  • It's a good day to be a bowhunter. Mark Drury harvests an Iowa giant in late October. The shot wasn't perfect, but the tracking was short thanks to the Rage broad head and PSE bow.

    The reason this deer didnt seem that spooked when he looked into the tree is because Mark played all his cards right, did his scouting and knew what the deer was doing without pressuring him, then waited for perfect day and went in and killed him. Mark has mastered hunting deer without ever letting the deer know there being hunted. Thats the name of the game and I think Mark deserves credit for all his great deer. Not jealous pple saying hes hunting a fenced farm.

    Do you think it takes a cold front to bring them out of that "lull" period or what do you attribute increased buck movement in October to??

    • @JVoss-ny2xg
      @JVoss-ny2xg 6 років тому

      I'm not a big fan of the "lull". It's simply a transition from summer home range to their, in my opinion, wider home range thru the rut and early winter. Feeding habits will change right along with their timing. A lot of mature bucks will go nocturnal cause they're not stupid, they know what's coming from their experiences of years past. To answer your question, a cold front helps tremendously. A colder pre-rut is awesome. High 70s and 80s in October kinda sucks or atleast most of the time. The timing of coming out of mid-october into early pre-rut has to do with multiple things, however, the weather is #1 in my opinion. People will argue, and rightly so, that it all has to do with the moon. I've hunted those red moon phases religiously and if it's warm....the activity is extremely slow. And, actually my trail cameras show the activity at night when it's much cooler . But, combine that red moon phase with highs in the low 50's and lows in the 30's in late October....you're gonna have a good time in the woods. Ultimately for me... it's all about the weather.

I'm an iowa boy and I'm a huge bow hunter like you are and I was hoping I could talk with you about getting an opportunity to come hunt with you. I've been hunting with my grandfather for years on a friend's property in cedar rapids and we just lost that opportunity because our friend sold that land and I really wanted to talk to you about getting a chance to dedicate a hunt of a life time with you to thank my grandfather for all the great memories of bow hunting with him, so if your willing to chat with me and possibly set up a hunt I'd really be honored.

    Exactly!!! Levi I don't even watch these guys anymore this is probably a paid hunt those deer just don't have pressure. I have friends who own a paid hunt in Ohio and the deer act like this, they said when they take people to the stands the deer hear the atv's and come out like answering a dinner bell. If that deer was in my back yard and you even spoke it would be out of there snorting up a storm. That's why this isn't real hunting to me.

      He"s called the mad scientist because he understands deer movement and shoots more monster whitetails than any person on earth. The only reason he's at where he is now is because he consistently shot big deer in his younger days on properties just like the average guy hunts, and was willing to bust his back to get on decent properties. Just because someone is better at something than you or willing to work harder for it doesn't mean you have to dislike them and talk crap about them.

    October Lull? You got to be kidding me. I would have expected a better answer from a so-called professional Hunter. To all you dude Hunters out there or new to hunting, there is no such thing as a october lull. you just have to be smarter than the deer. This is a transition in food, it's also been proven that throughout the fall bucks activity increases. Those hot Bean Alfalfa and clover Fields now have benn replaced by acorns apples pirmasens to eat in the woods and different foods mushrooms as well to eat. Most hunters ignore the signs typically the first scrapes are made by big bucks. I can go on for another 5 minutes and why there's no such thing as an October Lull. Dury you should know by now by October 13th you should be somewhere in the woods hunting. Not your old hot fields.

    What's like to kill deer that you dont put the hard work in for? Seriously, I'm surprised those soft little hands can pick up that rack. Maybe one day we'll see a video of them gutting, skinning and processing a deer.
