  • About Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and now the war between Israel and Hamas, people across the globe are voicing their opinions on social media. This can end in tribalism, polarization and dehumanizing narratives. Author Ben Sheehan’s viral Instagram post called for greater compassion and nuance in response, and he joins the show to discuss the dangers of propaganda on social media.

There’s a case to be made, for saying that American education has devolved into what other institutions have historically been: a method of reinforcing the ideas and values of the ruling class and their political projects, in other words a way of spreading their propaganda. This is the reason why the right wing want vouchers and private and charter schools everywhere, and why we fund schools with property tax money. There’s a reason why schools were never “equal but separate” in the south. There’s a reason why kids can get gunned down by n schools and we do nothing.

As an observer, I have the impression that the USA being the no. one country in the world, many citizens assume they know better than most about the world. It shows how just being a privileged, free loudmouth can reveal that lazy brains but buck-hungry desires can do a lot of harm. My anxiety about the Israel-Hamas conflict is that in that region overall, conflicts and wars have raged off and on for thousands of years. It seems the generational hurts, pains, and hate just keep piling on. To care deeply so the conflicting parties will heal will need so much work and commitment, and for both to want to heal. To worsen the situation is that Judaic, Christian, and Muslim dogmatism is baked right into the soil and seeps through the nerves. So, Ben Sheehan has a very valid view that we should take it as a challenge to act proactively, intelligently, and compassionately.

Ben is so logical. It's hard to believe it has taken so long since the war started to hear a good thoughtful humane take on humanity. Propaganda rules but few understand the full truth about anything and it's a continuing learning experience to keep up with news and decipher the most correct outlook and challenge your own views. A mandatory course in logic in schools would be nice. It's not just Americans of course. Pew Polls show most others have many blind spots. The US is just loud and upfront about their ignorance.

I think his definition of propaganda is excellent: “Something the makes a person lose empathy for a group of people”. I’m sure that doesn’t describe all propaganda, but certainly most of it.
The media needs to work harder at finding reasonable people to speak for a group that we are essentially told to hate. Here is an example of two kind and reasonable people: I saw a video years ago about a Jewish Israeli woman working with an Arab Israeli woman to help homeless cats in Jerusalem. The Jewish woman apparently speaks Arabic with her friend as they work to save homeless cats. It was wonderful to see. I should try to see if it’s still on UA-cam.

It is important to separate the individual from the "government" or those who happen to have the ruling power over an area. Hamas does not represent all Palestinians. Hamas currently has power over Gaza, but does not speak for all Palestinians. Like wise, the Israeli government and it's policies, do not speak for all Israelis or Jews. The enemy is not innocent citizens and residents of the area.

The enemy is Iran. Without weapons , it would be easier to have peace and true negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis with Qatar as the mediator.
The Palestinians already have Gaza , Egypt , Syria, Lebanon ,Jordan and parts of the West Bank. I do not know what else Palestinians would want for land.

Our country and its horrific treatment of the Native people of America has only just recently been revealed fully and it is painful to know the truth. I think the backlash came from the unequivocal backing of the Israeli government. People took any questioning or criticism of the Israeli government meant we were antisemitic, and that isn't true. Criticizing the USA and it's policies isn't anti-American. Nobody gets a full pass. I think that's why the Free Palestine voices became louder.
Yes, OF COURSE, the strike from Hamas was horrific. I can understand why there is lashing out for Palestinian plight of occupation and aparthied, lack of resources and walled in--no free movement. Who wouldn't fight what is unjust? I understand why Israelis are fearful for their survival, and wanting to control the region for their safety.
No one in the USA was calling for ceasefire. (I still don't hear it.( No one was calling to not decimate the innocents. There were just a simplification of bad guys and good guys. Name calling of Terrorists on one side, with no counter-name of terror on the other. The complete pro-Israel propaganda machine in the USA started working overtime. We fund Israel at 3.44 billion a year. For their safety, but our silence on the plight of Palestinians is a crime of complicity. We can be against governments and their policies. That most certainly doesn't mean we are against citizens of those governments.
War is not the answer. We must find a path to peace. Most people are loving. Most people are good. Most people just want to live freely in safety, with roofs over their heads, food to eat, and water to drink. On all sides they are crying for their children, their mothers, their fathers, their grandparents, their neighbors. These aren't the people causing this. We are witnessing man's inhumanity to man.

Honestly, I'm always afraid to show public compassion for the Palestinians, so I very much appreciated this interview. I have at least some understanding of this situation, and over the decades have always expected one terrorist group or another to rise up, ostensibly, as reactionary movements against oppression. And whether sooner or later, they do. It can't be either condoned or justified, but until the people of Palestine are not suffering at the hands of the Israeli government/military, I don't see how this will ever end. Oppression always leads to violence. It's not a matter of if, but when.
My heart breaks for all of the Israeli and Palestinian civilians who are suffering. My one wish is that people learn to place themselves in the shoes of others and ask the question, "what would I do?"

@@twelvecatsinatrenchcoat It is, however oppression when you are denied the basic rights and freedoms that every human being deserves, is it not? Do you also approve of Israel seizing land from Palestinians? Land that has been in the hands of those Palestinian families for generations? Would that be something that you would tolerate without objection? Do you feel it is okay that Palestinians, many of whom dislike Hamas as much as Israeli's do, are treated as though they are inferior? Do you believe apartheid is rational or justified in any situation? Historically, such tactics never work, and only lead to conflict. Why should this be any different?
Too many people are reacting to propaganda, and not enough of us are searching out the organizations, such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch to see what's really happening. These organizations make it there job to investigate and report on human rights violations, including what's happened for decades in Gaza/Israel.
It is well beyond "keeping people at arms length." Perhaps if we experienced it ourselves, we might have a better understanding of each side.
As I stated originally, my heart goes out to all people who are currently losing their basic human rights, or whose lives are threatened by the violence that so often seems to erupt around such issues. Our governing bodies are failing everywhere, and too many innocent people are paying the price.

As someone who conducts research about propaganda, and seems to be a fairly intelligent person, I would be surprised if it escaped from his eyes, as it was getting to be ridiculous towards the end (Oct 7th).
    Two possible conclusions would be:
    1. He didn't realise.
    2. He did realise it and he is a lefty that doesn't like the government, and he preferred to make propaganda himself!
