Would love to see a real old-school trucker doing the review, going through the full sequence: driving his actual rig, unloading the trailer, switching to the tesla semi, loading the trailer, driving through a weigh station, driving to a delivery point, etc.
Scroll around, and look for my comments. I'd love your feed back. I am 70.
Not gonna happen. This is just a shell for investor money
One thing that is absolutely crap is the driver seat in the middle.
When reversing to a loadingdock its nice if you can stick your head out of the window. In this truck you need a real long neck.......
I didn't even think about that. I stick my head out every time I back, even in the rain.@@erikdikkers7931

I love how it doesn't matter what vehicle Jay drives, he can't keep it in the lane.
35:57 "By the way, you're totally nailing the center drive position!" Jay driving all over the road and basically always partially in the left lane.
@24:50 🤣🤣🤣
The central driving position will take time to get used to
It looks like he is tired and wants to say good night
Lanes are for wusses!
I’m the city manager in charge of off duty police operations for the city of Burbank. There were off duty police paid for by the production team for this PR shoot of this vehicle. Mr Leno was under escort by these officers through the streets and was ask to drive in the middle of two lanes for most of the journey during filming.

to bad he's a dummycrat
I love how the Tesla designer is telling Jay how he's nailing keeping the truck centered. Meanwhile the camera man is showing Jay hugging 2 lanes and driving over the white line😅
he almost always drives on two lanes, it is common to see that
I don't know whether Jay holds a CDL or merely has a CDL permit. Or perhaps he didn't give a damn, found that it drives more like a car, had a filming permit, and even had a police car blocking the road when he made a U turn.
I don't think Jay is capable of keeping any vehicle in a lane anymore.
@@bW9taeH4you don’t need a cdl to drive the thing as a demo. He’s not driving for hire.
It is a skill to drive a semi Tractor Trailor.
That cracked me up when he hooked up to the trailer. That'd be a huge selling point if you could stay in the truck while the pit crew hookup team handled everything. They came out of the shrubs like little fairies 😂
Jay insisted on doing the hookup but insurance regulations prevented him.

1:27 Funny how “Dan” stayed on script and didn’t answer J’s question about weight. 😂😂😂😂
Why "Dan"?
I noticed that immediately !!
So nobody knows the actual weight? Or is is secret?
At 31:40, they mention gross vehicle weight. 60 to 70k. So... let's go with 65k. Trailer probably around 15k. That means around 25k per truck. I'd say 19k to 21k is average.
@@blaze553 that other electric semi with a range of 350 miles say their tractor weighs 29000#, my sleeper tractor weighs 16000#. you will not find any where they will tell what it weighs
Props to the guy explaining everything so clear and concisely 👏🏻
Seriously. He did an awesome job giving the details and from the perspective of the drivers.
I can imagine that with all the current going through those batteries it will burst into flames after about 20,000 miles!
Yeah, especially when Leno asked him what the weight was...
I sincerely respect the fact that both the Chief Designer and the Senior Manager of Engineering hook up and disconnect the trailer with their own hands.
Yeah...that's some kind of special knowledge needed to do that. I doubt a regular truck driver could figure that out...

Sounded like trained corporate-speak to me. At 23:11 Jay asked about a screen view they hadn't considered yet. The manager comment didn't make sense because he had to improvise without a script. Obviously talented people here. It's company culture that causes that. Mistakes cost careers. Billions on the line...
A huge issue here is weight….. I am a small fleet owner and driver myself. In the U.S. the max gross weight a truck and cargo can be is 80,000 pounds without special permits. My truck weighs 17,000 pounds, they mentioned the load Jay was pulling at over 50,000 pounds. The trailer he was attached to weighs less than 10,000lbs, so the truck alone is over 40,000lbs. That’s almost 3 times the weight of my truck. That being said, it would take 3 of these to haul the max weight alone that I can haul. Now multiply the cost of this truck times 3 which would be somewhere close to $1.5mill. in tractors to move what I can move and my truck was $190,000 new. I could put (7) trucks like mine on the road hauling freight for the same initial cost without factoring in how much more freight I could haul across the country with seven rigs. Now, which avenue would save the customer or end user the most money? I like the idea of electric trucks if they are cost effective. These are nowhere cost effective for anyone, anytime soon. The Freightliner version of this truck is $500 - $600,000 to initially purchase. The numbers just don’t make sense.
60-70 gross, minus 10 for the trailer, call it 55, for 2 telsa trucks. So the trucks way somewhere around 27 to 30 each. So I agree, way to heavy! Imagine your towing a 53' refer daily! Your empty weight would be around 50!
Great comment and couldn't agree more!
I’m a truck driver too. I agree 100%. Also, keep in mind the distance for OTR (over the road) my truck runs out of fuel at 1,000 miles. I fuel it back up in 5 minutes or less. These teslas run out at 400 miles. It would take a very long time to recharge. You’ll never get to the receiver on time. You’ll be days late!
The math has been done on this. The load deficit is between 4-6k lbs when compared to a diesel truck. The Tesla gets an extra 2k for being an ev. According to the statistics, 80% of the loads on the road fall within the Tesla semi's capabilities.
@@ziahreid9269So range and cost is really the issue for the 80%.
Exactly! Bunch gooroos think they know about trucking and know nothing. Them trucks light freight trucks. That’s only hauling 20-40,000.
As a young former driver (28), I could see many ppl near my age being open to driving these. I love the suicide door. Love the tech and cameras. My only thought is, I would love for Tesla or someone to make accompanying trailers & reefers that would be outfitted with cameras. And possibly outfitted with an automated lift when hooking and unhooking. Then another thought comes to mind of moving your tandems.
and it should be possible to attach cameras easily to non tesla trailers, that connect wirelessly. magnetic. simply slap them on the trailer. Also, autonomous reversing!!!

Jay is really good at asking good questions, one after the other, appropriate nuance, topics, and lets the guys answer as deep as they would like to go

I really like how Jay is able to enjoy them all. It doesn't matter if it's steam, gas, diesel, or electric.
A true “car guy” appreciates all cars and progress. Personally, I own two Teslas. I’ve run the gamut over the past 16 years that I’ve been driving, sports cars, SUVs, luxury sedans, just started dabbling in motorcycles, and now my wife and I have a Y and 3. I loved something about every car I’ve owned, but the Teslas really tick all the boxes.
I remember John Mayer saying it really well in an interview. Jay Leno's parking spot would have something like a 1920s firetruck in it, and you come to realize that he could drive anything he wanted and it would make sense because he's such an enthusiast.
Yeah and it's a really fun time to be alive with all of the recent innovations.

Pencil pushers dont drive trucks, they drive their desk and push a pencil
26:52 Jay mentions he wants the screens swapped maybe. Can immediately see the engineer go to work in his head "how can we make these switchable?" or similar. As others have said its refreshing to see design that makes sense. Cant wait to see where these go after more iterations.
Another thing awesome to note is how they want to innovate the industry. Bring in younger drivers. Make it comfy. Make it usable.
My opinion: they need hella chrome--dont leave the polishers behind. They also could utilize that massive cabin headspace for OTR applications.
This is easy, mobile app with your configuration profiles. Auth controlled by fleet management so they can assign you a truck, you can walk out to it and start it with your phone and it will configure the screens to your pref. They probably just haven't done that yet because it is low hanging fruit relative to the other things they need to worry about and don't want to need to support custom screen configuration support calls on top of everything else at this point.

I wonder why? DC Fast charging is expensive. It needs big, expensive chargers that cost as much as $100,000 each. The circuits to bring it in are expensive, and users with high sustained peaks - as chargers do - will pay even more. That’s why the car chargers that run from 50kW to 350kW tend to charge from 30 to 50 cents/kWh. Tesla promotes a megawatt charger for the Semi, and given past patterns, you can expect charging from that is going to come at a higher price. Anything over 40 cents/kWh is going to be higher than the cost of diesel.
o they cost twice as much to buy / can go 1/4 as far as a regular Semi / 100K for the charger / could actually cost more than diesel to fill up / the city will need to build high capacity electrical transformers / state and federal will need to build more power plants and new electrical infrastructure that is more available and higher capacity to power the chargers / mining the materials used to build the batteries are killing the POOR people who mine the stuff / co2 emissions generated to building them (multiple times as much as a regular vehicle) Assembly generates a tiny fraction of the co2 emissions / the rest of the emissions are generated somewhere else ...so who cares
Recently bought some recommended stocks and now they are just penny stocks. There seems to be more negative portfolios in the last 3rd half of 2023 with markets tumbling, soaring inflation, and banks going out of business. My concern is how can the rapid interest-rate hike be of favor to a value investor, or is it better avoiding stocks for a while?
Just ''buy the dip'' man. In the long term it will payoff. High interest rates usually mean lower stock prices, however investors should be cautious of the bull run, its best you connect with a well-qualified adviser to meet your growth goals and avoid blunder
The truth is that this is really not as difficult as many people presume it to be. It requires a certain level of diligence, no doubt, which is something ordinary investors lack, and so a financial advisor often comes in very handy. My friend just pulled in more than $84k last month alone from his investment with his advisor. That is how people are able to make such huge profits in the market

And maybe Elon will fly you on a one way ticket to mars with the rest of you idiots that think your saving the planet by driving an electric vehicle.
I wish I can try the semi one day ( I have no license for big truck) Tesla semi will make truck driver lives easier
It will probably feel like driving a big model 3
The mention of Aptera gave me goosebumps

This is just an ad for Tesla.
These guys talk like politicians. Or worse, car salesman. This thing is years from being doable over the road. City maybe, cross country, nope.
Probably not finished yet, and it will probably have variable battery load out that will change the weight. When he hooks up trailer he did say 60-70k lbs back there with a semi on the flatbed, can probably figure it out from the trailer weight.

So far I am not hearing them comment on one of the things the driver's might appreciate most. Normal trucks are incredibly noisy inside. Peace and quiet for 11+ hours per day is going to really make the day less tiring for a lot of drivers.
That Pepsi truck protecting their rear is funny.

If your order one I suspect that you will told that. Anything else just gives the haters more FUD to spew
The production Nikola TRE FCEV which has a 500 mile range fully loaded weighs about 26,000 pounds. Batteries are heavy so I suspect the Tesla Semi will be heavier than that so have less load carrying capacity.
Daaaam!!! These are some good videos.

It's so great to see Jay enjoy, discuss, ask sharp questions and drive. Long live Jay!

These guys are great at explaining complex. things, but Jay is a master at asking the right questions with just enough depth to get a good solid answer that is engaging. He knows flow and personability. He makes his guests look so good. A true master
This is a thoughtful observation. Thank you for putting it into words. I really appreciated his intentional questions that allowed the engineers to answer thoroughly. But I did take that conversational ability that he has for granted. Well said.
If he didn't have his car thing, probably could have done well interviewing people for a living.

His speech has been slurred lately, not the same energy he used to have.
Well being a trucker and being a owner of a trucking company, I have to say they have allot to learn but they have come so far. I want to drive a Tesla sleeper cab with a oversized, overweight load from Seattle, Washington to Denver, Colorado then, up through Nebraska and Minnesota straight to the hill of 76 in Pennsylvania then North Carolina. And if the truck makes it through there keep going up to ME to the Canadian border. If and only if the Tesla truck makes it that far safely with out any major issues, I will definitely consider trading in my 650hp Manual Transmission dual exhaust Kenworth T-680.
What part of that do you think a Tesla Semi would have trouble with?
Jay would make a good truck driver!Cool truck, I want one
This old retired semi-driver might just come out of retirement if one of those was offered as a seat! Great video! Thanks Jay!
This mid young guy with a completely unrelated great career has an itch to get into trucking ever since the unveil of the Tesla semi.
Hopefully it won't break-down cause there's a bunch of old diesel mechanics to fix your ride but not many Tesla mechanics or service facilities. That's why older guys are usually late adopters to technology. It costs too much even if they make it sound like it won't.
@@dskwared2u610 Tesla doesn't let you work on their cars but you think they're going to let you fix the trucks?
@@chuckdavinci9044 It's called the "Right to Repair" and Tesla is being sued which further illustrates my point. Tesla will lose these law suits. It's well-known that Tesla cars have suffered from more extreme shortages of parts and have long waiting periods for service because of a shortage of technicians, not to mention how the lack of competition has contributed to higher repair costs. If these trucks have 4 year 50,000 mile warranties, that's nothing for a semi. Independents will need to be able to work on these things. There's little to know infrastructure. Imagine how much money you'll make as a driver when there's no parts to get you back on the road and a shortage of technicians available to do the work.
@@dskwared2u610 call it the right to beat women and children so maybe Congress will go along with making repairs a Right and then Tesla will be lease only so you don't have any Right to repair their trucks.

I can imagine it'll give extra flexibility in places like indoor arenas where being exhaust-free they could drive around inside bringing the load right to where it is needed.
I'm old enough to remember not being bothered by cigarette smoke, at all. Now it all seems so stupid. What are smokers thinking.
Also old enough to remember my eyes burning when I came into LA. Man, that smog was like thick fog. Ever seen a kid with bad asthma? Breaks your heart. We don't need it.
An additional benefit is silence. You can operate with loading and directly, clearly communicate with everyone around without raising your voice.
We do this already with diesel trucks. Power Only is the agent of trucking that pulls event loads from stadium to stadium. About 4 years ago I was moving them regularly with a 30 year old truck without issue. Drove right into the, Saints in Louisiana I want to say, and parked up next to the other 2 trucks also getting loaded.
Most stadiums already have indoor and underground docks, so driving into the stadium itself wouldn't really be a benefit since there aren't docking bays in the middle of a stadium floor, heh.
That said, it is already extremely common for indoor industries to use battery powered equipment whenever possible. Forklifts and material handling equipment at warehouses and plants are most commonly battery electric. It makes working conditions significantly better.
Large equipment though, and mining and industrial equipment is still diesel powered due to the technology for them being strictly electric hasn't been developed yet.
While we CAN do it, these machines cost multiple millions of dollars and cause massive amounts of loss when the equipment fails. Diesel and hydraulic technology is well developed and reliable, so until battery electric has proven itself reliable with a few decades of real world use in each segment, diesel heavy equipment will continue to be used.
Except for one little problem, they can't drive themselves. Also, how is the electricity made to power those trucks - we burn coal and have to use more energy to produce and install the infrastructure for EVs. It's all a lie. Elon would be focused on developing green energy technology, not selling false promises and manipulating legislation (bribe) to have the tax payer subsidize his companies, if he was more concerned with helping the environment than being the richest person in the world.
@@ejt3708I remember the burning eyes. First your eyes start to burn, then you see the dome of brown haze on the horizon, then the sign: 45 miles to LA.
Especially on stretches of the i80 through the mountains where there’s crazy amounts of downhill and sweeping turns, I can see the regen braking ability to be a total game changer making it safe and not worrying about roasted brakes!
You could easily end up with a battery fire or if there isn’t enough ullage a brake failure and no regen available. We shall soon see
@@theairstig9164 - You need to do a little research on electric vehicles. A Tesla battery catching on fire is a very rare thing. ICE fires happen at a 10x rate compared to Tesla battery fires. The brakes on a EV still get used at every stop light. But most of the wear on the pads are eliminated with regen braking. The brakes last a lot longer and require less maintenance.
@@donm2255Difference is a person who carry’s a fire extinguisher in their car can put out a car fire before it destroys the car, a EV car fire cannot be put out by the driver. EV battery fires are much more difficult to put out, and also the location of the batteries make it very difficult to put out the fire.

The Tesla Semi is truly remarkable. 🚛🔋
Pour one out for the Sound Engineers who worked on this one - there are freaking _Jets_ taxiing in the background!!! Great job team!
It's a Helluva truck, I hope it fulfills the environmentally friendly aspects of powering it, as promised!
Well the typical EV car requires over 100,000 of earth to be dug for each battery, this semi probably requires well over million pounds of dirt to be moved for its battery pack. The Tesla Cyber Truck battery weighs 3,100 pounds(my dad's 1985 Dodge Ram long bed truck weighs 3,800LB) and the Cyber truck's total weight is 7,100 pounds(how is that environmentally friendly). Now these batteries will need to be replaced every eight to ten years(Cyber Truck battery costs over $20K to replace) and not much in recycling happening, so what happens to all these batteries at the end of their cycle life? And lets not forget that EV's are 20% harder on tires than ICE vehicles.
@@vanillaexplosion99 yeah unfortunately the Semi isn't very good at its one job. Towing. PepsiCo is using it mainly for chips which have hardly any weight at all and for transporting stuff like that I'm sure its great, but otherwise it's really bad. Volvo released an electric truck that is good at towing because it's not focusing on things like 0-60 times and futuristic tech and rather balancing towing capacity with range. Mercedes also has one but they only sell in the EU.
The Daimler BEV (all-battery) freight truck pack is 550kwh. Judging by claims of longer range, I expect Tesla freight truck packs are larger. This point is important based on how limited battery resources are distributed. I'm an advocate for plug-in hybrid PHEV tech for big rigs. Small battery packs for PHEV passenger cars likewise distributes battery resources more broadly. My rough estimate is - for a single '1' BEV freight truck, as many as "500" household PHEVs is possible. Divide the freight truck BEV pack into 5 PHEV packs and the same battery resource could deliver 5x the number of miles before depletion and expensive replacement. At some point, combustible hydrogen in a PHEV+H drivetrain will corner the market because hydrogen stores at significantly lower pressure in smaller-safer tanks and could deliver more than twice the equivalent MPG possible with fuel cell HFCEV tech. Toyota's Marai fuel cell in that regard is a mistake.
@@DrKoneko Where did you come up with that? Real world testing at the "Run On Less" event over 18 days, 3 Tesla semi's hauled up to 80,000 lbs GVW and completely verified all of Tesla's range claims. Pepsi hauls beverages, not just chips.
