Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes was the original artist and would be proud. Simply Red did a phenomenal job covering this song.
The original was sung by Teddy Pendergrass when he was in Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. In the mid-70s. Simply Red did it proud though.
ya beat me:)
Keep setting these youngsters straight ..... LOL!
both versions are awesome
Teddy Pendergrass. I had his face in my head but couldn’t get to his name. Old age, man.
Yep! Teddy P and then in the 80s Patti LaBelle done a live version of it.
He OWNS this cover...!
32 years and it STILL gives me goosebumps because of Mick's voice!
Great cover of original by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes
Just checked the original before this reaction now, thanks dude ✌🏻🙏🏻
Brought back a great old memory of my Dad.. thanks :)
Right
Teddy P....
I love both of them. Just a beautiful song.
Not many people could cover this and to it justice!!! Mick is one of them!!!
Imagine a whole generation never knowing this song if Simply Red hadn't covered it and done it such justice.
Agreed!
That I’ll agree with.
True that, and what a wonderful version this is!
So true. MAGA is leaving their this generation a heaping pile of shit. Our music is the least we can leave them.
This is the story of my marriage with Susan. We were together for 32 years prior to her death in 2013. It really brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear it. Amen.
Such an underrated singer in the USA. Mick is golden!🤩
Mick's voice always gives me chills, its THAT good.
Originally done by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes with the late great Teddy Pendergrass on lead. That's the one!
This is a cover that he did of this song and he nailed it! His voice is simple but bombastic! He could sing Old McDonald and make it awesome!🥰
My favorite version of this song. Simply Red did an amazing remake of an iconic love song. Mick's vocal is amazing and perfect for this song
What a voice. Fantastic cover.
Simply Red’s main dude Mick Hucknall has an unbelievable voice no matter what he’s singing!
The 80s will forever be the best decade of music. ❤️
Best Decade is 1964 through 1973

This ginger is so awesome. He came here to a festival a few years ago and I thought, ok ill listen he has a couple of good songs... The man was like 2 hours on stage and I knew almost every song! So awesome and pleasant to the eat music
This is such a great song........ a classic........ one that I could put on repeat and listen to forever.
A song is so much better when you can see/hear that the artist singing it is truly feeling it.
I am old now and am forever "Holding Back The Years" ...
What a beautiful cover, by simply red, the original is absolutely beautiful to. Kudos to simply red, for singing a beautiful classic. Music like this will never die. It will live on for the generation, to enjoy.
Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes were the first to record this song in 1972 and became their biggest hit.
Red has a wicked set of pipes.
I miss soul music including blue eyed soul. Bring back melody, harmony, soul and a real respect for each other.
Luther Vandross ( A House Is Not A Home )) what a voice & soul...you will be blown away.
So happy that we are getting into the Simply Red catalogue so many great songs to come
This Song was Masterpiece by Simply Red at his Era... What's the song.. Subhanallah Indah masa 90's.. Allahu Akbar...
What a voice and the back up singers were also great!
Did you listen to, "Holding Back The Years"? Really showcases his voice. Love it!!!
Yes Lois they did a reaction to that check out their channel
Love this one❤
Offfff THE Hoooook 😍 Timeless 🎶 Their first album first song from the album 😍
I was in high school when Simply Red became popular. The emotional edge to the music and vocal are still just as powerful today. Great song choice!
I love this song, I played this for my mom once and she instantly knew who the Originator was Harold Melvin and The Notes
Mick Hucknall has an amazing voice like so soulful a Red Headed Irish Angle❤ Simply Red is a very underrated band in my opinion I have them in my Pandora💜
You have to listen to Simply Red singing "You Make Me Feel Brand New". It will make your heart melt.
Super choice!!!! Mick Hucknall is heck of a singer. From City of Manchester , England. Legendary singer !
Check out these Simply Reds songs. Main vocalist is Mick Hucknall, who's is from Manchester, England.
"something got me started" ,"stars", "A new flame", "fairground"," "The Right Thing" "sunrise", "money is too tight", ... and others
Written by a composer and lyricist. Tried to get Patti LaBelle to do it but she declined. Check out the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes version. Interesting history- "If You Don't Know Me by Now" was originally written for Labelle (a trio led by Patti LaBelle) but they never recorded it. Much like the issue with "I Miss You" and The Dells passing on it, the song's composers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff gave it to Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, which featured Teddy Pendergrass as lead vocalist. In addition to the single release, the track was included on their debut album I Miss You.
God Bless You Sir! Thanks for posting
Wondering why Patti LaBelle declined to record it?
Thank God she declined it. Some songs just work out that way and for the better and it did with Teddy P
This is one of the best covers of all time people actually thought they were the originators of this song
I loved on you both today, came from your reaction to Simply Red "Holding back the Years" that was amazing and soulful. This reaction is the same...from the soul. Thankyou...Happy New Year from New Zealand!!!
I love this song so much! Man brings back memories and it always
brings a tear running down my cheek!
Such a great song. Red did it right. "If You Don't Know Me By Now" is just one of those fantastic songs that you just can't sing wrong no matter who does it.
Sorry, but it was definitely not his original, but he made it his own “SIMPLY RED” style!!!
I don't care who wrote the original. Just react to SIMPLY RED "stars", "something got me started" & "playground" cheers
White guys with red hair are not supposed to have that much soul .....LOL :)
Made it his own ????
What planet are you on...
This is good but older people like me will probably never think anything can surpass Harold Melvin with Teddy's vocals
Do not get offensive about my comment, I know what planet I am on!! Listen I love the guy, he has a unique voice and this is what I meant, no reason for you to ask me stupid questions!!!!
@@lydmarl.475 who care? Only Simply red
Got to do "Money's Too Tight To Mention" and "The Right Thing" by Simply Red whilst you are checking them out. Also "Sunrise" for one of their later tracks!! All absolute classics. 😀
STARS
sunrise
@@mikeyg3202 thanks for that, bloody autocorrect must have changed it and I didn't notice 🤣
What a spectacular voice!
The original is by harold melvin and the bluenotes. the late great teddy pendergrass was one of the bluenotes and was the lead singer of this song but simply red did a great cover they did their thing dope reaction
The original vocalist was Teddy Pendergrass. His story is truly heart-breaking . You could do well to check out some of his songs. Mick Hucknall has an amazing voice as well. My favourite song of Simply Red's is their first uk hit, Money's too tight to mention.
Red has such a good voice.
Love the 80s and early 90s....enjoy there is so much great music
Smooth R&B to the bone!!!
TEDDY P.! The late, great, phenomenal, incomparable on OG vocals with HM & the blue notes. Legendary
So glad for more Simply Red and Mick Hucknell. The original was by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.
Simply Red. Holding back the years beautiful song ❤️
Simply Red when he couldnt get a break he bought his own recording studio.good for him😅
“You’ve got it” is from the same period and an amazing track also. But yeah Mick Hugnall simply has an amazing voice. He is truly gifted, I remember seeing Simply red live once and was amazed how little difference there was between him singing live vs the recorded stuff. Anyway you should react to Some of the songs from the “Stars” album “for your babies”, “stars” or “something got me started”
Time to take them to Old School: If You Don't Know Me by Now
"If You Don't Know Me by Now" is a song written by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, and recorded by the Philadelphia soul musical group Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. It became their first hit after being released as a single in September 1972, topping the US R&B chart and peaking at number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100.Wikipedia
Recorded:
1972
Genre:
R&B, soul
What a great year! The year I was born and the year Teddy sang one of my favorites songs of all time👍
Documentary Teddy Pendergrass - If You Don’t Know Me ua-cam.com/video/LHa32YtYqEg/v-deo.html
This documentary explores the rise of Teddy Pendergrass, the first male African American artist to record five consecutive platinum albums against the backdrop of 1960s America, and his comeback after a life-changing accident.
I can't "Like" this video enough! Thank you! Love the emotion he displays.
Hey guys, Simply Red did an amazing cover of this song, but it was originally done by Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes with the late & great Teddy Pendergrass (R.I.P.) sing lead to this fantastic classic!!!
Who care?
@ g wolf you just proved after that other comment that you’re a Simply Red fan and never heard the original. And like happens can’t face it’s not the original and it’s not better.
Simply Red was the band right there. Loved their rendition. ❤️
Yeh as everyone else has said, this was a cover, but the boy smashed it 👌🔥💜🤷♂️
Again, loving watching you guys jus vibing to,and appreciating great vocals, especially Asia's face when those vocals really hit👌💜💜
He's literally amazing 1🥰
Such a great song. Props to the OGs of this.
Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes
I feel so lucky to have been a kid and teen in the 80's and a young adult in the 90's, so much great music, tele and films and just a general love of life.
If You Don't Know Me By Now was released by Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes in September 1972. This is a cover song by Simply Red released in 1989.
The soulful essence of Teddy's voice and the Blue notes in the background make the original a step above this version
i think so too. Teddy Pendergrass is deeper and just Teddy P.
ONE OF THE BEST ROMANTIC CLASSICS FROM THE 90s
It’s a cover by simply red a good cover!
❤️☝️🤩youuuuuuuuuuuu guys so amazing love that Song ❤️🤗 I don’t have anybody to hug so I’m sending you guys a big hug 🤩
Beautiful song.loved it for years
I love Simply Red’s rendition of this song! Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes were the originators of the song and they were great but Mick did his thing here! His voice is amazing!❤️❤️
If you want a more uptempo song he did with great vibe, try “Money’s Too Tight To Mention”
As I have said this is the reason the were with BB KING at the Royal Albert Hall on his last appearance there. For everyone Asia your man need to check out his last concert there it brings tears to my eyes everytime I watch it
Simply Red.. Stars is a must listen to 🎵❤
He’s British, react to some Jamiroquai for real funky music from the Brits
y'all should check out simply red doing sunrise 🔥🔥🔥
Love Simply Red and that beautiful mop of hair ❤❤
All their ballads are great, like "For Your Babies", "You've Got It", "If You Don't Know Me By Now" (cover Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes) and it's a great rendition by Simply Red, but after that one, take a listen to the funky stuff, like "She's Got It Bad", "I Won't Feel Bad", "The Right Thing" (extended version), "A New Flame", "Something Got Me Started", "To Be Free", "Don't Do Down", "Ain't That a Lot of Love" (official video)...I will stop now! 😁 Before I forget, definitely gotta do "Angel" - (official video / cover Aretha Franklin) featuring The Fugees, you guys will love that one! ✌
The original version was sung by HAROLD MELVIN & THE BLUENOTES when TEDDY PENDERGRASS was still their lead singer:ua-cam.com/video/nbaSh8i5eyE/v-deo.html But SIMPLY RED did a great cover too! Thanks for the GREAT reaction!
Yes, yes!! Teddy Pendergrass! Was even better than this one!
This song makes me think the most of my mama. When I was little it was always playing when she took me to the sitters before work. She'd wrap me in an old afghan and then this would come on the radio. Great reaction
What a song I loved this hit ! You should react and comment on these songs of this band, I highly recommend it : "Money too tie to mention" "Something got me started" "Come to my aid" "It's Only love" They have a lot of great songs !
Check them live at Royal Albert Hall. You Make Me Feel Brand New is another great cover they do.
Pure Soul music, the best genre for a badass vocalist like Mick.
Love your reaction to Simply Red. One of my favourites by them is A New Flame. It's actually upbeat. Just love it when the piano keyboard kicks in with the chorus.
His It’s Only Love is 🔥
WOW! 😳SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL! 👏👏👏👏👏
Me encanta Simple Red
Love this remake, Simply Red does a great job with this song.
Was originally Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes (Teddy Pendergrass was an original member) but Simply Red slays this.
Another amazing cover they do is You Manley me feel brand new.
First song me and my wife ever danced too 30 plus yrs ago RIP my baby girl all my love I miss you
I love that you guys appreciate good music.
I've seen him live many times and there is never a bum note. Quite frankly I think he is better live.
Love that song love the oldies
Yep. More soul than you can control. The original was sung by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.
The late great Teddy Pendergrass originally sung the song , but simply Red put it back on the charts in the 80s
I love the ladies reaction she’s feeling it
You two always put a smile on my face, I love watching your reactions to music, we can see the love of music in you two. Thank you for sharing a part of your life with us.
Come on!!! You gotta check out him doing their track Stars. Freakin awesome
Stars is my favorite. ⭐
Such an under-rated band.
Shes a beautiful song serious ❤😊
Easily one of the smoovest songs of all time, Up there with Otis Redding " these arms of mine"
"Sunrise" and "The Air that I Breathe" a bit of a cover both songs ,but magic from Simply Red.
Simply Red does a fantastic cover of this song!! But you should really listen to the original by Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes. Also "When a Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge. So many wonderful songs! Great job!
Harold Melvin and the blue notes did the original
