Really great advice. If I had one thing to say to young(er) people it would be this: pay attention to your dental hygiene. Paying for professional dental hygiene appointments in your 20s, 30s, and 40s is an investment that will pay dividends in terms of comfort, happiness, and physical well-being far out of proportion to the money spent. No matter how well you brush and floss, you still need to regularly get professional dental hygiene appointments. Your hygienist will not only get your teeth spotlessly clean, but they'll also be able to identify potential problems long before they cause irreparable problems. And this is an important point: IRREPARABLE damage can happen to your gums and jaw bone tissue if you allow tartar to remain in place. On a microscopic scale, think about tartar as tiny saw blades constantly irritating your soft gum tissue, leading to inflammation. Once inflamed, the infection can lead to loss a jaw bone tissue. And this cannot be repaired or replaced. 21st century dental medicine is a truly fantastic gift. Take advantage of it. If you do, you may well live into your later years free of the misery of tooth loss, dentures, bleeding gums, etc. that bedevil so many middle-aged and older people today. I had to have a root planing/deep clean treatment last year, but it was especially bad in this area because I have a fixed retainer which has been in place since my teens, and I’m 40 years old now. It was so hard to floss there that I just didn’t even try. Now I am diligent about brushing/flossing after I eat and using the interdental flossers in this area.
I don't brush my teeth often enough bc depression and ADHD but I also have a permanent retainer on the inside of my bottom teeth and when I try to brush there, the toothbrush handle hits my top teeth so instead of getting that 0⁰ angle which would be best for getting plaque off, it's like 10-20⁰ 😭 I do use interdental brushes when I'm able to and they seem to help a bit
yesss every little bit helps!!! you are doing great! also, I have a "how to clean your teeth with a permanent retainer" video coming soon as well! hopefully it will give you even more tips and tricks on reaching that difficult spot!
Great information. What I can't get my head around is the EXORBADENT cost of all dental services!! I don't know who the greediest people are: dentists, vets, or lawyers. It's getting ridiculous.
@@TeethTalk Yes, I know that. However, the dentists charge EVERYONE the same stupid high rates, even we folks who have *no insurance.* The dentists could fix that if they wanted to. They simply could care less. I hate when greedy people paint us all with the same brush. On a brighter note, I loved your video 😉. I'm already doing 90% of what you described. Many thanks for the great info. Ironically, you may have saved me from more ridiculous dental fees - without insurance!!
If you have dental insurance, they pay for 2 cleanings per year. If you don't have dental insurance, take very good care of your teeth by properly brushing and flossing a half hour after every meal and brushing away the sticky stuff as soon as you wake up in the morning. When brushing and flossing before bedtime use a Tuft brush or Sulcabrush to clean teeth along the gumline, between teeth, and any places a regular toothbrush can't reach (crooked teeth) . I have a friend that doesn't go to the dentist but brushes a half hour after every meal and flosses twice a day (once after breakfast and once before bedtime). Only before bedtime does he use the Tuft brush and Sulcabrush. He also uses a tongue scraper before breakfast and before he goes to bed. He hadn't been to the dentist in over ten years. Not even for a cleaning. I offered to pay for the cleaning and he agreed. The dental hygienist couldn't believe he hadn't had a cleaning in over 10 years. He only needed minor cleaning, so I guess he's good for another 10 years. It's also about one's diet because he only drinks water and never eats sweets or things with sugar.
Thank you for this informative video, Whitney. One major suggestion you forgot to mention is to reduce the intake of refined sugar, as biofilms thrive on the stuff...
I don't know if this works for everyone, but I floss in the shower. It cuts down on "forgetting" to do it, because for one thing it is a good excuse to stay in the shower a bit longer. And thanks for the tip about brushing first thing in the morning.
I have this issue with my back bottom teeth. my dental hygienist just told me to brush there longer. I had to get a harder toothbrush head for my sonicare electric toothbrush AND i have to use it longer than usual. It's so weird.
If you drink coffee with cream and sugar in the morning and aren't able to brush your teeth after you're done drinking coffee, put some warm water in your mouth and swish it around for 15 seconds and spit it out. Do this 2 to 3 times. On the last time, while the warm water is still in your mouth, use the tip of your tongue to rub against the inside of the bottom teeth. This is not as good as brushing but it helped me prevent that tartar buildup from drinking coffee with cream and sugar. If you drink your coffee black (without cream or sugar), then you don't have to do this. If you drink sugary soft drinks like Cola, then I would use this trick also. It amazed me that something so simple, could prevent the tartar buildup.
Super interesting that you say to brush before eating- I’ve spent 30yrs being told to do it after to get rid of food debris. Would I be correct in assuming this is to protect the teeth against what you’re eating?

I got some heavy build up there from drinking tea for a year. I drank tea 2 times per day for a year and it made that area behind my lower teeth look yellow-green. I've got a lot of it cleared up but still have work to do. I don't drink tea anymore. Tea will stain your teeth a lot worse than coffee.

I discovered xylitol right after having a dental cleaning. I would develop plaque immediately after a cleaning. Why? Because my dentist removed my entire mouth microbiome while at my dental cleaning. She suggested having a deep cleaning every three months. Well nine months later no plaque???? Why???? Because I didn’t go back to my dentist. Instead chewed Pure gum after meals about six pieces a day. At night I used Closys ultra sensitive mouth rinse after brushing and I 0:15 never flossed in nine months. I have gum recession due to the trauma your gums go through when flossing or using those dental flossers with bristles. My two bottom front teeth were loose and I was told they would only get looser. Guess what they are no longer loose. My gums are healing due to me using my toothbrush bristles to massage my gums. I now have less gum recession around those two loose teeth. Oh I I healed a cavity with my own saliva. Yes when you chew xylitol gum you can fill a cavity that hasn’t progressed through the dentin of your tooth. Do you recommend this and does it make a difference which style it is?
I spend extra time and effort in this area and it’s where I have the most gum recession now😬 I brush, floss, use inter-proximal brushes, use that pointy rubber tip thingy, and periodically use a dental scaler if I see plaque.

Thanks to your videos I wash my teeth 2x a day, mouthwash 2x, and I use dental floss 1x before bed! My teeth are much cleaner and my mouth smells nicer!🎉❤🎉
It’s great once you get the hang of it. I still floss regularly but there is a lot less buildup using the water flosser, so I don’t have to be as religious about regular flossing but it’s not a complete replacement. Just be sure to follow the instructions as a first time user so you don’t flood your entire bathroom like I did 😅These things are much more powerful than they look.
Hi whitney. I just discovered i have a broken tooth in the back. I tried to call a dentist but its the weekend. Crazy thing is i never felt tooth sensitivity. I been using floride rinse every day. Now im nervous how long i had this. Cause i can see a hole. Its like orange looking. I also floss but i guess this molar i have been neglecting. I brush my teeth but not as much as i should, and i usually use just water on the brush. Curious if ive been having these headaches from this, i thought were stress tension headaches. Might have been a sinus infection all along.
Whitney, I used to use dental picks. But the other day I did floss with regular dental floss & my gums were bleeding in more than two places. I did floss correctly with regular dental floss too. I guess it is better to floss with regular dental floss. In a few days or weeks the bleeding should stop, correct?
Saliva is the most important part of a healthy biome and cleans your teeth. Saliva is what you want to promote to have a healthy microbiome. "Saliva, or “spit”, is an extracellular fluid produced by the salivary glands in the mouth. Saliva carries important enzymes that break down food particles, which is the first stage of the digestion process. It also delivers minerals and other nutrients to your teeth that teeth use to remineralize"
I get the most tartar behind my low front teeth, so my dentist recommended those tiny brushes, and I think I got the smallest size, or maybe they didn't have any smaller, but it still can't go through my teeth, it collapses 😂 sometimes even the floss gets stuck for a second
is it normal that lateral incisors are placed a bit behind your central incisors, shouldnt they be side by side like no one is placed a tiny bit behind the other
3:11 - Oh man, my toothbrush doesn't fit sideways like that lol. Jaw too narrow. Makes it hard to get the bristles directed at the gum-line at the right angle. BUT, that's where my new electric toothbrush comes in that I'll be trying later.
I have to use floss picks in the button front teeth as there is a small gap that I can’t get to with interdental brushes. Any good brands that carry micro sized ones?
1. Why use just water in the morning before breakfast. What does that do? 2. When you mentioned about flossing after eating high carb snacks, do you have to wait 30 minutes to floss?
Only if you're brushing before AND after breakfast -- some people prefer to not have the toothpaste in their mouth prior to eating/drinking because they feel the minty taste does not go away. I've never had that problem though! And I personally don't wait 30 mins to floss -- but always ask your individual dental provider what they feel is best for your individual mouth!
@@TeethTalk I asked because I _do_ make the effort to try and brush and I was thinking of using water and no toothpaste, but I wasn't sure! I wasn't sure if the rule for brushing was the same for flossing!
ive removed tartar by myself (no instrument just nail and patience) ive had years of neglect toward my teeth due to deppresion and yet i had like nearly no tartar only three bottom tooths and it was only at the bottom of them. I removed it in like in 20 min. Is there a reason i didnt have a lot of buildup?
@@TeethTalk okay but I've been seeing your videos since the start and i thought it'll help me if you'll make a video about that problem but it's fine🤗thank you so much for helping me out 💞
Following an extremely low carb keto or carnivore diet has eliminated this problem for me. In Fact sometimes a floss pick will dislodge any plaque if I have it because it’s so weak.

My poor mother has periodontist and has already lost 8 teeth and she’s loosing more… she’s in her 40’s so she’s not that old yet 😅 she is suppose to receive deep cleanings every 3 months but they are so incredibly expensive that she cannot afford to do it. 😢
Her nutrition sounds bad. I mean, really bad. Or she's eating too much sugar and starch. If she's taking good care of her teeth and she still has so much trouble, then it's her diet, one way or another.

Thanks to your videos I wash my teeth 2x a day, mouthwash 2x, and I use dental floss 1x before bed! My teeth are much cleaner and my mouth smells nicer!🎉❤🎉
yessss!!!! keep up the great work! wishing you continued dental health!
@@TeethTalk Thank you so much for the encouragement! I’ll keep it going and follow your advices! God bless you!🙏🏻🎉
How about using a water pick?
yess they help so much as well! here's a video of mine that goes over water flossing: ua-cam.com/video/yaZtNAVZ1Ao/v-deo.html
I should floss with an up & down motion, correct?😢
Need to press hard enough so the floss goes around the tooth. Mine don't bleed when I switch to regular floss occasionally hmm
Whitney!!! Yesss! Those front lower teeth can be tricky!!
the MOST common area for plaque and tartar buildup! PS I love seeing the gray tooth! :)

I'm about to get clear aligners to straighten my teeth. Any tips on oral hygiene with clear aligners? thx

What toothbrushes do you recommend? I keep trying different ones and I only occasionally find one I like.
here's my favorite ones in 2024 -- hope this helps: ua-cam.com/video/qiM0TRoNu-g/v-deo.html
The only thing that helped me was using Listerine mouthwash(original w/alcohol), after brushing.
Thank you for making these vids. They're very informative.
Go Cubs go!
Can I get rid of plaque without deep cleaning?
Thank you for the video 😊
You are the cutest dental hygenist!
I get the most tartar behind my low front teeth, so my dentist recommended those tiny brushes, and I think I got the smallest size, or maybe they didn't have any smaller, but it still can't go through my teeth, it collapses 😂 sometimes even the floss gets stuck for a second
Saliva secretion has reduced recently in my case, what could be the reason...I feel my mouth dried up on waking up...
oh no! here's my dry mouth information video -- hope this helps: ua-cam.com/video/lP0P-zduVcQ/v-deo.html
is it normal that lateral incisors are placed a bit behind your central incisors, shouldnt they be side by side like no one is placed a tiny bit behind the other
3:11 - Oh man, my toothbrush doesn't fit sideways like that lol. Jaw too narrow. Makes it hard to get the bristles directed at the gum-line at the right angle. BUT, that's where my new electric toothbrush comes in that I'll be trying later.
I used to use HARD toothbrushes and didn’t get the buildup I now get, when all I can get is MED or SOFT Brushes.
I floss right after eating with floss picks. I don’t get tartar or cavities 🫶🏽
Difference among Plaque Tarter & calculus??
here's my video that explains: ua-cam.com/video/_HiX66SvNF4/v-deo.html hope this helps!
also i said this before and ill say it again you remind me sooo much of jenna marbles! ❤
this makes me SO happy!!! I LOVEDDDD her videos!
I have to use floss picks in the button front teeth as there is a small gap that I can’t get to with interdental brushes. Any good brands that carry micro sized ones?

A water flosser would work pretty good. I use a water flosser and floss every night.
Do you recommend oil pulling?

@@TeethTalk Thankyou so much ☺️ I will watch it for sure
PEACE LOVE TEETH 🦷❤️🩵🪥✨
I brush before breakfast but not before coffee =(
@@TeethTalk
I asked because I _do_ make the effort to try and brush and I was thinking of using water and no toothpaste, but I wasn't sure!
I wasn't sure if the rule for brushing was the same for flossing!
Is it safe to get toothcap om molar tooth??? Won't this procedure damage my adjacent good teeth???
Why would it? I've had caps on four of my molars for over twenty years.
ive removed tartar by myself (no instrument just nail and patience) ive had years of neglect toward my teeth due to deppresion and yet i had like nearly no tartar only three bottom tooths and it was only at the bottom of them. I removed it in like in 20 min. Is there a reason i didnt have a lot of buildup?
How did you do it? Remove the tartar..
@ i had minimal amount of it. I used wood toothpicks cause using metsl is far to dangerous as you can damage yourself far more easily
I finally found a new dentist, unfortunately, their most recent new patient appointment wasn't until August. D:
Hey! Hope you're fine, I wanna consult with you about my teeth can how can i contact you please let me know!

I'll still brush after every meal. I can't wait until bedtime to brush.
My routine isn’t complete without using mouthwash.
How long to wait to eat if you brush before you eat breakfast??
It's recommended to wait 30 minutes!
@@TeethTalkI thought it’s after you eat you wait 30mins? But you can eat straight after brushing?? 😮
Is it true that eating 🍑 can balance your mouth’s PH?
Following an extremely low carb keto or carnivore diet has eliminated this problem for me. In Fact sometimes a floss pick will dislodge any plaque if I have it because it’s so weak.
So true
The same here
Needing cleanings every quarter and getting them pd for - not in same universe
At $150 a pop
Impossible
Brushing teeth, scraping tongue and oil pulling every morning first thing. Thank you, Ayurveda!
2:00 Why not with toothpaste?
Only if you're brushing before AND after breakfast -- some people prefer to not have the toothpaste in their mouth prior to eating/drinking because they feel the minty taste does not go away. I've never had that problem though!
I floss after every meal and before brushing in the morning and at night. It’s a habit I made during my treatment with clear aligners and it has eliminated the tartar build up I used to get on the back of my bottom front teeth. 😊
Are you familiar with xylitol? 🤔

Strong Kate Foster vibes 😂
These same teeth in my mouth are kinda long (gum recession). Everything else is fine. I was using a medium brush. Now I brush gently with a soft toothbrush. A visit to the dentist wouldn't make sense for a little bit of recession. These teeth suck!!
I’ve found a waterpik helped me with gum recession.
Anyone else think this girl is so cute?
Hi from india
hi! thank you so much for watching!

Tartar can be removed with a curved stainless steel needle approx. 1mm thick and sharpened to a pyramid.
Or like.. a specific tooth scaler so you don't accidentally stab your gums with a needle 😮
Also who just has needles hanging around their house? Lol
@@DivineLightPaladin any normal house hold has a sewing set laying around
@@AutodidactEngineer didn't think of those, however I definitely still would not want to stick a needle in my mouth! That's an accident waiting to happen if it gets stuck in some calculus, you press too hard and slip. Maybe if you bent it? Still I'd be worried it's too sharp and might damage enamel more than dedicated tool.
I was a dental assistant. I am a home scaler 😂
Peace love teeth ❤
PLT :)
I chew up a MilkBone every night. Keeps my teeth spotless.

Hi

funny how all those youtube docs talking about teeth problems - have all fake teeth ^^ That means - you can care about ur teeth but you will never have beautifl teeth without invasiv treatment
all my teeth are my own :) here's my video showing: ua-cam.com/video/0Oiq2ofqacQ/v-deo.html hope this helps!
