'Flight Into Egypt' Animatic (The Hunchback of Notre Dame Musical)

  • This was the first animatic that I conceptualized upon listening to the musical cast recording, as I liked the idea of taking up the challenge to think upon how a song like this could be filmed while ascribing to the concept of the voices of Notre Dame all being in Quasimodo's mind (and the most that we could get to see of any of it moving might be an almost psychedelic stained glass window sequence).
While the song in my video here plays out a bit differently from the way it does in the story of the stage musical, I think it has a bit of a nice touch towards the end, where Quasimodo feels a surge of confidence as he hears the voices of the church cheering him on while he ventures out to save Esmerelda, but then his courage quickly subsides and the voices cease as he realizes how far he is from the safety of his tower.
This video is not sponsored. This video is for non-profit purposes, as I do not own the rights to the music or the character designs. This was all a fan project made out of love for the animated film and the musical.
    Song:
-"Flight Into Egypt" from the Hunchback of Notre Dame Musical (Property of Ghostlight Records and Alan Menken). Performed by Michael Arden and the Hunchback of Notre Dame Ensemble.
'Hunchback of Notre Dame' character designs are owned by Walt Disney Animation Studios.

This is honestly stunnning. Every part of it is amazing from the cinematography to the body language to the art to the way you chose to portray the voices of the singers. Truly remarkable work!

Hunchback is one of the few Disney animated movies that could make a good live action movie as it's very grounded and live action could allow for the darker elements of the story to be brought to the forefront (not to say animation can't be used in that way it's just Disney doesn't do that.)
The problem, like with almost (if not all) live action adaptations is that they have no creativity in the way they're filmed, nothing is staged interestingly, nothing is light interestingly, no actor is directed in a way that can get a truly great performance. Even directors who have done good work in the past seem to have all of their creativity crushed when doing a live action adaptation.

"To her who is Notre Dame"
Meaning: to her who is our Lady
Our lady always refers to mary ( jesus' earthly mother)

Absolutely. In France, there are multiple cathederals called Notre Dame depending on their city: "Notre Dame de Paris, Notre Dame de Chartres, Notre Dame de Strausbourg, etc.

It motivates Quasimodo to overcome his fear of the outside world, against Frollo's restraint. This works better than what Disney cooked up.

Thank-you! When I started doing these while listening and re-listening to the cast recording, it was just when Disney really started delving into the whole "live-action remake" enterprise. And at the time, it was when a whole flood of ideas came into my mind about the possibilities of HoND getting remade and expanding into new territories.

I like the music ,don’t get me wrong, but I honestly prefer the Animated film over the Broadway adaptation.
The Broadway and original novel by Victor Hugo just feel too Doom and Gloom.
That’s why I personally prefer the Animated Disney film, mainly cause I find the plot is balanced. I do enjoy a story that can make me feel emotions and doesn’t sugarcoat reality, what I don’t enjoy is when a film is too much of the same emotion, if it’s to depressing I get turned away, if it’s to sappy I also get turned away.
I personally believe that the Disney adaptation is a good balance between Tense and Lighthearted.
Similar to stuff like the Lion King, Don Bluth films and a majority of the earlier Disney films, it has times to make you feel down/intimidated and also times to let you breathe, feel in awe and even let you laugh.
Not to mention the great animation, powerful soundtrack, and well developed characters.
I can see why people enjoy the music from the Broadway, but I’m just not a fan of its habit of not allowing the audience to take a break from all the depression.

And that's understandable to how you feel that way. I always go between the animated film, it's off-Broadway production, and it's 1999-2002 Berlin stage production (which is a bit lighter than the modern version with a more bittersweet ending). Everyone has their own to choose from, and I won't invalidate anyone's say for having a preference.
By here's my case for this version getting darker:
The animated film was the best it could be for the time (and given who it was aiming for), and we will continue to love it and appreciate it. The book has a lot of interesting and evocatave themes that have stood the test of time, but is still undoubtedly a downer (and the characters aren't all the most likeable, especially the way it portrays Esmerelda). In this stage version though, it's aiming to instill a bit of a sense of hope and weariness in its audience. I think it recognizes that there were children who grew up with the animated film, and believe that at the age they are now, they are ready for it to be taken to the next level. As indicated in the musical's song "Someday", the purpose of the darker tone is to re-enforce the bitter truth of the world that there are many people out there who, try as they might, won't live to see the world ridden of all injustices. So it leaves the audience on the note of asking the question, "How much have we accomplished since the 1400s? In what ways do we still have to improve?"
I see it as kind of an open-ended ending that invokes the Lorax philosophy: "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."
