EXPIRED INSTAX FILM- Does it work? (with sample photos)

- In this video, I talk about using expired Instax film. Does it work or is it better to just use fresh film? It depends on the expiration date and storage condition of the film. I share several examples and a couple recommendations.

Thank you. One of my packs is 4 months fast expiry date (due to buying them before covid and then our wedding date changing). The other packs are Sep 2021. Good to know I can still use it. Even if quality isn’t brilliant, it would be such a shame to waste it.
This is literally us! Just wanted this video to see if we needed new film before our wedding! So glad we can use our pre-covid film :)
It's great that you used the opportunity to compare and show what the expired film looks like, this has been the most helpful out of anything I looked up on this. Thank you, I watched all the ads!👍💜👍
Nice Job, short and very informative with the examples!
Was about to throw my 1 month expired film *sealed*. I have no idea you can still use expired film, good thing I saw this video. Thank you!
Extremely helpful, thank you! Was looking to buy a pack that is about a year expired that has a unique border, love those packs. Glad to know that the quality will still be good.
Thanks! It didn't show up in the search relevant feed, but it popped up in recommended today :)
This was so helpful especially with the examples thankyou so much. going to try to buy cheaper expired films now.
This video was very informative. Thank you
thank you this was so helpful! Ive got one from april 2022 and now im going to use it :)
I bought film that expired between 2020-2021. I live in the Caribbean, so I stored them in the fridge and the pictures are pretty good. It's my first time using instant film so i dont hv much to compare it to but im happy with them.
Thank you for this short but informative vid! 😀
Very informative. Thanks for sharing this! 🤝

You're welcome! Thanks for watching! :)
Ferfect! Thanks!
Thank you so much.
Hi! I have an Instax mini 70 and film that expired less than two years ago. It has not been kept in extreme cold or hot temperatures. I just put in new batteries and I put in a new pack of film after finishing my past photo pack with the same expiry date and the last photos from that pack turned out fine. Now my camera won’t put out any photo. I keep pressing the buttons to take the photo in any kind of “mode” and none of them work; not even the first photo that’s taken to expel the outside of the photo pack. Please help! I have my best friends in town and I’d love to use it. I have 5 packs of 10 pictures per roll of film and I want to use them but my camera won’t even “snap” the photo but it has new batteries. Please help! Thanks in advance. ☺️
Thank you!
for expired films what should be the mode? (like the house, cloud, sun)
So I've just bought a second hand unopened instax which came with original film! So it says its from 2019 but again the film is still sealed, so should it still be okay to use if used within good time or would it be reccomended against with such a time between, its been stored in the original box but other conditions I don't know :)
Mine, I just bought my instax film and instax MiniLiPlay camera last Feb 1 2022 and then by Feb 3rd 2022 when the film came out, It came out really black and some only half of the picture being developed and the half was black
I had film that expired in november/2020 (sealed and stored away from heat). I used it on my Mini Link 2 and the liquid leaked out the back. It made a huge mess...
i have a pack that expired in 2021, purchased in 2019, they have been stored in my closet, but i live in ghana (west africa) its decently hot. a few came out ok, but the rest have been all white, like the one you showed, is there no way to save them? i have a whole other pack of 20 films that i don't want to throw out - please help
Glad to watch ur video before I throw a bunch of expired 😭😭
What if we put cheap film at instax camera does it print photo
This was extremely helpful and informative! I was thinking about whether I should purchase film that is 9 months past the expiration date. I’m not sure how the seller stored it, but do you think it’s risky for the 9 months post expiration date?
I'd say go for it. I would personally I'd buy expired film up to 2 years after expiry but will think twice about anything older than that.
Sir, can I still use my sealed instax film which expired on September 2021? It was just stored in the cabinet for more than a year now. Thank you!
In my experience, slightly expired film of that age should still be ok. Expect some slightly lower quality especially if it temperature is high in your location.
I also bought a wide film that's expired for 2 years. It is still sealed tho, do you think I can still use it? (The expiry date on the box is jan.2019) I'm a bit scared for my camera haha
It sealed and about 2 years old, it should still be useable. If badly stored expect some color shift but in my experience all the 2yr old expired film I have used were ok.
If I store expired film in the fridge would it effect the quality?
Amazing video sir! Really helpful. Had my insta mini 9 for two years and only today I realized the films can expire.
Mines are only a few months old, and I have kept them in my room so I will try to shoot them fast in the next few months.
Thanks!
One question, do you know what is the caustic past that is mentioned on the instructions of the film? Is it toxic?
Developing chemicals tend to be caustic (high pH or very alkaline). Exposure on skin can cause minor chemical burns, itchiness, rashes or dermatitis. I've touched chemicals from a punctured film pack and my hand felt slightly itchy for a while.
@@GoneWithFilm so nothing big. Thanks! :)
Hi, this is very informative, my big question is will the expire films damage the camera?
In some cases, yes. If the film is really old, the chemical pods don't work as well. What happens is the chemicals on the film burst out from the pods and they leak onto the film rollers. The rollers get dirty and will have an effect on prints. It's easy to clean if it happens though.
I have a question! What if I left a few onstax inside the camera for like months for future purposes, is that okey? Will it develop when i use it?
You can leave the film inside the camera. Be advised that the film does oxidize and expire faster when it's not in the foil packaging so expect some changes to the image IF you are leave it unused inside the camera for more than 6 months.
Hi. I didn’t use instax mini 8 maybe 2 years and now I take a photo they out with shadow like your videos and have ink on the film which I think it expired. Then I changed the new one which will expire on 2022 the photo show but ink come out too. (I think it’s from the old one that already touched inside the camera ) Could you pls advice what I suppose to fix it.
Thank you in advance.🙏🏻😊
Chances are the chemicals from the old film have punctured and spread on the rollers. Since your camera is loaded, just try using the camera as normal-the chemical stains will cling to the films little by little. once you've finished your pack, inspect your rollers and see if they still need cleaning. I cleaned up my stained rollers by carefully swabbing them with cotton buds with a little alcohol.
Using again my cam after like 2years-ish, changed batt to eveready and it was okay sa first shots but then blank nalang after..after my 3rd pack my cam flash is not working na
Omg thank you, i have 1 pack but it’s already expire for a year
Hey! My instax mini 9 has 3 leftover refills after I put it in 2-3 years ago and I haven't used it since. Today I use it and my pics are all yellow with a little green at the bottom, does it happen because of the film or is something wrong with the camera?
I need help because I want to sell it, but I'm not sure if it's only because of the film
That's what aged and expired film typically looks like. Since it was loaded in the camera and exposed to air, the film ages faster than usual. Once you've used up all the film and the camera is empty, check the rollers for any chemical residue. If clean, then your camera should be good to go. I would also suggest testing out the camera with new film, just to be sure.
@@GoneWithFilm Thanks for the advice! Thank god nothing happened to the cam, so I have sold it
Hi not sure if you’ll see this but I’m trying to buy some film for a baby shower if it expired 05/2020 do you think it’d still be good to use?
Film from 2020 should still be ok. There might be some slight color shift though if it was stored in hot conditions.
hi I just wanted to ask I have to use two month expired film. Is that okay? It’s been stored in room temperature
Two months expired film should still be ok.
What is the average life of Fuji Mini Film? I've just ordered a pack of 50 and I expect at least 6 months of shelf life before it expires? If it arrives and it's got a month until expiry, I'll return it.
They're usually sold 2 years before expiry. In my experiences, if stored in ideal conditions, Instax film usually performs like new even if expired by a year or so.
@@GoneWithFilm I got my film and it's got an expiry date of Feb-2023. I'm happy with that lol
Can expired Fujifilm instax mini film damage the printer or the camera-printer if used?
In my experience it only happens if the film is too old (more than 2 years expired) and the chemical pods dry out. The chemicals leak out on the film rollers and stain them, as well as staining any film that hoes through.
Can you please tell me, should i buy mini 9 or mini 11 camera?
Go with the Mini 11-it's newer and has automatic exposure. The only advantage the mini 9 has is price.
@@GoneWithFilm thank you so much. You Solved my biggest problem.
Oh no I bought a lot of film and thought I might try ageing it. Perhaps time to use it all.
As long as the film works, why not? You just have to be careful that the film isn't so old that it leaves chemical marks on the camera's rollers.
@@GoneWithFilm I started using a film which was a year after its expiry date and it does show chemical marks and faded colours. Your video was very helpful for me otherwise I might have left it to age without thinking and it could have dried.
Any suggestion on what to do with expired instax film (5 years old)?
Either use it ASAP and hope for the best or don't use it and just keep it as part of a collection.
@@GoneWithFilm Thank you so much! I didn't realize I had film sitting idle in a cabinet somewhere. Sobrang sayang, actually! I wasn't aware there was an expiration until a blank film appeared haha.
@@GoneWithFilm Yeah, I opened one packet and was really puzzled because the polaroid never developed. It was just stark white. I didn't know film could expire, so thanks for answering my question. :) Lesson learned!
I have 2 expired films, one is expired on 05/2023 and one is 07/2023, they're stored in my bed room the whole time, can I still use it? 🤔
Those should be fine to use.
can i still use film that was already inserted in a camera? the camera it was inserted in is broken and the film's shield wasnt removed yet which is such a waste..lmk if its possible and wont have any adverse effects on the cam or the film thnks
I've done this several times. Make sure to change the film pack in total darkness because even if the film shield hasn't gone out, the pack may no longer be light-tight and might get exposed while changing.
@@GoneWithFilm Thank you so much :)
dear kind sir, how about films that expired in 2012 and 2007? would they be worth it to buy?
That's a bit too old for me. I'll try if it's really cheap but don't hope too much since after 5 years the Instax film may already be too dry to even develop. The 2012 ones may still work, but the 2007 will probably be blank.
GoneWithFilm thanks for this u’re very helpful n i wish u a good day sir
Does using expired instax film will affect the instax camera?
Only if the film is so old, the chemical pods puncture and spread chemicals on the film rollers.
I have already bought three packs and it expiring this december, I HAVE GOT THREE PACKS!!! 😭 There are any problem with that? Obviously I am going to use it for a long time! ):
There shouldn't be a problem with the three packs. Just make sure to use them up within a year or so after expiry. Using them up won't be too much of a problem- most people can finish a pack within thirty minutes, especially if there's an event or gathering going on.
Stored well is in room temperature?
Stored away from heat and moisture. It also depends on how hot it is in your area. Fujifilm recommends storing below 30 degrees celsius. In hot climates or during summer, some instax users store their films inside the refrigerator.
My film expired 3 years back , I gotta try them today :(
There's a good chance it's still ok. The only problem if it's too dried out or the chemical pods are leaking already.
And the expired film can damage the camera?
Not really-most of the time it's just the image that's affected. I haven't heard of an Instax camera being damaged by expired film.
salamat Po!! lahat nalang expired para matipid hehehe
Actually ganun nga gawain ko :) karamihan film ko expired.
Is it omay to take photos with the camera when i didnt put the film in to prank people
That should be ok, I use my camera without film sometimes for testing
@@GoneWithFilm thank u
Do cam movies other than mini have an expiration date or not?
Yes, most films sold in the market today usually have expiration dates 2-3 years into the future.
@@GoneWithFilm Well, if you take a photo with the instant camera, and the photo comes out, it has an expiration date!!!
@@GoneWithFilm You can photograph and stay with me for 5 years and it ends
@@GoneWithFilm Before I finish I take pictures and they stay for more than five years after shooting
@@hhajaj8026 In my experience Instax photos last at least 10 years. They use technologt similar to the old polaroids and those last 20+ years.
Question: does the film get affected after you take the pic even after a couple of years because I want them to be kept as memories.
.
Pictures are already taken not taken with expired films
Fresh film won't change or fade in a couple of years. I have 7 year old instax photos that look the same as when I took them. Just make sure to store them in a cool drynplace, away from heat, moisture and sunlight.
Mag tatanong lng guys pano dapat gawin kapag nag leaked ung ink sa roller ng intax camera
What amazed me is you were able to find expired 10years films 😂😂😂😂
Got it from a sort of an estate sale. Old cameras and film from estates in Japan and Hong Kong are sent here to the Philippines for liquidation. Film came with one of the older model instax cameras.
I too would buy all expired film if I could get it for much cheaper. Just like food, lol. Broke-ass habits.
The 10 years expired, did you buy it then take pic? Or you store it in 10 years already?
I bought an old Instax Mini 10 that had this film pack inside. The camera was discontinued sometime during the early 2000s and the seller told me it was imported from Japan as-is and was among a bunch of equipment that was unused for 5 years or more-that's how I came up with the date for the film, it could, however be older. I shot the film pack using that camera and the result is the one in the video. The camera worked when I loaded fresh film so it wasn't the camera's fault.
I have mini liplay, before i used to print and the result comes out great. But nowadays, there is line (like 4 line horizontal on the polaroid after printing). Is that because of the polaroid i used or there is problem with my liplay? 🥲
