Great videos, thank you. Can the top thread tension be checked in the same way?

Thank you! The way it is done is to set up your bobbin tension then you just wind in or out the top tension to get the stitch correct. The bobbin tension should not need to be touched after it is set, just need to adjust top tension to match.

i have a jack A4s and my bobbin goes in the way you had it before ya turned it around, the thread comes off the spool anticlockwise

Richy, I believe JACK uses the same bobbin case for their straight stitch range of machines. If when you pull the thread with the bobbin facing you the bobbin is turning anti-clockwise then you have your bobbin in the wrong way.

So what if I have a top loading bobbin? Everyone shows the front loading case but not the top loading!

This tool is only to do removable bobbin cases. Its design is to test tensions on vintage domestic machines.

@@ozcommercialsewingmachines. Hello there from near Whitby….a la Captain Cook. I’m interested in this bobbin tension device because I’m trying to set the spring on my 15k bobbin case ( scientifically rather than trial and error ) to suit V69 thread for repairs to my dinghy sails. I think I’m right on the limit, or over , the limit of max thread diameter for these cases and springs . My top tension is at its maximum, and it’s not enough to get a good stitch, so I’m slackening off the bobbin spring as a consequence to the extent that the spring is insecure.
I was advised to ease off the spring “springiness” and this has improved the stitch, but not enough. Also the chief techie for a local company who suggested this , said the top tension could be tweaked higher …. but I once dismantled the top tensioner and it was very difficult to get it back together, so im reluctant to go there at the moment.
Any tips will be much appreciated. My machines are vintage straight/zig zag made in Japan, very heavy , beautiful internally, all steel. I’d like to use my Newhome 509 (Janome) machine because I’ve fallen in love with it !! I believe they are more than strong enough for what I want. Thanks.

@@californiadreamin8423, I got my bobbin tension meter from The Featherweight Shop in the USA. If you are in the UK you can get it from a guy named Philip Enstone but if in Canada, I'd suggest getting it from The Featherweight Shop.
