This is actually a cover of a wonderful 1972 song by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. You should check it out when you get a chance. Not that I'm knocking this version, not at all. Mick Hucknall's vocals are amazing, as they are on most Simply Red tracks. For your next one, you can do "Money's Too Tight (To Mention), "The Right Thing", or "It's Only Love". Thanks for reacting!
I agree, Linzi! He's the real deal live. He's got the pipes, without any mechanical help to hit and hold the notes while putting plenty of color into his vocals. So many vocalists that became hits in the 80's turn out to be disappointments live. They resort to auto tune a lot, or they end up sounded winded and unable to hold a not long, and definitely incapable of hitting those high notes on the recording.
Simply Red are a British soul and pop band formed in Manchester in 1985. The lead vocalist of the band is singer and songwriter Mick Hucknall, who, by the time the band initially disbanded in 2010, was the only original member left. Since the release of their debut studio album Picture Book (1985), they have had ten songs reach top 10 in the UK Singles Chart, including "Holding Back the Years" and "If You Don't Know Me by Now", both of which reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. They have had five number one albums in the UK, with their 1991 album, Stars, being one of the best-selling albums in UK chart history. At the 1992 and 1993 Brit Awards, they received the award for Best British Group. They received three Grammy Award nominations: for Best New Artist in 1987, and "Holding Back the Years" and "If You Don't Know Me by Now" for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. The band re-formed in 2015. Simply Red have sold over 50 million albums. Peace out.
Excellent short history of them Steve !👍 I think they should listen to Stars, Fairground, The Air That I Breathe & Home would give a nice addition to the two that Jay has done and Amber needs to do Holding Back The Years as it’s a killer version !
This is a remake. The original was by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and led by the late great Teddy Pendergrass. Teddy was one of the best, most soulful voices to ever lay down a track. Periodt!
Mick Hucknall's vocals are absolutely stunning. He has packed this passion filled voice into 50 million in record sales. Outstanding. Great reaction.Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
I'm so glad Jay and Amber have discovered Mick's amazing vocals and Simply Red's amazing songs. I'm mainly a rock fan but I've loved Simply Red since I first heard them. I love 'Fairground' myself. This is what music is about - pure quality.

Mick Hucknall is an incredibly soulful vocalist! He has a many wonderful tracks with Simply Red, and much great solo stuff as well. This song is a fantastic cover of the original 70's soul classic by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes.
This was a huge hit in America in 1989. Their next album, Stars from 1991, was huge in every country BUT America. It's strange it barely got played in America, but was album of the year everywhere else, well into 1992 and had 4 big hits
Another case for the "Grunge killed my career" file that Todd in the Shadows talks about sometimes, I guess. I think the music is a bit basic. But DAMN, Mick's voice…
I've only heard that one song Stars, but if that's any indication the album might have just been too different from what people were used to from them.

Simply Red are an amazing band that you need to check out more of. They are from Manchester, England and lead singer Mick Hucknall is a big Manchester United fan, the Red Devils, and of course Mick having read hair the band had to be called Simply Red. If you get the chance you would see if you can find a video of them performing with the Buena Vista Social Club band, I remember seeing them on TV years ago and it blew my mind. As for the next Simply Red songs I'd suggest Stars or For Your Babies (Something Your Me Started I think you'd also love thinking about it as well, as well as It's Only Love). So glad you checked this out though, can't wait for more!!!
If you are doing Simply Red, you have to do "Stars". It's the title track to their best album, and is a good example of their pop sound and Hucknall's incredible vocals.

This a cover song of a 70’s song. When I heard this song on FM radio in 1989, I thought this was an original song. It blew up on the adult contemporary station, the alternative station, the r & b station, and the top 40 stations. A massive hit record for Simply Red! It freaked me out when I realized this was an old song from the 70’s! I heard this growing up in the seventies.
Loved this reaction… and as I’m from Manchester England I have to say ‘ about bloody time’ Simply Red have always had a piece of my heart, my grandma was there biggest fan. Luckily for me, after 30 years I finally got to see Mick sing live in concert earlier this year and he’s still pitch perfect. Maybe react to something abit more up tempo like A new flame or something got me started or money’s too tight to mention, you’ll get a better idea of Micks vocal range, he’ll always be one of the best male vocalist ❤

I absolutely love Simply Red, and they did a great job with this song. It's originally by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. The lead singer of Simply Red is Mick Hucknall has a wonderfully soulful voice. His red hair was the inspiration for the name of the group. More from them.... @@keithknox5829 disagree, it's a good version but Mick's voice just hasn't got the same emotion as Teddy, and I like simply red a lot, their own stuff is excellent
@@keithwarrington2430 I wasn't saying I thought Simply Red's version was better than Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes version. But I do like what they did with it. Just like I like what Rod Stewart did with This old heart of mine by the Isley Brothers or Some guys have all the luck (who I forget who did the original versions, Persuaders, Intruders, one of those R&B groups from the late 60s to early 70s) but I've always been a big fan of Rocket Rod's stuff. I am totally colorblind when it comes to greatness in all things positive, inspiring and uplifting!
Hola! gracias por pasar muy buena musica!
This song sounds so good 😊
I’ve seen them twice live here in Italy I;the 80’s and the band was blowing people away with their sound and groove. People dancing, singing, entertained. A true show with great musicians and an amazing singer. Simply red, simply great.
I absolutely love Simply Red, and they did a great job with this song. It's originally by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.
The lead singer of Simply Red is Mick Hucknall has a wonderfully soulful voice. His red hair was the inspiration for the name of the group.
More from them....
"Your Eyes" (pay attention to the video as it tells a good story)
"More"
"Enough"
"Maybe, Someday"
"Infedelity"
"Sunrise" (samples a great Hall & Oates song)
"Something Got Me Started"
"Stars"
"It's Only Love"
"Say You Love Me"
"You've Got It" (another video to pay attention to)
"Jericho"
LMmcxcallL.57. I always thought that it was because they were ardent Man. United supporters!
I saw simply red live for the 3rd time last Monday. It's always worth it, it's incredible!
Great reaction guys. I really hope you get around to hearing more songs of Simply Red. Some of my favs are "Stars", The Right Thing" and "A New Flame", and I'm sure plenty of people have suggested others.
So soulful and beautiful song, love your reactions guys
This is one of the few covers that I prefer over the original.
My wife says the angels sing along when Mick Hucknall sings. Great song, great reaction.
He also covers the Stylistics song...You make me feel brand new... check that one out, you won't be disappointed. Excellent song choice tonight, it's been a while since I heard it, this was something I played on repeat when it came out.
''official video'' version
Don’t sleep on Simply Red ❤ Stars should be your next one.
Wow it's like you guys dove into my playlist today. Great choice for Simply Red. Mick Hucknall is considered "blue eyed soul", like Daryl Hall, so definitely r&b. Check out "it's only love" , "money's too tight to mention", and "sunrise" from them.
