      i was just now thinking that perhaps a small hole at the bottom of the casting mold, with a little silicone plug may be helpful in removing the solidified block. pop out the plug and that should allow air to get under it while lifting out. this would (hypothetically) make it easier to remove from the mold. you could try this out with an old loaf pan first to see if it would actually work, or if i am thinking about this in a weird way and instead, it would not work.

    It's a heck of a cost savings if you can work out the issues. Rigid 'clear' PVC (available in sheets or as pipe) has a bluish-violet tinge to it. I'd bet the yellowish color of your sample is from the massive amounts of plasticizer required to turn it into a gel. Di-octal Phalate is the most common plasticizer, but it's a clear oily fluid in it's natural state (and stinks to high heaven). I'm thinking it's what's reacting to the heat, not the PVC base. I would expect you'll see it the material darken and become stiffer as you recycle it. You also may also have problems getting the pieces to fuse and become homogenous after a heat cycle or 2. Hope the info helps a bit, I'll be watching your progress, maybe Someday we'll have "Tao Gel" and you will revolutionize the market....

    • @taofledermaus
      @taofledermaus  2 роки тому +54

      I think you are correct. If you pour a little of this on cardboard the oily base will soak into the cardboard and leave a little puddle of the PVC on the surface. And yes, recasting this will be interesting. I might have to turn it into new gummy bears, which would actually look nice yellow.

    I don't see the yellow as a problem, as long as it can be clarified. The real question is how many times can it be melted down and reused? Will it get cloudier? Is there a way to chemically clarify it that is economical and safe for home use?

    That's really interesting, and very cool of them to work with you. I'm sure the possibility of a whole new market opening up for their product helps as well, and hopefully they can get into it. That's a heck of a price break over the traditional stuff. I know some people will complain, but I personally couldn't care less if it's off-color. It's a bit of a bummer when the gel starts going opaque, but it's not like I'm going to complain. I realize you're paying for the stuff out of pocket and 140 bucks isn't exactly chump change. Well, except maybe at the gas pump, but that's a whole other topic. Hopefully it works out for you. It'll be even better if its able to hold off from going opaque like the gel, or at least hold off longer.

    Nice one Jeff , as the saying go's "Nothing ventured nothing gained " . Fingers crossed & with a bit of luck shooters might see a different commercially available medium to test ballistic effects on , and with two producers of similar products there is a good chance prices might start to drop , all thanks to TFM viewers for suggesting it & TFM for being adventurous enough to test it as a ballistic testing material . As for it being a yellow tinge that's not really a problem ,it's still plenty transparent enough to be able to see wound channels & expansion & segmentation as it occurs , so You'll not have any complaints from Me or I suspect 99%+ of Your viewers . This is simply a different medium being tested , I love the fact that You used an air rifle for that first test shots and comparison , it would be interesting too know hat velocity that air pellet was travelling at & the weight I could see You doing a short group of episodes retesting several more common projectiles , like Foster Slugs or 00 buck shot , and perhaps some of the other Not So Unobtainable exotica round such as the wired lead balls , Yes it repetition of already proven results but in a different Medium , so there valid tests in its own right .
    Interesting as always , Thanks Shoot Straight Stay Safe & Stay Well.

    Crazy question, what temperature does the ballistics gel melt at and get to say an oil like consistency? We used to have our hydraulic oil in our test stands meet a cleanliness standard. We used a 3 micron filter on our parts washers to help reduce the ingress of particulates. We worked primarily cast iron and the graphite turned the fluids dark really fast but that filter made a huge difference on the tramp particulates in the solvent. We used finer filters on the test stands but if it isn’t too high of a temperature say

    There's reason to believe that clear ballistic gel is SEBS polymer in mineral oil (aka paraffin oil) that's also used to make transparent gel candles, and is sold by Hobby Lobby and Michaels as gel wax. A gallon is $40 at Hobby Lobby. I don't know if that concentration is appropriate, but another option is to aquire SEBS/kraton powder and make the gel. Could be easy and fun to try shooting the candle "wax", though.

    Hey guys I remember when I was a kid I use to drill out a 1oz slug, turning it Into a Hollow point. Then I would get some of the gun powder out of another slug. the type of powder that was a greenish colour, and it was an oblong shaped pellet type as well. And with a few drops of acetone in a small container, and mix, until it would turn to a gel blob then I'd half fill the slug with this blob of nitrocellulose. And it was would turn the slug into a sort of round that has a loud report when it hits the target. That would almost cut down a small tree. I never had the chance to see what it would do to a gel block. If it's possible would you be able to make and test these slugs on the gel block. I know it will be so much fun for you guys to see how simple this process is for such an awesome result. I was using a Smooth bore mass accelerator. Also I'd love to see what these would do in some of the slugs designed to open up like petals I suspect that it would be devastating in 1 of those copper petaled slugs. By the way I love your channel and being from Australia. Where they made it nearly impossible to own a gun. I would never have to he chance to do this again. I however could possibly get my dad to buy some shotgun rounds for me to make and send to you to test. But I'm sure you guys would be able to do this yourselves, alot easier than I could. I have been using Clear Ballistics for over a year. There's so many tricks and tips, but one thing I have noticed is that after I cut it up and soak it in a sink and wash it, simply towel drying the pieces before air drying reduces the yellow color it can get. Allowing big water droplets to air dry into it, allows iron to dry on it which can show in the next melt. I can remove it from the block fast without soap but it takes a technique of tipping logway against a wall, getting one hand between the mould and top of block and pulling really quickly a few short times. After that I do use a heat gun to take off fingerprints and mould marks.

    Awesome. I think Im going to give that plastisol a try myself for the next gel block. I also have a slow cooker and I didn't think about using it before. I think that the gel blocks that I make in half gallon cartons will fit perfectly in there after they are used since there is no way of putting it back in the mold after its cut. My plan is to just wrap it in Saran wrap after I complete testing and rush it back home but now I know I can take the slow cooker with me and place it in there, maybe inside a second container. I really like the idea of peeling away the cardboard instead of trying to pull the block out from the mold. The only problem is that there's nothing to put it back into until after it is melted. I guess all I need is a tin or aluminum deep baking pan to melt in and then I can just pour into a milk/juice carton. I already have a pretty good collection of half gallon cartons going.

I was a maintenance mechanic for a company that made molded rubber parts, seals, spline spaces, blowout preventer parts and gaskets.
