I really can't see how an electric version would flop - but this gasoline version is designed for off-the-shelf infrastructure as an immediate priority; which is the most practical strategy for now.
+Lacider ~ If they are FWD, the car may have torque steer issues if built with a lot of power. Also, I see what looks like exposed rotating axles in the front...if so, they may need to look at putting an outer tube over those. Road hazards may get caught up in those. Put it this way...good thing cassette tapes are mostly obsolete.

So on the interior... It's got a Camaro steering wheel, and F150 HVAC vents and controls... And the shifter from the Polaris Slingshot?.. Basically it's a parts bin car.
And the side mirrors are off a Suzuki motorcycle, and the steering wheel is off a Camaro, etc etc. Listen, all car makers big and small have been buying parts off each other since time began. Ford bought chassis from Dodge, GM bought transmissions from Ford, Chrysler bought everything from everybody, and AMC cars were literally designed from the ground up from parts that could be sourced from the Big 3 at a cheap rate. What Elio is trying to do is smart, and it's not a new strategy.

Since so many people have made a deposit without a test drive, if and when the vehicle is finally delivered, I predict we will see several of these for sale as used vehicles because the buyer was dissapointed with something about it. I for one would love to have one and plan to wait for one to show up used and buy it if I like the test drive. :-)
So I have been wondering how resistant they are to damage from potholes, In nova scotia about where I live 8" deep holes in the middle of the road are pretty common in areas with speed limits up to 90km/hr The kind of holes my 2010 cobalt hits hard enough to give you a good jar. My father wrecked a tire on the roads near I live going 60km/hr in an 70km/hr zone putting enough force to slightly bend the rim (but it's still useable) on his 2006 optra with low profile tires. Also does the elio come stock with a low profile style tires or more traditional ones. And is there any options when it comes to wheel and tire types?
Paul PLEASE get rid of the Tonka Toy gauges in the final product. I love the car and honestly plan on eventually getting one but those gauges are almost a deal killer for me. Please keep driving forward, you and your team are really doing an amazing thing.

Not sure that delivery will happen in 2016 and the $6800 price tag seems low, even for such a basic car, but for Elio to get this far, most impressive.

robert hoffman the old ones had geo engines, etc. The new engine is one of the things new with this set. So the question is how their new engine changes the experience from the old prototypes with 20+ yr old engine designs. Small engines have come a long way in 20yrs.
Elio I hope you are reading this because this is a safety concern. This vehicle NEEDS to have a light on the front wheel covers because at night other drivers won't see them. The Can-am has them. At LEAST put light reflectors on the back and front of these wheel covers.
I looked at a couple of websites with articles regarding this new P5 Elio reveal at the LA auto show. Both of those sites say that the Elio will start being produced in 4th quarter 2016 & the price will be $9000. Whatever happened to $6800? Where are they getting this $9000 price tag at?
America needs something like this. everywhere else in the world is fuel efficient because motorcycles are alot more common and with theese as competition and a similar price point I can see them doing well with the people that fear motorcycles in America. solid concept. I'd put a sunroof option and the standard transmition.

Even if they claim that it gives 84mpg you have to ask "under what circumstances". remember when someone sells something they do the best they can to get good numbers. and let's say it can do 8mpg, the 2nd question is, well how many gallons can it hold per tank.

I think it is that in 45 states you don't need a helmet, and it is a regular drivers license.
