Hey man it completely depends, the systems are so different. I have experience in working in the UK which I'd recommend but I've never worked as a doctor in America. As far as I am aware, the hours are longer but the pay is better but you've got the issue of health insurance too
Thanks, appreciated! But over all where it would be better to do the residency? UK or USA?
@@faizanahmed5368 If you've 15-20 lacs which are required for this whole USMLE process plus you are confident enough that u'll hack the interviews.. then in my opinion, residency in US is a better option for long term.
Hey Dr. Kiran in your contract for a locum job is it indicated whether they can terminate your contract at any time? Or are they always at will to terminate it whenever?
It depends on the deal you have, sometimes they can terminate whenever I actually had an agreement that I required 1 month notice
@@Kiran.Morjaria thank you!😁
Can you mix salaried and locum work? For example pick up evening weekends for extra money
Yes you can do exactly what you have described (it is tiring af though)
Awesome videos... Could you please make on Income tax savings and tax reliefs for doctors in the UK???
Great idea, thanks John
@@Kiran.Morjaria..Hopefully joining the NHS after the MRCEM july OSCE as a Specialty Registrar... Taxes seem to be a whole new ball game in the UK.. Hopefully will learn to save a few quick bucks
Hi I wonder your thoughts about which places in the Uk(apart from London) will be possibly lack of locum positions/shifts in the near future? 3-5 years from now? cities or generally speaking, parts such as south, midlands or north or wales etc . I am asking it because I am an IMG who is interested in Locum and choosing a city is important for possible future situations of mine. Thank you.
Generally more shifts are available in undersubscribed areas, these are usually more rural areas & outside of cities. However in the next 5 years there will continue to be locum shifts everywhere
Could you please tell me the hourly rate a locum consultant would usually get. Also can any consultant get into the private practice and be expected to get paid or is it like you have to build your reputation over a lot of years for people to slowly start coming to you, like a company?
Usually need NHS experience for a number of years

Wanted to know if we get CoS to work as locum?
And how to know about agencies? Could you suggest some?

Hey man, I'm a UK graduate so I'm not sure about COS, I'm not sure you can but you should look into it.
I've used a few and it depends what area you're in, the one I used the most was called "Holt Doctors".
Can you be a locum doctor after your specialist training? Also how is the pay for psychiatric locms
You can and you will be paid even more. I'm not sure about psychiatric locums specifically but locum consultants can be paid upwards of £100/hour

Do you have to pay VAT when you go via an agency as opposed to going direct?
It’s the same, but you have to file your own taxes etc
Also how much would an emergency medicine doctor in their ct be expected to paid as a locum per hour?
Usually around £50

Bro two things !
How much tax did you pay per week? Like can we see the payslip etc?
Also, did you find the locum work yourself or through an agency?
Hey Imran, I paid 20% PAYE and then NI/pension. So overall about 1/3 of my wage went on taxes/deductions. I worked through an agency because the rates were higher and I didn’t know anyone in the hospital before that to ask about shifts! What level are you at?
@@Kiran.Morjaria thanks for getting back. I always thought if you earned over 50k, you had to pay 40% of whatever you are making about 50k (20% up to 50k and 40% on above 50k)
Did the Agency charge you any fees or commission?
I am only a second year medical school. I am just trying to make some future plans lol (eager)
@@zealmeme so yes you’re right, but I didn’t work for the whole year. I worked for 4 months and then went away travelling so didn’t reach the new threshold. When you earn over 50k you pay 40% tax, but only on the amount over 50k that you have earned. The rest is still taxed at 20%
I’m looking to locum as FY1. Is this feasible? And can you share which agencies you used please...
FY1 doctors can only locum in the hospital they work at and with the internal bank. I’m making a video soon about how to choose a locum agency so keep an eye on the channel!
@@Kiran.Morjaria thanks! This is really helpful as I am an EU graduate and thought I would start at FY1 Locum. It seems I'm not getting the jobs which is puzzling to me as I thought the NHS always has doctor shortages :/

How do the earnings of a locum dr at £45 per hour compare to a fully qualified consultant. Let’s say yearly? As I thought consultants earn around 80k-100k which seems simmilar to a locum but skips all the training years
Great question, they’re similar to be honest. However if you work as a locum consultant that’s a different ball game 💰 or you can enter private practice which is even more lucrative!

If you locum in surgery, are you destined to be spending your time covering the wards or do you actually get to scrub in?
It depends, if you’re taking off shifts then definitely you’ll be stuck on the wards. If you’re on a full rota at a good hospital you will get theatre time but those jobs are much harder to come by

@@Kiran.Morjaria okay cool i think I understand you now.Tier 2 visa is renewed by your employers right ?

Hi there,
We currently live in the UK (London) and we moved here 5 years ago.
My wife worked as a doctor in Brazil and in order to start her career as a doctor here in the UK, she had to pass some exams, which she has successfully done.
At the moment, she is having enormous difficulty getting an interview and it seems that the main reason for rejection is the fact that she has no previous experience in the NHS.
I would like to know if you offer any kind of coaching in this regard? We wouldn't mind paying for the service of course. Thanks
Thanks
Hey Murillo, I don’t specifically have any coaching on this regard. I can only suggest applying for a less senior position as a doctor so that she can get the NHS experience and then work at the level she was at before once she’s more settled in the system
