He guys this is crazy as I’m watching this awesome video of John and his rival 32’ and I’m trolling through comments and see y’all’s comments what a small world and the rival 32’ in Mexico i put a offered in and the lady owner of the boat excepted the offer so I’m happy I’m getting this boat as I will keep you informed and cheers again from Texas s/v oceancowboy
Another great classic boat vid. 👍🏻 I wish John had a YT sailing channel. It would be brilliant listening and watching this guy on his journeys. ⛵️ All the best, Paul.
Well I'm 64 and working a 9 to 14 hr day delivering food. Saving up for a boat of course. Lovely interview. Perhaps at 98 I'll meet you in the Bahamas. Wonderful life.
I met a sailor in Portugal on a Rival 32, he'd spent years in the Caribbean playing music, he had a double bass strapped to the cabin roof inside and an electric keyboard too.
im also from walton about the same age 71 have done 10 atlantic crossings 9 singlehanded must know some of the same people and we have never met. mayby this year when im off again ,
Thank you so much for putting this on, when we were getting our boat ready in North Carolina there was a Rival 32 down the dock, that was just like this one, so there are two of them at least. The last we heard of that boat, named "This Boat" it was in Cape Town, not able to leave due to some government inspection that found the rudder faulty. I doubt it, and I hope Jim was able to escape and continue to Australia. We based our boat in Grenada for several years and it is the nicest place in the Caribbean, do run up to Carriacou, there are people there that still can saw down trees and make boats that will take you anywhere.
Hello John. Thank you for your sharing of everything. Your boat of choice reminds of my childhood upbringing. My father Dad Paddy built a 29ft Trapper in our back yard for 5 years. Your boat is exactly that Low gunnel height and was an amazing sailing vessel. You are an amazing man. keep going. You are a massive inspiration for my dreams. I am 51 years old. You opened my eyes wide open
Loved this, thank you John. My late husband and I coveted Rivals from years ago. We had a sweet little Hurley 22 and fitted out the last Wing 25 hull (no 71) which we owned for some 25 plus years. Wonderful memories ❤
That’s awesome I love your videos John I’m from Texas and a buddy of mine much older than me had a 1974 Rival 32’ for sale in the states and I was going to buy it and he backed out of the sell and finally he has decided to sell it so I’m in the process of buying it and I’m very stocked these rivals he told me are the thoroughbred’s of the ocean well cheers from Texas s/v oceancowboy
I am younger than you are, 71 LOL! After racing for nearly 50 years of racing I am going to go cruising. Looking at 30-to 36’ boats. I am quickly loving the Albert 30 and the Camper Nicolson 31.
"Sail to the Carribean to see do I need a fridge." - if you understand THAT logic, your a boater! Love that idea! I don't think my little Foxcub 18 would be up to a transatlantic... to get down the Shannon to the Atlantic is the ambition for the coming year!
As a teenager in the early 70's with the bug to sail around the world I went onboard the Rival 32 at Earls Court and immediately thought this is 'my' boat. John Noakes was onboard too having a look, only difference back then was he could afford one and I most certainly couldn't! I ended up with a much bigger 32 footer, a steel Tahitiana. Let's see who ends up being the oldest circumnavigator...?
Excellent video Bob, and John is a fabulous example to us all. I am also at Titchmarsh Marina. Wasn't sure where Mrs Passmore fits into the scheme of things though, with talk of home, but also of John living full time on the boat ?
According to the plans available on the Rival Owners website the central doorway was an option on the Rival 32. I guess not many were built as I have not seen another one but I guess it was a design someone requested of designer Peter Brett. My Rival 32 is the offset version but has perfectly ample berths in the saloon by virtue of there being no lockers where John has his as a backrest.
Wow!... @00:59 Damn, you British sure know how to make perfect - just perfect - small ocean going sailboat. That might be the most perfect looking sailboat I have seen. In fact, just scale that up 20% keeping every angle and shape, and sell it to me. Simply a work of art...and you sold that? What were you thinking of..
The Rival designs by Peter Brett were a development of the fabulous sea-boat the Dee 25 (25 foot WL) on which I started sailing in 1970 as a lad, my father having fitted out and decked her in the front yard over 3 years. Similar internal layout works very well at sea. Lovely video.
I really enjoyed that John Passmore is quite the chap, I like his understated style. Nice boat too.👍😀⛵️ Could Bob or John add a link to Johns blog - I would like to ‘follow’.
Morning Conor, thanks for watching and your comment, I’ll turn him down in next video, but you also have the same technology at your finger tips. All best and thanks again Bob Aylott
This is such an inspiration to watch, It must take a special sort of person and a lot of courage, one can only imagine how it feels at night in the middle of an ocean. I have heard it is not uncommon to to run into whales or other hazards. Presumably you reduce speed during the night ?
During the ~12:30 wind vane discussion, there is a line behind the fine sailboat. Is this a drogue or safety line? David (Catalina 350) Tarpon Springs, Florida
Still looking for my 32 footer. The joke is on me. When the universe was handing out dreams to all the newborns, somehow mine got mixed up and went to John on The Rival 32. I think the quantum effects was responsible. I also was an old news reporter, also sailed a bit on my own 33 footer, can,t supervise anyone, bonked my back when I was 66, happy with my own company. Yes John, I think our dreams got mixed up. So if you're directly opposite my meridien, I'd be happy to swap places.
I just seen your video for the first time and your wonderful. I really enjoy how calming you are. I had a very rough week and I can't decompress just yet cause my boat is wrapped up for the winter in hopes of keeping the snow out of her. My boat is a 1958 Chinook 34. Entertain your self a little and read up on them. They are truly a fascinating piece of sailboat history and please respond back I'd love to hear your opinion on possible improvements. Oh by the way what do you mean occas will bite off the rudder? That's a terrifying thought. Much love and may you seas be as you wish them!
His desire to circumnavigate at 100 is more likely to come true if he pays attention to the carbon monoxide alarm. “I took the batteries out.” Give me strength…
Great video, love Rivals, we are sailing our Rival 34 1979 around the world at the moment

This dude is living the dream. Very inspirational.
Right on
One of the rare videos where the owner was much more interesting than their boat. ❤️
Thank you for posting.
A real 'seaman', and a proper 'sea boat'! Thanks for an inspiring and enjoyable episode
Yes, but please dont remove the batteries from the CO detector! If it is over-sensitive then simply install a CO monitor.
What a wonderful man . These are a dying breed . We are all in the gutter but some of us look to the stars . Oscar Wilde
I have been watching the sailing Brothers on UA-cam who have a Rival 34. Have to say very impressed with the sailing qualities of these boats
Another great classic boat vid. 👍🏻 I wish John had a YT sailing channel. It would be brilliant listening and watching this guy on his journeys. ⛵️
All the best,
Paul.
I just read his book, amazing guy

Aye, Mate! I'm 86 and still sailing! My '77 Challenger 32 (just seems a right size boat, eh?) is also up to the job! Fair winds, Sir!
I remember the 1st interview with John in the lockdown. Really nice to catch up and get the extended version with him. Cheers.

I'm subscribing just on the fact you said you want to sail till 100. I am now here for the journey :)
Great aspirations which I am sure may well be achieved. At 74 I plan to do similar.

Just read your book. A fantastic read for all sailors.
This yacht reminds me of a sailboat that was made in Louisiana called the Easterly, many years ago. A local company I believe

Didn’t think you would feature a first generation plastic boat but I suppose they are classics now
great seadog and great story ...just go on

Great video!
Just wonderful!
Here’s to your next 30 years sir. Keep moving
Thank you !
Having a reason to go somewhere is very important, I’m exactly the same with my motorcycle, hardly ever just go for a ride, need a purpose.
Great vid, so much fun to watch. Your no Pete Fountain, but you sound good. Thanx.

This guy is totally nuts. But let’s wish him the best!
So where does one find this blog?
Cycling, clarinet playing, sailing, old sod. Well that makes two of us. Off to look for a Rival 32....
Good for him. God bless. Cheers,
S/V Cork ~
Best wishes for the best of days.
Lovely fellow.
Great video,is your boat a full keel' Doug Antigonish Nova Scotia Canada

John, I’m 74, ex sailor…what’s your Stuff?
Another great video. More about the boats though!
Love the videos! Could you kindly please turn down or fade the very startling bark from the dog at the beginning. Thanks Conor

Have you considered the Pacific route ! Or a west to east not thru the canal!
Good on ya.Pal.
this bloke reminds me of me, i have a 30 footer and play the clarinet on it haha
During the ~12:30 wind vane discussion, there is a line behind the fine sailboat. Is this a drogue or safety line?
David (Catalina 350)

My guess isn't a safety line since he sails alone. I've heard it explained on other videos
I believe its a towed generator.
Aquair generator
@@oldmansailingI had no idea those existed. Cool

Hi Troy, thanks for leaving a great message to John. Where do you moor your boat?
@@myclassicboat9083 currently it's is on a trailer in provo Utah at the Utah lake state park.
It's kept at Utah lake. For the time being I use it as a trailer sailer.
Sadly i can only like just once.
