“CZroe” here. My thought were a little more along these lines: Nintendo partnered with Laral Group LLC to bring a flight stick to the N64. Their competitors had flight stick options on Saturn and PlayStation, but the N64 ultimately didn’t really need it due to the analog thumbstick. Still, they bragged about having famed flight sim producers like Paradigm Simulation (Pilotwings 64), so it would make sense for them to hedge their bets... just like that North American 64DD that Metal Jesus Rocks featured which was seemingly ready for the USA way back when the console first launched (probably in case the cartridge format crashed and burned). Nintendo famously scuttled their deal with Sony and never released the PlayStation attachment for SNES by undermining it, even though they had an agreement. In the case of Laral Group LLC, it’s very possible that they were designing it as an N64 accessory that was canceled. The contract may have been written in such a way that allowed Laral Group to move ahead with their designs in one way or another even if Nintendo canceled the supporting games or N64 accessory... kinda like a Plan B or exit clause. It would certainly explain it, a bit like the near-inexplicable CD-i Zelda and Mario games. ;)

So glad you featured this! People don't believe me when I tell them about it. I wish yours was up to snuff and worked properly, though.
Interesting to see you cover a retro PC peripheral. I'm into old computer stuff myself and I recall LGR covered this joystick as well. From what I remember, he said it really wasn't anything spectacular as far as flight sticks go, which I think I believe. Also worth stating, the "directional pad" you pointed out at the top is actually called a "point of view hat". You usually use it to look to the left or right in combat games. The analog slider is also called a "throttle", since you usually use it to get your vehicle going. I liked your idea of emulating some N64 games with it. Star Fox 64 seems like quite an experience with this.
I have no idea who had that when I was a kid, it certainly wasn't my family since we weren't a nintendo household. But I remember the feel of that joystick in my hand, and the sensation of those buttons, it was incredibly comfortable and pleasant to use. Especially when compared to standard joysticks for home use at the time, the classic stick with a ball on top kind, with one or two buttons at the base, and one button on the top.
@Nintendrew one trick I use to restore old analog sticks is electrical contact cleaner just spray the inside of the stick assembly on the board inside with a generous amount of the spray and move the sticks around then let its sit for about a day just to be on the safe side to let the cleaner evaporate
I have like three game port controllers (sadly, none of them this Nintendo beauty). I remember getting each one. You have no idea how old this video made me feel.
"We all know Nintendo has a tenancy to change a contract" Sounds like something that happened to a company that starts with an S and ended up taking the top from Nintendo.
@Gab Well, it was pretty obvious that the joystick would be usable on modern computers, even before showing it working on a computer. I think it was more talking about _how_ it was going to work on a modern computer (which, even then was kinda obvious).
I have a Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 PC joystick, which has the same number of inputs as the Nintendo 3D1. And the one game I play most with my Sidewinder 2 just happens to be Star Fox 64. Playing that game with a flight joystick is a totally different experience than with a controller, almost as if I was playing an entirely different game.
Every time I see one of these pop up on these Retro Gaming channels, it makes me smile. Me and my friends ALL had these back in the day and we never knew they weren't a household item that everyone knew 😂. I think we got them at big lots or compusa deeply discounted.
This was the first time in *months* (and in 2019) that I watched one of your videos. I'm so glad that I watched it. I had no idea that the NJS-3D1 existed until now. 🤓
This definitely is pretty weird considering Nintendo doesn’t make a whole lot of peripherals for other platforms (if any), but it’s still cool nonetheless. As always I loved the editing in the video, keep up the good work!
Ahh~ the first bgm you used here always gives me a good laugh, the GB Camera is still one of my favorite GB parts. However, speaking of the joystick... I dunno. It'd make sense if it was meant for the N64 given there are also official joysticks for its predecessors. You however must be happy to own that game, pretty sure it is a rare item these days.
I had one of them, I am sure I got it at a clearance price. It was a solid built joystick, every feature needed in the day. Eventually replaced by a Sidewinder 3d, which had better sensitivity and gave finer control. I am not sure how much that one has aged, but maybe it wasn't all that wonderfully more accurate in the day based on what I remember of mine new out of the box.
7:11 I think for a third-party peripheral for the N64. I think you third-party flight stick compatible with the console can be great when used for games like Sox.
My Phenom II PC's motherboard from 2009 has that connector as a pin header, so somewhat modern pc should pick it up. You might need a wrapper such as x360ce for it to be seen by the games, but could work. As for the wear, try dissasembly it and give it a good clean, most of the time is enough to get it working properly again
I find it suspect that this joystick would be made for the N64 since the system never received any flight simulation games that had features that could be fully mimicked with a flight stick, and while the toggle 3 option would make it somewhat ideal for fighting games......we all know thats the last thing Nintendo's 5th generation console was known for.
That jitter is likely from tarnished internal variable resistors/potentiometers/sliders. Without seeing the insides, I can't tell you which it uses for the axis, but the two pack Deoxic DB5, and Deoxic fader lube should be able to fix this. Drown the pots in the correct chemical, then actuate it a hundred times or so, check on pc if it is fixed, repeat as needed. This will clean the buttons as well.
That scenario is very believable because it has happened before. Nintendo made a deal with Philips to create a CD add-on for the SNES. However they changed their minds at the last moment. But in that deal Philips got the right to produce several games with Nintendo characters for their own console. This led to the infamous games like Mario is missing.
I remember seeing this at the time and was totally baffled and recall reading that when Nintendo were asked for a reason for the release of the controller they person asked just said there had to be a good reason behind it and their licencing department would probably know. As far as I know no one really had a clue but I think they were trying to get more hype behind the N64 anyway they could. Saying that though those headphone look interesting although I can't imagine the quality was all that good with infrared being used and probably wasn't much scope for head movement.
I feel like I’ve seen this randomly - back when it was relevant. It’s weird that it shows the 3D ‘N’ rather than just a classic Nintendo logo. It is neat how it emulates various other sticks though. But I’m sure that anyone buying a flight/joy stick back in the day would be buying a Thrustmaster or other high end stick.
Thanks for showcasing this! I know others have already mentioned using this thing with flight sims, and I'm also curious how it would perform with some of the PC titles from the '90s like Star Wars: TIE Fighter. Have you tried any? Assuming the input errors aren't as bad with a flight sim, it might be fun!
The Joystick probably needs to be calibrated. That was common to do even at the time. It can be done in the Joystick settings menu. That would probably fix the input issues.
Nah, not at all. I calibrated it thoroughly - believe me, I did my best to get it functioning. 😉 I also took apart the whole thing to inspect the analog stick mechanism, but it was very different from what I'm used to seeing so I wasn't able to fully disassemble it. In the end, using about half a can of compressed air helped take away about 50% of the problem, and that's when I decided it was good enough to start recording.
Could just be an issue with that weird serial to usb adapter. That would be a pretty cool adapter to have around honestly. Some of the best flight sticks were only serial port.
Weird. Must be a damaged flight stick then because I just rewatched the LGR episode on this and everything functioned properly when he went right into the serial port.
CZroe is my twin brother :) -- Looks like that one went through a Goodwill thrift store. "$2.00 Y" if someone bought it when the color of the week was yellow, they got it for $1.00 -- I've had a few of these. Got them brand new from Big Lots back in the day. Got at least one from Goodwill. Sold at least one on eBay for basically nothing. Really. It might have been less than $1.00 :( -- I've always suspected it was developed for Paradigm's Pilotwings 64, but Nintendo decided the N64 didn't need a flight stick after all.
there is also the possibility that nintendo where looking into the pc market again, and this was part of a deal they decided to drop, that wouldnt shock me, i know people who have worked for all the major console makers and, they at one point, all looked into the pc market or some sort of crossover, nintendo even looked into a pc add in card at once time similar to the NX1 cards that used quadratic rendering not polygons, its just one idea we talked over in regard to this, as well as what you mentioned... that would actually also play into it. it could be, it was always going to come with the gameport/midi plug, and an adapter for console use, nintendo have some weird beta tech out there, would not shock me if they had considered a pc ad-in that let people play console games or some console games, on pc, i can see some ways this could have sounded like a good idea, cross platform games and wider market for their products, the downfall would have been how shoddy windows of the era was, drivers, software.... as well as licencing and... well... i can see reasons they would back out, either way, i have had a few adapters that let you use pretty much any gameport/midiport/serial/d9/etc(console) controller work on modern windows, dealextreme and other similar sites have alot of this stuff that never really reaches the us market, you can find some fun stuff on aliexpress and dhgate as well :)
I’ll bet you can play any specific pc games that were on the n64 before they got a PC Port which is fantastic and amazing. Like South Park 64 and Star Wars Rouge Squadron for pc as well
I would love to see a stream where you play retro/modern games, I know that's not what you do, but it would be cool to try streaming for once. Just a suggestion that I thought I should tell you.
My guess is that Nintendo might've wanted to release some games on PC back in the days and then changed their minds because they were doing well enough with their own hardware to not bother making / porting games to the PC. So they basically gave their green light to a Laral to release a controller with the Nintendo logo on it and then never did anything with it. Considering how well Star Fox 64 plays with this controller compared to other games, this might've been the game that was intended to be ported on PC. Even nowadays, Nintendo is still kinda reluctant about releasing games on other platforms. There still aren't many Android Nintendo games after all.
I used to have a joystick when I played flight sim, I don't think the games chosen were giving true justice to the actual capacities of this beautiful piece of vintage

it could be, it was always going to come with the gameport/midi plug, and an adapter for console use, nintendo have some weird beta tech out there, would not shock me if they had considered a pc ad-in that let people play console games or some console games, on pc, i can see some ways this could have sounded like a good idea, cross platform games and wider market for their products, the downfall would have been how shoddy windows of the era was, drivers, software.... as well as licencing and... well... i can see reasons they would back out, either way, i have had a few adapters that let you use pretty much any gameport/midiport/serial/d9/etc(console) controller work on modern windows, dealextreme and other similar sites have alot of this stuff that never really reaches the us market, you can find some fun stuff on aliexpress and dhgate as well :)
I read the description as "In this video, we'll check out the Nintendo 3DS Joystick for PC"
Love ur channel
Also a friend of mine is getting into retro console/controller repair, if you ever want someone to take a look at it.
