Great concept and well done. So the VW claims 240mpg at 50k plus cost and the Elio 84mpg at a mere $6800 - I can buy a ton of fuel for 43,000 dollars - Elio make more sense and is American made. I think the Elio is a sure winner!
Endeavor Trikes_ You must work for the company... Elio took a lot of money and... How many have been produced? It's like me showing the Millenium falcon and selling it for $2,000. I'll get a lot of money but I too will not be able to produce the product!
Can you imagine the number of test drives any one dealership is going to contend with? People will be lined up for a test drive. This looks like a very promising vehicle. I might just purchase one as a second car.
I think they're going with a direct sales method (like Tesla), skipping the dealerships entirely. They'll contract with 3rd party auto service chains to do maintenance, although any gear-head should find it easy enough to maintain it on their own.
Totally going to sell my used Volvo and get this car for the same price. It efficient and fun at the same time, I always wanted a vehicle with center drive and this fits perfectly
4:16 sounds like this would be a really great sort of bmw e30-esque experience, direct connection which most modern cars totally lack swap in a much more powerful engine and this thing could be one HELL of a canyon carver and feel damn good doing it
It might be a fun canyon carver but not a fast one. 3-wheeled vehicles handle worse than both motorcycles and cars. It's the traction of a motorcycle combined with the weight of a car, ie. the worst of both. However, this isn't designed to for that anyway and I'm sure the aftermarket will be huge if this thing gets released, making it fun nonetheless.
I want one because if it succeeds, we are in the direction to saving resources. All of us see everyone going to work in V8s, SUBs, huge trucks SOLO! Seriously? This would make sense and get the big dawgs to release their versions, I'm excited.
I've wanted to get a street bike to have a new vehicle at a lower cost, but I wouldn't be able to drive it year-round because of the cold weather. The Elio is the answer.
Wait till the Turbo kits come out for this. I hear aftermarket companies have it already in the works . That is going to be a blast. And because it is a motorcycle, the insurance will be cheap. Not sure where the engines will be made, but I know they are using a engineering company in Germany that works BMW and Mercedes.
I have a 300cc Motorcycle and my insurance is $40 a month (I have no accidents or tickets on my record). The Elio is 900cc. I just hope the insurance company's catch up and adjust for this otherwise you may end up paying over $100 per month... Also those new to riding will be spending even more. (I started out paying $50)
Anthony Malin The insurance will be cheap because when you peel it off of the grill of an F250 it'll only cost them 7K to replace it plus your funeral costs.
Pooh Davis 5 star crash rating buddy. The F250 will punt it like a football while the F250 falls apart from all the rust it has accumulated on the frame, brake lines, cab and bed. Perhaps the bed will break off sailing it into the cab decapitating the driver. What a shame. A few northern winters and all you have to show is a pile of rust and $45.000 gone out your bank account. FORD Rust Tough. Nice truck until the rust reaper comes a calling.
Anthony Malin Not talking about how long a vehicle will last...try to follow along with the rest of the class. This thing is a glorified 3 wheel motorcycle, there are snowmobiles that are close in weight, my boat trailer weighs more. It doesn't matter if the shell will stay in tact after a 20 mph hit better than a Volvo, it's 100% irrelevant. We're talking about a 1200 pound car living in harmony with the big heavy beasts that roam the roads. I'm tickled to death that you want to economize, save the planet and spend less money. Fact is though, if a 2500 to 3500 pound vehicle runs a red light and hits you broadside at 35+ mph, you're going to roll and flip to such a degree that you'll be a scrambled egg inside that dinky thing. You might survive if you were in something had had decent mass. It's really very simple but you'll never absorb it until you take off those rose colored glasses.
***** They said right in the video that it's classed as a motorcycle. 3-wheel motorcycle which means whether or not you need a motorcycle license is going to vary by state. For example in CA I believe all you need is a regular car license. In FL you need a motorcycle license. Some states like VA have a special 3-wheel motorcycle-type license (or you can use a normal full motorcycle license). Etc... I think the Can-Am website has a list of the requirements by state.
He misspoke. The engine in the P4 he was driving is not a prototype engine. It's just an old Geo Metro 3cyl that they dropped in it so it can be driven. As I write this they are making prototype parts of the real engine. I can't wait to hear what it sounds like!
Elio Motors has said that once it is out in the US and they finish building all Elio Stores and have the business running state-side, they will start moving towards international sales. I would say maybe 3+ years... :/
I made a 5100 mile trip in u.s. , on a non stop trip about 200 miles on that journey going 60 mph no AC running, level highway (no hills) at a constant speed. I did get 44 mpg, sorry if you do not believe that, check it out other people claim more than that. my friend has a cla250 4 matic that gets 45mpg, I was driving so I wittnessed that
I had sludge in my 9 year old Cavalier.Uncle is a mechanic with 50 years.Told me to buy MARVEL MYSTERY OIL from Wally Mart. Put 4 OZS in full gas tank and 12OZ in oil at change.45 days later milage goes up from top oil effect on compression and engine quiets and oil sludge dissolves slowly.I still use Marvel as I went from 36-43 on highway at 100 K cruise.
Lowell Thompson I think I will be able to rig a sleeping platform for traveling in the ELIO. A light tow trailer while make it a motorcycle / tent motel without bed bugs /and camping traveller.
***** I believe so. They are currently trying to get it classified as an autocycle, whatever that means. I won't advertise on Autoblog's UA-cam page, but search for some more recent videos and they go more in-depth about what this means as a motorcycle.
It is NOT considered a motorcyle amongst the folks with brains. Irregardless of what you call it, in all states (except perhaps one or two still) there are no connections between driving this vehicle and driving a mororcycle, legally speaking. Idiots keep making stupid statements about this car and motorcycles.
size isnt an issue, its the weight of two people and parts/tools/groceries that would make it around 600. Ill go ahead and assume you know what your talking about in the power of the car though. still have my hopes up for this car.
Ultrakill I want glow in the dark reflective like they have on police cars. It should be visible at night even without the lights on. All cars should be.
These elios will be great after about 5-6 years when i can buy one used for $1000. I'll stick with my current small car for now. I won't save any money because of the cost of the vehicle. Not for me atm. but cool. But if your one of those people that must have everything new then go for it.
While it gets great milage, your giving up alot of comfort. This thing would beat you to death on a trip more then 20 miles or so. Great for short trips though. Sounds noisy too. Needs better muffler.
the prototype driven has a geo metro motor in it. why would they say "the motor inside is a prototype" Elio pass on false info?,, cuz they sure as hell allowed it
JDM Dragon Yeah no problem, also I just watched their first press conference video you can find on UA-cam and Elio also mentions that it is dangerous wearing both a seatbelt and a helmet (ala Dale Earnhardt) which I did not even think of.
This isn't a car, so it shouldn't be compared to one. It IS a motorcycle, just heavily suped up and safer. Elio is right, nobody who wants a car is going to buy this. I see this as something that people that either want a motorcycle but don't like the dangers involved or have a motorcycle but hate driving it in bad weather. I'll take my Prius over this any day.
wateriestfire I had a Prius, I never got it paid off so the payments were several hundred dollars a month; the savings in gas never kicked in. With this car, they give you the keys and a $300 credit limit credit card; when you buy gas, they triple the amount of the gas sale and that is put on the card and is your car payment. If you travel less, your payments will be less and will take longer to pay off the car; travel more, paid off sooner. It's a win-win situation that is very impressive financially. I'd buy this way before I bought another car of any kind. I don't need to move kids or lumber around, just me and groceries.
wateriestfire quote" This isn't a car, so it shouldn't be compared to one. It IS a motorcycle, " By that same logic, if you add an InstaTrike kit to a motorcycle, which is 2 additional wheels, you now have a CAR ! Sorry buddy, this is a 3 wheel car, tagged as a MC.

Paul Elio mentioned some time ago that he was already thinking electrification. If so, this would clearly be the first affordable electric vehicle, excepting golf carts. It has enormous advantages over anything built by billionaire Elon Musk, who pretends that he is trying to electrify the automobile. He's doing what he's always done - making billions at the public's expense. Paul Elio has figured out how to make a car very energy efficient, the prime requisite for an affordable electric car, given the high cost of batteries.
I really want to see how this thing drives at night. Plus, I need updates on residential state DMV guidelines on this sweet ride. Nvm, saw updates here: www.eliomotors.com/making-progress-legislative-update-21315/
It depends on how you measure efficiency. If you are measuring moving the total mass, then yes it is about the same as most cars. If you measure efficiency in the form of getting the driver to their location and back, then it is significantly more efficient than a regular car. Ultimately this is an enclosed three wheel motorcycle. Great idea.
This tricycle puts the rear tire in the oil spill part of road it! Only the two fronts are in the correct position on road..well trained motorcycle riders know to steer clear of the oil on the road..and keep both wheels in the tire ruts of the highway. Once the back tire on that thing get full of car fluids (coolant, brake fluid, power steering, transmission oil) along with motor oil..its lights out..you have been warned. I'm safer on two wheels.
Abel Villanueva If the drip strip were that bad, I'd have to hang up my helmet. Have you ever walked out onto a road and tested it yourself ?? It's more of a stain.
Abel Villanueva This car is front wheel drive just so you know did not hear about it in this video. Chris fix's channel post his test drive not to long ago.
TIMEtoRIDE900 maybe in you city it's a stain but I'm in los angeles..traffic here heavy..extremely heavy. I'd like to see you walk out on the road here.
Raising the base price from $6800 to $7300 should make a lot of people plunk down a deposit for something that will probably never be built. Might be smarter to by the Elio clothes, at least it would be a good souvenir of how you threw your money away Wonder how many more base price and option price increases there will be before the thing goes into preoduction. Suckers!
I have been reading about this company now for the past few years. The more I read, the more obvious it becomes (to me) that this company may NEVER produce a single car/ If it does, you better get one fast because from what I read, It may cost $500 million to get this plant running. At $1000 profit per car, they need to sell 400,000 to break even, plus labor, utilities, insurances and a million other things. I'm 99% sure this won't work...
It won't be a profit of just $1000 per car because many first adopters will be wealthy people who opt for many options, which cost extra.. Also you are looking at it from a very short-term view and your short-term view is wrong. First they are going to produce 250,000 per year. At that rate they will make $250 million per year, if nobody buys the options. So lets say they make enough profits in 2 years to cover their start up costs... There are over 300 million people in the USA alone. That means to break even only 0.167% (500000/300000000) of the population has to buy one.... I think they will be ok.
Georgeqaws How much you want to bet? This is NOT a car for the masses. It appeals to young individuals, college students and those who want ultra efficiency. There are cars on the market now that pretty much do the same thing at a slightly higher price that people DO NOT WANT TO OWN. I will buy one if it's safe. If not, I won't.
Georgeqaws Where do you get the 250,000 number? That's 250,000 divided by 365 gives you a production number of 685 cars per day or 43 an hour. If they can do that, I'll buy two. It's NEVER going to happen... I'd be surprised if they sell 15,000 a year. Then what profit do you need per car? I like this car, but have to be reasonable. Pep Boys will be the service center? For $8000 I can buy a GREAT used car as well. It seems unreasonable, unless it is costing them LESS than $4000 to build each car.
In the video Elio (the founder) said that they plan to produce 250,000 units a year. Yes you can buy a great used car for $8000, but it will cost you a lot more to run and maintain that vehicle compared to an elio. The low cost is the entire point of this vehicle...
Great concept and well done. So the VW claims 240mpg at 50k plus cost and the Elio 84mpg at a mere $6800 - I can buy a ton of fuel for 43,000 dollars - Elio make more sense and is American made. I think the Elio is a sure winner!

What kind of headlights will it have?
I LOVE IT! This would fit the bill for my short drive to work and let the big Suburban (1997) go and buy this thing BRAND NEW!
So there's no rear-view mirror? Reminds me of a Can-am motorcycle with a roof, still impressed, though.
Why not paint the rest of the back of it? Or like usual will that be the GT version?
I wonder if the colour of the Elio here , is the Ontario Orange ?
I really fucking want one of these.
How does it go through Mountain roads?
Can I person drive it in the CA carpool lanes?
My point is that the government shouldn't make anything mandatory or illegal, unless it is for safety for others.
It screams for an electric drive train or at least a hybrid system
now im all for the car my #1bugaboo is the fact that the seats are back to back which will eliminate road head

iam in mich dies if have a heater?

Are there any new cars without heaters?
I want the silver one.
who do i call ?
I have a yaris and i still want one, got my order in.
Up to 44MPG

I did get 44 mpg, sorry if you do not believe that, check it out other people claim more than that. my friend has a cla250 4 matic that gets 45mpg, I was driving so I wittnessed that
did not empty tank, drove 200 miles and refilled. sorry that may not work for you.

I'd buy one and eventually will when they are available. For $6800 it's cheaper than a new motorcycle!
wow - a new small hatch in this country is around 6 grand - I would defiantly have an Elio for 3 grand ..... when can I get one here ? UK
Since it's considered a motorcycle. Would I need my Motorcycle license in order to drive this?

still cant believe that no one has tested it with an extra 600lbs going up hill. I want to see a video of it.
The car has enough power to exceed 105 MPH. I think it can handle a hill with a couple of extremely overweight occupants.

I wanna turbo-sport version of that car for 12000 with same hwy mpg pls
Ha I noticed he said "pre order" and Paul makes sure to say reservation. Any money is not a guarantee of receiving a vehicle.

Is this car good for picking up the ladies?
Yeah, you need to say something like "hey baby, I'm Maverick, wanna be my goose?" ;-)
Mephistopheles019 lol! I died!
Give it 90hp quiet out that engine noise, Radio, AC, consider power steering option. That would be worth a couple grand extra to me.
the prototype driven has a geo metro motor in it. why would they say "the motor inside is a prototype" Elio pass on false info?,, cuz they sure as hell allowed it
in this case: prototype = not a production part. They needed something to get the test mule moving while they engineer the "real" powerplant.
How tall are you? How's the leg room in it?
Why would it be unsafe to wear a helmet?

IT IS NOT A CAR!!!!....stop calling it a car!!!!......IT IS A MOTORCYCLE!!!!
Said no one ever.
Medieval Blast except the people in the video
atcred3 Yes, they're wrong. It is indeed a motorcycle.
Suckers!
elio should replace their video with this one, elios video is so cheesy and forced I didn't trust anything they said. this was more helpful
That logo needs to go, first thing I would remove if I had this vehicle.
Ummm, yea... And it doesn't even have a rear window.
motorcycles don't need rear windows! ;-)
Georgeqaws you forgot to mention motorcycle insurance is cheap as shit.
Presenter is hot
those front wheels sticking out...not good, and not nice.
Show us your design that would be safe with such a narrow vehicle.
Jeremy Li I like the roadsteresqueness of it ... Similar to the Plymouth (Dodge) Prowler ...
This is good if you are tree hugger, but for the rest of us this is kinda of a joke.
loud interior .
Yawn, delayed again
too bad it will never sell just like the aptera never did.
looks like a wannabe T-REX 16s
Heavier than a motorcycle, but twice as good on gas. Ugly look though.
Not ugly in my opinion.
