    I'd love to hear more about your experience with the nut...if you would appease me. 🙂 Do you know what the nut width is? Graphtech has a lot of pre-cut nut options (although like you said there are many things like string spacing to consider). I'm wondering if you tried all the ones in the ball-park of this one. Thanks!

    • @iambucketdotcom_official
      @iambucketdotcom_official 8 місяців тому

      I tried a few Graphtechs and just couldn't find the right one. I ended up carving a bone nut that I didn't do a great job on as my first one. Around July I finally cut a new one and replaced it when I did some other maintenance (fingerboard oiling, shes been getting lots of play and little maintenance, trying to be better about it) Anyway. I ended up using digital calipers, and the plastic nut it came with, to get the spacing needed cut into the new nut. I'm in the middle of a move or I'd make an updated video.

    Hi. I see you used a 12" radius block on the frets. However I noticed that the StewMac instructions say to use a 16" block. Can you confirm what the fretboard radius is on these kits? Thanks in advance!

    • @iambucketdotcom_official

      I used radius gauges to find what the radius of the neck was prior to grabbing the block... I also learned through this process waht's on the box isn't necessarily what's in the kit... Your results may vary.

      @@iambucketdotcom_official thank you for the response! I actually got a reply from StewMac & they said it was 16”, but who knows if they actually checked or just regurgitated a response. It just doesn’t make sense that they would make a “335” guitar & not use the traditional 12” radius.

    I can't decide it's I'm going to build one of those scraper tools or use my thumb. It's the one job I've never done on a guitar. I usually don't like bindings, but a guitar I'm restoring has em, so now it's time. That tool certainly looks like a great way to scrape and avoid cutting in the wood.

      I like to use NEVR-DULL on shiny pieces. Since there is no tarnishing, there is no need to use steel wool (I'd use 0000 Steel wool if tarnished, but not on the pickups). I'll use some lightly diluted denatured alcohol on a QTiP to remove hand oils, then NEVR-DULL to give it a shine. Fret erasers for the frets, followed by some polishing compound on a dremel or nevr-dull if I do it fully by hand.

      Thanks for watching! There was not a lot of work needed in the heel of the neck/middle areas. @@iambucketdotcom_official That’s encouraging. I’ve switched all of my guitars to nitro cellulose or true oil finished. My 335 is the last one, currently an Epi inspired by Gibson. He plays like a dream but I want my guitars to wear in, I’m in my early 30s and would love to spend a lifetime making them my own. Sadly most every 335 model seem to be poly finished unless it’s a true Gibson/Heritage, or Eastman. But the Eastmans have weird body shapes, I want the standard Mickey Mouse ears and large body. Did you sand between sanding sealer coats? I read where you shouldn’t use the sealant on stains because you may sand away the stain. I was very impressed with the outcome of the true oil process. Just want the sanding sealer clarified. Thanks

    • @iambucketdotcom_official
      @iambucketdotcom_official 2 роки тому

      I was worried about this too. There was a bit of color bleeding initially, but that was on me for not allowing the sealer enough time to sit before staining. I ended up sanding down again, sealing, waiting a couple days, and then started the dye process. It worked out much better. Thinning my dyes with denatured alcohol definitely helped over water thinning.
