- We decided to have some fun with ballistic gel. In this video we make a batch and do a quick test with a crossbow bolt. We will do further tests in upcoming videos.

The recipe that we used to make the ballistic gel was from the UA-cam channel Sciencish: • How to Make Ballistics...

For a reusable mold that is much faster to set up and strip, the short sides should be fixed in place to the bottom board. The longer sides attach to the bottom board with hinges. A simple clasp at the top of the long boards to secure to the fixed short boards...
When the gelatin has set, release the clasps and the long side boards swing down to release the mold.
It works great...
I hadn't thought of that. Maybe if I make another mold I'll try your technique. Thanks!
Watching a few different videos on how to make this. Seems like the recipe is the same. With that said there are some things the first video did different that i think might help.
1. Is using boiling water when making the gel to melt clumps and then pooring directly into the mold.
2. Was using a plastic bin as a mold as they are pre-made, Rectangular, sealed so no leaks, and can bend so its easy to remove gel and re-use.
1. I didn’t get any clumps using this method
2. If I was able to find a plastic container of the exact size that I needed I would have used it…easier said than done.
@BadBlood Outdoors fair. Wasn't trying to be rude though. Sorry if it came across like that
@@toastyghostyofdeath3909 I don’t think you came off as rude. The guy has a small channel so maybe he’s just a little defensive. Seems like a good dude overall, but may be a little awkward
Does ballistic gel have any tensile strength?
I work with silicone, and getting new silicone for every test cast is expensive.
The gelatin i made rips so easily that i cant get it out of the mold.
Can i use this stuff, or is there no way to make gelatin stronger?
No, you could rip it apart with your hands if you wanted. It can be made denser by increasing the gelatin:water ratio. I would try that or lubricating your mold so it releases the gelatin more easily. Good luck!
After shooting gel is there anyway re boil the block and make new one over and over

Thanks for watching!!!
Plastisol (the stuff they make fishing lures from) is available in 5 gal buckets. It's more than 10$, but less than half the cost of ballistics gel.
I've been working on designing and testing lathe turned hollowpoints, and was going through a crazy amount of gel. The plastisol is almost as good as the real deal. And can be recast.
The problem with animal based gelatin is crumbling. When I tried it, with firearms, it just blew into 1000 pieces instead of staying in a solid block.
Thank you for this!
338 Lapua ? 😆👍
Can you remelt the Knox after testing... I see you melted it once after mixing and letting it set up, so was wondering if you can remelt it after testing ?
You absolutely can remelt it...watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/euf4qSGf8Bc/v-deo.html
22gauge sheet metal would make a great mold
Probably would. I was just using what I had available. Thanks for watching.
Well I can't say for sure cuz I've never made any of this myself but I mean if it's only $10 obviously it's not going to be the best or even a medium like I want another price range between the highest you can pay to make these at your house or the cheapest which I'm assuming since $10 in this video that's it

Watch this video to see how our ballistic gel performed.
How long till the block starts to melt
I kept mine in the refrigerator until using it so melting wasn’t a factor. I would definitely keep it in a cool/dry spot though as it is essentially “food” and would eventually be subject to rotting. Sorry I can’t give you a better answer.
I think a 50 cal ammo can will work as mold
If that's the size you want then it would work. However, if you can't disassemble it then it'll be more difficult to remove the gel without damaging it. That's why I made my own mold.
Why not buy a plastic container?
That's an excellent question. I wanted to make it simple and make just enough gel for 1 container of gelatin. Therefore, in order to make a block of a desired size I needed a very specific sized container...which I could not find...so I made one. The ability to take one side off of the mold also made it easy to remove the block from the mold.
Where’s the cute redhead?
Who’s that?
Generic plastic shoe box from Walmart or the like seems a better mold.
Honestly, use whatever works best for your needs. I used materials I had on hand and was able to make it the exact size I wanted. Doing it this way also allows me to take the mold apart and reuse it...makes removing the hardened gel much easier.
Why the crappy music?
Went through all that, i dont even know how you think putting cardboard lined with foil would retain a warm to hot liquid 😂
I saw it in another video and thought I'd try it...obviously it didn't work. After that I just used what I had around the house.
