  • Jay Jay is an all wood Dudley Dix design Cape Henry 21. We first spotted her racing off Yarmouth in the OGA regatta and wow she turned heads. Owner Brian Johnson showed us around this classic and told how he took more than three years to build her in the garage of his Essex home. Copyrights Bob Aylott, My Classic Boat, Brian Johnson, Dudley Dix and music The Green Orbs. What a fabulous series of videos. Great people, great boats, and proper talk. None of that TV documentary fakery nonsense.
    Total joy to watch.

    That's one of the loveliest boats on Earth. It's got a very useful wall down the centre to keep the girlfriend on her side and so ensure the longevity of the relationship. You can add the engine from a Dassault mk.1 Mirage to help win races...Cheerio!

    Thanks so much for gathering footage of yourself inside the cabin. For some reason this is something that most people neglect to do. But it's extremely important because potential buyers like myself absolutely need a sense of scale when considering the purchase of a particular sailboat because they want to know how much available space is down below. That being said, your boat is quite lovely. And thanks for sharing. Cheers!

    "Go buy a house with a checklist of items and that makes your decision" .. ha ha, maybe 40 years ago. Now your decision is made for you by price low enough and not being out-bid by 10 other buyers. Awesome boat! Extremely impressive. Probably only a few people in the world can build their own sea-worthy boat, just as a weekend project. Outstanding!

    Love it...grew up on the water in New England- commercial fishing boats in the family- but for the past few years been getting a hankering to get back into boating. Never did anything like this before- Intriguing. I will start on dinghy sail boating, and if this takes 3+ years. I can plan on 5, since I take longer than the average to build anything. My Ducati Super Sport 900 took me 2.5 years to build, and that I am very familiar with (motorcycle) so for me, I am figuring, while I learn the dinghy life, I can see what I might want down the road. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Excellent and encouraging! I am currently building an 18-foot yawl (Francois Vivier’s design “Jewell”) and recognize so many things about what a first-time boat builder experiences. You tell your story brilliantly and I hope to have the same degree of satisfaction once I am sailing the coastal waters in the country where I settled. Thank you.

    She is category C rated I believe so good for up to force 6 and waves to 2 metres (6 ft). I have sailed in both and she is quite happy 😊 . So good for coastal sailing, not just lakes. Certainly not blue water though!

    • @maciejkornatowski3026
      @maciejkornatowski3026 4 роки тому

      Issue with those is there's huge difference between waves and wind. Most C category boats can handle much stronger winds, its the waves that's the issue, and that will depend on exact place you're using it at.

      Lapstrake ply on stringers coated in epoxy. Fairly standard DIY practice these days.
      Dudley Dix would. rank among the best designers in the world for amateur construction at the moment.

      Dutch Waarschip is all multiplex too. Great designs, different types. Also modern ones. A light displacement weekend sailer, for instance, relatively deep and heavy keel, so pretty fast. In multiplex and epoxy.

  • @philipritson8821
    @philipritson8821 6 років тому +2

    Interesting family of boats.
    There is a 19 ft version called the Cape Cutter 19 made in GRP. Dudley Dix can sell you plans for a plywood Cape Cutter 19 and has just required the right to supply plywood Cape Cutter 19 kits.
    The manufacturer of the GRP Cape Cutter 19 has acquired the right to manufacture a GRP Cape Henry 21.
    The ply CH21 can also be built with bilge keels and Dudley Dix has plans to introduce a bilge keel option for the ply CC19.
    There are even 25 ft and 30 ft+ versions of this boat.

    I'm an amateur boat builder so I can identify with everything you say. At the risk of sounding pretentious, I will even go deeper. Because of mass production and extreme technology, everything is done for us (regular humans). We don't grow are own food, build are own houses, or even make anything at all that we use in life. Instead we do stupid jobs that we hate to get this symbolic item called money to pay for our things. Our off times are spent just distracting ourselves with whatever, drinks, drugs, internet, telivision or whatever. (Famous Quote by T.S. Eliot, distracted by distraction by distraction.) When you build a boat, you reconnect with a primal but forgotten aspect of being human; that is, using your hands,( and your mind) to build things. That is what hands are for! (duh). But not a stupid thing like modern art, but a real thing that actually does something in the real world. If its succesful, then you get that feeling of accomplishment, which can't be faked or bought. And then you get to be put in the water, in Nature, away from the Matrix, and you must navigate by your own wits and skills. I could go on, but you get the picture.

    Beautiful boat. Maybe a dumb question? Could you not just hang an outboard off the transom and then have the entire cockpit as useable space? That outboard through the hull seems to take up a lot of space. Other than that, it’s a beautiful pocket sized cruiser!

    • @Kameleonline
      @Kameleonline 2 роки тому

      Totally agree. There is now also the opportunity to put an electric sail-drive on, and that has the same effect - removes the engine from the cockpit, and allows you to put a seat at the back of the cockpit - more space to sleep out there too. The factory will fit the electric saildrive on the (GRP) Cape Cutter 19 - it just requires a small indent in the aft bit of the keel. Simple. And a much more elegant (and eco) solution.
