Dan Hartman was such an underappreciated artist. Jay, you've forgotten how much you loved Instant Replay, which is VERY uptempo. I Can Dream About You with its moving sidewalks was written by Dan Hartman for Hall & Oates, but they turned it down. NOW, you absolutely must hear his epic Vertigo/Relight My Fire. It is definitely FIRE! RIP Dan Hartman, who was taken from us too soon by AIDS.

The story goes that a planned music video for this song was made using footage of the group The Sorels which you see performing here on the TV set. It's from the movie " Streets of Fire", with the lead singer Winston Ford. When Dan Hartman got wind of this, he put a stop to it, as his contract stipulated that any version released commercially or for promotional purposes had to have his voice on it. Hartman recorded a new vocal for the video that replaced the one recorded by Winston Ford. A new video with Hartman lip-syncing was later made for the song. Winston Ford himself tragically died young at the age of 55 in a car accident in 2007. RIP - Both Artists taken away from us way too soon.

I bought this 45 record when it came out and I still love hearing it nearly 40 years later. It is sheer perfection from beginning to end. It has soul, power, tenderness, sweetness all rolled together. His lead vocals are outstanding. And I love the backup vocals. My favorite line is "Moving sidewalks -- I don't see under my feet". That totally captures the feeling of desire. Just hearing this song makes me feel young again.

Dan was riding in a limo in NYC, getting around to doing some Christmas shopping, when he noticed that shoppers were hustling and bustling along, yet not really at all enamored with shopping for Christmas, which gave him the idea of this song, which he was in the middle of writing as it already was.
    "Moving sidewalks
I don't see under my feet
Climbing up from down here below
Where the streets see me lonely for you, oh"
It was his way of expressing that Christmas shopping has turned into a chore, not fun anymore, just going through the motions, as having these strong feelings for another and wanting to just be with them instead.
Pretty clever and genius, yet also very relatable with the thoughts and words that he chose for this song, his signature solo song.

Such a great young talent to have passed at such an early age.

I only knew this song from the movie playing on the tv in this video. Always thought it was a group. Was totally shocked to see who actually sang it and of course had to look into his other work. He had already passed by then sadly.

SO happy for this! My first experience with this song was the MTV video...from the movie...my high school had a talent show each year, and they did a Lip Sync segment, because it was big at the time. I came up with a performance....I "lipped" lead, and actually did a good moonwalk...based on the video. Got a ton of kudos. But always love the song as well.

One of my favorite Dan Hartman's songs was Relight My Fire. This song was from a movie called Streets of Fire- which is what they're showing on the TV.. He was such a talented guy and he is greatly missed

Interesting fact about this song, before Dan Hartman recorded this song he had offered it to Hall & Oats. They declined the song since they had just finished their album and had no more room on the album. They were watching MTV months later and heard the song with Hartman singing it. … said it was one of the best songs they never recorded. LOL

If I remember correctly, this was on the soundtrack to a movie in the '80s called streets of fire. This was my very first introduction to blue-eyed soul

I really don't remember this song from Dan Hartman. I loved him in the Edgar Winter Group though and a lot of his solo work.
When I was much younger, I used his record "Instant Replay" for my routine when I tried out for a semi-pro football team cheerleader position and ended up on the squad. Those were a fabulous few years for me. Got noticed and even became a model based on it. For that, I'll forever be grateful to Dan Hartman. It was fun at that age. Of course, after a few years, I moved on from that and the superficiality of it all. I had more in mind for my life.

Dan Hartman also had another great hit with Second Nature (1985)! This one is definitely more "Up -Beat!"
