I’ve only seen one dentist who didn’t have the helpers. He’s old as dirt and very old fashioned, still uses film X-rays, been in the same office for decades, and last I saw was only two days per week, so maybe he’s finally winding down for retirement! He was a wonderful dentist and only went elsewhere because he wouldn’t do dentures nor oral surgery, so I had no choice but to go to the dental school. Really miss that guy, he was AWESOME for simple extractions and fillings!

Yeah! Like automatically saying you need a "Deep Cleaning" vs a "Prophylactic" based solely on not having had a Cleaning in more that 6 months and not on how your gums actually look and how much tartar you actually have (Happened to my husband).
High staff turnover should also be a red flag. If there are new hygienists, assistants and front office every time you see your dentist that should be a red flag.
I actually disagree with this statement. The year that I had breast cancer (!!) I lost 11 of my 15 employees. It was the hardest year of my entire 36 years of practicing dentistry. Each person that left had a really good, unavoidable reason for leaving. Those of us who remained worked incredibly hard to maintain our standard of care and replace the team members we had lost. You can, however, certainly tell a lot by the staff interactions with the doctor. Are people short with one another? Is the doctor short with the staff members? Just remember to not misinterpret focus and intensity, which are desirable when providing any health care, with shortness or snappiness. Dentistry is an intense profession and especially so when we want to do a really, really good job of caring for our teams and patients.
Yes that most often signify a toxic work environment which stems from the dentists. I had my share of working with unbearable dentists- impatient, moody, angry, greedy (no lunch break as to make more money by taking on as many patients as possible). My health was compromised due to this as well. And they do not care. All they care about is their practice and how much money is being made. Would never work at another dental office again.
I have a bad experience, when the dentist allow her assistant to do regular teeth cleaning, she chip one of my porcelan crown on my fron tooth, I was very disappointed because it fell down the next day this was Smiles on Broadway. At Long Branch, NJ.
I'm a dentist, and I agree with all the red flags. Unfortunately, dentistry is very subjective. What may seem to one doctor a cavity too small to need a filling, maybe to another doctor, a cavity worth filling. I see patients all the time that tell me their previous doctor diagnosed them with 10 cavities, when to me, only 4 need to be filled. Some Dentists are conservative, and some are aggressive. Unfortunately, this creates a lot of confusion for patients.
Just went to 2 different places for my annual exam; one said I needed a crown, another said a small filling. I don’t trust any dentists because I suspect that some of them have DEFINITELY taken advantage of me in the past.
OMG. I was just told a couple of weeks ago I had 10 cavities! I said what?!? Everyone was almost too nice. This was only my second visit and I thought finally I found a great practice. The dentist was so friendly and outgoing. I got a crown made in-house. However, I can’t put my finger on it but things started giving me the creeps. Told I needed extensive gum cleaning which was so intense it would be 3-4 visits, pushing implants for a couple of missing teeth that have been missing for decades, multiple xrays. It seemed like they were just trying to milk me dry. Oh, this video addresses no hygenist. Well this was a small practice in a house and the place was crawling with hygenists! They also had three people at the tiny front desk and a financial lady in an office. I thought I was at a car dealership. I left quickly right after they told me to meet with the financial lady. She had the audacity to call my house and unload on my husband about why I left. Somebody has to pay all those employees but it won’t be me.
@@DrMJJr. Yes. My wealthy brother was talked into all these root canals. As he was friends with the dentist, he trusted him. I pray he never has problems. This was pure exploitation.
Biggest red flag in a dentist office. When they quote you a price for work needed to be done that equals out to a house down payment which also includes insurance.
Yup! Got told it was going to be 10k to get a tooth pulled and things that went along with it that I didn't want IE root canal and bridge. When I refused those items the finance person looked at me like I lost my mind to refuse those things. I even told her that's a car...needless to say I'm still with broken tooth and my money.
@@JohnJones-qy5ko well yeah, but she also wanted me to have a root canal, a bridge, i think two fillings, a crown, the laughing gas for my terrified self, and lord only knows what else. all i wanted was the tooth fixed, not all that other stuff, it sounded like she wanted to do a year's construction in my mouth and fix everything all at once. i don't even want a bridge because my friend told me the dentist would literally have to ruin two perfectly good teeth on either side of the broken one just to set the bridge. screw that. all a scam.
1. 0:30 no dental hygienist 2. 0:57 no perio charting 3. 1:45 fast appointments 4. 2:35 xray frequencies 5. 3:45 dirty office - infection control 6. 5:15 bad communication
I went to the same dentist for more than 30 years who never had a hygienist. He did all the cleanings and wanted to keep a small office. His assistant also answered the phone. I still have crowns and fillings that he did decades ago. He was a low profile guy who didn’t care about becoming super rich and I trusted him. He retired and I didn’t get the same care until someone purchased the house next door and his girlfriend was going through dental school. She was already a dentist from a different country so was trained twice and then also received further training out of state. I started going to her and trusted her because we had become friends. They moved to a different city and she opened her own practice. I drive 3 hours to still see her. I went to the dental school for cleanings from a student hygienist but had a visible cavity that wasn’t addressed and I decided that it was worth the drive. I trust her implicitly and we keep in touch, she calls me her American mom because of cultural differences between her American husband’s family and her own and usually share a meal when I am there to catch up in person. I feel fortunate.
And finding out this is nothing about dentistry…..but she thinks it’s she’s fitted the entire dentistry in the smallest circle of dental cleaning and A hygienist.
I think that one that was not mentioned, is when you have some offices that have extremely rude staff. Especially the ones that talk badly about patient. That to me I feel is not only unprofessional. But it shows me what kind of people they are.
My dental hygienist niece warned me there is much poor to sloppy hygienist performance too. She said it did not used to be this way even ten years ago. It was simply not tolerated. Thank you for this! People must be extremely cautious WHERE they go to the dentist!
I prefer a hygenist to clean...I hate a dentist do it one time when they short on staff and he did a TERRIBLE job. He was nervous and my teeth did not feel clean like a usual cleaning
@@lilpoohbear653 Hygienists have extensive training (2yrs) in scaling and polishing teeth. Dentists get a week or so training in Dental School. I once had a dentist clean my teeth and it was not good.
Not a dentist, but at an orthodontist office in the Albany New York area, where they were spreading mononucleosis because of their poor hygiene practices on the open floor plan cubicles. This is a huge multi million dollar private orthodontic Business. Escalade’s and Jaguars parked out back. Needless to say I had to reach out to the health department. They gave my son mono. They would go and open drawers with the dirty gloves, and then come back to the patient’s mouth with the dirty gloves on and put them in the patient’s mouth. They also would clean up and set up for the next patient with the dirty gloves on from the previous patient. I barely could believe my eyes.
I had a dentist tell me once i needed laser treatment for my gums. I denied it and also didnt have the money. Went to a different dentist and I asked him about it. He said, no your gums healthy. You don't need such a treatment! I love that whole office. Its small but great. 😊
Mexican dentist charged me 200 for a root canal with x-ray included and treatment. In the United States it was from 800 to 1,600 with insurance!! Its insane
A former dental assistant told me to be wary of any dentist office that used the word Smile. My insurance changed. The new dentist said I needed $1,400 or work of which not much was covered. I went back to my old, long-time dentist. He said he could only see one small cavity that I needed. I just paid him full price and never went back to the one with "coverage." Stayed with the old dentist until he retired.
Just made me love my dentist, because she has none of these red flags. I see her every 3 months for perio cleanings, and she explains in ways that I can understand everything, and also keeps my anxiety at bay. I absolutely adore her, and it took me years to find a dentist I could trust because I don't like any type of doctors. Thank you for your simple way of letting me know my dentist is a wonderful one!
@@travelinggirl6681 I’ve never been forced to have an x-Ray done outside of the schedule when they should be done. I believe I’ve had a panoramic done. Can’t recall on bite wings.
@@peachescozynook9003 My dentist pushes for bite wings once a year but I have no questionable issues so I think they should be only every 2 or 3 years. Your dentist sounds better than mine.
@@travelinggirl6681 I have a bad history with my oral health. I get x-rays once a year, but that's because with my treatments it's needed. And luckily she understands all my other medical conditions, so she works with all of that as well.
Another red flag is when the front desk person/receptionist constantly changes the dates of your appointments without telling you then tries to charge you a "cancellation fee" for not being to attend an appointment you didn't change and were never informed of the change and that persons tries to blame you. Happened after our regular dentist sold his practice to someone else and all of the staff changed as a result. New receptionist was constantly changing all of our appointments on us without telling us and then blaming us for it. Found a new dentist and haven't had a single issue with this.
Dentist here. I agree with most of the red flags. It is important to note that there is a major dental hygienist shortage right now so a lot of offices do NOT have a hygienist, especially after Covid because so many RDHs quit. Like the video said, if the dentist does a good job with your cleaning, it should be fine. I do a lot of cleanings in my practice. It's nice to just clean teeth especially at the last hour of the day. I've had some of most fun with these appointments because cleanings are super easy compared to everything else I have to do. My patients and I will chat, catch up on life, and goof around. It's great. I used to hate cleanings but now that I'm so busy, doing cleanings is like a nice break from my "actual job." Additionally, we take a lot of x-rays at my practice. The radiation dosage is low and now the ADA guidelines state that patients don't even need lead aprons or thyroid collars. We take routine x-rays to bill out to insurance but sometimes, I will take an additional x-ray and waive the cost because I really need to know what's going on. My time is valuable and I don't feel like wasting it by haggling an x-ray fee with a patient. A lot of people get upset with dentists and dental offices because their insurance sucks. We've had insurances deny patient claims for the dumbest shit and of course, patients get mad at us when we've sent in all the information, x-rays, letters, etc. to their insurance companies. I don't think patients understand that insurance companies are not out to help people and dental insurances, in particular, are the worst.
My dentist came in and looked at my teeth for less than 10 seconds and asked me how I was doing while I was getting my teeth cleaned. Then I saw that my insurance was charged for a detailed dental exam for $400 on top of the cleaning. Something about that just doesn't sit well with me.
I’m 29 and I had periocharting done for the first time last month at my new dentist. You really don’t know what you’re missing out on when you’ve never had the opportunity for proper dental care.
I'm 26 and same thing happened to me last week. They put the thing in my mouth and started reading numbers to another person and I was like oh, wtf is happening.
Love your channel! I’m 31 and lost my dental insurance when I was 23 the prices were outrageous and scared me to not even go in for a visit. I was a single mom of 3 young and turned to smoking cigarettes. That didn’t help at all. It’s been one year since I stopped smoking cigarettes (I used a vape to help) this past Tuesday I had two extractions I have been needing for what feels like forever. I was in so much pain every day… This extraction was the last hurdle and I’m so excited to finish my treatment plan. the surgery helped me tremendously because a dry socket sounds like complete hell so I abide by all the post op rules x1000 Blessed to say no more smoking cigarettes and no vaping!!!❤️
Yes the pain off dry sockets are worse than a severely decayed tooth. I didn't listen in my teens. Thought drinking through a straw would bypass the no liquid rule. Boy, did I learn a lesson the hard way.
My old dentist was ripping me off so bad for 3 years . The staff were inconsiderate, rude and just rough while working in your mouth . During the pandemic one hygienist had no face mask and was constantly coughing . I finally gave in and wrote a review stating my experience . Now I am happy with my new dentist .The staff are friendly, very knowledgeable and extra clean oh and affordable 😊
This helped so much, I had an experience when I was in my late teens, my current dentist wouldn’t listen to my concerns. So I told my parents and I switched to a great provider, thank you Whitney for this video!
My dentist when I was a child didn't wear gloves or a mask. Literally hated going to the dentist. A year or so ago I found a great dentist and it's made my life so much better. Got me a waterpik and a sonic toothbrush. My mouth hasn't been this healthy in years! Love your videos 📹
@foodie823...My dentist when I was a teenager in 1960s didn't wear gloves and he would put his fingers in my mouth smelling of tobacco smoke. Once I said something to him about that and I'm sure he didn't like that. He didn't have a dental hygienist so can't say I ever got my teeth cleaned. He did extract teeth that probably didn't need to be taken out. He had a receptionist and every time phone rang he went to see who was calling. I remember telling my mom something is not right with this dentist and she said he only charges $10.00 a tooth. Friend at work stopped going to same dentist she said he's crazy. So I wasn't only one that thought something not right.
My last dentist didn't chart my gums, and cancelled my cleaning twice in a row because "the dental hygienist had a family emergency". No problem, right? Not when they were over booked and had to push your cleaning out 6 months both times! When I was able to switch insurance that was excepted more places, I RAN! To a new dentist. I made my appointment, which they apologized had to be scheduled "next week", as they were booked the current week. Then called two days later asking if I'd like to come in as some one had cancelled 🙂. It's so nice to have a great dental care team again!!
I can tell you for a fact due to working at a dental office with this very problem that this is legitimate when they say there are family emergencies. It is unacceptable to be rescheduled 6 months out regardless of that fact. Our office has this problem due to a shortage of hygienists everywhere, and hardly anyone is going to school for it these days. We just put people on a cancellation list, and IF THEY’RE FLEXIBlE, we have them in within the next week or so.
I'm so blessed to have my current dentist/team. In my former city, I didn't have dental insurance so I went to the free/discounted clinics for low-income individuals. They did more damage to my teeth. One dentist started a root canal and never finished it. I had this huge white mold of whatever they used embeded in my teeth for years until another dentist finally properly removed it and scheduled me to have a real root canal. The bad dentists in my former city also used to start working on me and then stop throughout the process to work on other people. I don't recall them having dental hygienists. Since I've moved, my last 2 and current dentist have been absolutely wonderful. They have real hygienists, take the proper time to work on my mouth and explain what's going on. They go above and beyond to help me understand and maintain healthy teeth AND gums. They are also caring, friendly and gentle.
Retired and moved over a 100 miles away. Have to have nitrous for cleaning. Finding dentist here in Austin who doesn't charge for this, not happening. So I drive back to my dentist 2x a year. Worth it. He's amazing.
My new dental place is all green flags, yay!! I love my new place. Everyone is so nice and thorough and extremely helpful. Hygienist and dentist both talked to me and discussed my gums and teeth to me and went over my X-rays. I felt so safe there and helped. I hope everyone finds a place like that
I was a dental receptionist for a dental office where they didn't bag the instruments. He would also go into his office and go through his mail while the patient was getting numb, but still had the gloves on and then did the procedure with the same gloves he went through his mail with. Even though I worked for him, I went to my old dentist for care, even though I could get it for free with the dentist I worked for. He was a great boss but a terrible dentist. He also did all the cleanings himself, no hygienist.
Tooth cleaning causes damage, so they will sell repair work for damage they cause, I had the best insurance even to pay copay and they hit the insurance for the maximum every time and still made me pay 400 cash after my insurance paid the copay, all medical services are criminals
I quit dental hygiene after 30+ yrs when the YOUNG dentist I started working for, when I said the patients were loaded w calculus ( bc the last hyg didn’t do her job ) told me to “do the best I can in the time allotted ..it’s better than when they came in.” 🙀😵💫😵💫😩. These people have no idea their mouths are a mess….not perio but burnished sub calc. They had never had a thorough cleaning and thought I was too rough. There are good offices out there but they are hard to find these days.
I have dental anxiety causing me to push off appointments up until recently due to not going for the first 18 years of my life. So I like when my dentist talks me through what they are doing or just tell me the plan with the work they are doing so I can relax and trust they are doing their job.
Inwent at 14 and itvwas too late for 1 front ones. I got erosion after so bad even my nose fell in a bit and went to one side. Tupmof nose lost cartilege. Rhat side of fqce is much more wrinkled. Parents GEt your kids cavities fixed!! Pleeeez.
I had to get a new dentist as mine retired. I ran into nothing but losers. My first call was for a retreat of a 20 year root canal. The first thing they asked me was, how clean are your teeth? Pushing the $5k deep clean fraud and when i refused...no visit. I reported them and my insurance basically said they don’t care.
I have 3 professional tooth cleanings a year and I always have to free up my morning, because my dental hygienist takes almost a full *hour* to do the full cleaning and checkup. And it is genuinely a decent price for a professional tooth cleaning in my country. Also, my dentist is an amazing care provider overall. I had neglected my teeth due to severe depression and when I finally pushed past my anxiety, I had some major calculus buildup and two collapsed teeth that needed root canals. My dentist was so understanding and friendly and I'm glad I found her because I've never felt this well taken care of before.
Thank you for sharing this because I went to a dental office somewhere in the Wake Forest North Carolina area. I only paid for twice a year cleaning because I didn’t have insurance at the time. I went in for my routine cleaning, and the hygienist spent less than 15 minutes in my mouth, skipping back-and-forth through my mouth with out fully cleaning it and proceeded to say “oh your teeth is perfectly clean, we didn’t have to do much at all today.“ needless to say it left a bad taste in my mouth, and I never went back, which is a pity because the dentist was great and the other hygienist that I had in the past were all great, but I did not want to have that particular hygienist ever again working in my mouth. So thanks again for sharing. I thought maybe it was just me, but now I know better.
I had a 5 min cavity filling (+2 min for anesthesia and 15 min waiting in waiting room till he took other patient in) in Turkey at state dentist and when I asked questions about it, why he used silver filling without my consent or at least informing me, why he’s not filing and polishing to match a tooth shape and reconstruct my bite he was offended and rude. He basically filled my cavity like filling a hole on a street and half of it came off right away while the rest caused permanent tooth staining. Filing a complaint did not help as I was questioned like the guilty one and I it concluded with an answer that in order to ‘help’ as many patients the dentist has a limited time of 15 min/patient and if my filling came off to go back and have it redone there. 🙅🏻♀️
Had a chat with my present dentist (son of my previous dentist & in same office) about previous safety standards in dentistry. When I was a little girl until AIDS dentists didn’t wear masks or gloves! We both said “yuck”. And how they saw inside & what was really going on in our mouths without the magnifying glasses. He went through dental school without them & said doing it that way & still doing good work makes him really appreciate them. And I don’t think we ever had our teeth cleaned until hygienists came onto the scene. Dentistry has sure changed in my short life (66yrs).
I love that my dentists office is all GREEN FLAGS! My sister just went through a terrible experience with her office that they had to fire the hygienist for not reporting periodontal disease for hundreds or patients
I would also add 2 things, imo: 1 - High staff turnover! Bad, bad sign. I worked for a corporate (*coughnotherbadsigncough*) office that before I left, had over 15 people quit in 1.5 yrs (so THE WHOLE OFFICE... OVER 2 TIMES) and at least another 3 that left within a month of my leaving. That office is now closed so yeahhh 2 - They don't "show and tell". They just tell you "you need X, Y, Z done" but don't show you the cavities etc on the xrays or even worse don't show you the xrays, period. I remember a kid we had that came in for a second opinion, after being told they needed $15,000+/- work - multiple RCTs, EXTs, fillings etc. I took the FMX and yeahhh, nah. Might've been 1 or 2 small interproximals but the pt was basically told their teeth were bombed out and they about needed dentures. Was a well known BIG dental office that heavily advertises, so is well known but wow. That was a god 5 years ago and it still makes me sick >:\
Show and tell means nothing. They could point to a brown spot on an intraoral photo, or a spot on an xray, and it doesn't mean anything. Unless you have some knowledge of dentistry, you don't know if that brown spot is a stain or a cavity. You have no way to know or not know if the dentist is gaslighting you. I recently had to find a new dentist, because my previous dentist retired. The new dentist did the whole show of taking an intraoral photo and saying "this brown spot is a cavity, you need to get it filled." So, I started asking him if it's urgent, or if there's chance it'll re-mineralize. He started stammering and stumbling, and didn't directly answer my question. Needless to say, I think he's a crook, trying to drill into a perfectly healthy tooth to make a buck.
I agree about the dentist should show you where the problems are in your mouth by having you looking into a mirror and showing your problems on the X-rays and explaining what choices you have .
@@TheDenizxo Hey Deniz, thanks for asking! I did not get a second opinion. I don't want to spend $100+ on yet another dentist, to verify if this drug addict is lying or not. Yes, really. After my exam, I looked up this guy on my state's dental board website, and I found out that his license had been suspended twice in recent years because the cops found him in possession of illegal drugs on multiple occasions. His dental license was only full re-instated a few days before my exam. Yikes! I went to this dentist only because my mom's friend recommended him, and this friend wasn't aware of all this. Anyway, the "cavity" is on the chewing surface of the molar, which has brown stains anyway. On the intraoral photo, he pointed to one brown stain that looked exactly like all the other brown stains, and said it's a cavity. And that he recommended filling it "by the end of the year." What's so significant about the end of the year? Hm, perhaps to bill as much as possible to this year's insurance allowance?
My old dentist NEVER gave me a perio charting! I went to them for 6-7 years. I finally switched dentists and they immediately noticed gum disease/bone loss with 7-8mm pockets near the back of my teeth on the first visit! I am so upset I didn’t know this sooner!!!!
I’m a Dental Hygienist practicing for 16 years! I agree with you on everything in this video! You go girl, tell the people “how the cow are the cabbage!”
I’m a hygienist with over 30 years experience I’m on board with her recommendations as well. It’s ok to question X-rays. Watch out for dental offices that pay hygienists on production. In my experience that has not been a good thing for the patient. And don’t lie and say you are brushing at night before bed, we wouldn’t ask if we knew you were.
My first dentist had almost all of those red flags. My parents never took me to the dentist as a kid so I had no idea that it wasn't normal for the dentist to do the cleanings and I didn't know what perio charting was until I started watching your videos. I switched to a new dentist for my next checkup. I'll be changing again because while the dentist and hygienist at the new clinic was great, the billing department is terrible and overcharged me and my husband and refuse to give us our money back. They also charge $40 for an oral cancer screening when it should be included in the exam. They said it's an "advanced" screening that uses some sort of device to check for cancer. I declined thinking they'd still do the manual check where they move your tongue around and whatnot but they didn't do it. Apparently it's pay $40 or get no cancer screening. It sucks because I do like the dentist but I hate being ripped off.
@@kelseyjackson4908 how long and how intensive is the process of 5 minutes in your mouth to check for cancer..disgusting that it's not always mandatory and included in checkup
The oral cancer screening for 40 dollars is a scam. A hygienist checks the mouth as part of the hygiene appt. Unless there is something unusual, or suspect which is more likely with a smoker, that device is not necessary.
100% agree I'm 24 and started going to a dentist I found on google with really good ratings. After my first visit they asked for me to give them I review (I didn't) got 3 crowns put on 3 roots canals I had got done. This was 1 year ago. My crowns are lifted causing me to have really bad breathe since food gets stuck in them. Went to a new dentist this year because I felt like my old dentist was gaslighting me and lying to me. Come to find out one of my teeth needs a root canal re treatment and the crowns that were put on are not in good shape for them to be a year old. Also lost one tooth before visiting this new dentist and I feel like that tooth had to be re treated also. I was always having issues with it and she would always try to say I wasn't flossing right and that's why it felt uncomfortable. Please get a second opinion and trust your gut.
This hurts you are only 24. I am 25 and lost a good side tooth to a dentist who lied to me about my tooth and had attitude. I went there for a filling on a small cavity and she instead told me my tooth can't be saved ..wow to think it was my first time at a dentist. I regret it a lot
I visited a dentist yesterday after basically never visiting one and not taking care of my teeth for nearly 15 years (I am 22 as of writing this). Reason I not start to care about my teeth is constant pain I have for 2 weeks now. In a summary, my now new dentist seems very competent based on the mentioned Red flags in this video. There is a lot he told me I have to go through in the near future (3 planned appointments for now) but everything was explained and I had time to ask. First they did they did an x-ray and after that the dentist came in and explained what he already saw on the xray (my wisdom teeth are all in a risk position and should be taken out before it becomes a bigger problem, as well as one broken tooth next to a wisdom teeth that is practically beyond repair and should also be taken out). Speaking about the one permanent tooth that needs to be taken out, he said I don't necessarily need a replacement like an implant due to it not having any effect on chewing anyway but if I want I can get one in a year or two as the overall condition of my entire teeth has a priority right now (I have cavities basically everywhere). He also manually looked at my teeth as well in case there was something maybe not visible on the xray and after that we spoke about my insurance situation, questions I still had, etc. Then I got my appointments of which the first one is a deep cleaning which is majorly covered by my insurence, after that the tooth extraction and then the cavity therapy. Overall this dentist seems competent and honest from my perspective but I keep my eyes open. For now I am at least thankful they take care of me because it was hard enough to find anyone here (Germany).
Last one happened to me. I thought I was getting a cavity filled. only for him to tell me after it was over, it was a root canal. I was thinking.. shouldnt he have said this before he started?
My Hygenist did a scan. She showed me how my teeth come together, where my recession is, why the recession is there, where my teeth come together, wearing patterns and looked for cavities in between my teeth with the scan. Doctors have shown me X-rays and photos before but the scan my Hygenist did was so much more educational. I got into a night time guard and my headaches are much better. I will need to move my teeth to put them back there they before so the come together in a healthier way. That scan was everything. I floss and brush every day but didn’t know what grinding could do to my teeth. I loved it.
I didn't even realize I was grinding in my sleep. My jaw had been clicking and it was so long term, I thought it was normal. When I switched dentists, my new dentist asked me if I grind my teeth. At first I told her no, then she pointed out that I may have been unknowingly been doing it as I slept. She put me in a night guard and over time the clicking jaw stopped!!
@@stpaulimdogFor me, I think it was a comfort thing. I was soused to my teeth resting on each other that it became a habit. Now I try to catch and correct myself during the day if I notice them touching and rest my lips together as opposed to my teeth. I've never had any issues sleeping.
My former dentist had students taking molds of my teeth. It would take them forever. I didn't get a discount either. I was once left in a reclined chair where the head was lower than my body. I had to crawl out of the chair on my own. My neck went out and I couldn't hear very well. I was too embarrassed to pursue it.
I've used online coupons (Groupon, etc) to get routine exams/xrays/cleanings. The most recent one I saw did things differently from other dentists I've used. 1st, they did my tooth x rays while I was standing in a room separate from the exam room, rather than the x-rays where you stay in the chair, bite down, and get photos taken with the thing right next to your face. 2nd, they didn't do any tooth polishing after the cleaning. My appointment was under 30 minutes. Lest I sound paranoid, they didn't seem ready to go when I arrived (one of the cleaners wasn't hooked up and the dentist had trouble doing it), the toothpaste sample they gave me was expired over a year ago, and they offered $10 Amazon gift cards if you left a Google review. Now I know why they had hundreds of positive reviews! D'oh!
Hi, I really enjoyed watching your video. I am a dentist who has always practiced at a very high level of awareness of dental and periodontal disease, and have focused on this sort of treatment before my patients would receive restorative care. Periodontal maintenance, to me, has been very important. I want to give you a reason why we are having such a hard time finding hygienists in some offices. Part of the reason is because during this last shut down of businesses, between 2020 and now, many hygienists have fallen out of the profession, and/or have retired, and have not been replaced. As a matter of fact, the dental schools and hygiene schools often would not allow students to practice on people. The skill level of new graduates, therefore, is quite low. There will be a learning curve, but they often do not have the experience necessary to jump into a normal full-time practice. The other reason was that, based on what I heard and saw, with some of my Hygienist friends, there were scary articles in the hygiene publications, which caused Hygienist to be afraid to go back to work. This has been very hard for dental offices, and has, in some cases, where there were three or four hygienists to begin with, caused DENTISTS to take up the slack and fill in for their hygienists who are not there anymore. It is very detrimental to Those offices where restorative dentistry is necessary. It is essential to keep up the periodontal maintenance, but then restorative dentistry falls behind. It would be really nice for you to put up a video that extols the virtues of working in a very clean environment, and that might discuss some of the other things that Hygienist can do other than cleaning teeth, Such as creating an advanced perio maintenance program, using oral DNA labs, using a Perio scope, or Emdogaine treatments for bone regrowth, etc.
Go to dentist: 4 crowns, another dentist only 1 , crown got “installed” , 6 months later fell off 🤦♂️ , tooth without crown no problem, no pain 🤷♂️ , estimated for 6 implants, 3 each side $18,000 😳 do you think mechanics are scammers ? 😂 I know a lady she spent $23,000 on implants and still have some problems, fixing and adjustments that she have to pay 🙄
I had a gut feeling about the dentist I went to earlier in the year. I ended up ghosting them (I know, I know). But I'm glad I didn't go back to them and instead found the dentist I went to most recently. She actually explained why things needed to be done so I didn't feel like I was being scammed or pressured.
I just started seeing a new dentist and knowing they have all of these makes me feel more comfortable! The dental cleaning was a middle clean (I get a deep clean next time I go back after treating my mild gingivitis) and even that took about 20/25 minutes. Can’t wait to get my Invisalign!
Just because your insurance covers more x rays doesn't mean you need it. Bite wings are once a year and full mouth xrays are usually every 5 years. Obviously if there are problems, more x rays would be required.
You should still get xrays done every now and then so dentists can see small cavities and some areas of bone loss they cannot see with their naked eye. Getting severe decay and bone loss is a lot worse than the occasional xray exposure. Of course I wouldn't overdo it and would opt for digital rather than film. But if your dentist is having you take full bitewings every 3-6 months then that's a red flag.
My husband went to a dentist a few times before we got married (and on my insurance) the first visit after he had insurance, they gave him an extensive quote of the work he needed. He went to a new dentist, who pitched a much less extensive plan. He does have gum disease and needed the extra cleanings, but the initial dentist went way beyond that.
I once had a dentist who was part time farmer and part time dentist. He and his wife ran the whole office. Dentist did all the cleanings, visit lasted an hour and he had a little 8 inch tv for entertainment of the patient. The wife typed the invoices on a typewriter! This wasn't that long ago either. Maybe 20 years. He used to have me hold stuff too, like the container for the teeth polish he was using to polish the teeth.
Red flags according to my experience: 1. A dentist that behaves overly friendly and flattering, but turns stone-cold as soon as you question the necessity of a procedure. 2. Appointments that are always given very soon (a sign they don't have too many patients to tend to). 3. After requesting time to think about whether you will undergo a certain procedure at all they will nevertheless send you an - suspiciously high - estimate of cost (unasked for at that point) days later and emails soon afterwards to ask you to make an appointment soon. 4. Before you even sit down in that chair to have a certain procedure performed they tell you that you should soon make an appointment for another procedure, because "that other tooth there in your upper jaw also looks problematic". 5. Three dental assistants "working" on your mouth at the same time, exchanging weekend anecdotes while they have parked the suction device in the same place in your mouth for half an hour where it has sucked in a saliva glad which then remains damaged and swollen for a whole week. 6. More often than not you are the only patient in the waiting room. 7. Paper cards in the waiting room that advertise numerous kinds of strange treatments that you have never heard of that are "exclusively" offered in that doctor's office. 8. They don't stop praising their own skills and outcomes of procedures, while you perceive them to be average at best or even experience problems during the procedure (numbing an entirely different tooth, certain instruments are missing, so that the procedure needs to be interrupted, flossing becomes impossible after a procedure because of residues of the new filling blocking spaces between your teeth, sore/ infected areas in your mouth after treatment that shouldn't result from said procedure, toothache after treatment even months afterwards). 9. Finding out your insurance only covers a ridiculously small amount of an astronomical bill, because it contains numerous unusual minor items that obviously would not have been required for that procedure. After confronting your dentist with the problem and your dissatisfaction they answer "You received impeccable service, so deal with it." Then they start insulting you and destroy forms that you meant to send to the subsidy department. 10. You feel the need to report your experience to the dental chambers. Oh, and google ratings don't mean a thing. Said dentist obviously has negative ratings removed regularly, so every search engine will always show you five stars. ^^
Thanks for this video. While there are a lot of fine dentists out there; however, it’s good to be reminded that there also not so great, and downright terrible dentists. With the dental regulations we have in place today, hopefully this is much less likely to happen. Back in the later 80s I had moved and was looking for a new dentist. I was recommend a particular dentist (by two different co-workers). I’m very diligent with my personal dental care and had not had a cavity in many years. When I went to this dentist, all of a sudden I was having numerous (what he called) 2nd and 3rd level cavities. He even showed me x-rays, which I now know were not mine. My last appointment with him was scheduled to fill another cavity, I called to say I was running 5 minutes late, and they told me I’d have to reschedule - I never did. A year later, I went to a different dentist, to get this long awaited filling done. Turned out, there was no cavity. He was deeply drilling out perfectly good teeth to pad his bank account. Those teeth he compromised. After years of regular stress, they cracked and broke off. My advise, if you have any reason to be skeptical, get a second opinion.
Taken to the dentist as a 10 yr old child. The dentist told my mother that I had 11 cavities. I was a total brat and refused to go back to get them filled. My mom kept telling me how I was going to get a toothache. Went to another dentist at age 18. He found no cavities. So what happened to the 11 cavities????? I'm so glad I was a brat. That first dentist's ruined my obedient siblings mouths while I never had one cavity in my entire life and I'm 68.
The reason that we have dental hygienist in the United States, is because the dentist went to the dental schools long ago, maybe 50 years ago or so, and asked the schools to come up with a curriculum that would be specifically designed for a professional person who would concentrate on cleaning teeth, and maintaining periodontal situation‘s. Some countries have followed that lead, but not most.
Even if the Dental care system is a bit different in my country, this was super helpful for me! I've felt something's been off with my current dentist ever since my first few appointments. He's always in a rush to finish cleaning, no explanation or any gum condition updates or information. Nada. I even brought it up asking if there's something I need to worry about regarding the gums in my lower mouth because they're tender and sometimes painful, my dentist literally brushes it off (no pun intended) as a potential side-effect from 15 years of bulimia, and not gum disease/infection. I worry my teeth will actually fall out eventually as the gums have retreated back, all the way down to the nerves. Thank you for making this video!!
Masks don't work. They are very damaging to the person wearing them. They cause brain damage as we can clearly tell by the after effects in people after the order was lifted. I'd much rather have someone with their full faculties hovering over me, than a brain dead order follower.
I’m a dental repair technician that runs my own business and I go into 3/6 dental office every day for the past 30 years. I’ve worked for all of the big dealers, Patterson, Benco, etc. I know a thing or two about the dental office and she is correct! I like her she gives good advice. Sterilization is everything. I work on everything from autoclaces to chairs to stools, vacuums, and Compressors. Digital radiography, panoramic machines, etc.. The biggest thing is turnover and sterilization. She brings up a lot of really good points! I can tell within five minutes from walking into an office if they’re good or not. But then again, I’ve been doing this for a long time :-) she brings up a lot of really good points!
Thank you for this video; so helpful! It confirms that my dentist's office is absolutely top shelf. They exceed all of the target points you mentioned. My dentist checks all the work and gives me a thorough explanation. The hygienist also informs all the way through and any observations she makes. They give advice and do compliment my efforts, too.
Thank you for this necessary reminder. I moved to a different state last year and was new to the Dental practice the hygienist performed a teeth cleaning however there was no perio charting done. I was confused but didn’t say anything. It seems to me that it should have been done especially because I’m a new patient. They did everything else. Just not the perio charting. Anytime I’ve ever had my teeth cleaned this was always done.
For years I went to a great old-fashioned dentist who did all the work himself. He felt having a dental hygienist was just an extra cost he did not need. He did all basic dentistry and referred you for root canal or wisdom teeth extractions to a dental surgeon. Also, braces. Then you went to an orthodontist. He took care of myself, my husband and my children and, because he took over his fathers' practice, his father also took care of my husband when he was a child and the rest of his family, too. I miss those days.
I’d like to add not referring a patient for emergency care when they’re coming in pain (I had cracked a filling in quarantine, they referred me to dental schools!)😮I’m still on the hunt for a dentist with some standards!! It was so horrible the entire office closed and the dentist just vanished
The last hygienist that I had with my last dentist bitched about my teeth, and flossed my teeth so roughly that I was afraid she'd pull out a tooth. Bloody and sore gums afterwards, unlike I've ever seen doing it myself. By the way, my last dentist was my dad, but I never told him about her. My dad's been retired and I've been anxious about seeing another dentist ever since. My dad was always good with what he did. I'm going to find a new dentist soon, and I'm going to insist on leaving the flossing up to me... point being, there are lousy hygienists out there as well, not just dentists.
My younger sister hates the dentist more than I do cuz the dentist she had would fill stuff or something that didn’t need to be filled, pretty much unnecessary stuff
Can I add one. I had one office that would look up my insurance maximums for that year and then recommend treatments that would bump up agains those maximums. It was like they were trying to squeeze every little bit out of my insurance. I felt very uncomfortable. I also felt they were doing procedures that were not necessary.
How do u address it when the hygienist or dentist puts on gloves and u think they are coming DIRECTLY right to your mouth and INSTEAD they open the drawer or adjust the light ( all with gloves on) and THEN come over to perform your cleanings/exam (AFTER touching the drawer, light etc?). Shouldn't they come DIRECTLY to your mouth when they are ACTUALLY READY with NEW gloves on and NOT with the gloves STILL on that they put on to open a drawer etc beforehand? I notice it a lot when they are taking X rays. They put on gloves, position the xray machine, go out the room ( I believe while opening the door knob to get out), flip a switch to take the ray, come back in ( touching door knob again), reposition xray machine (same gloves), go back out, flip switch etc.. rinse and repeat. Although they are NOT actually going inside ur mouth like w/ a cleaning, they ARE adjusting the machine and do touch your mouth inside at times whilst doing so. I have gotten a number of cold sores over the years. Now, I don't experience this. I have a post care routine after dental visits. I go to restroom, brush again my mouth and lips, mouthwash both mouth and lips, ingest a vitamin E AND slather a capsule of one both in mouth and around lips and NOW No cold sores. What do u think of this post care routine? and how do I address the practitioners? And what is the best toothpaste? Thanks in advance to ALL replies.
What I can't stand: 30 minutes with the hygienist for a cleaning, 2 minutes with the dentist for a quick eyeball and nothing more. I pay for the dentist's expertise as well as for the cleaning!
I’ve been driving 180 miles 4 times a year from Maine to Lexington Mass to go to my hygienist for 24 years and when she went to work at another dentist I followed her there along with about 30 other patients ! Goooooooo Janet ! 😂😂😂😂
As a dental hygienist myself, I've worked for a few doozies and because of those red flags I did not want to work for dentists who were misleading the patients. Even in job interviews if they expected their hygienists to be finished in 30 minutes, I would see that as not viable to do the necessary work required. I feel it's gotten worse and it's hard to find a good dentist. Treat the patient, not the wallet.
My guess is you'll find time limits on procedures wherever you go to Private Equity owned dental offices...you know those infamous chain dental offices mentioned in repeated TV commercials. Aspen Dental, for one, but there are others. Mom, pop owned, operated dental offices are still the most trusted. But also don't have any insurance demanding I have to go where THEY want me to.
@@andreah6379 That is exactly the truth. If you have to chase patients to get to your office, then something is wrong. Do the right things and be honest, and they'll always come back.
When UA-cam suggested your video I had to watch and was nervous as I was afraid of seeing the red flags and thankfully my dentist didn’t have any. My dentist did my pockets when I was new and my cleanings take around 30 minutes and are very thorough. The dentist always stops in after the cleaning to discuss any areas that I can improve on and shocked me completely by actually sending me a check for a fluoride treatment that I paid for and they discovered it was covered by my insurance. I love my dentist and the same hygienist all the time. Something you should add as a red flag is upselling procedures that often occurs in big corporation type offices and even in smaller ones. I went to one after my dentist of 20 years decided to retire and went in on a X-ray and exam special new patient deal and right away my 6 tooth bridge had decay and needed changing to the tune of 11,000 😢 when I went to my present dentist she told me it was very minor decay and could be dealt with by stepping up my at home care which I did and reversed the decay 100% Unfortunately some dentists want the big payoff right away and have no desire to build a long term relationship.
I recently moved to a small town. On my first visit with my new dentist, there was a TV facing me with rolling videos for Botox and other cosmetic procedures that his office also did, to my surprise. He quoted me about $8000 for a tooth extraction and dental implant, and related maintenance services, I.e., cleaning, x-rays, etc. I was shocked and also, so taken aback by the commercials that I said I needed a second opinion. I returned to my previous dentist, 85 miles away, and an oral surgeon in that area, also. The second opinions were that I indeed needed all this work, and proceeded with them. The work was done very satisfactorily for about $5000; just good dental work, no nonsense.
So I definitely ended up at a dentistry with all of these red flags, I got to spend 5 minutes with the dentist , I was billed twice for this appointment once with the dentist I saw and once with a dentist I never went to see. My insurance confirmed the double billing but the dentistry refused to acknowledge it $240 for 5 minutes what a rip off At the time I had absolutely horrific cavities I asked what can I do right now to help with this they said don't worry about it. Gave me the referral to get a wisdom tooth extracted and ended up getting two wisdom teeth extracted and then had my second molar broken during set extraction on the lower right hand side of my jaw. The oral surgeon who did the extraction kind of just shrugged his shoulders and said my tooth was like mush and I should go get it filled ASAP. When I contacted the original dentistry who made this referral, to see if I could get an appointment to save my second molar get it filled they said no go elsewhere. I realize now what I went to was a Mcdentistry, From here the story actually does turn out pretty well having that toothbroken prompted me to finally take care of my oral health I had not seen a dentist ever in my life for so much as a cleaning long story there. When I went to get this tooth filled they didn't bill me for an emergency fee, they managed to save my second molar by getting a second opinion from a very experienced dentist they had staffed. She it upon herself to do the filling personally for me, and worked a dental miracle. This same dentistry gave me $1,500 in free deep cleanings, this free service allowed me to pay the $2,000 in cavity fillings I needed. So just one more wisdom tooth to go we're going to a different oral surgeon for that and I'll be doing routine teeth cleanings every 4 months to keep my gum disease under control for the foreseeable future. 2022 has been an expensive year and all of this has happened since May.
Great content! I once went to a dentist who refused wearing gloves. And his fingers actually smelled sulphoric, like of mouth bacteria even though he had, to be fair, washed his hands. I was too young to protest or walk away, but I never went there again!
I went to a dental office pretty far from where I live, everyone is nice but the office is just a little bit run down, the vinyl coverings of the chairs are cracked, but they have some of the newest technology, like they can 3-D print crowns so you don't have to wait, and they do almost everything in-house. I tried out another place closer to where I live, they have a big advertising campaign, lots of billboards and ads, free whitening, massaging chairs, fancy office, flatscreen tvs on the ceiling... but they didn't do a perio chart and the dentist barely spoke to me, and I'd need to go to a whole different office to get my wisdom teeth removed. I went back to the first office. I don't mind the distance if I get better care.
I have a dentist that has 2 hygienist. Both of them are very quick. Like 10 minutes and they NEVER scrape or say anything about pockets. I just told my husband I am going to switch to my nieces' Dentist who does it himself and is very thorough.
I have actually found that brushing with my homemade tooth powder IS recalsifying my teeth! I had a cavity they were “watching” for years and now …. It’s smaller than ever and the enamel is coming back! I’m so glad I found out about natural inexpensive ways to take of my teeth!
I asked my dentist why he does not employ an hygienist and he said "you do not saw off the branch you are sitting on" meaning that if people´s teeth health is very good he wont have any work. Why dont you produce a full video of what is going on in the mouth, Caries, Gingivitis, Periodontitis, etc. After watching hours of youtube videos I have learned so much about my teeth and how extremely important hygiene is. Therefore I now visit a dental hygenist every 30th day for a cleaning and to be sure that nothing negative is going on. You have good teeth, I am sure you do a cleaning twice a month!! Lastly I have never heard the term perio charting until today, it makes a lot of sense. Thank you for this.
I had 3 dentist that I loved going too but then someone new takes over and everything changes my last one passed away but when the new person took over and I went in there because my crowns came off his customer service was not nice and found out that everyone who worked there left only one person stayed but I decided what he wanted to do to my teeth I felt what I said he didn’t care I also heard that the lady that does the cleaning a friend told me she did a terrible job. I now have to find a new dentist it’s so hard to find a good dentist that care and listen to you and works with you about ur teeth
I just got back from a new dentist for a filling. It was the best filling appointment I ever had. I had been there many years ago and now came back to them. It was a very fast filling!!!!!! less than 25 minutes. It was great. But I hope I don’t get anymore cavities. Still very stressful.
Red flags to run, not walk: 1 Corporate dental company 2 Revolving door with new dentists and hygienists 3 Refuses to clean teeth without x-rays 4 Dentist lying saying that ADA REQUIRES him to do full X-rays every two years or will lose his license. From the ADA - ”However, the dentist must weigh the benefits of taking dental radiographs against the risk of exposing a patient to x-rays, the effects of which accumulate from multiple sources over time. The dentist, knowing the patient’s health history and vulnerability to oral disease, is in the best position to make this judgment in the interest of each patient. For this reason, the guidelines are intended to serve as a resource for the practitioner and are not intended as standards of care, requirements or regulations.”
My OB ripped me off. I got an HPV vaccine and I'm pretty sure she said the price was for a complete set. When I went there for the second shot she asked for another payment saying the price she gave me was for per shot. Next time I go to any medical practitioner I will have to list down questions and make sure the prices are clear.
If the dentist has been doing the cleanings and has been saying "You have a little inflammation", he eventually gets a hygienist and she says "You have some bone loss", that will be a big regret.
So true! Even with insurance it can be pricey. I have to get a crown, cavity and two deep cleanings. I’m lucky my insurance is really good. My first deep cleaning before insurance was 1095. After insurance it was 75. Holy moly! And my crown and cavity will be 500. I will find out tomorrow how much it would have been without insurance. But it’s all going on my credit card cuz it’s still expensive (though not as much as I could have been without insurance). Wish these things didn’t cost an arm and leg. I bet more people would go in if they could afford it. I never judge anyone cuz I understand how hard it can be.

High staff turnover should also be a red flag. If there are new hygienists, assistants and front office every time you see your dentist that should be a red flag.
yesssss!!!!!!!
😮😮😮

Absolutely well said! With my 38 years of dentistry I can totally agree!
Biggest red flag in a dentist office. When they quote you a price for work needed to be done that equals out to a house down payment which also includes insurance.
Yup! Got told it was going to be 10k to get a tooth pulled and things that went along with it that I didn't want IE root canal and bridge.

I'm sorry but they usually are rude.
My dental hygienist niece warned me there is much poor to sloppy hygienist performance too. She said it did not used to be this way even ten years ago. It was simply not tolerated. Thank you for this! People must be extremely cautious WHERE they go to the dentist!
They don't give the hygienist enough time. The gold standard is an hour.

I go to a small dental practice, and my dentist is the one who cleans my teeth rather than the hygienist. I love that.
I prefer a hygenist to clean...I hate a dentist do it one time when they short on staff and he did a TERRIBLE job. He was nervous and my teeth did not feel clean like a usual cleaning
I love it also

I went to that kind of dentist. I liked it. He was really good.
OMG!!! 🫢

Your dentist doesn't force you to do bite wing xrays nor a panoramic xray?
That sounds like Dentists At Metrotown in Burnaby BC or they are doing the similar thing
It's great. I used to hate cleanings but now that I'm so busy, doing cleanings is like a nice break from my "actual job."
Additionally, we take a lot of x-rays at my practice.

I was in so much pain every day…
This extraction was the last hurdle and I’m so excited to finish my treatment plan. the surgery helped me tremendously because a dry socket sounds like complete hell so I abide by all the post op rules x1000 Blessed to say no more smoking cigarettes and no vaping!!!❤️
Hygienists should ALWAYS wear a mask regardless of Covid or not. You did really good to get away from that place. Definitely a red flag.

Why did u stay so long?!
This helped so much, I had an experience when I was in my late teens, my current dentist wouldn’t listen to my concerns. So I told my parents and I switched to a great provider, thank you Whitney for this video!
Same..some dentist will be so passive and scammy lazy when ur multiple times telling them ur in pain from thier work they passively Care for.
Ooh you ain't lyin!
Dental office just completely disappeared on me. Never gave a notice or warning of closure or moving. I got nothing.
Is there not some governing body in your state that you could report this too?
Some people are good at complaining but they refuse to report anything.
And you reported him, right? If you didn't, you are worse than he is.
Tooth cleaning causes damage, so they will sell repair work for damage they cause, I had the best insurance even to pay copay and they hit the insurance for the maximum every time and still made me pay 400 cash after my insurance paid the copay, all medical services are criminals
Yeah, would like an update on this, if you've reported him. He could be getting people sick.

I hear you about depression and lack of self care, including oral hygiene. Sounds like you're doing better. So am I!
You are correct. Back in the day dentists did not wear gloves or masks.
I love that my dentists office is all GREEN FLAGS! My sister just went through a terrible experience with her office that they had to fire the hygienist for not reporting periodontal disease for hundreds or patients
I would also add 2 things, imo:
1 - High staff turnover! That office is now closed so yeahhh
2 - They don't "show and tell".
@@hamsteramadid u get a second opinion on the tooth after ?
@@hamsteramaif it's grey/ black or void spot on the tooth that usually means cavity if it's in the gums that means bone loss.
Not only that, but offices that care more about high production will cause the staff to get stressed out. Thus, it could lead to a high turnover rate.
Oral cancer screening is an extra charge. Insurance typically doesn’t cover it.
Sounds a bit much.
Too much work needed.
Sorry to say, you probably don't need a deep cleaning. That is a huge money maker for the office.
I loved it.
If you wear a night guard, try to find out why they are grinding. It could be sleep apnea because it does that.
Glad he/she is your former dentist. I would be running as fast as possible to another dentist.

My dentist's assistant said that my insurance would cover some more xrays. I declined. I don't think x-rays are harmless.
Just because your insurance covers more x rays doesn't mean you need it. Bite wings are once a year and full mouth xrays are usually every 5 years. Obviously if there are problems, more x rays would be required.
@@katehepburn9544 What's the difference between full mouth and panoramic?
You should still get xrays done every now and then so dentists can see small cavities and some areas of bone loss they cannot see with their naked eye. Getting severe decay and bone loss is a lot worse than the occasional xray exposure. Of course I wouldn't overdo it and would opt for digital rather than film. But if your dentist is having you take full bitewings every 3-6 months then that's a red flag.
@@komfykoala6083 Digital xrays are a great invention! They are fast, easy and accurate.
Red flags according to my experience:
They may have been baby teeth that had fallen out.
That happened to me too.
My country doesn’t have dental hygienists 😅 And x-rays are rarely done. I guess my whole country is a 🚩 😂
Where you from?
What country! As a dental hygienist I'll volunteer to come!
@@CGA40 that’s so sweet! Bulgaria, but I think it’s the case across the Balkans
The role of dental hygienist was create in the US
Biggest red flag: Hearing the screams of the damned when you walk in.
That just happened a few min. Ago I'm at dentist office now ☹️☹️☹️☹️
@@augustaugust7667 How did it go?
😂🙏✌️
I know this ain't funny but 🤣
Even if the Dental care system is a bit different in my country, this was super helpful for me!
Hope you find a new one. Every patient deserves to be taken seriously!
This is good info, thank you. I had wisdom teeth removed with someone hovering over me for an hour with no mask. I was not pleased about this.
I live in Argentina and these six red flags coexist in almost all clinics :/
I live in Brazil. Same here.
Thank you for this necessary reminder. I moved to a different state last year and was new to the Dental practice the hygienist
performed a teeth cleaning however there was no perio charting done.
Hygienist make a lot of money for dentists. They are paid a fraction of the money collected.
I’d like to add not referring a patient for emergency care when they’re coming in pain (I had cracked a filling in quarantine, they referred me to dental schools!)😮I’m still on the hunt for a dentist with some standards!! It was so horrible the entire office closed and the dentist just vanished
mine vanished also was yours in fremont ca?
@@victoriafisher6934 lol nope she was in Detroit smh
The last hygienist that I had with my last dentist bitched about my teeth, and flossed my teeth so roughly that I was afraid she'd pull out a tooth. Bloody and sore gums afterwards, unlike I've ever seen doing it myself. By the way, my last dentist was my dad, but I never told him about her. My dad's been retired and I've been anxious about seeing another dentist ever since. My dad was always good with what he did. I'm going to find a new dentist soon, and I'm going to insist on leaving the flossing up to me... point being, there are lousy hygienists out there as well, not just dentists.
This is GOLD!!! Thank you so much! You truly show you care about people and that is highly appreciated!
My younger sister hates the dentist more than I do cuz the dentist she had would fill stuff or something that didn’t need to be filled, pretty much unnecessary stuff
I had that happen. One. I went in later and rold them. No $ back
I agree infection control number one red flag 🚩
drilling cavities with out any numbing was done to me as a kid, the pain was so bad
Can I add one. I had one office that would look up my insurance maximums for that year and then recommend treatments that would bump up agains those maximums. It was like they were trying to squeeze every little bit out of my insurance. I felt very uncomfortable. I also felt they were doing procedures that were not necessary.
"Always check yelp and google reviews before going to the dentist. Also ask your friends and coworkers for a good dentist. This helps a lot.
I tell them to change their gloves. You might get attitude from them but hey it’s your mouth and hep c and B lives a long time on surfaces.
I feel like another red flag is different staff everytime I go
A lot of them could be part time or an on call sort of thing my office is the same not every time I go but quite often there’s new ones
That is loyalty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 great.
4 times a year? Why not twice?
Thanks for this vlog. Never had a problem with my dentist or hygienist, especially when charting my teeth. And that's the best part of the exam.
I appreciate the tips! Found my new dentist about a month ago. Thank God she is none of these!
I went to one after my dentist of 20 years decided to retire and went in on a X-ray and exam special new patient deal and right away my 6 tooth bridge had decay and needed changing to the tune of 11,000 😢 when I went to my present dentist she told me it was very minor decay and could be dealt with by stepping up my at home care which I did and reversed the decay 100%
Unfortunately some dentists want the big payoff right away and have no desire to build a long term relationship.
My insurance confirmed the double billing but the dentistry refused to acknowledge it $240 for 5 minutes what a rip off
At the time I had absolutely horrific cavities I asked what can I do right now to help with this they said don't worry about it.
I realize now what I went to was a Mcdentistry,
From here the story actually does turn out pretty well having that toothbroken prompted me to finally take care of my oral health I had not seen a dentist ever in my life for so much as a cleaning long story there.
Every dentist I've ever had passed this, except one during my time in the military.
Beware that they clean your teeth so fast that they severely cut your gums or cut a little chunk off. That happened to me never going back
I went to a dental office pretty far from where I live, everyone is nice but the office is just a little bit run down, the vinyl coverings of the chairs are cracked, but they have some of the newest technology, like they can 3-D print crowns so you don't have to wait, and they do almost everything in-house.
Red flags to run, not walk:
1 Corporate dental company
2 Revolving door with new dentists and hygienists
3 Refuses to clean teeth without x-rays
4 Dentist lying saying that ADA REQUIRES him to do full X-rays every two years or will lose his license.
Thanks!
thank you for your support!
The big problem is, most people can’t afford a dentist.
