- In this video I discuss one of the best and least destructive methods for prepping a Set Neck to be joined to the body.
These necks are rough cut and chiseled. It is up to the builder to fine tune them to the body.

Just started working on mine 2 days ago. There was a good bit of wiggle in the neck joint area so this sandpaper trick will help out. I've assembled a few Carvin bass kits over the years but they were bolt on necks. This is my first set neck and I don't want to screw it up!
I look forward to the next installment.
I plan on getting one of these kits hopefully.
@Jacob Garrison I agree. Plus you don't have to pay for a bunch of trashy hardware and electronics, that will never be used.
Definitely check Precision guitar, I'm eyeballing their kits too.
IamBucketdotcom their 335 has gotten very pricey. Is the stew Mac kit Chinese?
@@tyronejackson4509 I can only speculate that they are. The more you look at this specific one that I'm building, the more it looks like it was a cheaply made rush job.
What grit sandpaper are you using? Excited to see how it turns out!
For those joints I'm using 120grit.
An entire video dedicated to you sanding oh so little just to close a gap....
Just wondering… if you’re taking material off of each side, aren’t you leaving a high spot in the middle?
Thanks for watching! There was not a lot of work needed in the heel of the neck/middle areas. If I recall correctly I did hit the heel/block with a quick 120 grit off camera to be safe and give a better grabbing surface for the glue.
It was fairly ill fitting on the sides where I used to sandpaper strips to true it up. I checked for high spots and wiggling before the glueing to be safe!
@@iambucketdotcom_official Thank you for clarifying! I'm enjoying the series.
I’ve just got this kit and have a gap between the bottom of the neck and the edge of the trim of the body of about 2mm. Will this method remove too much material and in so doing drop the neck too far relative to the body for later tuning /playability
Hi Sorry! I somehow missed this. You shouldn't have to worry about removing too much material, I would estimate mine was about 1.5mm to 1.75mm, So almost as much as yours. I minimally touched the horn/heel that fits into the pocket. Most of the trimming was done on the sides to allow it to drop into place better.
I have the same concern it fits well at the guitar top but a bigger gap in the rear, I would small block sand but I'm wondering if it should be routed down?
That is a rather "Rougth"neck...if I was paying stewmac prices I would have expected no chips missing in the wood ...also the fit into the body is slopy
Those bucks joints are not an accurate fit. They should be a little tighter fit. Not the best or most precision kits out there. Imo...😁
